The transmission in our Torino isn't sounding so good. So we're going to take a look at it and see what we can (or maybe can't) discern.

Two things. 1. Maybe the vacuum line has a crack in it . 2 Behind the modulator there's a pin that the modulator pushes on, it can fall out or it's to short. I think if the modulator is changed out for a new one that pin may need to be checked for length, if I remember right I had to change mine to a longer one. I used a 8d finish nail cut to length. If I remember when you put the modulator in it stops 1/8 to 3/16" short and last bit is preload.
On the plate for this week.
Welcome to the wonderful world of antique cars! If it's not one thing it's another.
Word.
I wish & need more mid/ late 60s c4 & c6 videos lov you resto mods thanks Jeff & crew ; ) Wish youtube would keep them in order , so we could fallow you & them Better Lol
With all the work the last owner did, is it possible they put a shift kit in it? A heavy 2-3 shift spring could cause that. Not building enough fluid pressure below 3k rpm.
We think it needs some love on the valve body. Or modulator.
Servo piston leak by can cause forward gears to not work.
Thanks for that. They all work just a really late shift on the 2-3.
I know this will sound crazy, but pour a qt of marvel mystery oil in the transmission and drive it. I’ve used it in sluggish transmissions, that have set up for a while and exhibit shift anomalies like this, for years with decent results. Afterward, I do a pan service with filter, and substitute one of the qts of fluid for another qt of the MMO. It’s a cheap swing at it. I’m not a mechanic in a bottle guy, but MMO has helped me out many times.
That could be an option, but we are going with a pull the pan line since we are going to show adjustments and such.
Enjoyed the video; it's quite common to get an uncommon education here. Most of us would not suspect that a slushbox originally installed in a different car would have slight though meaningful differences that could make a noticeable difference. Thanks to this video, I'll reconsider a few ideas I had.
You guys were probably thorough enough to check the linkages, but when I was young enough to still have a full head of hair 🤣, the selector linkage in my '68 Galaxie broke. Did youthful exuberance play a role? 😇 Nah.
Great to see the Fried Green Tomato out on the road. 😎
There has been some shenanigans on the shifter for sure. The car had an FMX originally, the C4was no longer an option by 1975 (according to the service manual).
Shift modulator????
Maybe
The C4 in our 65 Mustang is a green dot. The first drive position starts in second for traction in snow and ice.
Isn't that a cruiseomatic transmission?
Yes.
Would the modulator contribute to it making a "clunking" noise going from reverse to park?
Truly enjoying these videos, short, great content and well edited/ produced as with great content
Question: do we know @ what ( on average) RPM a C4 should shift at? My C4 seems to shift early, need to confirm with a tach, is this simply the modulator valve? My tranny kick down ( passing gear) is currently disabled; does this affect shift points under hard acceleration?
Great work, I appreciate what all of you do
Low speed would be 10ish mph first to second and 25ish mph second to third. The wide open throttle mph varies by rear gear ratio. 3.00 gear would be first to second at 34-42 mph second to third at 62-76 mph. Different gesrs will change shift points. This is actually a function of the governor, but I ain't going there. Lol
Properly adjusted, the kick down will help under acceleration (passing).
Thank you for the reply. Clearly mine is shifting early as just local I’ll be in 3rd gear at 20MPH simply cruising thru residential streets; at time I’ll manually place it in 2nd.
I recognize the kick down for passing gear but was curious if when under WOT from a dead start if it, in anyway, affects up-shifts, appears not to be the case.
Again, thanks for the note, I’ll need to under the car and tweak things a bit. Enjoy!
Modulator problem! I had exactly the same problem on the same transmission... too long to shift from 2 to 3!
We are hoping that is it. We plan to change to the single port green stripe and possibly do a shift improvement kit.
I know this is totally not in the same area code is what you're talking about now but I'm new at this and I don't know how to work all the things but I have a duel 4 Barrel that runs off the the back carb but has a electric choke on the front carburetor doesn't it need the electric choke on the back carburetor since that is the one that it runs off of
It depends on if that is the only carburetor it runs off of. Some setups are tied together. Problem is I have zero experience with multiple carburetion linkages or set up.
Could be the governor..or modulator needs adjusting or a vac leak..
We will be tearing into it this week.
@@AutoRestoMod I'll be watching the next one.. I'm curious to know..
My original c4 out of my Torino has a 2 bolt boss where the shifter cable bracket bolts to.The seat belts look like a new updated version. Im looking to update mine. Do you have any info on those belts . A bad modulator can cause delayed shifts. Also if your passing gear kickdown is out of adjustment it wont shift into 3rd.
Good tips! Im worried that this C4 lacks that boss and will require some ehhh specialized engineering. If you could send a photo of the boss area I'd appreciate it: jford@autorestomod.com
Nice 😊
Thanks!
D.O.P.E.😆
What pray tell is D.O.P.E.
@@AutoRestoMod Any well versed auto enthusiast knows it mean a Diametric Overdrive Positioner Eccentric. Come on Man/
Could be wrong valve body, take apart, clean, check for stick/binding, change mod first....@ 9;30.thanks Cam, great minds thimk alick.
Cam should be worried...🤣
I dont know c4's but my 76 highboy had a c6 lost 2nd gear completely a local 4x4 shop talked me into a $999 shift kit turned out to be a nightmare every time it shifted through gears jerked me around in the seat they thought my daily driver was for truck pulling
Ugh. That is when those explicit chats are important.
Who owns the yellow one parked in front of the house?
Me. I've owned it since 1994.
Work on that 63 Galaxie!!!!!!!
We definitely are and will. We're jeaded to a door skin and other sheet metal muckery soon.
Is that chip
The Grand Torino is a midsize car
Yep. Ford was still making land yachts in '75.
HELP!! DONT TOUCH WHAT YOU DONT KNOW!!!!!.
I want an old car I recommend touching all of it LOL
