- Great steel guitar playing by Bill Johnson, great song from Buddy Mize and the usual great performance by Marty. This went to number 3 in the Country charts and stayed in the chart for 18 weeks.
Let's be honest. Marty had one of the best bands throughout the 50's, 60's and 70's. I am a die hard Bill Martinez fan.
I don't get tired of listening to this one. I think Marty had one of the best singing voices ever to come out of country music, up there with Ray Price and Jim Reeves. The pedal steel playing by Bill Johnson is superb. Great, real, country music.
Marty has a voice smooth as butter. This song and Don't worry about me are my two favorites
Love this song. My dad told me it was the number one country song when I was born (March 28, 1961) So, my parents named me Marty after Marty Robbins. Needless to say, I to became a singer and musician. Kind of ironic I know. Funny thing is, my dads name is Ronnie, which is the name of Marty's son of course. I always loved the steel work in this song, very good! I learned to play the steel also, but not near that good! This was true country music! RIP Marty Robbins. We truely miss you!
Hey Vending Guy! You are exactly one year younger than I am (b. 3/28/60). I'm a musician, too, and also play some PSG, in addition to a lot of other instruments. Love Marty, and always have.
Marty is not only one of the top country singers HE IS ONE OF THE TOP 3 OR 4 TOP VOICES PERIOD
Marty is a legend. He surrounded himself with serious musicians and his live performances as well as countless, shining studio achievements are a pleasure to behold. Bill Johnson is nothing short of astounding . I heard this song the other day and wanted to find out the name of the steel player and actually witness the execution of those incredible licks! Your posting made that possible. I am in your debt!
My (now late) mother took me to see Marty in 1966. All I gave a rip about was "Oh Lord, please let them play The Shoe goes on the other Foot tonight". They did! About the 3rd or 4th song. I was in Heaven!!! Maybe I'll have some talent like that in my studio one day.

I really enjoyed doing these TV shows with Marty...Great singer, and showman, and writer...Great band there too. We all miss Marty, he was a true friend...
How were you involved, in the band?
Just keep finding other songs by Marty ,,just wonderful
I love the way he had to move his head to get the right note. I love all his songs
You got to love this man's music. So down to earth and full of truth. But to only to them people who really listen to the real meaning of love and life.☺
I love how it looks like Marty's having a ball and not afraid to show it. Awesome steel work. Love the bubbly piano fills at the head of the second verse
love all your clips of marty. i had never seen him perform, not live, not even on
t.v. i loved his voice for years but that is all i knew, just that beautiful smooth
voice !!!! thank you Tarquin.
really love this song from the greatest singer of all time
Thank You for sharing !
I love to hear him singing such a song, since he REALLY had one of the most faithful and happy marriages of any man I've known of. With all the women he could have had, he so loved his wife. What a lucky woman she was!!
Thank you
🙏🤗🍺cheers
Love this song!!
Brilliant 👏
Great Steel work by Bill Johnson. Marty also does this one in his 1966 movie 'Hell On Wheels'.
♥♥ Amazing song, that's lovely ♥♥
Another one of my all time favourites by Marty.
That was great!

It's from 'The Best Of The Marty Robbins TV Show' 1968/69.
Textbook to country bands on how to play "out of the way". Lead guitar just playing on the bass lines and piano player only playing fills off the singers voice. Great. Makes the singer happy and then everybody's happy.
It makes my day when someone as noted as yourself comments Henry. Thank you for taking the trouble to do so.
Marty was always a pedal steel guitar guy. He arguably had the two greatest pedal steel players in Bill Johnson and Katz Kobayashi. Maybe living in Hawaii is where he loved the pedal steel guitar.
Groovy! I'd only heard the Loretta Lynn version. This is great.
Bill Johnson playing that Emmons. The band playing behind Marty not on top of him. And Marty thanked them for it. That Emmons was in Europe the last I checked.
This writing wit has left this Earth for a Heavenly place at God's garden. Little sweet Shannon Burns left us, going on 3 years ago now. God I miss her like my next breath. May you rest in Heaven my Bear. Your Denny.
thanks for your response... Rob.
Bill Johnson, the steel guitar player, has passed away. His funeral is today in Camp Hill, Alabama.
wow ... lead guitar player humpin' the bass lines .. jus too cool ..
Great !!!
It tells you on the info, its the great Bill Johnson
Is this clip from a t.v. show that Marty hosted?
Who is that on the pedal steel?
Jethro Jackson, Bill Johnson. Marty's longtime pedaller. That Emmons he is playing, Shannon Burns above said is in Europe now. I would not doubt her, she is a steel guitar loving gal. And her research is impeccable, her knowledge of country music amazes me. And she stands by classic country and western music and her convictions.
When I think about all the rubbish preached and recommended about this device and that one between the pedal steel and the amp, I listen to this and would announce to all, in the terms of Marty: "That was great!" because they were great and did not need a bunch of electronic tripe to get it right.. The balance was perfect, a perfect example; there are no short-cuts. They were musicians, not electronic magicians. Take note of what is close to perfection.
Jack Pruitt on guitar
Who's on drums? Bill Martinez and Keith Moon are my two favorite drummers of all time. They are an orchestra of their own,
