In June 2001, I interviewed the Pink Floyd legend Roger Waters at Abbey Road Studios.
The focus of the interview is Pink Floyd's brilliant co-founder Syd Barrett.
Barrett was still alive in 2001. He died in 2006.

Honestly, Roger is, hands down, the most interesting to interview, as far as band members. I have seen all of them, and he is actually the most interested and insightful in talking about the history, if he already agreed to.
when you put Roger,David and ricks thought processors together...mind blowing how these guys got together and did what they did...50 years later people like me still struggle to know what it is that their music does to me

A third of the way through this interview I thought the same thing that Dave was talking to Roger. Too bad someone can’t sit down with the two of them and convince each to bury the hatchet. Life is too short no one needs to tell either Roger or Dave that. Syd’s gone and when Rick left us I was hoping that Roger and David would have a change of heart about their relationship but no. I suppose one can hope!
The more i watch Roger Waters being interviewed, the more i like him. Strange to think Syd was still alive at this point. It almost sound like theyre talking about him in the past tense here. And Walk with me Sydney is just great (its here on UA-cam)

Indeed, many thanks! Great interview. Such valuable insight into the origins of the band and Syd Barrett. Did Roger talk about Barrett’s doctor asking the former band mates not to see him after that strange encounter while they were doing sessions for Wish You Were Here? It’s so sad that Syd did have those two LPs with the help of his former band mates only to further mentally disintegrate (it seems) and certainly lose interest in music.

From what I read and heard. Everyone agrees that Syd had become very damaged either by way of a mental illness, use of LSD or both.
The band tried to help but ended up doing gigs without telling him, or simply failing to pick him up on the way to a gig. One of the band members said that he once lied to Syd about going out to buy cigarettes because no matter what condition Syd was in, if he knew there was a gig, he would come along.
This indicates that at some level, Syd was still interested in being part of Floyd.
Latter, when Syd was no longer in Floyd and he showed up unexpectedly at the recording studio, we know that the band explained to him that they were recording Shine on You Crazy Diamond and that the song was about Syd, when Syd was in the recording studio. Apparently, when asked about the song, Syd said that he felt that it sounded old.
Roger Waters relayed that when he asked Syd’s sister whether it would be a good idea to visit Syd (this is when Syd settled in Cambridge), that she said that it would not be a good idea, as it would make Syd angry.
During the alleged last exchange with a reporter, during which Syd was asked whether he was Syd Barrett the “psychedelic Genius” of Pink Floyd, Syd said “that’s enough, it’s too painful.”
So, what do we make of all this? I was not there, but my opinion is that you had a group of young guys who were making it big and while trying to help their troubled band mate, ended up pursuing their dreams. This meant replacing Syd , right before his own eyes.
Later, they end up making a lot of money writing about Syd’s mental illness. In fact, mental illness becomes a theme that they focus in on a lot.
Syd , certainly would have known this. Afterall, he was still alive and we know he heard Shine on You Crazy Diamond as it was being recorded.
So, how would you feel if you were him? Especially if you knew that you they were singing and making money from recounting your mental illness and or drug issue?
They also made a motion picture (The Wall), that had many Syd references. Sure, you can say that they wrote about him affectionately, but showing affection for someone that troubled is likely best done in private and personally.
No doubt, the band’s circumstances (they were all young and ambitious and not acquainted with how to handle illnesses and addictions of this sort), and Syd’s struggles were complicated and I am not laying blame on anyone (I was not there).
But, the circumstances paint a picture of a man (Syd), who was deeply hurt by being left behind and having his issues sung about for all the world to hear. The redeeming quality is that apparently the band was kind to him with royalties etc., I am not sure anyone has made the connection between the songs specifically about Syd’s illness, and the effect it must have had on him. When weighed against his statements, it fits that he was very hurt.
All the band members professed to love Syd, and I believe this. But I wonder if they ever realized how it made Syd feel to be sung about to the world? How would you feel, if you were Syd?
Roger has aged so well. So nicer older, imo. In his prime here

This interviewer needs to remember that if not for Syd, Pink Floyd would never have gotten where they are now. Without the songs he wrote in the beginning, he put them on the map!
I know it is unfashionable with popular thinking and may even be considered cruel by some to say if the band continued along the small scale light psychedelic almost childish music and lyrics of Syd the Floyd would've ended like so many other bands of that period. What put the band on the map was Dark Side of the Moon which was light years from Syd's music. Listen to Arnold Layne and Bike and tell me where do you see similarities with anything in Dark Side and the records following it to the Final Cut.
@@RayMelville Very well said and very true..what is funny though is that Syd wanted to bring in saxophone players and backround girl singers and things like that..the rest of Punk Floyd was like your crazy..no! Then after Syd fell out they did make D.S.O.T.M with saxophone players and women backround singers and other things he had suggested..its like he knew what they needed but he didnt realize he wouldnt be needed.. what Gilmour brought to the group was so important to what they became..D.S.O.T.M is TIMELESS and to me is the greatest album of all time..ecen better than the white album..

@@RayMelville Hard to know what would had happened if Syd continued in Pink Floyd, mentally sane. Who knows probably a completely different and even better band that could be playing together until now? Maybe a better the dark side of the moon would had exist The piper… was just the beginning.
@@jshinno Maybe yes maybe no. Wouldn't be in the minority when I say I wouldn't have been a fan had the band continued along the line they established between Piper and Meddle. Sure they had a few good songs between many pretty boring ones. Certainly nothing as powerful and original compared to what came between DSOTM and the Final Cut. After that period it's been muzak and uninspired attempts to sound like PF under Waters' leadership.
John, I have seen the longer version of this wonderful interview. I was wondering why this interview is almost twice as long as the interviews with the others. Was your conversation with Roger easier than those with the other members of the original Pink Floyd. Wish we could ask Syd Barrett about everything that was said by the others. I like the conversation with Roger Waters the most, because he was a true friend of Syd Barrett. You can see him struggle, but I love the way he talks so freely with you. I have the feeling this conversation with him was easier for you than with the others .... Roger Waters is to me the soul of Pink Floyd ...

He said Corporal Clegg was on the first album, it wasn't. Corporal Clegg was on the second album, A Saucerful of Secrets (1968) The only Waters composition on Piper was 'Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk'. It was a long time ago, but you would think he could remember something like that.
It's the fans that know these details by heart, usually, not the artists. It's like when Willian Shatner is asked about his favorite Star Trek episode and he can't remember a single title!

Yeah, me too. I found the earlier stuff a bit too sweet and a bit erratic. I love the later stuff for it's politics and hard hitting personal insights.
@@johnahh5130 Exactly. But the crowd (most of whom never heard Syd) seem to like repeating that Syd's music was what put Pink Floyd on the map not Roger Waters' creations from Dark Side of the Moon and the records that came after it up to the Wall. Certainly there were masterful pieces in all of their records going back to their second album Saucerful of Secrets in which Syd had but one song, but the scale, the sound, the lyrics, the Wagnerian thematic concepts all bore Waters' signature that was lost after the Wall.
For me it all slaps harder than Zsa Zsa. (Mixed Generational Metaphor.)
There is a stark difference in both the approach to music and songwriting -the way song-craft and recording technology were changing radically from 66/67 to the mid seventies. Bands like them (and the Stones) took the studio power away from the labels.
So it’s also comparing two different eras. Seventies Floyd grandiosity and scope in a sense is one of the styles that punk was reacting to. I like Meddle, though!
In a real sense they’re starkly different styles from the same band.

If we could just cut...ok...I don't think the geezer is belittling Syd's music. His aim is to get the most out of Waters in a fairly good mood!
