I see what you did their😉 She had a magical way about her, dont see many like her today...correction : Ive never seen anyone like her, the talent is just exploding
I was there, then. She was extraordinary. Fortunately, film has captured her art, though seeing her in person, to see her moving in real space, was a great thing.
@@latejanaurbana1589 Thank you for your kind comment. But I was just one, albeit a young one, of an audience who wanted and was able to see her at her best, at a time when musicals really counted as cultural markers.
I really envy you. At least there are movies for Damn Yankees and Sweet Charity (even if SC isn't with Verdon and that's a shame for me) but there's almost nothing online about Redhead (except the amazing Erbie Fitch's Twitch number) and she said it was her favourite among all the musicals.
I NEVER knew that this woman was a walking, breathing, dancing legend! I'm glued to watching her performances since FOSSE/VERDON came to television. Kristine Smart, I am an RN at a big VA hospital. I can tell you that if you have constant neuropathic pain and bad circulation in your bad foot and the doctors can't do vascular surgery to fix it, I would not delay an amputation if the doctors suggest it. Here's why: my patients who had a lot of pain in their bad extremities report, without exception, they wish they'd done the surgery sooner because they lived with pain longer than necessary. After surgery, their pain was gone and they went forward with a prosthetic. I know you did not ask for my advice. Forgive me if I offended you. And darn tootin' you can dance up a storm with your prosthetic, right! (If it comes to that)
Actually, they are pretty much cut from the same cloth. She left her show because she had burned out, but also the fact that the cheesy "I'm-so-nice-no-matter-what" act was getting to her.
I love Gwen Verdon to a worrying extent. independent of her unrivaled tallent, you can tell she was so genuine, and kept a child-like air about her to her very untimely end. She died much too soon (but then again I think Olivia DeHavilland died tragically young).
OMG the way she moves was incredible best dancer of her time she did sweet charity on Broadway. Got robbed when the movie got made. I’ve never seen the movie fossi till recently he was really eccentric.
There are and always have been great performers who come across on stage to a much greater degree than on film: Al Jolson, Ethel Merman, Gwen Verdon are just three among many. The opposite also applies . . . Horst Buchholz.
Fortunate we are to have film and video of her. The quality of the video is horrible, but still, I recommend the one of her performing "If My Friends Could See Me Now." Although the video quality is wretched, you can see enough of her dancing to be openmouthed with astonishment: how was it possible for a human being to DO that?! I'll always wish I'd been able to see her on Broadway.

Ann Reinking and Gwen Verdon were close friends - from what I gathered based on my readings, Ann was the only girlfriend of Fosse that Gwen really liked and after Ann left Fosse due to his inability to commit to monogamy, she and Fosse still worked together but they weren't exactly on friendly terms. Gwen, on the other hand, became one of Ann's closest friends. That's why Ann was sitting in the front row of the studio audience - they were on Rosie to promote the Broadway production Fosse, which is essentially a tribute to Fosse. Ann absolutely had very high regards for Fosse and Gwen.
@@kerrijansson2919 Oohhhh, so in the FX series Fosse's young girlfriend Annie was Ann Reinking. Somehow I missed them saying her last name and have been wondering who she was.

Look at the arrangement of the guest's chair and the host's desk. You see this is most american talk shows- the guest has to practically turn away from the audience in order to make eye contact with the host- as here. Or, as on David Letterman's set, his seat towered over the guest's, so that the guest had to look up. You get the impression that these talk shows are really about promoting the host rather than the guest. Compare it to the English equivalents-The Parkinson show ( from the 70s till about 10 years ago) or the current Graham Norton show, and the guests are front and centre.
That was an awkward set design: the guest have to walk down two steps and then back up two more to meet Rosie. The entrance should have stayed on the same level as the interview level.
Hard to believe that Gwen has been gone for 21 years.. What a fabulous dancer/ entertainer she was.

It's great that they were able to include that moment in "Fosse Verdon".

Such a wonderful lady and great performer. There will never be anyone else like her, ever!

Michelle Williams & yes she's phenomenal, she'll win an Emmy for that count on it !
Michelle did an awesome job playing her!!
What a great, great performer Gwen was!!!
Her manners and diplomacy. Her intelligence too. Her patience with Fosses bad husband manners
