So glad many of us got to hear Phil sing those words and strum that bass in 95. I heard it many times as a studio recording for years, before, as the opening to a weekly Dead show at a radio station in NY. I always wondered why the boys never played it live. Then they did. While that first performance, in Philly was not their greatest, it was still magical. And it led to more comprehensive versions that we have heard, till Phil's passing.
It's hard to place Dead songs into a " top 10 or 20 or even 30"- list. That being said, this is w out a doubt, the absolute best song the Dead ever made ❤
No words to explain how i feel listening to that Dead's song. God bless you guys. Been listening to it so much times. In the 70's round 75 when i first listened to it, i fell in love with that tune. Thanks for that great post reviving GD soul.
There are some ridiculously nuts time signatures in this tune. And there are like 9 of them. I rally like this way different version too. Already miss ya Phil.
Very great musician and bassist. These recent months i had been listening to that tune which reminds me of my youth early 70's. Of course that period was glorious. REST IN PEACE SIR.
Phil, we've loved you more than words can tell💔🎶 GRATEFUL for EVERYTHING you and the band brought us... float like a feather now, and ENJOY your time with Jerry🤍🌠🪶✨ Rest in Peace
I've listened/watched this more than a few times in the past 5-6 years and I still find it superb. This is a wonderful arrangement of Phil's song. Great musicianship. Joe Russo is an amazingly sensitive trapsman. Phil is presently 81, if I remember rightly, and I'm sure his bass playing has not suffered. Bobby is still doing what Bob does best. John Kalecik is an incredible guitar player. Jeff, as ever, is more than competent.
Meh on the keyboard... too outside for such a sweet song. I feel like Rob was better for this jam, he brought more of that sweetness. But Phil seems to really enjoy playing this version here, so who am I to say otherwise. The transitions from the unison section to the walk down chords has a higher floor but lower ceiling in this version. I'll usually prefer a lower floor, but with the potential for a higher ceiling, if that makes sense?
Way back when tappers were using audio cassettes, we bought albums/records and this was on FROM THE MARS HOTEL which was the type of record you'd play over and over and over again. So glad Furthur is playing Unbroken Chain and Phil is singing...Phil is the bomb at 71!...well, almost 71!
Blue light rain Whoa, unbroken chain Looking for familiar faces In an empty window pane Listening for the secret Searching for the sound But I could only hear the preacher And the baying of his hounds Willow sky Whoa, I walk and wonder why They say love your brother But you will catch it when you try Roll you down the line boy Drop you for a loss Ride you out on a cold railroad And nail you to a cross November and more As I wait for the score They're telling me forgiveness Is the key to every door A slow winder day A night like forever Sink like a stone Float like a feather Lilac rain, unbroken chain Song of the saw-whet owl Out on the mountain, it'll drive you insane Listening to the winds howl Unbroken chain of sorrow and pearls Unbroken chain of sky and sea Unbroken chain of the western wind Unbroken chain of you and me
Saw Phil do this with the Dead 2X in Philadelphia and East Rutherford in 1995. One of the best and favorite songs ever. Saw Furthur do it in Wantagh in 2011 with my youngest son. Have audio of it on phone. Phil and Friends set list for Central Park on 5/28/2014 contains it. Always pleasure to hear.
"Dziadki", a wciąż grają najlepiej. Inni powinni chodzić na kursy, aby nauczyć się jak komponować i grać. Ten utwór jest wspaniały - jeden z najlepszych jakie stworzyła muzyka rockowa. Mogę go słuchać dosłownie na okrągło.
I’m so lucky to have seen the original GD (minus Pigpen). The first time I heard unbroken chain I was tripping on the Bay Bridge. I’ll never forget it. I’m consoled knowing Jerry and Pig are waiting for Phil now ❤😊
It was a very exciting night, listening to Furthur live from TRI studios, on my laptop, poolside...while I was out in California, just amazing quality webcast, Live on the internet and of course this beautiful song Unbroken Chain of the Grateful Dead.. love the way Furthur sounds in the studio thanks for posting this onYT o-o
"Un broken chain " 6/7/2011 this song being played in the studio,I watched everyone rehearsin, this song u guys did a well put together job!it rocked to me! thank-u!
caught phil w/ jill coming outta the Independent after just melting our faces late in the morning, nobody could speak. i screamed, “we f ing love you, Phil”. Phil blew me a kiss ❤
@@MyCleverHandle because you have a big heart and soul and were touched by what they did all those years. No other band affected their fans like they did.
Really nice! Musician friends if you read this: Notice how each player complements the others and the song as a whole. @pairdoc, Thanks for posting this!
Still gives me chills. RIP Phil. You found the sound.
ME 2 😥
i love that.

This is your legacy. Songs for eternity. RIP Phil
Listened for the secret, Searched for the sound, and found The Grateful Dead. God Bless You and Thank You
Love you Phil. We’re going to miss the hell out of you buddy, forever grateful for everything you’ve given us.
A great version of Phil's magnus opus. Fare thee well old friend. So glad to have seen you so many times in this lifetime!
"Unbroken Chain" is a really special song, and this is a great version of it.

RIP Phil. This tells me what the Dead might have been if they had a piano player like this from the start.
Phil, we've loved you more than words can tell💔🎶
GRATEFUL for EVERYTHING you and the band brought us... float like a feather now, and ENJOY your time

Rip legend
This song reaches my soul in a time when we really need music. God speed this pandemic

Phil's voice is at my personal favorite stage here -- nicely burnished, mature, beautiful. A phenomenal song, one of a kind.
Thank you Phil and Bob for passing the 🔥 along...
So good! Fare Thee Well Phil!
Absolute Wow!!! RIP Mr. Phil Zone .☮️
I love The Jeff Chimenti Band.
There it is
Robert Peterson wrote the lyrics to this incredible song. He wrote Pride of Cucamonga as well as Revolutionary Hamstrung Blues and New Potato Caboose.
That keyboard and lead guitar REALLY do this song justice. A good well-rehearsed extended, and coherent effort. Great job.

Bringing new life to this masterpiece of Phil, done his tops on this here. Woah!
one of the most beautiful & moving grateful dead songs for me,
So I think I now understand the concept of "heavy air".
Thanks, Phil!!
This is absolutely unreal !! The players, here in this lineup, are placed perfectly for a very special harmonious blend of music.
bless your creative beyond belief soul...
this is the tune i want played when i too pass thru the veil💖
What a great version of this great song. Thanks for Posting.
Absolute killer version of my favorite song of all time!
Downright crafty! Best version I have ever heard
Ever since I First Listened to The Grateful Dead and The Dead and Lesh and Firends, I Have been stuck in the PHILZONE!
This is a great song..beautiful melody..reaches right to your heart❤
Blue light rain
Whoa, unbroken chain
Looking for familiar faces
In an empty window pane
Listening for the secret
Searching for the sound
But I could only hear the preacher
And the baying of his hounds
Willow sky
Whoa, I walk and wonder why
They say love your brother
But you will catch it when you try
Roll you down the line boy
Drop you for a loss
Ride you out on a cold railroad
And nail you to a cross
November and more
As I wait for the score
They're telling me forgiveness
Is the key to every door
A slow winder day
A night like forever
Sink like a stone
Float like a feather
Lilac rain, unbroken chain
Song of the saw-whet owl
Out on the mountain, it'll drive you insane
Listening to the winds howl
Unbroken chain of sorrow and pearls
Unbroken chain of sky and sea
Unbroken chain of the western wind
Unbroken chain of you and me
5:06... that entrance... damn, shivers...
John’s guitar near the end has the Jerome tone. It shows how much tone and timbre add to the appeal.
Sink like a stone flooooat like a feather!! Phil's vocals on this were so sweet

thank God for UA-cam!
Somehow, I don't think "God" had anything to do with UA-cam...
Best post-Garcia band ever.
I think they got beat sir.

I wouldn't mind if it was Rob on keys, instead, and either JK or Kimock would do on guitar. I'm not sure if there was an incarnation I didn't like....
I can't believe I found this. I'm so happy. Thank you phil. Love you.❤ My heart soars!
Matt the drums are just sensational. They're so essential to this song too❤
Trainwreck at about 10m18s and Phil laughs. 😂
Phil sure does age like a fine wine!
Loving that sweet T.R.I. sound:) tear it up jazzy Jeff

Phil pushing the voice works so well here. Kind of beautifully weary
Thanks Phil

Love the look between Phil and Joe at the beginning of the breakdown.
What a version
Such a magnificent song.
fantastic rendition of my current favorite Dead song. thank you for posting they are a great group of super talented- the best!
Why does it seem that every Grateful Dead tune played without Jerry is a tribute to him? And why do I still cry all these years later?
They are , and he enjoys every moment.
