- How to use the service diagnostic mode of your washing machine to diagnose and fix a washer that won't agitate. The service manual for most modern washing machines can be found somewhere inside the cabinet usually inside a sealed plastic bag.
In Whirlpool-styled washers, Roper, Estate, Amana, etc., the technician’s service manual can usually be found on the upper left corner of the inner cabinet. On General Electric machines a large folded sheet with the service information can often be found taped at the bottom left back of the cabinet case. The information found in these pamphlets can be very useful to the service technician and the DIY’er when diagnosing any problems that may occur with these machines.
If you can’t find a service manual on your machine try doing a web search using your make and model number for this information.

My pen name is Cal Kasheau. Hey, I'd like to shamelessly promote my literary accomplishments while I have your attention. I have several short story titles you can get on Amazon; the links are below. Some are humorous, some reflect events in my life, and some are legends I heard of as a child in the swamps of Louisiana. They are only a dollar or two, and most are free with Kindle unlimited membership. I hope you will take the time to read one or two and give me your honest opinion in the comments on whether or not I should continue to pursue a side gig as an author.

Thanks for watching!
Thank you for showing me Exactly how to fix my washer.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Excellent video. I had to replace my shift actuator. Didn't know about the self diagnostic mode on the washer. Thank you for the help.
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
Lights light up after one click, no matter which direction. All except the lock lid light. They never stay off one counterclockwise circle.
Try holding down the start button until the lights go off. Up your a minute or more. If they don’t go off your control board may be bad. Thanks for watching!
Hi your video has helped me to solve my problem thank you
You are welcome. Thanks for watching!
The video was helpful
I’m glad you got some use from it. Thanks for watching!
You did a good job
Thank you!
Hi, your video was very helpful. We went through the diagnostics on our 3 year old Amana. We replaced the actuator and put it back in diagnostic mode and the agitator still does not move.
Could be the capacitor or the motor or the lid switch/lock. I can only guess without seeing it myself. Thanks for watching!
That was cool to see the machine start agitating as it should be near the end of the video!
Did you end up having to change the splutch, or were you able to clean the grime and grit out and re-use the original splutch?
No, that splutch was defective so I replaced it too.
I sure like the photo of you and Mr. Harper. Which do you prefer working on, direct drive or belt drive? Which one gives less problems as far as repair?
Cheers from S. CA
PS It would have been cool to have Amana in the background of the photo.
Direct drives are less problematic. Alas, Amana refuses to pose if others are in the picture.
Hi Chip love your videos. Could you please tell me what kind of spray paint you use to repaint your refurbished machines.? DD
Hey, I’m glad you enjoy them! Yeah, I use “Rust-Oleum Appliance Epoxy’’. Here’s a convenient link if you’d like to support the channel:
amzn.to/3HNXPta
This paint is an exact match to most white machines out there. I use about one can per machine. Be sure to sand down all the rusty spots, no primer needed. Good luck with your rebuilds and thanks for your kind comment!
Here's one for you. In both test and calibrate mode, my agitator works fine, spins seperate from the drum. In manual test mode all the lights flash when I try agitate and it won't work. On a regular cycle the washer goes through everything, except when it should be agitating it just sit there not even trying. New main panel, same thing
Your problem is probably either the shift actuator or the splutch. Thank for watching!
Mine will fill but no agitation or spin . It drains fine just no washing
What is the model number of your machine? Find it inside the lid.
I ran all the test and it worked in low agaitation an high agitation. When i put clothes in it to wash it dont work in high agitaion. On rinse cycle it makes a weird noise but it agitates. Can you help me out? Im lost at this point.
Unfortunately I can't diagnose your problem without being able to have access to the machine. I can't evening imagine what the problem is. Thanks for watching and I hope you find the solution.
Thanks buddy
@@HarperandKnowles I fixed it. Once I took everything apart and replaced the valve and got it tightened back up. This was pretty easy. I put it into test mode and everything worked as it should. What I didn't know was that my machine had to run a full wash, rinse, and spin cycle in order for it to operate on regular modes. Thanks again for the video buddy.
That’s awesome. Glad you got it fixed!
Our Amana would spin but not agitate. We replaced the shift actuator and the splutch. Now it will agitate and won't spin properly. Every time it starts to spin *BAM* it goes out of balance. Where did we go wrong??
Those two components shouldn't affect the balance. Check to see if your suspension rods need replacing. You can watch this video to determine that. ua-cam.com/video/xmBJdpUfV-Q/v-deo.html. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your quick response! In the last few minutes I saw a video with someone saying they had gotten the pulley nut too tight to where the teeth would not release. We will check both the suspension rods as well as the pulley nut. We could not have even gotten this far without your help!! Thank you so much!!
My pleasure!
... should have mentioned that in order to do the repairs, we laid the machine down on its back. I just found your video about never doing that but had no choice. Anyway the tub is off center and I cannot find anything about fixing that that doesn't involve suspension rods, which seem to be fine on ours. You can visually see the misaligned tub when you open the lid. At this point, I'm ready to get a wash board and ringer and call it done! 😂
If your machine has suspension rods laying it on its side won’t hurt it. That video was about machines that have the triangular plate on the suspension that can get misaligned and cause the tub to crack. If your rods are good and the tub is misaligned it is possible that you have bent the tub or transmission shaft. In that case it is best to replace the unit because the vibration from this damage will wear out the linear dampeners in a very short time.
Mine won’t agitate or spin would you think it’s the actuator?
That could be your problem but there are other reasons too. I couldn’t tell you for certain unless I could diagnose the problem myself! Thanks for watching!
@@HarperandKnowles I put it into diagnostic mode and got a F5 I’m guessing that means the lid switch is bad. Also getting an F8 think it’s not filling up fast enough but I’ll check to see if there are screens on the hoses. I’ve got low water pressure at my house. If you could give me what you think about the F5 I’d appreciate it thanks
After putting it into diagnostic check when I turned the knob one click counter clockwise I got the F5 reading and on that same setting I got the F8. They flashed one right after the other.
Those codes should be in pairs ... like F5 E3 would be for a defective lid lock.
@@HarperandKnowles when I put it into diagnostics the first code it lit up the number 4 and 1. The next one that lit was the 4,2 and 1 before I checked for any other codes but I do not see the F5 E8 I’ll double check the code
I double checked the codes and I was way wrong. It is F7 E5 indicating might be the shifting actuator. Glad I double checked myself. Think I’m understanding how to read these codes. If you get a chance can you offer your opinion and what else it might be. I’m stuck here over the weekend till they open Monday but thank you so much I wouldn’t of double checked myself if you didn’t tell me about the codes being in pairs. I might as well change the spluch while I’m under there. Thanks again
Mine do everything but agitate
What if you can spin the agitator freely by hand in an amana washer but it doesn't move with clothes in it?
Your agitator’s splines may be stripped out. If you are talking about just the top part you need new agitator cams, also called dogs. Thanks for watching!
I replaced my "dogs" they still looked good but I changed um anyway. So I figured the lower part of the agitator was bad. Tried to get the lower part of and it's being a "Bear" and won't move up and off. Any suggestions? Don't want to break anything else in the process. ???
Stuck agitators can bring a repair job to a sudden stop. They can be a real pain and sometimes can only be removed by destroying them. Here’s a video that I made about that ua-cam.com/video/nAf4k_n4YAs/v-deo.htmlsi=vxyZZM1LcKnkFqYT. You can try some of the methods I used here.
@@HarperandKnowles Thank you sir. I'll check it out and hopefully I can get it done. Your vids are great. A friend referred you to me on here. I'll be in touch. Have a blessed rest of your day and wknd. 😎👍🙏🙏
Thank your friend for me! Good luck with your repair.
My Amana washer is doing the same thing it will not agitate. I noticed on my unit that there was what appeared to be a oil or grease buildup on the 😮Drive Motor. The metal base was covered in it. could that have been the issue?
It sounds like your transmission seal has failed. That’s a terminal illness for these machines. Thanks for watching!
@@HarperandKnowles will a new Drive motor fix the problem?
I had no idea washing machines had transmissions
No, but a new gearbox would. But you’ll have to decide if the cost to repair it is economical. I’d get a new machine.
@@HarperandKnowles thank you
or the idiots that made these junkers could just make them like in the 70s or at least have a seperate test panel with clear labels
Lol, someone figured out they could sell more machines if they built them to break! Thanks for watching!
@@HarperandKnowles funny how the govment talks about carbon footprint and makes use buy $7 lightbulbs to save the planet, yet these companies are allowed to make pollution by making junk so they can make more sales
Can't hardly hear your voice!
Thanks for the critique, I’m getting better. I promise! Thanks for watching.
Can this be done cost-effectively on units in operation? 50% of a new matching seems to be the mathematics I keep hearing.
Sure, I change them in the field all the time. It’s much easier to do in the shop, but I love a challenge.
Oh, I also located one of those plugs for you if you still want it.
@@HarperandKnowles Absolutely. I really appreciate the help.
Let me know what payment system you would like to use. I do like Venmo because there are no fees attached. But completely your choice.
Send me your address in my email, I’ll get it to you.
