My favorite Wonder Girl origin is the one she was never given: Diana's Boston host and sort-of foster mother Julia Kapatelis was rescued from drowning as a child by an Amazon, raised by them and returned to the mainland with her memories suppressed. When this was revealed to Julia, she was told that this had happened to many girls over the years.
I can't help but think this was originally intended to be Donna's new origin, but it was vetoed at some point.

They had their chance to return to basics when they came out with Rebirth. They simply could've reverted back to the "rescued orphan" thing and be done with it. After all, after Flashpoint, many pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths elements were restored...such as Barry Allen being the Flash again. But no, they had to go muddy the waters once again and re-introduce her as a magical being formed from clay.

when I read the 60's version of the Teen Titans, I used to read the fan mail column in the back. In one issue the fan column editor was answering a kid's question about Donna's origin story, and the editor said Donna was her own person and like a little sister to Wonder Woman. In a later issue, after a new fan mail editor was hired, a kid wrote in asking for more details on how Donna Troy joined the wonder family, and the editor said that no, Donna was not her own person, just a teenage version of wonder woman, and vehement that that's the way it always was. There was not only such a lack of communication between different series in the old days, but lack of communication within the same team of creators

The confusion over Donna Troy’s origin stems from the constant changes in Wonder Woman as new editors and writers took charge and kept trying to revamp her to boost sales and iron out continuity. The result was horribly messy and confusing continuity. This happened both pre- and post-Crisis.

    • @richardledoux5868
      @richardledoux5868 Рік тому +10

Exactly right. Crisis on Infinite Earths messed up everything in DC's continuity and Donna Troy was possibly the biggest casualty. DC has been scrambling to try to put some logical continuity back in ever since with reboot after reboot. Ironically the purpose of Crisis was to get rid of all the multiple Earths that someone thought too confusing. Now, after almost forty years, they're throwing in the towel with a new company wide event called Infinite Frontiers. In this series the restored Multi-verse will be expanded even more to something called the Omniverse in which EVERYTHING that has ever happened in DC comics since Superman first appeared in 1937 DID happen.

I love your video dedicated to my favorite DC character...Donna Troy
I hope in the current Wonder Woman series, someone addresses Donna's origin? Since Rebirth, Donna has yet to make an appearance in the Wonder Woman series.
DC so missed the perfect opportunity to connect her as Diana's sister. In the current run(WW#73), a young Diana and Hippolyta travel to a different dimension and meet Empress Hippolyta. This blond hair version of Hippolyta ( my fav from the Silver Age) took her clay baby and threw it in the ocean. This left Diana confused and she questioned the Empress about drowning her "baby". What the writer should've done was, have Diana and her mother search for the clay figure. Once they discover the clay child, take it to Themyscira and ask the goddesses to bring it to life. Hippolyta could raised the child and give her the name Donna. A few years later, Donna sneaks off the island to follow her big sister Diana and becomes...
    Wonder Girl. Perfect!

I know it's mean, but he was an even better Flash as a martyr, THEN Wally took over and was an even better Flash than Barry. Seriously, after Crisis, when Wally started as the Flash, one of the best things plot-wise was how he kept "holding back" because of Barry's memory, and how he gets over it.

Why they just don't combine the two most famous origins? She was created as an evil duplicate of Wonder Woman who was put in suspended animation, and then she was reactivated and they put fake memories on her of being a young girl rescued from a fire by Wonder Woman. This would make a very interesting relationship between both of them, as Diana is known as the spirit of truth (with her lasso and everything) and yet she's lying to her own reflection just because she loves Donna and doesn't want her to be evil.
Meanwhile, following Donna's personality in the Teen Titans comics where she's basically miss perfect, it would be pretty cool to see her reaction after knowing that everything she believed in was a lie, and she's in fact just a clone of an existing hero, paving her way of self acceptance and dedicating herself as being her own hero, embracing the life she was given and not letting her past take advantage of her

All they really had to do was tell Perez that he can continue to tell year one stories in Wonder Woman (in the late 80s), but the stories had to be set in year one of the current heroic age. Meaning that she had to debut within a year of Superman and Batman. Same with Hawkman.
So that Wonder Woman could be there to rescue the baby that came to be known as Donna. Except that she couldn't be a baby, since it couldn't be more than ten years ago. So she would have had to be six, then seven, then eight, then nine.

I'm mostly a Silver and Bronze Age guy and I'll be the first to admit how goofy they were with origins and changes....but the more recent era takes it to another level changing things over and over...You start to wonder if they just love doing origin stories because #1s sell better.

When I hear about Donna Troy's origins I've noticed that it's never mentioned that her name was a play on the actor Troy Donahue's name. Before the 1969 Marv Wolfman story, "Who Is Wonder Girl?" Wonder Girl never has a "real name" and was always called Wonder Girl or a nickname. I noticed the play on Donahue's name but I'm old enough I bought the original comic on the newstand.

Superboy's origin is pretty messy, too. And I'm pretty sure there are at least three different Supergirls who look identical and I honestly couldn't tell them apart if I tried; but I've never even tried to understand their different origins....one of them is literally an angel..I think?

One small detail, first appearing in 1964 in The Brave and the Bold #54, the team of Kid Flash (Wally West), Robin (Dick Grayson), and Aqualad (Garth) shared an adventure together. In Brave and the Bold #60 the addition of Wonder Girl (Donna Troy) was added to their ranks, and this was the first time they were called the Teen Titans.

Speaking of retcons you would just pretend never happened, kinda pissed off about the Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver retcon. They're identity as Magneto's children is integral to the characters story's. That'd be like if they retconned Superman to be human or something like that. If they did it in all alternate universe it wouldn't matter as much, but the 616 characters though it just feels like a perversion of who they are.

You mentioned Bob Haney's role in how this mess started. At certain times, stories he wrote, particularly in the Brave and Bold, were so far outside what DC felt they could keep in, they had to resort to a never-seen, only-reffed variant on Earth-1 (Pre-COIE) called Earth-B, which was also used for oddballs like heroes teaming up with Jerry Lewis and Bob Hope (not kidding). There's articles out there, but no videos yet. I think that might be one for your approach to these matters.

I don't know why DC can't just make her and Diana biological sisters and be done with it. I like the biological sister route because, in regards to the trinity, there's already a clone/duplicate (Superman) and rescuing/raising an orphan (Batman). Just have Donna be Diana's younger sister and Hippolyta's daughter and leave it at that.

If I were DC editorial in 1985, I would just not reboot Wonder Woman but have her adventures continue after Crisis On Infinite Earths, only this time let her reveal her identity to the world and let her still be married to Steve Trevor (as they were in Wonder Woman #329). That way, Donna Troy would not have her history be altered. And to be honest, I like Donna Troy’s Pre-Crisis origin (Silver Age backstory and Wolfman/Perez expansion) because it explains who she is, what her backstory is about, and expands her history further.

  • @EVENINGWOLF666

My first exposure to Wonder Girl was in the 70's in t he original Teen Titans run in issue 38, then later when the New Teen Titans arrived in the early 80's. By then the origin of her being rescued by Wonder Woman and not having any memories of her family was the accepted origin in the comics and probably by most who had not been familiar with her origin in the Wonder Woman comics. I always thought that her struggle to uncover her origins made her a more sympathetic character, although it did seem a bit TOO close to the Struggle Lilith had with finding her own origins in the original Titans series from the 60's and 70's.
I actually walked away from comics for a number of years in late '86 so I missed out on most of the confusing bits and retcons that came later, although I did spend some time catching up on things more recently thanks to the DC streaming service having so many comics online and I can tell you that I didn't like all the changes, the retcons the overall weirdness. I have a really strong attachment to the characters as they were from the 70's and 80's when I was growing up and for me, those will always be the main versions of those characters, including Wonder Girl.
As far as characters that have confusing origins two of the ones that I can think of you have covered, Spider Woman and Power Girl, although Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch have some pretty confusing plot points in their stories as well and might make for an interesting video since they have been through a few retcons over the years.

I posted in the video on Captain Marvel (Fawcett/DC) that he's an origin of love to see you delve into. In the wake of Legends DC did the first (to my knowledge) take at their company attempt at their origin. Then, in my favorite take, Jerry Ordway did a few years after that. Then there's the New 52 take, inspired, partly, by Flashpoint.
There's also the curious case of who knows Billy is Captain Marvel. I'm the first arc of Batman/Superman it seemed to be a plot point that it wasn't well known. Around that time Billy stepped away from a burgeoning romance with Stargirl because Flash only saw an adult and a teenage making eyes at each other.
Sometimes DC characters carry on like they all know Billy is a kid and other times they're clueless.
I'd also love to see a video on Captain Atom, including nods to his Watchmen counterpart and Grant Morrison's multiversity (which first appeared in Final Crisis) version. Then there's Breach from right before Infinite Crisis, who was said to be an alternate Captain Atom. Oh, not to mention Cap's foray into the Wild storm universe, effectively ending it (not part of his origin, but interesting, nonetheless).

Brava! It is a crime this has so few views and likes. I love Donna. I have read the Titans since I was a kid, pre The New Teen Titans. I have to admit, I ended up liking the Dark Angel/key to multiverse, mainly because you can "because, Comics" it and move forward AND it gave her some needed weight and importance in the multiverse. I *hated* the New 52 origin, but also, New 52. Best thing? Some sorely needed updates on costumes (no outer man-panties), which Bendis (screaming and hand shaking) just blew off.
Donna deserves a lot better and the Titans show bought my good will bringing her in, and my ire taking her out, and she damn well better get purple rayed- and remember when Rachel revived the deer back to life in season 3 or I'm out.
I love all of your takes, and videos, because you have taken the time to learn the lore. So you just rock on, with your magenta self!

Marvel also had teen popularity with the Human Torch. Johnny's youth and popularity had to have been a factor in going forward with Spider-Man being pitched on his own. In fact, Johnny and Bobby Drake were both cornerstones of Strange Tales. (And 8in a failed, ambitious Spider-Man/Robin fanfic of their parallel lives, instead of dropping in on the Fantastic Four, Spidey raided the Titans. 😅 )

I was following you easily up until the magic duplicates part and I think I maybe got some of the rest. The duplicates stuff seems to have happened during a period when I was living somewhere without access to a comic shop. When I came back it was halfway through the new 52 silliness. I've read Infinite Crisis a few times after I got back to comicdom and find it a bit confusing, presumably because I'm missing the prelude and context. So I decided to do as you suggest and just go with the flow, ignore the bits that make no sense and just enjoy the stories.

Poor Donna...they need to just go back to the basic simple origin of Wonder Woman resucing her from the burning building, brought to Themyscira, given powers and training by the Amazons and adopted by Queen Hippolyta making her Diana's sister. Hopefully now that the Doomsday Clock has suppose to reset the DC Universe, making Wonder Woman the first superhero , this also makes her a founding member of the Justice Society of America back in the 40s and all versions of the Justice League, so that should allow DC to go back to Donna's first origin and get rid of the other confusing ones
