I remember the launch of Sentry came with a built-in rumor campaign that he was the lost post-Atlas, pre-Fantastic Four creation of Stan Lee and another artist (not Ditko or Kirby). It was the comics equivalent of Capitol Records hinting that Klaatu’s debut album in the 1970s might actually be The Beatles (they couldn’t say!).

I agree, Sentry could've been great as a "One Arc Only" character. But you can't be out here leaving money on the table. Am I right?

I like the Sentry and his golden long locks. There is something refreshing about a hero that everyone had to forget and a secret history that was in front of us all along.

there was a little mini-thing in the Doctor Strange from 2018 or 2019 i think where the Sentry was up on like a mountain or a high glacier, somewhere cold, living in a cozy cabin just giving with his pot belly and all and doctor strange shows up and BOOM it turns out he's just been standing there in the cold and the cabin he was living in and i think a girlfriend/wife they were like a projection Dr strange made. He had been standing immobile in the snow for like years or months it was cool.

I personally really liked his showing in World War Hulk, afraid to step in until he was absolutely certain it was the best thing to do, that no matter how much he let loose, the damage would be less than what the Hulk would do, and in fighting the Hulk, he could use his full strength.

Sentry in the form he is presented in the original comic can't exist in the marvel canon, it presents the problem stated above, why don't he show show up and win the battle. It the same as Captain Marvel/Shazam in the DC universe, it's too powerful in his original form, they don't need two Supermen... And marvel never had one so... The sentry at most have to function like a tiny temporal hulk, like... He can be the sentry for only 1 minute before the void appear or something, so he have to be the ultimate weapon and that why he never shows up...

I always felt like the sentry was building towards something catastrophic, like the coming of the void in his true form. I thought the character was going to lead to a massive event about HIM and the VOID. Maybe something that needed the attention of the whole marvel universe. Not him making appearances here and there and being killed off. The void actually had some intrigue and intimidation going for it and in the end there was no real payoff.

Re: your question about the white eyes--it could be a reference to "Village of the Damned" (based on John Wyndham's The Midwich Cuckoos), about alien/human children with vast telepathic powers. The children's eyes glow when using their powers, and the climax of the film is about them trying to read their human mentor's mind while he's focusing on the image of a wall to keep them from finding out about the bomb in his suitcase. They finally breach his defenses, but it's too late and they're all destroyed. (They were out to conquer the world, and they hurt people, so they weren't all that innocent...)
The point is, the white eyes reference is pointing to how the heroes are trying to get to the truth about the Sentry--before it's too late...

It's a little different but I got that vibe. As to the death of Superman panel, I don't think it was meant to be a parallel of Superman so much as being shorthand for "his death was THIS IMPACTFUL". Like, showing he died like Supes implies that the mourning and aftershocks were similar as well.

The Sentry is an immortal warper of reality, within which lives an even more powerful creature, the Void. Sentry is the personification of good and evil that never dies. Not every Marvel comic book fan, or even not every Sentry fan, is able to fully understand the concept of this character. And in fact, he is completely different from the well-known Superman. I have to agree that the Sentry has never been better than he was in this mini-series. It can be really hard to write a compelling story about a hero with deep seated mental issues while they retain their heroic nature (see Knight, Moon). Unfortunately, The Sentry has yet to find that author.
Btw, another retcon hero you may like is Adam Brashear, the Blue Marvel. I really love that story and how it tackles race in comics.

the fact that the sentry and moon knight are both seen a marvel version of superman and batman respectively and also both have split identities is such a weird coincidence and I'm surprised marvel hasn't done a team up between them.
I think WWH comes close. It doesn't use the void trope but still carries over that same message but with agloraphobia instead, a man so terrified of his potential for destruction he removes himself from the equation entirely, only joining in when it becomes clear that he's the only one able to stop the hulk.

  • @HankChinaski27
    @HankChinaski27 2 роки тому +2

I like to call him "Captain Retcon."
Reed kinda reminds me of Rick Sanchez evil. Like, he's sometimes evil, we justify it, and we all just love him because of the moments he shines. He operates in that moral quagmire that Yellowjacket and Wasp does. I love Jan and Hank, but damn, doesn't that whole story kinda taint years of continuity before and after that moment? Reed has those moments of what he would probably call "moral ambiguity." But then he goes and saves the entire universe, monologuing how he loves his family, and all is forgiven.
As for the art of his origin, it is so sad that parts of it don't work because the moments where Jae Lee nails it are truly breathtaking. It takes a lot for a person to step outside traditional esthetic bombast and do a style so much his own. Even his early stuff in Namor was flawed but interesting. His style IMO worked better on his Inhumans run or any of The Dark Tower books. For Sentry, I think his deep blacks work really well with the ominous feeling of The Void. Some panels are so black it feels oppressive.
Paul Jenkins is just an amazing talented writer when it comes to character driven stories. He turns superheroes into real people pieces. I loved his work on Hulk with Ron Garney, and again, Inhumans is near perfect to me. While I like the continued appearances of Sentry more than you do, I do feel in a lot of ways his first story will always be his best story. You can't put the genie back in the bottle.

The angles in that cover was used for poster art to the early Wes Craven film Last House on the Left. I'm sure Craven lifted the idea from something he came across.

I always felt that Sentry had the same kind of deal as the DC character Triumph. Im not going to get into the whole who copies who thing but there are very notable similarities. I will say that Sentry proved to be a more fleshed out version of the "Forgotten Hero with Problems".

While I know the stand-alone run was iconic, and there were... missteps bringing him back, I do like characters like him and Hyperion being in the Marvel universe. I can only hope that someday he gets a rendition as incredible and satisfying as Hickman's run with Hyperion.

This made me think of the twelve issue series The Lost Generation. Because of the seven year rule, the Fantastic Four first appeared in 2013. In 1990, they had debuted in 1983. So Marvel shoved a team of heroes into the gap. I wonder if this is still considered part of continuity. And speaking of John Byrne, what about his Spider-Man reboot. I always thought it was hilarious that Peter was caught in a huge explosion, but he remembered getting bit by a spider, and that's where he got his powers from.

wow, what an origin story. I really enjoy the art as it makes the heroes look... unheroic, If that makes any sense. I am definitely going to have to pick these up sometime. Honestly, though I do think it should have been a one-shot, as it would have given much more meaning to the character to not bring him back. It also questions the ethics of the other superheroes to basically erase a being from ever having existed. I like it!

LOVE this woman!!!!! Thank you Sasha for once again providing awesome analysis of this character, and his "first" appearance. You should go to the mirror and give your script writer a BIG smile, she earned it. Yes the Sentry is similar to Superman, but only in superficial ways, sadly he isn't written to focus on his "genie out of the bottle" aspect. You know, when he appears, the subsequent arrival of the Void should be an ominous "cloud" over whatever nick-nack conflict the other heros have called him,(Sentry) for. Long vs short hair???? It's all the same, he even looks the same with that mask, they should change his hairstyle for every appearance, that could highlight his inconsistent mental stability,......you just know, he IS the Void, like the professor X evil that he represses, that becomes Onslaught, you know the villain of that X-Men Micronaughts miniseries. PEACE dear sister, Merry Christmas to you and your AWESOME family.

The Sentry in itself is self poetic, but needless to say I kinda saw this coming, him having sketchy memory as he notices the second coming, his gold eyes appearing as he reminds other heroes, reeds reaction, as well as his costume materialising and memory recovering in respect to the heroes call. I'd like to think the quick witted viewers probably found this out before me or I'm just slow on the uptake. either way I won't spoil the fun, truly a good find.

I loved the Sentry since i first read it and heard about it. Its the idea that he is a self reality bender and is as powerful as he thinks he is. But to balance that he probably thought if im like this then some else must be out there to counter me i.e. The Void. The idea that the only way to get rid of him and The Void was to Neralize the planet and everything that remembered him in this plane of existance was awesome. I thiink him just being a one off char that shows up for plot or a minor char is good because its like a ace in the hole that you can only use before a short time before it blows up. Have him come in do some flash and razzle then "o shit time to put you back in the bottle". To me its one of the better ways they have dealt with characters that are way to powerful for an everyday occurance. Instead of just making a maguffin that stops the ubermench "in the nick of time" he has it built in and its well developed and can be used ,
