- We realized my C4 transmission wasn't downshifting when I accelerated hard, because we never adjusted the kickdown linkage. Well, we fixed that today!

Since you didn’t say in the video, I thought I would fill in a detail. The reason you want to kick down when you floor the accelerator is that gas engine generates more horsepower at higher RPMs. If you need to pass someone, or otherwise accelerate quickly, it’s going to happen faster if the engine is running faster. So, the transmission kicks down to a lower gear to allow the engine to run in a higher range. My 68 impala has a 2 speed transmission so there isn’t a kick down at highway speeds, the engine is already running at a higher RPM. The downside is that just cruising, it sounds like it’s off to the races, and the fuel economy is (even more) terrible! Great video! Keep up the good work!
The EXACT tutorial I was needing for my 1969 Ford Mustang convertible. Me and my 14 y/o son’s next project for this weekend. Thanks Ellie!
" no hands" what every dad likes to hear when his child is driving 🤦🏻♂️😬lol
Great job! The nice thing about the C4 is it doesn't burn anything up when they are out of adjustment. I think you might want to tighten it up just a little bit more so you don't have to mash it to the floor when you want to pass. Great channel, I love your videos!
Excellent demonstration of the kickdown linkage ; I really like the before and after video showing when the linkage was not engaged and fully engaged. . Now I finally understand! Really love the father daughter dynamic , very cool 😎
Ellie you are so inspiring. I love watching you create a thing of beauty. You have an appreciation for the unappreciated. Thank you for being you.
Young Miss Ellie.... You are becoming quite a Mechanic!! 💯👋👋👋👋👋👋
Yes, that's exactly what a Kickdown Rod/Cable does. It enables you to drop a gear when the Throttle goes past 7/8ths Throttle.
FORTUNATELY, you didn't decide to get a Dodge Dart - or any Chrysler Co. Car!
You see, sometimes (always on Chrysler Corp Vehicles), that same thing is used as a TV (Throttle Valve) Linkage. It REQUIRES near perfect adjustment to even get out of First Gear. More than a minor misadjustment WILL cause irreparable Transmission Damage!!! 😲
Sometimes within 25 miles!
Don't panic! Ford Cars and Trucks can actually run fine with the Kickdown disconnected. Really!! It just won't downshift.
The exception there is 1980 and newer Automatic Overdrive Transmissions. They have a TV Linkage - NOT a Kickdown.
Same with GM Cars and Trucks. All older ones (3 speed) had Kickdown Links. All 4 and 5 Speed Overdrive Automatic Transmissions have TV Links.
Just some FYI for you.
GOOD JOB today!! 😎👍👍
Carmine ✈🚂🚙
I see you appearing on all girls garage in the future...good job...
I like her explanation on how kick down works. It gives a burst of energy. That was cute. Love your channel
Ha! Thanks!
I think it's great you are doing this together. My 19 year old daughter is helping me with my 67 mustang. There is no price you can put on spending time together. Especially with projects like these.
Good job. It's an easy adjustment. Get someone to hold it to the floor, then adjust to get maximum kickdown travel on the trans lever.
funny stuff.... Ellie interrupting dad as he is talking... not just once or twice... Not often you have a dad telling his young daughter : "Floor it"
Way to fine tune Carl. The C4 shifts nice. Carl is really coming along. Nice Work on the video too.
This was a good video as it actually showed the linkage in action and what to look for, what to do to change if it isn't working too.
Great job you seem to be learning alot keep up the good work. Carl is coming along great.
Love, Love, Love your videos! You two remind me of me and my daughter. So glad to see the younger generations learning about how and why things work the way they do. Keep up the great work!
That is awesome! Thank you!!
Whom ever sent Ellie the Creeper thank you for being so kind
Now Ellie needs the rolling seat with tool storage under the seat! Amazon has a seat/creeper combo for like $40, sit or fold down for creeper. Pretty cool.
So glad you are sharing your experiences...I have the same setup, just in a '65 Mustang. I just rebuilt and installed my Autollite 1100 carb, and I hope to see if I got it adjusted correctly, (or not) tomorrow, so I can relate to your attention to "little adjustments..." comment.
Always great videos Ellie! Keep up the good work!!
Thank you SO MUCH for your videos and your faith in the Ford l6 motor! My wife has a 68 Mustang we just installed a sniper EFI kit on last night with your help. Having some issues with linkage and kickdown, surprise surprise Google brought me to another video of yours! You are awesome. 😉
Thinking about going C4 in my Foxbody lol this helped definitely subbed 🤝‼️
Carl: luckiest old Falcon, EVAH!
I love "burst of energy"!
Great work as always
Thanks. This helped me understand it a little better. Previous owner did not have one and I certainly need to source one.
Your vids are awesome!! Keep up the good work 💪
GOOD JOB ELLIE!!!!
i built a 302 for my father in laws 73 E300 econoline.. porting and polishing the heads. using good stuff inside. i also rebuilt the C4 transmission.. and went thru the valve body with a recalibration kit that replaced the springs that break after decades.. i knew how he drove. and reinstalled the missing 2/1 kickdown ball.. so he could stomp on the gas in 3rd and it would not just kick down from 3 to 2 but go all the way to low gear.. oh my.. that poor 302 was winding up tight. but the look on his face was worth it. i don't advise that for a used small block with worn oil pump and tired bearings..
Buen trabajo!!!!. Saludos!!!
Good job! Well done:))
This is awesome!! Well done!
Thank you so much!
Great job, 😃👍
Love the video! I've been restoring a '63 Mercury Comet S-22 since 2016. Fired it up for the first time this weekend and turned the carb! I have to drop the tranny pan and adjust the shift bands, plus inspect, etc. Hopefully that will be it.
That's so great!! Good luck on your Comet project!!!
We need to send Ellie some 3 ton jack stands. Those plastic/rubber ramps, I would not trust my life with them.
good video thanks
That's a nice one too
Awesome
It should kick in just a little sooner. Maybe another 1/4 inch more adjustment. That would be perfect.
cool stuff!
It looked like you could have adjusted the cable a little further. There was more movement when you pulled on it. I have 2 Falcons myself and the kickdown or downshift happens before you have to mash the gas pedal.
Cool.
Top Video and nice job love it 👍😍👍
Ok ,great video. Now save the cardboard box from the creeper so you can use it if the creepsr brings up to high. Or dad can use it. Also i believe that the kick down cable should have no slack at all so tighten it up more. The kick down sholud happen about 3/4 of the way down on the throttle not all the way down. That may also raise the shifting points on the transmission. If anybody out there is a trans expert please chime in.
I believe you are right my truck kicks in about 3/4 peddle to.
@@mattharden2441 thank you my good man. I have 2 Ford vehicles with AOD trans and one has metal rod to the trans and the other is a cable, called tv cable. No slack in either one.
Yeah you don't want to have to mash it to the floor to pass. Just keep tightening a little at time till it comes on too soon for the way you drive.
The Best videos!!!
Keep it up l love your videos Ellie
Thank you so much!!
very good video with the linkage in picture explaining it I am buying a 1984 C4 corvette 400hp with a carburetor. and my throttle cable is so long I have to put my carburetor backwards. I see this video as to do with a C4 I was wondering what you are running under the hood and if there is a special shorter throttle cable and mounting bracket I could buy.
There is nothing C4 Corvette about her C4. Watch the video.
Awsom
With that motor you need all the help you can get-
Ellie, what kit did you use to replace the kickdown rod linkage with a cable? I need to do what you have because my stock kickdown rod hits my neutral safety switch. Thanks much! I contacted Lokar, they said they did not supply your kickdown cable. PLEASE you or someone tell me what cable kit you have installed. Thanks!
My 2002 camrey has code for running leen...when I floor it from a stop it seems to work fine...but at highway speeds it just seems to rev high n not kick down..but have throttle it seems to work...could that just be transmission going or kick down cable. 2002 camrey le v6 118000 miles
? Does the kickdown cable affect or have anything to do with the initial warm up process when the car is at high idle and you depress the throttle to lower the idle?
No, that's managed by the choke and the fast idle cam on the carburetor
OMG, you two are sooooóo cute!!!
😁✌️
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
This a joke
🤣
Need a real driver and show how you adjusted it. Too much stupid games.
How irritating. HAHA once, OK. 5 times? Obnoxious. Couldn't watch and not worried I didn't learn something.
