I feel like part of what makes it hard to draw what you love is the pressure of not failing (for me at least). If you draw something you don't feel attached to, it doesn't matter if it doesn't turn out the way you wanted it to, because the entire piece didn't matter. If you make the art you love and want to make, it somehow feels like there's more risk involved. Like if you don't make it exactly the way you envisioned it, you're not doing it justice.
This did get me thinking about my own art. I haven't really liked my art for over a year now. My focus was completely on making something that's popular, and not on making the things that I love to make or improving. In fact, even though I've been drawing more than I've ever been, I've improved the least. Not necessarily in skill, but because I used to make art I liked and that's something I'm unable to do now.

Oofff yea I totally hear you. I love Alice in Wonderland and I used to make very little artwork related to that because I would try and if it looks like it sucked, I would be super hard on myself and say things like "if this is the stuff you LOVE then it should be amazing so you're clearly a terrible artist!" But I realized that I make sure I never do it justice when I avoid it and I'm probably going to fail a lot in the beginning which is why I'm SO grateful I have a coach who I can go through my failures with so I'm not going through it alone. I'm so glad you're noticing that even though you're drawing more, you're not improving as much, which proves that working for works sake is not what creates the results we want in our art, we need to think at a higher level. It's awesome you caught that cause now you can really study your thought process and work on it if you want to make changes!

Awesome advice :) I would only add that as far as "social media strategy", people should also work on clear communication as part of the overall experience. I know Kim wasn't getting a ton of commissions for a long time until she really started consistently bringing it up in posts, moving past the fear of annoying people. Since then she's had a consistent flow of commissions and people are always excited to learn that she offers them! So along with being genuine, it might be important to move past some comfort zones by putting yourself out there, and making sure it's being communicated clearly. *This more has to do with making money than gaining followers, but still. And obviously being genuine and happy with your work has to come before any of this!

Yea that's a really great point! It's not that people don't want commissions from us, it's just that most people have no idea and just need to be reminded over and over again. Go Kim!!!

Glad you talked about the connection with your own art. 🙂 It's the explanation why I feel disappointed whenever someone I follow on social media starts asking their audience what they should do next for them... I'd never blame someone who tries to make a living off of their online presence for asking for input, but as a viewer I'm sometimes saddened by the development from passion project to business. I can only assume I'd fall into the same trap. It's good to become aware of it once in a while. 💙
Dear socials, I follow you for your ideas, not because you want to please me. 💛

I think UA-cam has helped me get over the numbers thing in part. Really because views and subs don't actually matter on youtube, it's the watch time. And my average watch time has stayed pretty consistent and that doesn't phase me at this point. I still get disheartened when something does worse compared to everything else though but i'm improving :)

Yea I'm learning that watch time is most important too. Yeah I totally get it, I get disheartened too but I just do my best to figure out what I can learn from it. You can do that too! But you can give yourself time to be disappointed, it's totally normal.

This one really got me thinking. I think I've fallen for the trap of wanting others to like me for what I do in the past, not realizing that maybe the right approach is wanting to put that emotion out there for others, whether the end result is them liking me (or my art) or not.

This is one of my favorite things I got from my coach, "the impact of what you put out in the world IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS." Our job is not to control the impact, it's to show up as self-sufficient as possible in our art and create the opportunity for connection/impact, but what other people do with it is none of our business.
