You know, half of what made Bob Fosse's signature style was Gwen Verdon and the way SHE moved. He didn't have much formal training and was a vaudeville tap dancer at heart. She had a great deal of training and had been dancing with the Jack Cole group in LA before they met. In their earliest works, you can see he's still trying to find his signature style and she was so precise in her dancing, he adopted a lot of the ways of movement she had. Their daughter, Nicole, has commented on this in several interviews and that it's her opinion as well that what made the "Fosse" style was Gwen Verdon's influence. She was the Ultimate Fosse dancer. She's followed by Ann Reinking and Dana Moore as female quintessential Fosse dancers, especially Ann.
What amazes me is how bloody EXACT the choreography is in this #. This is 4 years after the film of DY, let alone 10 or so years after the stage show, and Ms. Verdon segues right back into Lola- of the swiveling hips, the gyrations, the kooky voice, etc. What a stunning talent she was- even in this modest 'demonstration' led by director-choreographer (and husband to Verdon) Bob Fosse. Great b&w video!!
I was with Bob Fosse on this one, absolutely mesmerized by Gwen. She transforms her body into the most beautiful shapes it's possible to imagine, it must have been such a source of pleasure & inspiration for Fosse to have Gwen bringing his choreography to life. I grinned the whole way thru this performance, they both just seem so happy & alive. His little laugh at the end--they just brought out the best in eachother on stage.
