Mark. Thank you so much! Our plastic splines were fine but it is still not agitating enough to move the towels. Bucket is moving a couple of inches at a time but towels standing still. Could there be another issue? Wish it was just the splines
I have a washer just like this and have a water leak that is dripping down off the belt guard. I have been looking and don't see a seal. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Me too! I was going shopping this weekend! Even though I didn’t even have the money but my car note was going on the back burner but NOT NO MORE !! Weeeeeee
I just wanted to thank you so VERY much for this video! I hired a service guy to come see what my problem was with my Maytag washer and he advised me it was the Hub. He also informed me that when removing the wash plate that sometimes it breaks. He proceeded to tell me that he could not guarantee it would not break and therefore it would/could cost upwards of $300 to repair my 5 year old washer. My husband and I decided to purchase a new machine and paid the guy $75 for his visit. After watching your video last night, I decided to try removing the wash plate myself, following your instruction on tapping the screw (after loosening it) with a hammer. It working PERFECTLY!!! And I did not have to remove the front panel. I removed the hub and sure enough, it was totaling smoot, with no "teeth". I called Fox Appliance in August, GA and purchased the part for $26.00!! I replaced the hub (along with a new screw) and put everything back together and it works fantastic!! Thank you for saving me a pile of money!! May God Bless you!!
Mark, great job on this video. I just completed the repair. I did need an impact wrench to remove the bolt. Getting the wash pan out was extremely difficult. I ended up pouring boiling water on the bolt/shaft area like someone had recommended in the comments. I waited a while, but it still wouldn’t come off. Then I strung a shoelace under the pan and tried to remove it. Still wouldn’t go. Then I tried pulling up on both ends of the shoelace while using the hammer to tap down on the shaft. That made it pop off! The rest was not very hard. Without this video I couldn’t have done it. Thanks!
Ended up being my wash plate, but this video and all the comments really helped. I did not take the top of the washer out or pull the entire drum out to change the hub or wash plate. The trick to get the wash plate was very helpful. Thanks!
Process was easy to follow and fixed my problem. I modified the process a bit as I was able to get agitator plate out without pulling the top off. Hardest part was getting hub retaining clip off. Thanks for the instructions, part numbers and explanations. Great job!!
I cannot thank you enough for this video. I had the same issue-plus a stripped bolt I needed to replace-and you talked me through the process perfectly. Videos like this are why I love UA-cam.
Hi. Can you help? I took the wash plate off. To get to the Hub. I need to replace the hub. I took the 6 screws off the hub but o can’t get the old hub off. The spline shaft is too big. I see in your video there isn’t any spline that your hub is on. The hole in the middle of the old hub is too small.
Thanks for the video and the links. The washplate cost $31.35 and the hub was $11.88. I did not remove the wash basket. The hardest part of the job was removing the washplate. I wedged several putty knives under the edges while dropping a ball pean hammer on the bolt head. My hub was actually OK, but the washplate splines were completely gone. If the new one fails the same way, I'll drill sideways through it and the shaft and install a long bolt to lock them together.
This worked for me. On my machine, I didn't even need to take anything off but the insert. So I wasted time taking off the lid items. Drum didn't need to come out either. So if you are attempting, try taking out the base first to see if you need to do anything else. Also, the shoestring method is a MUST. Only way my base came off. Worked great. Thanks!
Wonderful video and helped me with my own Maytag bravos repair. Tips- I attempted the repair without removing the wash basket at first... but yeah in the end it was better to remove it and attach the new part to the basket without trying to fight the splines on the shaft. I couldn't get it to seat properly until the basket was removed from the washer. This guy had the right method and it's only a couple more steps to do it this way. Also... I am a proud owner of a new short handle sledge hammer from harbor freight which was needed in my case to break the metal-to-metal splines loose. Sometimes you really do need a bigger hammer, bigger as in weight, but smaller shaft to fit in the washer lol. Good luck to anyone watching in the future. You can do it. Cheers.
Guide is a god send! Very informative and straight to every point. Watch the whole video first before going along as if you can get there with an extension or long screwdriver there is NO NEED TO FULLY REMOVE THE DRUM. Unless you wanna check the underneath for damage or clean it out. To replace just the hub it's deff not needed
Omgoodness! That was the easiest instructions any repair man has ever demonstrated! You are my hero! It’s too late to go buy that part Saturday night but Monday I will be able to wash clothes! To think I was going to buy me a New Washer! I’m sooo Happy! Thank you a Million! I am Doing this!
Man this video was a life saver just had to order the drum hub and follow this video and boom replaced it and up an running saved money and a service fee and of course buying a new washer Thanks!
Thanks for the video !! I realized I could do this job after watching. I did take your advice at the end. This is a much easier job if you only remove the agitator plate at the bottom. I used a 1/2" cordless impact to remove the 7/16 bolt. Removing the plate was a bit of a chore, I used your trick by leaving the socket on the bolt head ans smacking it with a hammer. I also used a very small spray of WD40, and some plastic tools I have for removing interior panels on cars. Once the plate was off, the rest of the job was straight forward as you displayed in your video. The only advantage to removing the top, and basket is it makes it easier to remove all the change, but I was able to remove almost all of it with a small pair of needle nose, and patience. The entire job took me about 40 minutes, ten of that was getting the change out. I didn't have to move the washer, I didn't even unplug it ( not suggested) . Thank you again, videos like yours have saved me thousands of dollars, and I sincerely appreciate folks like you who take the time.
Thank you so much! Saved me big money I bought 2 of the hubs so I have a backup. My old one came right off without removing the basket because the teeth were so gone!
Thank You so much for the video! As a single mom, I don't always want to call an expensive repair person, so this helped a lot. I appreciated the fact that it was well filmed, the lighting was awesome and everything was shown step by step.
I have same model and same problem. Video saved me lots of money by showing me how to do it. Part was $26 took about 1 hour since I’ve never worked on a He machine before. Thanks for the help!
Great tutor my Maytag lost calibration you gave the best instructions and it worked. I agree with other posts, I have had Maytag for 30 years they don’t hold up to past Maytag reputations. I have a Maytag refrigerator only 4 years old bit the dust one Mounts past warranty. Thanks Mark
This video will not fix your “agitator won’t turn” rather he has demonstrated how to correct a problem with the drum spinning. Agitator itself must be replaced in this case. Still, excellent how to video, led me to the correct fix!
Thank you very much, this video saved me time and money. I replaced with tub in, using your technique to remove wash plate worked great. I did drop a screw, but using a magnet was able to recover. Thanks again!!
Thank you so much! Glad I found this video. I’m so done with Maytag Bravo, always a problem from day one. Your instruction shows every step needed which definitely will help me. Saves me moolah!
We just started noticing the agitator not spinning properly and after a good bit of looking at repair videos I came across yours and I have the same model! The video has been a huge saver to my budget! Thank you!
Could be the wash plate too!! My washer was squeaking badly with every agitation on the wash cycle it turned out that some of the splines were stripped out in the wash plate and there was a lot of play which made the drive belt slide on the roller
What symptoms? The guy showed nothing but a 2 second shot of the dryer making noise. I'd like to do this but I'm not going to waste my time if it isn't the problem.
I commend you on the video completely. The information was orderly, explained properly, and easy to follow. If you wanted to, you could create an entire library of "How-Tos". I would go to you first for any repair I need training for. I will subscribe and you keep up this quality product! Thank you!
Great video, found this after the appliance guy called. Total cost $175 to replace the drum Hub with a $10 part. I thought it was other stuff. Great video though, now i can replace myself next time
Great video!! Thank you so much for your hard work. I had to use a shoestring under the wash plate to get it off. Even then it wouldn't budge. So I tied the ends in a loop. This greatly improved my leverage and it popped right off. Thank you again!
Actually a great video. Took me about an hour to take it apart and about the same to redo it. If I did it again I could easily cut that time in half now. Nice to find a video of the exact machine I need to work on. Thanks!
Amazing tip on how to remove the wash plate. Thank you very much. I used a deep socket to tap so as not to damage the bolt. It worked after using gloves with gripping surfaces as you suggested.
You were spot-on for every step of this--THANK YOU! Saved us ~$700 for a new washer. The only difficulty I ran into was removing the wash plate. I hammered the bolt as suggested, but only damaged the bolt (had to order a new one--8 bucks or so). Finally, by prying up the plate itself, I got it loose and off. Other than that hiccup, all went well and my washer is washing again. I sincerely thank you for the video, Mark!
Great video Mark! Thank you very much. Your explanations and tips were spot on. I did get the hub out without taking off the basket, so your comment was right, either way it works, but you can save a few steps by lifting off the hub from the basket in place; I used a slotted screwdriver to start it and then pulled it with gloved hands. Thanks again, keep it up!
Any help on this? I don’t wanna take the basket off, I’ve tried and it will not budge. How exactly did you pull the hub off? Mine will float around but will not come off the shaft.
@@senpaixnick6770 I did it exactly as Mark mentioned in the video, unscrewed it about half way and struck it (carefully) a few times with the hammer. That loosened the hub and then I pulled it several times quickly (with rubber gloves to get a good grip) until it came off. It's not exact, but it worked with patience.
Harry Hastings thanks buddy, but I sawed it off. Turned out to be so much rust. Probably gonna experiment with some anti-seize and see if it happens again. Thanks for your time.
If you have a spare wire clothes hanger handy you can make a handle to help remove the wash plate. Cut the twisted part off the hangar. Make a 90 degree bend on each end of the hanger. Feed the bent ends into holes on opposite sides of the wash plate. Use holes toward the outside of the wash plate so you have room to use the hammer. Gently pull up on the hanger while taping the wash plate bolt with a hammer or mallet. If you pull too hard the hanger ends will straighten out before it enlarges or tears the holes. The hub was my issue, teeth were ground off. Your video helped make quick work of it once I used the hanger to make a handle tool.
Need more than just one like! This is the clearest, quickest and most sensible guide to the repair. I've seen other videos. :-( Why didn't they think of just driving the shaft out of the wash plate? Oh well, now I know. Also, Mark explains the tabs on the back of the washer. (I wouldn't need to even know that if I hadn't dropped one of the screws and had to pull the tub to get it back. ;-) ).
Fantastic instructions - worked well for me and I was able to change out the hub kit without removing the drum. Thank you for the clear and concise video - you saved me lots of money!
Thanks. You showed me enough to help me determine that I need to call a repairman. My Maytag is noisy and it doesn’t clean our clothes. Because we had no experience with this new washing machine we didn’t think the noise was unusual. I’m calling a repair guy. Bought it in April 2021. Still under warranty.
Mark - Thanks for this video! I found another that maybe makes getting the wash plate off easier - they just put a shoelace in and under and tried to get it about under the middle, pulled on both ends, and it worked - I tried that and it worked, though trying your technique could have helped loosen it too!
Thanks so much! I got $1.37 and a hair pin. I dint remove the tub but retrieved the foreign debris with needle nose pliers. Our splines were missing / smooth area where they used to be. $9 for the part today.
Excellent video! I watched it twice, just in case I had missed something the first time. While watching it the second time, I noticed that you briefly mentioned the sensor on the shifter assembly which senses the movement of the basket. I had wondered how the shifter knew when to shift. Now I know. Thank you!
Excellent photography, which is just as important as the repair instruction itself. The hammer trick at the beginning is a great idea. I'm an appliance repairer and I often have trouble getting the agitator out. I will try this next time.
Followed and worked like a charm! The only thing that I did different is that I did not find it necessary to take the top end off of the washer so I skipped that step. Thank you for the assist!!!
My friend Chubbs told me to get that hub clip in is to just tap it in, tap it in, just a little tap-tap-taperoo. Thanks for the great vid and props to Barbour's Auto Help for linking to it.
Thank you! I'm pretty handy but I wasn't figuring this one out. My washer was agitating (however kinda noisily), but not spinning for the drain cycle. I replaced the clutch motor and nothing. Your fix was the one!
Tip to remove shaft bolt: use an impact wrench. Tip to remove wash plate, building upon approach in this video: soak the shaft overnight with liquid wrench or similar product, and the next day, you will need a second person, you can take two small allen wrenches (get the biggest that will still fit in the small drain holes), each very tightly clamped with vice grips, and using the allen wrench (bent end), snag two opposing holes in the wash plate, as close to the shaft as possible. Have the second person pull up as hard as possible on the vice grips (ie, pulling up the wash plate). While they are pulling up, and with the shaft bolt "backed out" a few turns (i backed out a few more than he did) as described in this video, smack the shaft bolt with great impulse. Since there is no room to swing a full-size hammer in the wash basin, I used a long breaker bar, sitting on the shaft bolt, so I had room to swing a full size hammer above the machine. After 3 attempts, it finally broke loose! Our machine had 4 1/2 years use, and both the shaft bolt and wash plate were seized. The hub splines were completely smooth. Take care to line up the new hub such that the hub screw holes are aligned. Note also the new hub will not immediately slide all the way on, even after trying to tap it down. Worry not. As you tighten the screws in crisscross star pattern, like you do when tightening lug nuts on a car wheel, it will pull itself down flat to the surface.
Thanks so much for offering another solution. I’ve pounded on that damn bolt so much I’ve rounded out it’s edges a little bit. Going to try your method now!
I'm sub to you cause you know your stuff I know enough my agitator going slow ,said n I looked under replace need to replace module I have to put light clothes most of the time I have to rinse drain n its fine
Perfect example of a DIY video. It was a tremendous help. Too bad the teeth on the drive shaft were flattened and ruined on my machine. Unfortunately headed to Lowes for a new washer.
This washer is the devil. I've replaced the gear at least 3 times now and it keeps wearing out. First time I've seen the calibration steps on one of these videos, hopefully that helps! Thanks!
Great video and explanation, Mark. I am so thankful for people like you making videos to help people like me out. My agitator stopped working this morning, so I feel a lot more comfortable inspecting it later today to see what is going on. Also know that the two potential parts are less than $50, gives me peace of mind. Thank you very much!
Thanks Mark! Normally, I would buy the part and make the fix. This time, I decided to inspect to make sure more was not broken. Turns out the nut had slipped and only required tightening, I did decide to add some loctite. I am sure I will be replacing the drum hub at some point...
I already had washer (exact same one as yours ) on its back and was in process of taking the splutch off. I while looking for the video about the splutch actuator removal i came across you video. I got thinking about maybe I was going at the wrong problem, I had already found a bunch more coins after removing the washplate and moving the shaft from teh bottom pulley. I immdeiately stopped what I was doing, put the bottom end back together flipped washer back up and began working on the part you replaced...(no need to remove tub). I had previously tried working the washplate by hand and would get that same grinding sound. pulled the hub off and immediatley noticed the splines were wore down. while we have a big appliance parts warehouse here in town, the needed part was not in stock. Amazon in stock and will be here on Sunday, today is friday. Thanks for great video. Its hard sometimes to find just the right diagnosis of a problem
Great video! My problem is that the washer spins but doesn't agitate. I changed both-hub and the agitator but it didn't help-washer still doesn't agitate. What should i do next? Thanks so n advance
Awesome Awesome Awesome! Just finished replacing the hub with my husband. We would've given up without this video! Thank you so much! It works like brand-new washer! Saved us money!
All the new machines are cheap, complicated, hard to operate, full of plastic, and overpriced. That's why I started my own appliance repair company. Originally I just repaired computers, but people throw them away nowadays, I was going broke. Be surprised how easy it is to learn the trade and make a good living in this line of work. Cheers!
Thanks for the video man! You just saved me a few hundred dollars! I even ran across your post on Amazon and ordered the part before I saw the damn link you posted below! Haha Thanks again!
Thank you. so I found that my issue was the agitator plate was worn down.Should I replaced the hub too since I bought the piece already? Thank you for this video. I will order the plate
Thank you for this! Definitely will save me $200 next time. For my washer it's always the hub, and only takes the techs 2-5 minutes to replace it. They don't even take it apart. They just take off agitator. Wondered why so easy lol. Thank you!
Fantastic video. Thanks! I watched this and then turned to my wife and did my best Spicoli and said "I can fix it". Actually my hub looks ok although I'm ordering a new one. But the splines on the transmission are damaged. I see and smell metal shavings. Found another good video to replace that. I think the cause of it was the center bolt coming loose and it was slipping for a long time. Loctite, very important. Got that Maytag? Thanks again Mark. Well done.
Thanks So much … and Yes I didn’t have to remove the tub , or take off the whole top of machine… freakin great tip with the hammer & screw removal to release the part !!!!
Good video but realised afterwards that all i needed to do was pop the center cap for the agitator plate and remove without taking anything else off. My problem was the actual agitator plate was worn not the hub.
I think I might remove the tub like you did. U need to clean the shaft so the hub will go down far enough to put the shaft connector back in. Btw, when I remove tub rings, I usually push down on it right above the clip I am in clipping then unsnap the clip. The tub rings I have dealt with have a rubber like seal under them. This seal allows you to push down just enough to pull the snaps off the clips by hand. I have worked in a lot of appliances. This is the first time doing this repair. One more thing, glad you didn’t let that screw or two you dropped get away from you! I use a towel it rag over the slits around the basket in case I let one get away from me.
Very well explained. Very much appreciated. I changed my suspension rods, still shakes. This repair looks easier. My whirlpool has a large agitator in the middle. Im sure the principles are the same but do you have instructions of videos on removing the center agitator, to get to the gear case?? Thanks. MOD MVWC565FW1
We bought this washer brand new from Lowe's 3years ago. This problem started happening after 2years of use. Now we are replacing these hubs every few months. I now hate this washer. What a crock of crap Maytag you rip offs. Your products used to be good. By the way these hubs are about $17 on Amazon. You don't have to take the whole tub out either. Also using channel locks to get the agitator plate out, just beware. My son did it and cracked the whole thing. A new agitator plate is $100. Definately use the loctite when putting it all together. The first few times we replaced the hub the bolt came loose after a few weeks. And then I panicked thinking it was broken again. We have alot of boys and need a washer daily. Do yourself a favor. Don't buy this washer ever though, it's aweful. But if your watching this, you probably realize it now too. Helpful video Thanks.
I couldn't agree more. I'm now replacing the hub again, and also replaced the transmission once. Thankfully I'm semi-handy or I'd be pissing away some real cash to keep this junker running.
I'm pretty sure you're probably overloading the washer as they are really designed for smaller loads now, hence the "water-saving" claim, lol. I've had mine 6-7 years and it just started to not spin. My wife washes 3+ heavy loads on the Bulky setting daily so I'm thinking this is a small cheap fix that I don't mind doing every few years or so. My other problem though is that I need to replace the balancing springs.
Oh yes, same as you I learned the hard way to never buy Maytag again. This washing machine is a headache from day one. Thanks for other tips. I was thinking of not using loctite but now I will.
We are having this issue now too. We bought it new from Lowe’s 2 years ago and had troubles from day one. It wouldn’t spin at all then we finally figured it out and now ours agitates 3 quick times real loud and shuts off. We can’t figure out what’s wrong. Worst washer we’ve ever had.

Thanks for saving me 700 bucks. Came across your video when looking for new washing machine videos. All I needed was a 30 dollar part!!!!!

Thank you for this! I was struggling until I used your shoelace tip!
Please stop
All different! My bolt was finger tight! And the wash plate came off with just a few taps.
I want to thank you. This video saved us a repair visit. Everything went just the way you said they should.
I’ll be back for the next repair.

Dude I just fixed my own washer!! Too much laundry to wait for my husband to do it so I went for it! Great tutorial!! THANK YOU!!!
This video was perfect! My machine exhibited the same symptoms as yours. I replaced the part and it’s working perfectly! Thank you so much sir!!
What symptoms? The guy showed nothing but a 2 second shot of the dryer making noise. I'd like to do this but I'm not going to waste my time if it isn't the problem.
The symptom as stated in the title was the washer does not agitate properly.
I used this video a couple of years ago when my hub went out. It's out again and I'm so glad I saved this video. Perfectly evecuted
Fixed it all by myself! Thank you! Very good tutorial I didn’t even have to take the top off, I did it all with the drum in! So awesome!
I was gunna ask if that was even necessary.
Thank you very much sir, this was by far the best" how to "video I've ever seen.
You're welcome, I'm glad you found it helpful. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
Thank you! You've saved this housewife!
Life saver on getting this problem solved!
Did you have to remove the top of washer? Or can I do it without removing the top
Now I know. Thank you!
VERY HELPFUL! All you need to be a Maytag Bravos repairman.
Amazing step-by-step for simple diy guy like myself. Thank you so much for saving me a $ and/or agony trying to do it myself.
Great video, fixed my washing machine yesterday, $25 and 2 hours labor and I am washing clothes again, thanks
Wow. The last two minutes is what fixed our machine!
Awesome video I did everything exactly how you did although getting that agitator plate off was a real chore. Thanks a million.
Luckily my wife had a stubby hammer. I took the extension off the 11mm socket, couple taps with the hammer on the ratchet did it.
Dude, you're awesome! I had this exact same problem and was able to get if fixed by myself for $15, you rock!
Thank you this was very helpful! Was able to replace the hub and wash plate without taking it apart.
I'm sub to you cause you know your stuff I know enough my agitator going slow ,said n I looked under replace need to replace module I have to put light clothes most of the time I have to rinse drain n its fine
Worked for me, I just used a mallet to hammer it loose. Working fine now with the rest of your instructions. Thanks.
Perfect example of a DIY video. It was a tremendous help. Too bad the teeth on the drive shaft were flattened and ruined on my machine. Unfortunately headed to Lowes for a new washer.
Thank you very much for your helpful video. I am not very mechanically inclined but was able to complete this task with your help.
This washer is the devil. I've replaced the gear at least 3 times now and it keeps wearing out. First time I've seen the calibration steps on one of these videos, hopefully that helps! Thanks!
Such a great step-by-step video. You should have a link for people (like me) to donate a portion of the $150 service call you saved them from paying!
Legit!! Thank you. By far one of the best how to videos out there.
That you sooo much !! We followed what you said to a T. My washer is now up and running again🎉❤😊
I didn't take the drum out of the washer but I was able to replace the hub thank you so much for this video it helped allot
Thank you for your video I will be working on my washer for the first time to replace the hub. Wish me luck
Ver helpful. You just saved me the cost of a repairman, probably about $200. Thank you.
Great video fixed my problem with clean clothes coming out of the machine wet! Thank you
Thanks Mark! Normally, I would buy the part and make the fix. This time, I decided to inspect to make sure more was not broken. Turns out the nut had slipped and only required tightening, I did decide to add some loctite. I am sure I will be replacing the drum hub at some point...
Thank you worked out great. I did take the drum out and wash/ wipe everything out!!
Now the second time I’ve had to use this tutorial. Thanks Mark! You’ve saved me hundreds of $$$$$ 🙌🏼
Awesome how-to! Saved me many hours of frustration. Thank you!
Best DIY video for MAYTAG BRAVO WASHER REPAIR 👍🏻
Great video! My problem is that the washer spins but doesn't agitate. I changed both-hub and the agitator but it didn't help-washer still doesn't agitate. What should i do next? Thanks so n advance
Great video. Especially on the Diagnostic run. Thanks!
I have a family of 6. We are doing wash 2x a week (4-5 loads x2= 8-10 loads weekly). The plastic spline lasts 2 years for us. An easy change.
Thank you. All I needed was the calibration and it worked!
Love the calibration info! We need more! 👍 Well done!
Awesome Awesome Awesome! Just finished replacing the hub with my husband. We would've given up without this video! Thank you so much! It works like brand-new washer! Saved us money!
Them new fangled machines are a menace!
Worse than cars with all the plastic, calibration, computers, and such.
Great video!
Thank you for that easy to follow, concise yet very informative, washer repair tutorial!
I've subscribed!
I think I can do this! Thanks for the throughness of your video! Always feel like I have someone telling me step by step...Thank you!!
You are such a good teacher! Thank you!
Great video. Mine was doing exactly this. But my hub was so warn when I removed the screws it just slid right off without removing the basket.
Great video man! Same exact issue on mine, after 15 bucks on Amazon and your video I’m back in business thanks!
Very well explained. Very much appreciated. I changed my suspension rods, still shakes. This repair looks easier. My whirlpool has a large agitator in the middle. Im sure the principles are the same but do you have instructions of videos on removing the center agitator, to get to the gear case?? Thanks. MOD

You might look at the shaft spline
