  • The Stuart Hall Foundation's Annual Autumn Keynote with Arundhati Roy, September 2022.
In the twenty-five years since the release of her world-renowned Booker Prize winning novel, The God of Small Things (1997), Arundhati Roy has consistently interrogated the meaning of justice in all its complexity, social, economic and ecological. Her last novel was The Ministry of Utmost Happiness (2017) which has been translated into more than 40 languages. Her latest collection of essays is Azadi: Freedom, Fascism, and Fiction in the Age of the Virus (2020).
As we endure an unprecedented global pandemic, governmental inaction in response to the climate crisis, and the intensification of authoritarian practices across the global north and south alike, Arundhati Roy reflects on how we have arrived at this conjuncture and what might come next. In her keynote titled 'Things That Can and Cannot Be Said: The dismantling of the world as we knew it', Roy discusses the local and global dimensions of these crises and the ongoing resistance to them. Roy is then joined in conversation with Farzana Khan, Executive Director and Co-founder of Healing Justice London, and responds to questions from the audience.

Thank You, Ms Roy - To put it out in way and in details, what no body dare say in its entirety in INDIA. What makes (me) in more awe - It came from a class author pen and subsequently spoken in her voice.e.g. put things in verbatim using native language BUt Not to miss out translation of each of those words/phrases for the audience in the Hall -:)

"for good or for bad, she was the most singular, most profound influence in my life. we were dangerous foes, and desperately good friends. She was the obstacle race that I structured myself around from the time I was very young" (26:26)

I have read a good number of writers of this genre, Indian and overseas, but such incisive language as that of Arundhati's is rare.

Is this the India for which many died in independence struggles, and more die on our borders every month?
    They made/make a mistake.
    All for this?

@babahanuman83 the fact that they are allowed to critise or protest against modi is enough to prove that he is not a dictator...dictator kill whole families and communities for less than that

1:30:41 anytime religion rules political agendas it exhibits its nasty true self serving understanding to that religion which is far from the true essence of the sacredness of Religion. No religion divides, segregates or kills . Unless Greed is your religion. No one should ever be given the power to take away the freedom of speech. No one can ever stifle the longing to be free.
