Taking in the Crotch on Jeans: A Professional's Process
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- In today's video, I demonstrate how I take in the crotch on a pair of jeans. This process is notoriously difficult. I hope that with my instructions today, I have helped facilitate this process for you! Please don't be afraid to comment on any questions you may have! Too often, we wear jeans that sag around the bum area and it's not too flattering! This process leaves the front just as before but the rear area is more tailored, yielding a flattering result!

It would be nice to see the before and after on an actual person so we can see the fit. Thank you for this video.
Yes... I would like to see how the garment fits on the customer/person
Yes I quite agree with this demand please madam
Another skillful alteration and enjoyable video watching the master reconstruction. 👏👏👏
Very cool! Is there a way to alter a pair of jeans from high/mid waist to a low waist? I know lower waisted pants are not 'in' right now but the high waist just does not look good on me and I find it really uncomfortable.
I find the tearing out of the threads, very satisfying for some reason, lol.
Yes. Very satisfying 🙂
I must agree! 😀
Same here - lol
If the customer didn’t believe you, you could show him the fabric you cut. This is so educational. Thank you for showing us how a professional does it. I learnt how to modify my jeans from one of your earlier videos.
Thanks so much for your kind words. I have to admit that I have mix feelings. When a customer doubts if I did the job I feel very accomplished because it means the job is well done, but in the other hand, I feel I'm accused of scamming. Then I laugh at myself for having so opposed feelings at the same time 🙂
@@DowntownTailoring You have mixed emotions because you are an honest, caring, professional.
This is exactly what I needed. I tried to adjust my dad's work pants & they came out ok but I definitely needed a better way. I'm going to try it this way next time.
Edit: finally used this method with some trousers for my mom. Me & my mom have short torsos & we constantly have this problem with having a sag in the front. But this worked great & didn't take long.
What do you do about jeans that fit really well, except the front zipper area “hangs”? The back fits well. They’re plus size and are made for larger tummy, which I don’t have.
This alteration is so well explain. Thank you. I had no idea this could be done!
Thank you so much! It's a bit of a hidden gem but the results are super flattering!
I am going to watch and rewatch and rewatch this video because I just bought some jeans that need this exact alteration. Thank you!!!
Ohhh wow I feel flattered, thank you and good luck!!
Thank you for this video! I've lost nearly 30 lbs and really didn't want to try to replace my favorite pants and jeans! Thanks to you, I've altered 3 pairs of dress pants and 2 pairs of jeans this weekend and my pants will fit better than they have in a while! You are wonderful! 🤗😊
Thanks so much! I'm so glad to hear 😍 Thanks for letting me know 💞💞💕
Brilliant! Love your work. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I’m glad you liked it! Thank you!!
As a girl who buys men's pants (I like having functional pockets) I constantly deal with too much crotch. This is a lifesaver! Thank you!
Would it be easier to put funtional pockets on the women's jeans instead?
Hello I’ve been trying to figure this out but I can’t find anything that helps me. The only issue is the front of the crotch on my jeans. The legs fit perfectly, the waist fits perfect, and the back fits perfect. The only problem is the front of the crotch and I don’t know how to fix it 😭 anyone have suggestions? It looks fine when I stand up but when I sit down or bend down the crotch juts out and looks horrible. These are amazing comfortable jeans too so I don’t want to get rid of them.
If your thighs stick out on a curvy way at the front you might have a very low front rise compared to the back. In this case you might need to scoop out some material from the front waist. I mean, you might need to lower your waistband at the front and dart the excess of material. Try to take an old jeans that fits well and compared both of them. It's a little complicated. I wish I could help a little more 😔
That was amazing! Such craftsmanship. Thank you.
Ouuu thank you so much!
Hi i had seen your videos before about making jeans bigger they were very useful. I was trying to take in crotch before watching your video but messed up and jeans became too tight so i had to add wide elastic on sides from top to bottom to make it flexible. The way you show how to undo stitches before taking in crotch in fact everything you teach is awesome and you make it look so easier but i still have other jeans so i certainly would follow your advice. Please keep making such useful videos. Many thanks .
So helpful! Thank you!! I have been trying to figure out how to do this for my kids’ pants. Can you show a video of how you fit it on the person to figure out how much and where to take in?
Yes! I'll work on this.
I wouldn't have the patience, but watching you and listening to you has lulled me into a pleasant state of being.
Yeah, same here. I love her voice. I would be a different person entirely if everyone spoke like she does.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I was able to fix baggy pants (not jeans) that I had just ordered (size 4P, and I still had to take in over two inches!). I was a little off at the central part of the crotch, somehow I didn’t quite line up the front and back properly, but nobody can see that. My pants now fit just right. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Aweeee! 🥺 Thanks so much. This comment makes me so glad! Sometimes I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself correctly. Cheers 🥰🥰🥰
MA cuisine: If you use a small strip of wonder tape on either the front or back crotch seam, then can line up opposite crotvh seam and the seams will hold together perfectly lined up, while you sew, no pins needed in the crotch seams.. (Wonder tape has 2 sticky sides, and will wash away. Great stuff, so useful. Excuse me please, if you already know about Wonder Tape I too must alter down several inches on my clothes. I wear 00, (but not a petite) and hard to find anything that fits.
Thank you I do alterations but I have never opened up and adjusted a flat felled seam on jeans - I thought it couldn't really be done. Thank you for this.
I'm glad to help. Thanks 🥰
You are a blessing! Loving to see these alteration videos, makes it much easier for us non professional to know the simplest way to go about doing these more time consuming alterations :) Loving all the videos :)
Thank you so much for your kind words!!!
Amazing talent and able to turn it into a business, because your work is so perfect.
I’ve ordered so many pants sewing patterns from professional designers and didn’t solve my baggy pants problem. Thank you so very much!
That's really nice to hear! You can watch this video for more info about the crotch. Crotch is the last trick!

Thank you so much. I always like your simple explanation. May God continue to bless you and your channel..I learn so much from you.
You are always so nice, thank you!!!
Thank you so much for this explanation!
This is so informative! As a person who’s just starting to learn(and has a pair of really baggy jeans to alter) this video is amazing! Just a small question, do we only take in the fabric from the back? What if it’s really baggy both in the front and back? Can this same technique be applied to the front as well?
Yes. But the problem with the front usually is the zipper. And the curve underneath the zipper is almost always of a standard size of about 2". Reducing it, might damage the pants. Anyways, you can reduce the front leg without problem, the front crotch, not so much. I hope this helps.
@@DowntownTailoring Yes, because I need the crotch length but upper thigh area and area under but in back too big. And on jeans with sretch, smetimes they have been sewn leaving a pleat down one of legs. I think they stretched too much on the fabric? Great instructions for this video so good of you to share talent.
Thank you! I may have to try on thrift store jeans first, but now I hope I can save my daughter's jeans and make them look nice and be comfortable!
I am actually going to make a video on altering thrift store jeans soon! Stay tuned :))
It. Takes a lot of patience I'll pray you can hang in there it's called custom fit I use to do this now retired when it gets on your nerves walk away
That was absolutely amazing! You really nailed that & it looks like you have been altering clothes for a very long time as you are indeed so good at it as jeans are very difficult to alter. Cheers 😊❤️🥰😍💕😘
Thank you! 🥰🥰🥰
Ugh, yeah I think I'm just gonna return the pants and start over again! sigh 😞
But YOU'RE AWESOME AND DID AN AMAZING JOB!! I WISH I HAD YOUR TALENT!! 💗
I just made myself a pair of pants with a too low crotch, thank you for the tutorial now I'll be able to make them fit nicely
🥰🥰🥰
don't you just love it when they accuse you of not doing any work before they try things on?
Yes! 😉
I wish we could have seen the pants on the customer before and after. This is a great tutorial though, thank you!
thank you! You saved me from yelling at my hubby while trying to hem his work pants 😆
Marriage counselor 😁😁😁
You're a wizard as far as I'm concerned, sewing is something that has always frustrated me since I'm so bad at it. That's amazing :)
Thanks so much 🥰 I was very, very bad at sewing when I started 😁
How much would you charge for this alterations? Loved your videos¡ 👌🏾
I love your methods! I've altered jeans before and they held up, but with your instructions they look more professionally altered! thank you thank you!
Thank you very much 😊
Do you need a special machine to see these jeans? Also a before, and after on a live person, or even a manikin would be most interesting
Hi! You don't really need a special machine for this job.
I try to present the results, but not all my customers have modeling inclinations 😁 I'll make a greater effort next time 😉. Cheers
Thank you that was so helpful, I'd never in a million years have thought of doing it this way! It would have been nice to have seen the jeans on the person before and after, but I guess if they're paying customers, they might not want to :)
Yes! Not all the customers feel comfortable modeling 😁
Very hard to follow. I really needed to see the crotch alteration as my client legs fit just fine. He has a flat butt and I am still not sure how to just alter the butt area.
I'll have to make a video showing how to pin this.
Just imagine how much we could save if we all could use some basic math and a needle 🪡 and thread 🧵 So interesting.
I’m soooo confused 🤷♀️
this is sooo satisfying to watch... alterations are so fascinating!
what do i do if i want to take some inches of the crotch area but not from the leg?
In that case you probably need to scoop out material from the waist. 🙂
Very helpful. thanks very much God bless you
Just what I have been looking for. Cleaners and seamstresses in my area need to hire you to hold classes where you teach them how to do this. Had 3 tell me couldn't be done.
Your customer is going to think this alteration was simple, since jeans look the same as before. Customer will think price should be cheap. Haha And they will be so wrong. I will attempt this on my own pants, but no one could afford my alteration price for this job. Thank you for this awesome helpful tutorial. I would add, on the first pair I try this on since I am notnot a professonal, I am going to only baste seam together until I try pants on. Just incase I have taken in too much or too little.
Thanks so much for your comment. It is SO true! I didn't see it before from this point of view but it's so certain. Producing a job that is virtually invisible is more difficult, yet the customer will think otherwise 🤯🤯🤯🤯 Thanks to much for opening my eyes with your comment. 💞💞💕
Clear & simple, this is what I need. I get wrinkle/crumpled everytime I reach the crotch. What's the secret of not to bootle neck? Thanks
Hiya, love this video - very useful!. Just wondering if it would work if I took it in the front instead?
Excellent!!! Love your skills and the way you explained them, learning to tailor, 👌😍
I love how well your chalk marks show up on the clothes. Which supplier do you buy it from and what is the name exactly? My chalk is too much on the waxy side and doesn't show up as nice. I used to have some great stuff, but I think the manufacturer changed their recipe.
Thank you so much! I took two sewing courses in college and didn't learn this!
I really enjoy your videos ⭐ thank you
Thank you so much!! 🥰
Great!! How much would be max. shortened lenght? Thanks🙋♀️
What a GREAT video! Informative and entertaining! The ASMR sounds of the stitches and sewing machine were cool as well! Thank you!
Thank you SO much for your video! I had to sort out my son’s school trousers and this has saved me so much time and money!
I'm missing the beginning. How you found those 2 points in the beginning. Without that I can't follow the following steps.
Excellent. Thank you!
i don’t even want to attempt this i just wanna know where your shop is so YOU can fix my jeans for me 😭😅
Hey I’m working on alter a big pair of pants but I wanna keep them high waisted, would this make my waist lower if I took in the crotch?
You're my favourite seamstress 😁 thank you for helping me sew my jeans.
It would've b3en nice to see on a model how we'd know if we need to take ours in. Ty for sharing.
I just love you!!!! Thank you for sharing 🥰🥰🥰
Just curious, why do some people take in the crotch on the double when some people rip apart the whole seam and take in the back pannel of the pants?
Is it because you are making the flat fell stitch and aligning the one seam at the edge? So the 1.5 is part of the flat fell stitch?
Your funny and professional
Thanks so much for your kind words!
Perfect
I kinda dont get it what is the measurment on the pin? I mean how do you measure the leg side? I got so confused
What kind of thread, needle, stitch, and tension? I get baffled by all this.
Would love to how you knew how much it needed to go up and where the markings came from
Thank you so much you are amazing!!!
Thank you for your support Evelyn!!
@@DowntownTailoring I was so happy to get this instruction video Please keep making them, I know your channel will take off, I will continue to share on Facebook and Pinterest and comment. I hope everyone else will to help support your channel so you can keep making videos. You make it look so easy I love alterations but I am not knowledgeable enough to do them. With your instructions, I think I can do it.
Awwww thank you so much for helping us and believing in us. You are greatly appreciated! I'm so glad to help out! :))
This is so well explained! I was looking for a good way to alter my jeans, because I like baggy legs but the problem is the the crotch. I will be trying to alter my trousers in the future, thank you!
oh mans... youre so cute... just look how adorable and cute you are
Is there anyway in shortening the crotch and giving the pants a but more length?
These are such helpful videos thank you!
Love your video! Just to clarify - are you removing fabric only from the back pieces and keeping the front pieces as they are? Is that why you're stitching in the original stitch line for the front and the back pieces have the excess? Thanks!
Yes! You got it. Most of the time, removing fabric from the front spoil the fit. Cheers 🙂
I need to remove from both. More in the back though. Men's jeans just aren't made to sit at the hips.
Hello I'm wondering if you have any tips for taking in pants that have a gusset crotch? My hubs buys heavy carpenter jeans with a gusset crotch. The waist fits but legs and butt area wayyy too big! Any help is appreciated!
Hi! Try to make the gusset more skinny. You can pin a dart on it and make him try it on to see if this helps. Cheers ☺️
You are the goddess of alterations 💜💜💜
Did you remove on the back part?
THIS WAS SO HELPFUL and easy to follow. thank you!
Thanks 😊
A true demo of pro tailoring.Helpful to many. Thank you.
Thanks 🥰
Fingers are very important with eating too.
I would appreciate it if you could explain how elegant pants are widened in the crotch by adding two triangular fabrics.
Yes! I'm going to make a video about it. Stay tuned 😊
Great work! Would it be possible to get to know, how much a client approximatley would be paying for such alterations?
Hi! About 35 for fixing the crotch. Cheers 😊
Thank you for your wonderful explanation.
Thank you for your kind words, as always! :)
Sửa đẹp quá, like
Definitely loving this tutorial !!! Thank you 🎉
Awesome! Thank you! 😊
Beautiful!!!!! Gracias!
Muchas gracias!!! 🥰
You are amazing! I follow you even thought I am professional like you! Never ending learn in this industry
Thanks so much! Comming from you, your comment means a lot 🥰🥰🥰
Great explanation... now I’ll listen 28 more times as I try to follow along step by step. I’m 6’ tall with a 36” inseam and a size 11... so I never find pants that fit correctly. Always end up with men’s jeans with the men’s crotch. Either that or I pay $300 for jeans. Gonna try this on my $7 thrift find and see how closely I can follow along.
I just don't know how youre getting your jeans under the foot. My fabric is too thick to fit let alone sew through. I've broken so many needles
Hi! There’s a kind of screw on the very top of your machine that can help to reduce the pressure of your foot allowing you to accommodate thicker fabric. I’m going to make a short about it.
This is SO HELPFUL thank you! Ive seen other videps describing how to remove excess fabric from the rise but not how to do it with a flat felled seam. Thank you!!
OK. I'm just going to say it. No matter what you charge for jeans alterations, it is NOT NOT NOT enough.
You are quite right ✅
I didn't get as technical as you down inseam but worked out great Thank you so much! 👍
Great to hear! 🥰
Thank you for sharing a brilliant video x
I'm glad you liked it!!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU 😭😭💖 now I feel more confident in altering my jeans
Thank you for a great video! Now I'm going to make an attempt to sew in my BDU-pants that are to wide around the thighs. Is it possible to just make the leg parts tighter without altering the vertical seam in the butt? I don't need the crotch to be shorter, just the thighs narrower. Peace from Sweden!
Where are you located? I have a small waist and it is hard to find jeans I like that are low rise. I have a few jeans I bought on-line that could use this!
I'm in Ontario!
You make everything look so easy!!! I’m gonna try on ‘junk jeans ‘ first
Thanks for the great tutorial !!!!
🥰🥰🥰
Ótimo vídeo parabéns
Thank you for sharng your skills. I was able to follow along except I'm not sure how much seam you cut off to make the flat felt seam. Did you leave 1/2 inch larger seam allowance to turn over the seam to make the flat felt seam?????
Ohhh! I have so much more to learn from you! New subscriber!
Thanks 🥰 Welcome to our community!
How much should this be ?
