The ending to that episode destroys me every time... the reason why Chronikos aunt only harbours hate for Chroniko at the time was because after her accident and husband dying she sold all her good memories of them to keep them afloat... when she sat down to play the piano they all came flooding back and she suddenly realizes the horrible mistake she'd made by essentially killing the one good thing she had in her life. Her adopted daughter whom she had dedicated her every day to because it was the only thing she had left of her sister. Thats why she cries... because she had so much hate in her heart for Chroniko... because she sold all the good memories, not knowing the horrible things it would cause... its so, so sad... i cri. ertime
Yeah but she also sold all of Chroniko's good memories too. And somehow Chroniko still loved her... If anything, I felt the reason the aunt hated her, was because she reminded her of the sister she lost and it hurt her to remember that. Most people don't get the memories back unless they're directly told (in which case they're forging new memories not simply remembering them) or they had them blocked or tampered but not sold.

She removed said memories because they upset her(thus she was callus about it), only remembered when she put them back(regrets decision after putting the memories back) Said memories not in her head when she made the decision
Aunt sold her memories of music and books she had but those were the majority of good memories she had with Chronico and her sister. When she bought back her memories and started to rember them you can see that they are either playing music together, Chronico humming or she's reading the book to Chronico.
This anime really explores motherhood. You have the idea of mother's sacrificing themselves for their children (Popo's mother), children betraying their own mothers (Popo and the twins), mothers betraying their own children (Cronico's mother and Warp's mother), people redeemed through the love they have for their mothers (Vanilla and Popo) and the idea that no matter what there is a unbreakable bond of love between mother and child that neither half can deny.

Couple of flaws too, the one who betrayed Chronico was her aunt, Chronico's mum is dead and Warp's mum knowingly didn't make him drink enough poison to kill him, she did that because she wanted to save warp from some kinda political fight for power. Also, that weird bird thing has the memories of Warp's mum and every time it was on screen it did everything it could to protect Warp up until it died while protecting Warp.

After the death of Chronico's mother, the aunt basically treated her like her own children, only turning hateful after she sold the memories of their experiences together and stopped seeing Chroniko that way. And you're right that the story is deliberately vague about why Warp's mother poisoned him and shows she still loves and protects him. But from Warp's perspective it was a huge betrayal. The entire finale of Kaiba is about him overcoming the *idea* that his own mother tried to kill him. Obviously the mother-child dynamic isn't the only theme explored in Kaiba. That's one of the reasons it's so great; you can watch it and focus on a completely different idea than another person. Or you can just watch it to enjoy the unique art, surreal style, and minimalist approach.
I see, I guess I misunderstood what you meant by that. And you're right, I didn't consider Warp's perspective. The things that stood out to me most were bits of social commentary and the way it explores emotion and morality.
I think that hour interpretation is very limited and kills the show's true message which is the relationship between love and betrayal, which is far more present throughout the stories of all characters.

This anime was a perfect example of how fantastic a show can be. Not a single character was unlikable, no a single episode was bad. It was amazing. Everything about it, the music, the story, the animation, the satire style. Everyone needs to watch this. At least watch the Chroniko episode or "Granpa's Treasure"
Lenore Xat "no a single episode was bad" the last four or five episodes were the epitome of a clusterfuck though. It rushed to explain every character's motivation even the ones we just barely knew. There's a lot to like honestly but I'm not sure they thought about how to end the show properly. Maybe because of budget problems like most animes.
maybe i am stating the obvious, but for me this ost feels like a clock ticking. it starts out slow, but as you grow older it becomes really fast and a bit chaotic, just like life. then eventually the fun ride suddenly stops. fucking gorgeous piece of music. :)
just that chronico wasnt old at all and died cuz the doctor didnt capture her memories. srsly, chronico had the most fucked up story from the entire anime.
What are you talking about? Chronico just died. The worst ending is for the pet animal thing watching a memory homunculus puppeting her human body that she will never get back. The horror as she gets to watch her loved ones treat it like her as she gets swept off to the side.
This song, combined with the whole chroniko situation is just...so emotionally depressing And then the scream after the aunt realizes what she has done.... It's so heartbreaking I almost cried my heart out
Just finished this show today. I loved it so much, the art was so expressive and MADHOUSE is never a slouch when they want to make things move. Definately one of my favourites now!
It have a realy interesting effect on me: I watched it a while ago and don`t remember much, but it makes me feel REALLY SAAD. As if i just lost a friend or dream, but no particular events are associated with that music. Just pure emotional response.. Strange.
Yeah, that part broke my heart so bad. How could he even do this... He tortured a gentle souled girl, it was her last moments, darnit, you already got your money, at the very least leave that poor girl alone thinking everything will be alright. I had to put my good ol' cat down last month. He died surrounded by love, in my arms, hearing over and over that he was a good Charlie. He didn't hear me say mean stuff to stress him out. I started watching Kaiba a few days ago (I'm at episode 8 at the time i write this), needless to say this scene hit me like a ton of bricks. This anime needs more recognition, it's awesome.

Villains have to be forthright about their intentions so that the audience knows whats going on. I just watched and finished this show today. While the first two episodes were good in their own right, it was Chroniko's episode that really got me invested into the world. Amazing.
I love this whole episode, cause if represents the whole thing about people only remembering the bad things, And they only remember the good parts on rare occasions or when its too late. This whole anime is beautiful and full of meaningful stories and metaphors. It makes me feel less alone somehow, and makes me calm whenever i rewatch it.

To me this and the tree songs are good parallels. The way they are used... Wanting to feel more but nothing changing, leaving guilt over how pointless your actions were. Wanting to feel less and changing everything, leaving regret over the things you lost and sacrificed to get that far.
This is i my favorite anime...it had a story to tell and did it well. Nothing in it seemed like it was there to fill time. The art style is amazing and is actually the reason i watched it. This anime is so different from others and i love it. I feel like all people should watch this. This anime is one of a kind and nothing will ever be like it.

God, How isn't there a sequel or remake to Kaiba yet? The series is just, unexplainable yet familiar. I love it so much and I'm just sad there isn't too many episodes to it.
Kaiba had this constant theme of love all throughout. Love of family and friends and love between lovers, of course. How some people sacrificed things for those they loved, how some people lost sight of how much they cherished that person until they were gone, and sometimes how even how that love transcended appearances and it even sometimes transcended having memories replaced or deleted. In the end, love won.

It's been a few years since I've watched this, and I only thing I rmb about the show is that it had a weird ending and that I ugly cried for this particular episode. I don't even rmb what happened in this episode but dang, I'm surprised the feels and depression withstood the passage of time.
Because it is like Disney in style. The old Disney like when you cried during Dumbo when those racist crows showed up and then the circus turned into a nightmare.
sadest episode of this whole anime was chroniko's part in episode 4, I really wish if she didn't die, she's the purest character of the whole anime, she didn't deserve that treatment man 😢 well technically she didn't exactly died she as there's a chance that her memory still can be collected and been put back in another body, but still.

This is gonna sound random, but does anyone remember an amv about Kaiba that had a some lofi/vaporwave/synth song. I think the name of the song started with a P, maybe PS,PSS,PSUT? I think the video has been deleted or privated. I remembered the anime, but not the song or it's awesome album. Also, it had that same frame as the thumbnail.

Amazing show by amazing Masaaki Yuasa. Anime community really need this freshness. It seems lately that anime lost its edge a bit and got trapped in boundaries industry set itself... That's a shame really... At least we have this gem to revisit. It's always a pleasure. First time or one-hundred first time =)
