    Crysta, Fiona, Te Fiti, Ariel, Moana, Anna and Pocahontas altogether in one animated female guardian would be how I see Mavka in her film character. Its wilderness scenes are like Tarzan's in the idea of protecting nature they're just calmer. In guardian ideas of who was chosen and how Mavka was treated, it also reminds me of Firedrake The Silver Dragon film.

      So true! If you had to give the movie a grade, what would you give it? How would you compare it to Disney quality?

    Im 40, but ADHD so never grew up, lol, this movie looks interesting to me but the straight to DVD advertising concerned me a bit, thank you for doing a review on it! Def interested now! I wonder if I can rent it off of UA-cam or something to watch first. Also interesting because I do a gift drive each year and this type of movie are the things I tend to gravitate towards

      I just bought the dvd yesterday. The highlights are the beautiful animation and the music. I agree that the movie does delve too much into exposition while the dialogue can be choppy at times. While not a perfect movie, Mavka:The Forest Song is an enjoyable movie to watch.

    This is not direct adaptation of Lesya Ukrainka's work. This is animation for kids, story is different, happy ending.
    P.S. this movie was supposed to have better design and animation(as shown in the first trailer) but lack of money brought a lot of changes.

      @@MovieReviewMom I think this is a good opportunity to get a light touch on the elements of the original Ukrainian culture. The problem is that traditional Russian imperial policy consists of the deliberate Russification of small nationalities and the erosion of their cultural heritage. The result of this policy, in my opinion, was the erroneous association by Americans of the various nationalities that were part of the USSR with the Russians, despite the fact that these are completely different peoples, with different mentalities, cultures and historical pasts. This film demonstrates the original Ukrainian flavor: clothes, songs, dances, buildings, which in themselves are unique and interesting for an unsophisticated Western viewer. At the same time, the film was shot in a Disney style that is convenient for most modern people to perceive. And that's what makes the film special.

    • @MovieReviewMom
      @MovieReviewMom  6 місяців тому

      I absolutely agree and love the way you explained that. Most Americans don't even know where Ukraine is, let alone what their culture is like. I think your phrase "light touch" perfectly describes the simple introduction this movie is for many viewers. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! @@Angelorademon

    I definitely recommend you to read original poem (if it available in your language), the cartoon take just a surface and some characters. Lesia Ukrainka is a true genius, even Catrine Deneuve quoting her constantly. it's bugger me a lot that Ukrainian culture was always in a shadow of a ruzzian "culture" and never gets worldwide recognition (even just some people knows that "Carol of the Bells" has Ukrainian origin)

    • @MovieReviewMom
      @MovieReviewMom  7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for sharing your information about the poem and Lesia Ukrainka! Do you think this film is a good enough introduction that many people will want to read the original poem?

    • @besconst
      @besconst 7 місяців тому +1

      @@MovieReviewMom cartoon is average. it's more like Ferngully adaptation. but it's fine for our animation industry. original poem are more tragic and have more folk/ethnic nuances to discover

    2. Is this the Ukraine version of Pocahontas? Because it is very similar. Forest friends & Willow.

    • @MovieReviewMom

      I'm not surprised you mentioned Pocahontas, the mean leader in the town has her own reactions, but yes her clear greed reminds me of Ratcliff.
