Joe Duplantier discusses how Gojira went back to their roots on 'Magma' | Aggressive Tendencies

  • Joe Duplantier says they're "more friends" with their music today, having more fun and being more challenged playing with the subtle dynamics, which he insists are even more technically challenging - even if it doesn't seem like it. Gojira really keep it in the family (and not just literally with Joe and his brother Mario), so they tend to not collaborate. Joe explains that their decision to self-produce 'Magma' was their way of going back to their roots. October 20, 2016.

      How did it make you metal/hardcore if it’s not metal more like smooth metal and great I guess idk nvm I’m dumb.And yes magma is a good album not my favorite but it’s good enough people just hate because it’s different

    people love to hate on Opeth for the same reasons. I'm glad Gojira is focusing on creating music they feel good about

      The way true artists should and do. Our interview with Mikael Akerfeldt kind of focused on similar things, basically was aiming to give them a platform to reach out and explain themselves to people who don't understand. I appreciate both bands' post-death metal work.

      That's really the difference between metal and pop. You don't always get what you expected and that's lovely. Love you Joe and thanx Aggressive Tendencies for this interview!

    What people claim Magma lacked heaviness I say it compensates with having more melodic and harmonic depth. This album has a lot of "soul" dare I say

    not only are there great songs on Magma, but the entire album is extremely well-edited and the mixing is spot on. The fact that it was self-produced speaks volumes about this guy and this band.

    I love the organic changes that happen between Gojira albums, they're all distinct but still all super Gojira-y.

    the people really who hates on gojira for doing magma , they realy didnt hear terra incognita or the link . you find them familiar with from mars , the way and l'enfant . Gojira has always been an changing band , a progressive and experimental band , and terra incognita is their most experimental album to date .

      Imgine if Radiohead or the Beatles just did the same shit they did from the begining. We would never have Revolver or Ok Computer.

      In my opinion, The Link has more experiments. Either way, for me it is great that a band can produce what they would like to hear, plus, having different songs that matches different aspects on one's life is awesome, it means that the band is as organic and as fluid any person is.

    • @xXxThelegend27xXx

      Actually, Fun Fact, The "Slide" was started on the link, so they did have at least one experiment that worked out! 😃

    People must understand that if they were creating music specifically designed for what their fans wanted then it would be worse. Forced music is never as good as music honest to the creator.

      SynTheSK Syn the last two albums are softer (not soft,but softer) than the first 4. When things change people tend to speak their minds. I think people are just worried they’ll continue the trend of getting softer. Most Gojira fans haven’t made statements like “I’m done with this band” or “this isn’t Gojira anymore”. They’re not hating on them. They’re just worried about the trend.

    People think bands sell out...what actually happens is that they develop, grow and get better at writing and arranging. This makes them more popular of course!

  • @Selkirk69

    why would anyone be negative about Magma?..it is just, or more, creative than any of their others, it's called trying a different flavour or switching gears a little. I am a huge fan of L'Enfant Sauvage but if every album was the same, it would get boring. Let them express themselves as they see fit, feel, I'm sure their future albums will be plenty heavy. How many other bands have been so homogeneous with their sound....Slayer...that after 7 or 8 albums it only appeals to a small fan base who really likes "that sound" and that you know the band before the first 2 measures are played. Ghost put out Prequelle which is a huge departure from their Meliora album but it was brilliant and daring and I'm sure Tobias will rescind a little on the next. Part of enjoying music is to grow a little with the band to be receptive to a little change. Most death metal bands that survive are infusing progressive elements into their music btw although, to me, Gojira are just as progressive as death metal or sludge metal it is just that their flavours are constant but subtle, complex.....French.

    Well, I am one of those who "hate" on Gojira for their deviation from death metal. Well, not hate obviously. I love Gojira. I am just disappointed with them making softer music. Magma was indeed good. But my least favorite of all their albums. The way of all flesh is the fucken best followed closely by Terra and L'enfant Sauvage.
    I just wish they still make that ole aggressively jarring style of death metal.

      Prateek Yadav Magma is actually my favorite from them. All of their albums are great in their own way. I’m with you on wanting them to be heavy,but I liked Magma so much because it has heartfelt lyrical content and dynamic contrast between the songs and within them too. Pray is a perfect example of that. I also don’t like when bands make all their songs sound the same (i.e. Lamb of God,though I do like them),so the last two Gojira albums have been refreshing.

      @@corbinm5237 Very well stated. I was half afraid of being blasted when I got the notification of your comment. Oh, well you know how internet can be. So, thanks! Btw. Magma, the song, is one of my favorites from them. Beautiful song.

    • @corbinm5237
      @corbinm5237 5 років тому

      Prateek Yadav haha well I’m an understanding person. I really don’t think people should be criticized for musical taste because that’s about preference and it’s subjective rather than objective. I understand people have different tastes,so you enjoy what you want to enjoy. I was just stating my thinking because I wasn’t sure if you felt there were reasons why even hardcore fans of Gojira’s older music would love Magma.

    • @corbinm5237
      @corbinm5237 5 років тому

      Prateek Yadav and Magma is actually my least favorite song from the album haha. But it’s still good though,I agree. And The Way Of All Flesh is 4th or 5th for me but it has some incredible songs on it.
