So today we are getting back on the Caddy, if you remember we purchased this VW caddy which had been in a front end cash and we bought it from Copart, it seemed to me like it just needed a couple of parts and it would be an easy fix... it wasn't. Today we run into more issues with the caddy which I assume have been caused by the accident.

😊
Could just replace the part of the sub frame where the bolt has snapped, the subframe isn't hard to remove and you can buy the parts at a scrappy for less than that welder
Yeah the subframes 3 piece's. you can just get that side . Same thing happened to me snapped bolt
@@joenotley5911 yeah man that's what I was thinking, could just replace the one side. I've got a later caddy with the steel subframe and that was easy enough to remove
Love watching your videos Lee. They always show me what not to do.
Which is everything he does lol
Like paying more for used parts than they cost new!
Couple of tips for you. Those bolts that seized clean the end threads with a wire brush and give them a squirt before you start to loosen them. It's the shit on the thread that locks them up. Get yourself a quality set of six sided sockets.
You know it will be a good one then you hear phrase "it's not ideal" :D
There’s a little triangle pointing down at the point where you need to jack it up. It’s on the side of the sills. It’s double skinned for strength.
Feel your pain. Some days are just like that!
Them bolt's always snap mate, you can just remove the bracket with the snapped bolts in and replace it you dont have to remove the subframe either and they are the same subframe on a mk5 golf, A3, Leon, EOS Jetta etc
There is always that one bolts that turns a job form a 5 minute job to a day
So it's not just me that snaps bolts working on my old car then! Great stuff Lee, you'll get there mate
glad im not the only one who makes easy jobs hard. that bolt is the sorta shit that happens to me all the time, im lucky that way....hope you get it out
Doing a good job mate! i wouldn’t have the first clue what to do in these situations but I enjoy watching your videos! Love the caddy stuff!
Sorry Lee.....but keep going do NOT give in, the temptation is strong but your
STRONGER Bro
Said it before in previous videos, get a mapp gas blowtorch instead. Itll heat stuff up way easier than the lighter on steroids you currently have, probably one of my best purchases going from the exact same torch you have just now 😂
Yeah there good for lighting fires in the garden but for harder uses nah mate 😂 definitely get a good torch...was better off using a can of lynx 😂
Way to old to understand this ' drifting ' malarkey , but really love all the stuff you do on your drive . Really feel for you when it goes wrong , but perversely makes great videos . Thanks Lee , good luck mate .
Don't heat the bolt it will expand in the subframe . Don't really want to heat the subframe up either if it's alloy it will stress it and likely crack it.
You need a nice workshop to work in.
Triangles showing on the outside of seal are jacking points 🙃
Should have run the bolt up the thread first and then weld behind the nut.
Or cut flush with a grinder and drill the remains out.
It looks like you've replaced that arm/Bush bolt with a normal nut/bolt-it might not have the same properties as the proper bolt for the car
That subframe bolt, when heating it I’d personally heat the subframe redhot, put some ice water on the bolt, and then try to unthread it after that. Should expand the subframe and shrink the bolt a little bit, but might be just enough for it to come out
Heat the nut not the bolt 👌🏼 if you heat the bolt it just expands in the nut... snap 😊
Best way to start my Sunday
The Charlie bit my finger impression was gold 😂😂😂
Well done Lee. Made me laugh. Last thing i want to do is snap this bolt. Next scene bolt snapped 😂
Safety squint. Funny as.
Lee make sure you hammer the star drive into the bolt head as they build up with crap 👍😁
They went to the trouble to make a damn mark imprinted in the sill to show where you jack it up, just get a puck for the jack and stands.
The safety squint cracked me up 🤣🤣👌
Just painted my v2 front end yesterday be fitting it all next week
Damaged repairable's are not the thing for those who are clueless! This sort of thing often ends up, with a "repaired" vehicle which is lethal, and might actually kill someone.
Because of a bolt that’s been changed?
If it passes an mot whats the issue?
@@itsleelockwood No. Because you clearly dont know what you are doing, and damage may be far more serious than damaged tinwork. The person you sell the van on to, has to face the consequences.
Try the quenching method works every time heat it up till its red hot pour cold water on it straight away
I mean you said there are not hotels and you want somewhere to sleep, if only you had a caravan on your driveway, mum will be cool with it!
U can prob just by consol part i think sub frame is 3 parts
Iv got a seat ibiza an it stripped front bolt pulled all threads i used a time sert to repair thread or a helicoil
Its a m14 bolt 1.5 pitch thread iv got a couple sparea
same thing happened to my golf gti and in the end i had to buy anew console bracket for 170 quid i couoldnt be fucked to drill out the bolt and tap it as you need it to be 100% straight so new part was less trouble hope you get it sorted
Can you access the top of the subframe where the thread is stuck? Can you just cut it off and drill through and nut and bolt that too?
Knew exactly what was going to happen before I even watched, I did exactly the same ended up just replacing the small pieces of the subframe each side got them off a scrapped mk5 golf as they were cheaper for some reason
Keep the fight lad. 👍 Done a good job of a not ideal situation there.
Exactly same bolt snapped on my sons caddy
the luck of lee strikes again lol, awesome video again cheers mate
great vids if you like rusted snaped bolts try owning a vw t4
Great job Lee 🙂👍
I would’ve just got a suitable nut, ran a die on the snapped thread and stuck a nut on it for now! Did me before for over year no probs.
VAG use A LOT of TTY bolts which basically mean they are stretch bolts which is why you get a torque setting and then additional degrees needed to stretch them so are only ONE TIME use bolts and if you don’t replace then expect them to snap so don’t cheap out! Including that big driveshaft hub bolt!!!!! Didn’t need the welder. I’ve had to replace that same bracket on my golf as some cheap fucker didn’t replace bolt so I had to replace the wishbone subframe bracket and bought all new genuine vw bolts! (Which aren’t cheap espesh after I poly bushed everything cost £££ to replace just the bolts!!) Trust me I’ve done loads of work on my VW in last 8/9yrs of having it and even loved it at one time…..now I hate it- such a bastard to work on 😂🤣💯
I never fit parts without greasing the bolts.never seize again.
Mate you have such bad luck it's unreal, i feel if i did any kind of spannering I'd 100% have the same kinda nightmares aha keep at it 🤟🏼
Take the battery terminals off the car when welding mate u can fry the ecu
They can be left at those auctions places for ages at a time, probably killed the battery.
i had same shit with a bolt on a caddy had to drill and tap
Weld an old spanner to the bolt
Christ Lee can you remove that lil nylon thing off your left glove. The lil clip that holds price tag on or keeps gloves together when new. My OCD goin nuts mate
judging by the first few mins of the vid... your wrestling training is going well lol. everyone is going to think your going into wrestling now, Lee the professional mattress wrestler. love it.
im not a welder but my brother is and he did teach me a little bit years ago. i believe with correct settings etc any welder would do a basic weld but a MIG would have been best, i think. problem is, if its a gas one the wind will blow away the gas so i think thats when gasless is better. i seem to remember my bro turning up the gas pressure to compensate for that.
one thing i do know for sure is if you look directly at the flash of a MIG welder (not sure on Arc) you can burn the surface of your eye/retina and it feels like your eye lid is sandpaper. really bad. auto masks/helmets are awesome but ive done safety squints and looking away many times. last thing id recommend is proper welding gloves, it hurts when a hot bit of metal burns through a normal glove or clothes but its your arms that are closest and most likely to be effected.
great job so far though despite been unlucky with the bolts, it happens and yeah the crash damage hadnt helped. keep at it mate
Tip - get yourself some proper penetrating fluid instead of regular wd40. Right tool for the right job. Wd40 actually make some in their 'specialist' range. Look for 'penetrant'
Great upload Lee, very entertaining 👍🏻
Hammer an e torx on the stud
Yes the caddy!!!!
Should change your channel name to Lee "The Bolt Snapper" Lockwood, swear it happens on every build 🤣
If you use the X5 to tow the mustang to a drift day, why not just sleep in the back of the X5? A lot more room than in the caddy, just cover the windows up
Ngl… I sponsor I never expected
Will you please please please get some fucking impact sockets to use on the gun🤣🤣🤣🤣. Will loosen bolts so much easier and quicker🤣
Hey Lee, when a bolt has snapped like that, I use a hack saw and saw a line in the bottom of it, then get a flat head screw driver and un-screw it like a screw. I did it when my old dog bone mount bolt snapped in my s3
Judging by how tight that was I doubt youd be able to get enough leverage to crack it loose but deffo worth a try init.
@@SteezyG yeah true, my dog bone mount bolt was pretty stuck and it didn’t really budge but after a while of hard twisting on the screw driver it become easier and easier
@@GreaseMonkeysGarage that could’ve worked too yeah
Might help on a bolt that hasn't had the surrounding metal hit in a collision and wedged the bolt in harder
@@waynelewis5656 Good point, still worth a try
@Lee Lockwood new subframe cmon lad return the blood clart welder and get a subframe and a foot long sub 😂😅😂
Which lab you use for your HGH 😉
Another Awesome Vlogs ever 👌
Remember trying to weld but didn’t use mask properly and woke up in night with my eyes on fire
This fella has nothing but bad news with his motors
Where’s the Land Rover content gone?
Morning lee
Hope battery was disconnected
Dint same shi* happen with 350z
Can we get more discovery and offroad content please
we don't go out too much in the summer to be honest, but im sure it'll start up again soon!
A snapped bolt can ruin a video, or make a video😂😂
Mate you need to buy yourself a proper impact gun! The mid torque Milwaukee 3/8 is a beast! And it’s compact enough for doin these tasks!
average 10 min job working on your car XD
sure it's a stud now not bolt lol
M10
Time for a sub frame me thinking
First 😂
