Although Syd was the lyricist and main composer of Floyd at that time, he was very limited technically as guitarist. Actually, in PF at the very beginning, only Rick Wright( and later David Gilmour when he joined the band) was a skilled player
Ive seen a lot of interviews with Steve, he seemed to know EVERYONE and never says a bad word about ANYONE. Dude is a knight of renown in the rock n roll roundtable of great ones.
Steve Howe's band Tommorow made one of the best psychedelic records of the era. I believe they played on the same bill as Pink Floyd at the UFO club. I wish I could have seen them live.
Davy O'List from The Nice stood in for Syd on some gigs (the Hendrix tour?). I think they asked him to join full-time but he declined, hence the approach to Gilmour.
And Howe also went to rehearse with The Nice when O'List left. Keith Emerson said it went really well and they begged him to join, but in the end he didn't want to abandon his current band.
I had no idea that Yes was in the same neighborhood when Pink Floyd were becoming famous. It could have been a totally different band if Steve Howe became Floyd’s guitarist.
No. But Bill Bruford and Jon Anderson once tried to get Robert Fripp join yes on guitar. He declined and they ended up getting Steve Howe. The meeting Sparked a friendship between Fripp and Bruford which eventually led to Bruford joining King Crimson. The cross pollination of English bands in 60s and 70s is insane.
Imagine what Pink Floyd would have been like if Steve replaced Syd instead of David Gilmore. I can't say whether it would have been better or worse, but definitely would have been different.
Well, Syd did write "Astronomy Domine," and he co-wrote "Interstellar Overdrive.". He also played on Roger's "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun." 🗨️🌞🪐🌍🌕
I have the deepest admiration for Steve Howe! His work with Tomorrow alone is classic! He went on to Progressive Rock with Yes which is legendary. I must say though, Syd was very clever and innovative with his use of "Glissando" and the "Binson Echorec Echo Machine Unit." When Mr. Howe called Syd a space cadet, it wasn't a cut. Syd was into electronic experimental music, before that label existed. What a legacy 😊
Syd's biggest influence on guitar was Keith Rowe from the experimental group AMM.
