This is bs. Wheeling, WV is not the cheapest city in the country. The salaries don't match the rental prices because they bounced way up with gas workers. There is a huge box store mall nearby around a Cabela's in Tridelphia which is most of the revitalization. Buying a shell for $10K there is not really a great idea. Buildings were literally crumbling onto people. I think they've fixed some of that. It's an okay place to live if you're a hermit.
Absolutely! I mean, i think people who think they want to come here need to talk to those of us who have lived here our entire lives. We'll tell you the truth. But you need to talk to people from different parts of one area, and I'd say ages 60 and under. The baby boomers and their now aging parents live/lived very different lives than their children are living here. Older people are living off of mining industry retirement and insurance, that will not be here in the next few decades I'd say. My point is that it is a poor economy and the only way you're going to make money after buying those houses, is to rent them out as air bnbs and pray that the major drug players from different areas of the country that come here and bring their fentanyl laced drugs, don't end up in your air bnb. Or if you're a hermit who works from home, or an already generational wealthy young traveler that loves all things outdoors every season. Other than that, they'll fix those houses up and have a fixed up house. The end. I'm so bitter today. Lol!
Don't forget guys. It's a small town, where unless you're in one of those mansions there, you can probably find a house there for ~60k and it won't even need a quarter of those costs in repairs.
That might have been true a few years ago but the majority of those people got into MAT programs and have worked really hard to get off of the drugs that were so carelessly prescribed. As a result of that, WV has now won a lawsuit and is putting that money back into the community to prevent anything like that from happening again. It’s a large amount of money and I’ve even seen in an article that they don’t even know what to do with the money right now. They’re holding meetings to appoint a board to oversee the money and what it goes into. You can see the breakdown of how much money each county is being awarded.

yeah, no offense to your family I’m sure there’s a few nice people mixed in there like there is anywhere but that whole sector is a no for most people there’s a reason those houses are so cheap because you ain’t gonna find a fucking job in Wheeling West Virginia, 90% of the population and maybe I’m exaggerating a little maybe I’m not is on welfare again no offense to people who are on welfare who need it but I think we can agree a lot of them do not need to be there’s a lot of drugs, obesity, poverty crime it’s just not a great area and there’s fucking cheap houses to be had the country over just depends on where you’re willing to live. I guess you have to think about more than the buying price of the house you have to think about the actual value and market is sticking any money into a house in a particular area you could end up losing money very easily, especially in the current market if there’s no jobs no comps in an area well then you’re just pretty much throwing money down the drain
@@jordanalandry1866 I'm well aware that the area is economically depressed. I already said that. I also said that I'd like to work with the Chamber to revitalize the area... which is the Chamber of Commerce's job: to encourage economic growth and business success. And since I'm happily in a remote job and also run a small business, I wouldn't be looking for a job there. I'd be looking to CREATE jobs, and to incentivize other business to set up shop there. Which is how you revitalize an economy... and that has been done countless times in cities that most people had given up on, including where I live - a city that was dying 20 years ago and is now a tech/STEM and logistics hub. And for the record, the poverty rate is 15% in Wheeling, and the median household income is more than twice the poverty line. Combine that with the fact that the cost of living there is amazing, you get a place with lower poverty and lower cost of living than most major cities in the US. So, no, sorry, 90% of the people are not on welfare lol I also find it odd that you say "I'm sure there's a few nice people mixed in there..." @@maggie0285 I agree and disagree. The place is poor, and the education is some of the worst in the country. There are hard working people, but overall, appalachains typically value leisure and family over their work. However, that's not to say the place is horrible. The land is beautiful, the people are much more friendly than in other places, the towns and cities are small and the sense of community is greater than in other places. We lived in Wheeling for 5 years. We loved it, but it is in a seriously depressed area.
So you’re saying it’s a perfect place to live if you work from home and make a lot of money
@@darkma1ice exactly. My husband and I commuted to Canonsburg, PA for work each day (40-50 mins). It's a very cute small town on the river. If you love old houses like I do, you'll love looking around. But drugs are just horrific in the area and job prospects are almost none unless you work in hospitality.
@@darkma1ice if you make good money you want to steer clear from a drug addled shithole like the entire state of WV lol
@@darkma1ice Exactly. Thanks to the internet and COVID, you don't have to live in California or New York to make a living and have a decent place to live. Its all about the $$$$$...
Houses are cheap where there are not enough jobs to support the market. If you're an outside from a high cost of living area $10k ($150+k construction loan), it sounds cheap. Also, a lot of people don't have the $ to maintain large houses like that anymore.
The sad part is a lot of these towns along the Ohio are quite run down, but very historic and in need of some love. Wheeling is nice, but very poverty stricken and places like this are in the older part. Go a bit further downtown and it's the projects. Steubenville is a lot like Wheeling in this respect.
or rip down the house and build 3 small houses on the space for $150,000
You can buy houses like this all day long in Northwestern Pennsylvania, about an hours drive north of Pittsburgh. Lawrence County ( Beaver Falls, New Castle, Ellwood City) Mercer County ( Mercer, Sharon) and Erie County.
Beautiful scenic areas with lots of small town charm. Perfect for remote workers who appreciate a slower pace of life. Lots of farms and Amish surround the towns where you can buy fresh homegrown and homemade products. Houses are super cheap and many dont need a full renovation and you can move right in and do the fix ups while living there.
In the UK we cherish these sort of properties. New builds, while practical, have no character. Love this house. It’s gorgeous x
As beautiful as she makes this look I promise you it's not I live 40 minutes from wheeling these houses are abandoned for a reason 💀
where i live in the uk you cant get a2 bedroom 1 bathroom terraced house for less than 300k even in a fairly rough area an hour from london so i would love a house like this. the renovation would be a cool challenge too
Yep. I have a bridge to sell you!
In the UK every property in the entire town would be listed and awarded heritage status and you would have to apply for permission everytime you wanted to remove a single timber frame. And a dilapidated house would still cost hundreds of thousands. But in America, homes like this go to neglect everyday and sell for less than a car. Mind boggling. I guess it's because it's such a big country.

While this area and south eastern Ohio (where I grew up) are truly riddled with meth and heroine these days, they actually used to be beautiful serene places once upon a time. My best childhood memories were in Ohios rolling hills. I have a good sense of humor and I understand how easy it is to crack jokes about the opioid epidemic but sometimes it just hits different when you return to your hometown only to find all of your best friends from high school are laid on side walks or in parks with needles in their arms. It would be truly pleasant to see people start to come back into the rural areas and kick things back in gear. Unfortunately, they’ve all pretty much become ghettos since people from bigger cities started to prey on the small town people when they realized how much drugs they could sell into the areas. Seems like every other day someone I know or their family members die from an overdose.
Is so sad this is all happening in the US.
I guess it really is easy to CRACK jokes about the opioid epidemic, if you managed to sneak one into that very sentence
I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone out on the sidewalk in the area. I mean it’s probably happened but it definitely isn’t common. You are spot on about the ghettofication.
Big city slickers came and ruined the town wham all they had to do was say no? Say no to drugs
@@cbo9090 I’m from the southeastern area where it’s at its worst(Chillicothe, McArthur, wellston, Portsmouth). When I used to visit with my spouse and children, I couldnt even take them to the park I grew up playing at because there were literal heroine needles in the sand at the play ground. They removed the sand and had to put in a hard rubber material so people would start going back there.

Like I said glass was a big industry in that area. Still is to an extent.
Down to the south at the edge of the Pocahontas coal field was the little town of Bramwell. At one time it had the highest per capita of any other town in the country because of all the coal barons who lived there.
Coal, timber and glass were very lucrative at one time.
Bramwell had some lovey homes too but I think they were hard hit by flooding a few years ago.

West Virginia literally has nothing to offer, they don’t even got a bucket lying around for anyone. Houses there are cheap for a reason.

Bruh your constantly breathing shit with asbestos the United States hasn’t banned it yet
Ambitious undertaking! Bravo! Go!
And if you want a bunch of new friends just shake a pill bottle.
That goes for literally any state.
Been to Wheeling so many times bc my grandpa lived near there... Wheeling has so much character, but is very economically depressed, so... pros and cons
Would honestly love to work with the chamber there to help revitalize the place... it is such a beautiful area with so much history, and the people are good people there.
yeah, no offense to your family I’m sure there’s a few nice people mixed in there like there is anywhere but that whole sector is a no for most people there’s a reason those houses are so cheap because you ain’t gonna find a fucking job in Wheeling West Virginia, 90% of the population and maybe I’m exaggerating a little maybe I’m not is on welfare again no offense to people who are on welfare who need it but I think we can agree a lot of them do not need to be there’s a lot of drugs, obesity, poverty crime it’s just not a great area and there’s fucking cheap houses to be had the country over just depends on where you’re willing to live.
So, no, sorry, 90% of the people are not on welfare lol
I also find it odd that you say "I'm sure there's a few nice people mixed in there..." That makes me think you've never actually been there, because, on average, the people there are good folks. Maybe not rich, but good people.
But sure, keep talking about an area I'm guessing you've never been to and people you've never met. Maybe another f-bomb will improve your take lol
I'm just saying as someone from Ohio whose husband is from right in this area by the WV border, not only are a lot of these small towns around here riddled with hard drugs, being on the Ohio river isn't exactly a selling point 😭

@D W people make fun of West Virginia because they think everyone is poor and stupid. Ohio and West Virginia is part of the Appalachian mountain area and they think the people are uneducated. They are some of the best hardworking people who would lend their last dollar to someone
@@maggie0285 I agree and disagree.
Maybe the people aren't the most educated, but they aren't stupid.
