    Let’s hear your London, UK and adventures abroad culture shocks! What are your perspectives?
    (Also I do apologize - some of the volume levels are a bit off this week! I’ll get that & the music sorted next episode.)

    You missed the most important thing about the three pin plug: if it falls to the ground it will fall pins upwards. Treading on it with bare feet is the single most painful thing you will ever do, especially in the middle of the night.
    Congratulations on your one year, you have now earned the right to tut loudly at tourists who stand on the wrong side of the escalator on the tube.

      Ouch!! But, for me, that comes in a close second to stepping on LEGO pieces!

      Haha! I have yet to step on a plug - phew! This year will be our first full-swing tourist season (I’m told last year was still a tad quiet). Glad I’ve done plenty of “touristy” things already 👍🏻

    As I have never been to Canada, can't say how things are there - London is probably the most tolerant and welcoming city in the world.

    • @ACanadianAbroadMichelle

      Many parts of (if not most) Canada have similar qualities; welcoming and tolerant. I’ve found the transition to London relatively comfortable… no regrets 👍🏻

    About the three prongs, I forgot to put the adapter on and proceeded to turn on the hairdryer. The entire hotel lost power! I felt horrible and let me tell you, the manager was not pleased 😃, rightfully so. I was served a delicious breakfast nevertheless and was super careful after that.
    Was staying there to look after my mother who found herself in a local hospital while she was touring the UK. The hotel was extremely accommodating as I asked to use their kitchen to cook mom’s soup, the only thing she would eat after a quadruple bypass.
    Love the UK and it’s people. Thank you for a walk down memory lane from British Columbia.

      😂 Maria this made me laugh! What an uncomfortable situation to be in and I’m sure you’re not the only one! Glad you hear that the hotel was so accommodating during such a difficult time with your mom. I love it here too!

    I really love the quality of your montage, worthy of a visit UK advert. Some stunning shots that really show off some of the country's nicest places of interest very well. Almost makes me want to visit as a tourist, and I was born and bred in South West London , and lived there for 40 years, lol.
    I immigrated to Australia some 12+ years ago and I have found my own culture shocks when moving here too. Its funny how similar, yet different we all are, CANZUK for the win, together we are stronger! 🥰

    • @ACanadianAbroadMichelle
      @ACanadianAbroadMichelle  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you! It was so fun going through footage and remembering all of the things we have seen in the past year. After moving around a bit, I really do find that there are more similarities between people and places than differences when you look for them. Glad you enjoyed the episode!

    The real culture shock comes when you go home. Not all water in the UK is hard, but a lot is. Talking of spelling and pronunciation, the village, castle and Marquess, all of Cholmondly, pronounced Chumly. Hugging and kissing complete strangers is creepy.

      During this year's visit home, I almost jaywalked a busy intersection (to be clear there were no cars in my way)... had to remind myself that this is illegal in Ontario LOL!

    if you are eating in a uk restaurant you are entitled to your money back if there is something wrong with your food but you must give the establishment a chance to correct or replace the food before you consume it all so that you still pay. The check by a waiter asking if everything is OK is your chance to do that before you finish it. It is a 'purposeful' check. You the customer are the quality checker. British people do not like to be pestered by waiters so don't expect attention like you do in Canada and waiters see no need to constantly prove they are deserving of a tip by asking you things all the time. They just do their job. Everyone is happy.

    • @ACanadianAbroadMichelle
      @ACanadianAbroadMichelle  Рік тому

      I was in Canada in October and realized that I’ve adjusted to the restaurant ways here in the UK. As you put it, I also don’t prefer to be pestered. Let me eat my food in peace 😂

    Most people would find it annoying if the waiter kept coming over bothering you when you were trying to eat your meal.

      I guess I got used to it over the years! Now I appreciate the lack of attention 😅

    FYI…Fillet is an English word and comes as a contraction of filleting not the French filet which is a totally different word and spelt with one l. Fab vlog really enjoyed it.

    • @ACanadianAbroadMichelle
      @ACanadianAbroadMichelle  2 роки тому

      This explains ALOT! It’s curious that Canadians will say filleting, the verb (not often, but it happens), but we certainly would not say fillet. Maybe it has something to do with our French influence/ancestry! Glad you enjoyed the episode!

    I totally cringed when you said filleT 😂 One thing I loved about visiting the UK is that it's legal to drink in public. It was so uncomfortable the first time, but now I'm not sure why Canada hasn't caught on to that. And memory lane gave me all the feels, bring on part 2!

    • @ACanadianAbroadMichelle
      @ACanadianAbroadMichelle  2 роки тому

      I bet you cringed lol! We can do “other things” in public in Canada, but alcohol… NO WAY! I’m glad you enjoyed the episode - memory lane was my favourite part to make 🥰

      At least 30% of English is constructed of French,why pick out a random French word and use a French pronounciation,why not all the French words if thats the case,then where do you stop,all the Scandinavian words in original pronounciation,German,Greek Latin etc.etc ,to English speaking ears it is deeply pretentious and very funny when you get it wrong as in 'entree'
      for main course,when it means 'starter'

  • @johnmichaelcule8423
    @johnmichaelcule8423 2 роки тому

    To say 'Fill-AY' is to sound pretentious, as if you have a Frenchman leaning over your shoulder correcting your... Oh, I'm terribly sorry. Forget I said anything.
    And when I went to New York and had servers coming back and asking if everything was fine every five minutes and coming back and trying to start a conversation... Well, I swiftly started longing for a surly Yorkshire waitress. And I'm from Manchester! (I understand parts of New England can be as reserved as Britain.)

    • @ACanadianAbroadMichelle
      @ACanadianAbroadMichelle  Рік тому

      I wonder if the fillet (fill-ay) thing has to our with our strong French influence in Canada, then. I had a similar dining experience during my recent Canada visit, servers were getting on my nerves and then I realized why... I've come around to the laid back approach after all!

  • @Andy_U
    @Andy_U 2 роки тому

    Hiya. Pretty sure it's pronounced "fill-ay" when there's only one 'L' - Filet - or when speaking French, otherwise it's "fill-it" because of the 2 'L's. Of course, one can also argue you perform the action in order to produce the specific cut - i.e., "please fill-it this meat/fish so I can have a fill-ay to cook". As Mrs. Merton (who?) would say, "let's have a heated debate!" No, let's not. Loved the video, please make a part 2, at least. Stay safe. All the best to you.

    7:00 the quality check happens on the pass, not 10 minutes after its been served. nothing more annoying than constant interruptions from wait staff

    Another nice video, Michelle! I definitely enjoy your “culture shock” episodes, so more please! Trying to think of a “culture shock,” I’m pretty good with most everyday customs by now (acquired over many years of short trips). But, when actually residing in England (on a work visa) for over a year, we found that having to register with the local police was a bit of a shock. Re pubs - When I visit my friends in Sanderstead, I’m always told to plan it around their local’s quiz night😅.
    If you want to watch another Canadian’s (also from the Toronto area) views on life in the UK, check out her “Adventures and Naps” UA-cam channel.
    Glad to see you and Eric found a new place😊

      Quiz night is a great pub feature - one I must experience again! I’m a fan and subscriber of Adventure and Naps as well! We did find a new place… in a VERY different part of London and will be moving next week 😓 hence my “holiday”.
