My current routine for my combo/ dry skin is AM: cerave hydrating cleanser, vitamin C, and Neutrogena hydro boost gel moisturizer with 15 spf and I apply another sunscreen 30spf as a final step. PM: micellar water (if I’m wearing makeup), wash my face with cerave hydrating cleanser and I do this twice to ensure all makeup is off. Then I add a few drops of marine hyaluronic’s all over and then apply niacinamide and alpha Arbutin. I then apply the cerave cream (it’s a thicker consistency) all over my face, neck and chest area. Finally I apply some squalene oil and let that absorb. So far this is working great for my skin but I need toner recommendations and also a mist possibly since I have the Mario mist (I know it’s bad but I just wanna finish it now 😅). My concerns are mainly hyperpigmentation and skin dullness

      Hey,😊 your routine sounds excellent!
For toners, I haven't tried that many toners and so far there was not a toner that I liked😅 I recently ordered the Paula's Choice ENRICHED CALMING TONER which I haven't tried since I'm still waiting for it to arrive😊
For a facial mist, I recommend the Avene Thermal Spring Water or the La Roche Posay Thermal Water.
For blackheads, I recommend a Salicylic acid solution/exfoliator such as the black one from Paula's Choice, which you also could only use on that specific area😊

hi, I love your videos so much but I have a quick question. I have the ordinarys niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and alpha Arbutin serums. I know that I can use all of those together, but if I wanted to separate them (like do 2 in the am and 1 in the pm or 1 in the am 2 in the pm) what do you recommend doing for that like routine wise? Thanks so much!

Well, this is up to you haha😅
Since those are all water-based products:
If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first).
You could also for example do it like this:
      AM
      Niacinamide
      Hyaluronic Acid
      PM
      Alpha Arbutin
      Hyaluronic Acid
As long as you don't use something that contains a pure form of Vitamin C in your routine when using Niacinamide or Alpha Arbutin, you're fine!😊

Well, to figure it out, you'd have to use the products individually for some time. Otherwise, it's just guessing. It could be either one of them. However, I'd lean towards the snail mucin cream or the sunscreen, as Alpha Arbutin is quite basic, and I've rarely read about it causing irritation.

Hi Melissa! Love your videos! 💙
I have a little question and id be so happy if you can help me!
I ve been using the Ordinary Niacinamide since april as AM routine together with a moisturizer or sunscreen and as PM routine ive been using Bioderma white objective night serum (Vitamin C).
Ive recently purchased Alpha arbutin and Hyaluronic acid from the Ordinary and wanted to know if it can be used together with vitamin C (in PM routine) or is it enough to just use it in AM routine.
    Thank you! 🤗

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  4 роки тому

Hello. I recommend using the Alpha Arbutin in the morning and evening. You have to be careful with the Hyaluronic Acid as it can get sticky very quickly when layering a few serums. I recommend using less maybe 1-2 drops. But generally speaking, you have to experiment and see what works best for you. They can be used in the same routine, yes. 😀

Hey 😊Be careful with the Alpha Arbutin. If you mix them, please do a patch test first. Not sure if that is because of the lactic acid it contains because I assume that it is only used to balance the pH. But because Alpha Arbutin is a depigmenting agent, it makes the skin sensitive to the sun and therefore, it's advised to use sunscreen during the day, yes.

The general rule of thumb for order of application is:
      1. Water-based serums
      2. Anhydrous Solutions and Oil Formulations
      3. Creams & suspensions
      Important:
If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first).
It’s recommended using no more than 3 serum formulations in a single routine for optimal skin penetration.
About 2-3 drops of each serum and 1 pea-sized amount of creams should be enough for the full face and neck.
Always apply sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun!!
      AM Routine:
      - Cleanse
      - Alpha Arbutin (Water-based Serum | Daily | AM and/or PM)
      - Buffet (Water-based Serum | Daily | AM and/or PM)
      - (Optional) Moisturiser
      - SPF
      PM Routine:
      - Cleanse
      - Lactic Acid (Water-based Serum | Daily |PM)
      - Hyaluronic Acid (Water-based Serum | Daily | AM and/or PM)
      - Niacinamide (Water-based Serum | Daily | AM and/or PM)
      - (Optional) Moisturiser
It is not recommended to use Buffet (- Peptide) in the same routine than Lactic Acid ( - Direct Acid).
You can use Lactic Acid daily or only a few times per week.
Also, gradually incorporating one new product into your regimen at a time and applying test patches first to see what works best for your skin.
With any new formulation, some sensitivity or initial redness can be normal. Initial redness upon application is not a cause for concern if it goes away after a few moments.
      Hope this helps🥰

Have you already had a look at a Salicylic Acid solution or exfoliator (which can be used daily)? The Oridnary has one but it is currently not available. Another option would be the SA exfoliating solution from Paula's Choice or something similar because SA targets the following:

      Hey, thank you😊
How was your skin before you were using the saop?
Have you had any pimples before using the soap as well?
What kind of scars do you have?
Getting a few pimples here and there can sometimes happen, due to stress, your diet or hormones.
The Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% is a pure form of Vitamin C which means that it is not recommend using the niacinamide and vitamnin c in the same routine.
Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% can only be used alongside Vitamin C derivatives:
      - Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%
      - Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F
      - Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate 10%
Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% cannot be used alongside any pure or ethylated forms of Vitamin C.

Alpha arbutin is often used to treat hyperpigmentation / irregular skin tone. However it takes quite long to see changes (at least 3 months) and most often, you wont need to apply it to the whole face, only certain areas (nose, cheekbone, eye area) Applying this product first and targeting these areas specifically, thus allowing it to penetrate first will give it a better chance of reaching the melanin irregularities deep within your skin and working on evening out the skin tone (without the niacinamide being in the way if you use too much and not all of it can be absorbed by the skin).
I hope this makes a bit of sense. Unfortunately I can't explain it as well as the customer service of the ordinary when I asked her the same question.

When using the peeling solution for the first time, please have a look at this video:

You can use Alpha Arbutin and Niacinamide after the peeling solution as well (I do not recommend using Azelaic Acid, since this is another Acid). But to start off with I recommend keeping it simple when using the peeling solution and just finish with a moisturiser if you feel the need.
Also, if you are new to Alpha Arbutin, Niacinamide and Azelaic Acid, please use them once per day to start off with so that your skin can get used to it before using it 2x times per day.
And there is no benefit of using Azelaic Acid 2x times per day.

      Hey🙂
Those 3 are all water-based serums so, If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first).

your videos are so helpful, informative and well explained. however I wonder why your skin seems very damaged even you've been using all these "good" products... though I wanna try them I'm kinda afraid to. I truly need your encouragement.

What do you mean by "damaged"? The pimples? No, until today, I can still not get it fully under control. I always get a few during my period 😖 None of the skincare products works to keep it fully under control. However, it has improved a lot. So if you expect a miracle while using these products, you will not get it. However, if you want to improve your current skin condition, it will work when using it regularly. Unless you use these two products shown in the video to target Melasma, it won't work, but the products also do not claim they can do it. Most people think of it as a cure, but I assume that that is because some influencers promote them in a sneaky manner to sell more products, but not sure could be wrong about that 🤪 (You can watch my newest videos to see the improvements) And thank you 🥰

Please use a moisturizer! Without it you’re not locking and all the hydration from the products...

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet

Hello, that's not true. I recommend only using a moisturizer if you have dry skin; otherwise it does not make any sense. If you have oily skin, the sebum works already as an occlusive adding a moisturizer on oily parts is not beneficial!

      👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 moisturizer is a must

@@katiajb Again it's not needed for certain skin types. You can look at the Book Cosmeceuticals and cosmetic ingredients (chapter 7), and also look at baumannskintypes.com/. Most moisturizers include occlusives that are not needed. They are not necessary for most people with oily skin types. It's enough to add a blend of hyaluronic acid and antioxidants. Can you please mention your source as well?

Yup, I went to Esthetics school just last year.
All skin types need a moisturizer. Specifically with “oily skin“ you should use one that is noncomedogenic. FYI, Oily skin can eventually become dehydrated. In turn producing more sebum to overcompensate.

I haven't tried that, but remember to use a small amount of each treatment for the undereye area to avoid overapplication and potential skin irritation.

    5. Cotz sunscreen

This looks great to me! I recommend keeping it simple before adding anything else and use it for 1-2 months until you can tell if it improved your skin or not.
But based on your concerns, that are the products I would go for!😊
Depending on how oily your skin is, you may find it a bit better without using a moisturiser and may replace it with a hydrating serum that has hyaluronic acid in it😊
