Ive silkscreened for 15 years. Owned two shops and have always either had someone else to handle the Illustrator end of things..or created every bit of artwork with a copy machine and a light table. Ive finally buckled down and decided to learn the best program on the market..and its a nightmare. I feel like Im simply too old and conformed to my cut and paste ways! But Ive subscribed to your channel and hopefully I can learn some things. Thank you for devoting the time and energy to this!

tons of courses out there that are cheap. i know its abeen a year.
i got burnt out sitting all day doing photoshop for some company (soccer) and do not plan to do that anymore. i miss some of my coworkers but they all come and go. its sad. being a worker bee is sad.
now i'm looking into the medical field but that is the same situation of course. worker bee in a hospital.
i paint landscapes but not enough to make a living. i am way to mentally scrambled to be self employed. it sucks.
sorry to blab, just talking out loud.

What have been better is if you gave links to both the file you used AND the shirt template so people can follow along.

You created an underlay for black, how do you remove the underlay for dark colors that do not need it?

    • @robkimmel9431

You probably have figured this out since your comment is pretty old but I noticed that as well. You can take the information from the black or dark colored screens and make it all a compound path. Then paste it in place on top of the underbase screen. Use the pathfinder to minus front and it will knock the dark information out of the underbase. Both things have to be made into compound shapes first before using minus front or your artwork could get all messed up.

Heres the issue..When we get to the segment where we would take the artwork and crosshairs and move them to the artboard for seperation, I cant select the artwork anymore. Its one big unit. Also, how do I select the individual colors to move over to create the different films? I tried clicking on my saved spot colors, layers(which I had only one, the entire piece) I must have missed some steps...to say the least haha!

how do I select the individual colors to move over to create the different films?
-you should select one shape of the color u want to move to another layer or art board ,
-then while u are selecting that one shape .. go to ( select ) menu .. choose ( same ) .. then ( fill color )
      - you will have that color been selected with all its shapes .

THANKS FOR THE TUTORIAL IDOL... but what Nielsen saying about separation in postscript file?

  • @lancemccord7431

So, I bring my art in, I do EXACTLY what you did, step by step, for the underbase. When I push "Unite", the box around my art fills in solid instead of my art uniting.

Lance, you may have a mask in your artwork. Right click on the area where the box is box is appearing and see if you have the option to release mask. Choose that option and delete the surrounding box. Another issue may be "hidden artwork". This can occur when opening a file saved from another version of illustrator. Simply go to "outline" mode under the view menu, and you will see all vector art outlines.

McLogan Supply Co. That worked. Thank you so much. We are trying to do everything in-house and this has been most helpful.

Instead of making the color solid why not do a fade from the black?

AcuRip can be used with Adobe programs and CorelDRAW.

dude you don't need that many artboards though. just create your separation in postscript file

Thank you for your comment. However, we are trying to demonstrate a way of separation to people who have little to no knowledge of AI.

I can't get illustrator to recognize any of the objects in my image

    • @McLoganSupplyCo
      @McLoganSupplyCo  7 років тому

Are you trying to work off of a photo? i.e .jpeg, .png, .tiff, .giff file? If so you will have to vectorize the image first using the image trace button near the top of the screen. If you select your image and it shows this option then you are working off a photo and not a vector.
