- I got a few questions about how to shorten the rise on ready to wear pants. So I decided to do an updated video. Join me to see how to figure out how much excess length you need to get rid of. Plus, I'll show you a creative option for shortening the rise at the top of the pants by taking off the waistband and adding a fabric binding finish.

I’m petite, but wear a women’s cut, not juniors, and I can’t seem to find pants that fit. I think your strategy of removing the waistband and taking in the sides will help. Excited to try!

Thank you. Your other video really helped on this adjustment a lot. I had to take up almost 3". With that much adjustment, I could have given them away, but I wanted to see if I could. lol. This gives me another avenue for adjusting.

I will definitely be shortening the rise of my blue jeans by taking off the waistband. However, I would like to sew the waistband back on with the belt loops. So my question is, shall I just cut the inch and a half that I need to lower the rise through the zipper and then reattach the waistband? Can I reattach the waist band with a serger? I would love for you to demonstrate how to reattach the entire waistband on jeans :)

I used the Part 1 instructions to shorten the rise on stretch jeans I made with some success -- still tweaking. I had cut a second pair using the same pattern but have not sewn them and want to adjust the rise first. I need to adjust 1" - 1 1/2" and like the easy no-waist band technique but wonder if I should apply the first technique for a better fit? I'm not alone in struggling with pants fitting and appreciate your helpful videos. Susan
You can try that... or you can let the fabric tell you what it needs... Have you checked out my Trouble Shooting Pants Fitting Series. It shows how to pick a size, prepare the pattern, cut a single leg muslin and sew it together. This sets you up to work with a single leg muslin and a separate waistband. By fitting the waistband where you want it to sit and then draping the fabric from it makes quicker work of balancing the front/back leg. In my process of fitting pants I start by customizing the pattern pieces with body specific adjustments to make the pieces agree with your shape before fitting... that also makes fitting easier. Yes and I bought your non-stretch fitting waist band and TDCO has been helpful. The jean pattern I'm working with was tissue fit to me during a one-day workshop and I didn't anticipate the rise fitting issue and cut out the 2nd pair -- oops. Since it's a stretch jean there's lots to consider and I'd like to sew them up to a wearable, comfortable state then move on to a new muslin. I plan to adjust the 1st pair I made then adjust the 2nd pair before sewing. Since sewing, I realize I need to blend between two sizes which explains why a curvy smaller size from ready to wear fits me best. Susan
That sounds like a great plan! (I always leave an inch above the waist and sides seams when I cut out a new pair... just in case!)..

Thank you for this excellent video. You are so knowledgeable and have a really lovely voice. I have a pair of pants with a side zipper. The zipper is part of the waistband. If I turn the waistband over to half its width that would be perfect. I'm wondering if I could remove the zipper completely and insert a stretchy fabric or wide elastic in an inverted triangle position to add a little extra comfort around the waist. Do you think this would work? BTW, I DON'T tuck in my blouses. I look forward o hearing from you.

Altering the front rise at the crotch seems a good idea. Surely taking off the waistband shortens the back and front rise, which wouldn’t be any good for me. I shall certainly try shortening the front rise by unpicking the crotch. Thank you

Thank you! Your instructions are so clear.I just finished a wearable muslin and need to take off about 2 inches on the front crotch. Would it work to remove the waist band and create a casing for elastic? The pants have very wide legs.
Hi Susan, If it's the position of the front crotch curve being too low.. You can take apart the inseam and shorten the front crotch from the crotch point.... especially if you have enough ease in the upper thigh to trim some off the inseam as well. Let me know if this makes sense to you. Thanks Jen

I just stumbled on your channel and am SO GLAD I did - your tips are so helpful! One question on this, by taking the waistband off you’re lowering the back rise as well as the front. The issue I usually have is too much length in the front but the back is usually okay, or too long by a lesser amount. Any suggestions for that scenario? Thanks so much!

You can follow this tutorial, but use the facing to finish the raw edge. Then Understitch through the edge of the facing and seam allowances (about 1/8" away from the seam) Then press the facing to the inside. To secure it, you can either sew along the bottom edge of the facing if the style pants agree with a line of stitching there. Or you can stitch down along the side seams & CB seam to hold it down. That's a great question. If you're shortening the length at the crotch points, you can take length from both the front and back to keep the inseam from coming too far forward! Thanks for fitting along with me
What needle is that, you're using? Can you purchase it or did it come with your machine?
I'm sorry, I can't remember what needle I was using in this video... but in all my videos I'm using Schmetz or Organ needles that you can purchase at any sewing shop. I always try to get away with a universal needle. If I get skipped stitches or frayed threads, I'll switch to the specialty needle designed for what I'm sewing. Also, I change my needle every time I start a new project! I hope this helps, thanks for following along with me
Can you please show how to lower the rise for drawstring linen pants? I want to buy some cheap Zara summer pants, but the rise on all their pants is always way too long that I would have to roll the waistband down a couple of times which obviously ruins the look and feel of the linen.... Can the inside crotch of the pants just be redone or does the whole waist need to be removed and slid down?... Thanks!!!

I’ve got some pants I really love ( sweat shirt like ) my sister bought for me when I broke my ankle ! I don’t the bell like bottoms, I don’t know how to fix I’ve looked & beat myself! The side seams are on the outside of pants there’s no way ( I know of to alter ) without tearing the pants apart & starting from scratch ! Do you understand what I’m trying to say I don’t know how to send you a picture ?

I am looking to shorten the back rise (if thats what it's called, I'm very new to this!), since my suit pants have a baggy look around the butt. It's as if the back of the pants sag below where the front and back seam meet, creating way too much space. Would you recommend doing what you show in the video, but taking length from the back of the pants instead?
I reply to everyone's comments :))) I think you can use this tutorial showing how to shorten the front rise... To shorten the back rise. Take apart the inseam through the crotch... then pin out some of the back crotch length (like a show how to pin out some of the front crotch length in this tutorial. What if it's more than 3/4"?? I am a 10.5" front rise and no pants off the shelf are this short. Most are 12 or 14 inch rises! How do I shorten to 10.5 or at best 11" ???
That's a tough one... If there's extra ease along your inseam/upper thigh, you can split up the total amount you need to remove between trimming it off the waistline and shortening the crotch extensions... I have been trying to shorten the front rise of a pair of ready to wear pants. I did the front pinch however when took the crotch apart the back is much longer than front. What do I do?
Try shortening the back inseam a little bit... then take out the inseam all the way down to the knee and ease the longer inseam into the shorter one. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching
Shortening rtw wear pants from regular size to petite size - do you do exactly the same thing as you've shown (waistband intact) and do you need to do anything else to accommodate a flat backside?
If you'd like to take the waistband off, you can "petite" your pants this way. Or you can take the waistband off, shorten the zipper and trim some of the rise off and then put the waistband back on (depending on the front pocket and other details). Why was the adjustment made only on the front? Couldn't you have taken 3/8 from front and back ?
In this example I took the entire waistband off to lower the front and back. You can trim off additional fabric front and back if you need to as well. Thanks so much for watching!
Can you sew the waistband back on after you cut the excess? My pants are so high waisted, I have enough room to take them off and put back on without affecting the back pockets, luckily there are no front pockets

How do you know how far to open the seam into each leg? I just got a pair of jeans that fit perfectly, legs, butt and all, except there’s a fold at the bottom of the zipper. I don’t think taking in the legs would be beneficial.
If you decide to shorten the rise at the crotch, the only way to do it is to trim off some of the crotch points... and blend back to the original inseam. The good news is that you can test this without cutting anything off... try sewing across the crotch the amount you need to shorten it.. and blend back to the original seam as soon as you can (while creating a smooth transition, no sudden turns in toward the inseam or you'll create a weird wrinkle) If it fits better, then you can trim off the excess fabric. You other option is to pick up the excess at the waist... Good News, that is going to be the topic of this week's Fit Tip Tuesday!

If you don't have a front pocket that will be affected, yes. But you can also take some length out at the base of the crotch seam. How to extend my waist from 38 to 50 size
To add 12" to a waistline, you can create to triangle shaped pieces that add 6 inches to each side. (basically they would be upsidedown godets that taper to 0... inserted into the side seams.) The trick is to find a fabric that matches the fabric that the pants are made from. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching
Why not just use a single edge razor? So much faster and much more precise.
I have a friend who swears by them... but I'm a little bit worried I'd cut myself (I've been in the ER for rotary cutter accidents and such...) But, if that's the tool of choice, I say go for it (and be careful!)
