Great review you nailed all the points Thanks for the shoutout and all the kind words Pete. That knife use to be a work knife and abused it and I caused the lock rock but that said it didn’t take much at all to cause the rock so I’ll carbidize the lock face and bend it over a little. Definitely one that disappointed me the edge came to me with a visually Burt edge I never even reviewed it lol.

FlamQ Dbltap unfortunately I was the one who battened it along with a bunch of other abusive things when it was one of my dedicated work knives but yeah I’m sure he would have done it as well lol

That's the patented rattle snake rattle safety device , guaranteed to scare off predators . It also doubles as a maraca to accompany your harmonica at the campfire .

This one’s taken a trashing over the years, and I get it; the marketing sometimes gets taken as an invitation to try and destroy it. The video with that other guy didn’t help matters either. Still, it’s one of my favorites for edc. I’ve owned three and the first one did pick up some lock rock (like most Ti framelocks I’ve ever owned) and the DPX warranty department did exactly what they guarantee. It was fixed and returned in short order. Overall, I’ve been happy with the company. The Heat and the Hest Urban are also worthy of your attention. It must’ve been tricky to do a review of that particular knife, but you pulled it off and did a great job.

To fix the lock-up problem simply disassemble and then bend the lock bar towards the inside of the scale therefore increasing lockbar pressure. Also keep in mind its going to increase your detent pressure making it a little moredifficult to open pending on how much tension you add to get it to lock up correctly. Oh also remember when bending the lock bar to add your tension take it slow and be careful not to add too much pressure

As Stassa says here in the comment section, the knife was abused, probably because the people at RYP claim that this is a hard use knife...it is not.
The first iteration of this HEST was taken off the market due to blade rattle caused at least partially by the loose stop pin. The knife was re-issued as the 2.0 edition and the problem was "solved", but the liner on the G10 side was removed...thereby reducing the overall strength of the knife.
But the issue of blade rattle in the HEST 2.0 is probably due to hard misuse (eg. battoning) which will effect the interface of titanium lock bar and blade. LionSteel actually instituted the steel interface on the lock bar/blade on their other knives, and I can only surmise that RYP decided to save a few bucks and not incorporate this now standard fix. But for the record, the much loved Chris Reeve knives uses the exact same system (titanium on steel) and because of the nature (& reputation) of his knives...there are few complaints due to misuse and blade rattle.
The HEST 2.0 is a perfectly fine overpriced, medium to light duty knife, that should last a lifetime under normal use. It was unfair of Stassa to pass on a knife for review that he, himself damaged, and then expected others to do a fair and objective review.
Pete here, did his best with damaged goods. Though to be fair, the hype on the HEST as to it's being a hard use knife is a load of hooey, and this knife almost begs to be mistreated.
These "pass around" knives have to be taken with a grain of salt, and Pete did a good review considering just what was handed down to him.

I bought the HEST-F 2.0 (left handed) years ago directly from DPX and it had a terribly uneven bevel. I returned it and waited months for a replacement. They were having issues securing more of that model, so I said give me whatever you have and ended up with the "Milspec" HEST.
With the Milspec versions of the HEST,-F the pocket clip rests on the lock bar. This was their fix for lock-rock, and it works. You can buy these clips after market from the DPX website. As for the knife, I really like the ergos and blade shape. I reprofiled the edge to 40 degrees inclusive and it looks like a scandi because its so thick. I hope future versions use thinner stock. The Sleipner steel on my knife loses its fine edge very fast, so the HT may be off. Sleipner seems to be hit or miss. Overall I like the HEST 2.0 and think it would be even better if produced by the right facility.

I bought one a while ago based on a glowing review. I was disappointed to say the least. It's super thick, and mine developed the same rattle after a few months of opening and closing and light use.

My son Jordan did 4 tours of Afghanistan. He took a DPX HEST on the first one. He gave it to a mate and took a standard Benchmade Griptilian on the last three (plus a leatherman multi tool) guess that says something about it Pete :-)

  • @pwaletzko

That’s an older HEST there’s no serial number engraved on the blade. My boat knife is a HEST that was a warranty replacement just in case it falls into drink while fishing. Could try sending DPX an email and see what they could do for you. Get a Hinderer if you want a beefy folder or a Revees for fancy dress.

Maybe it was taken apart and the lock bar was pushed to release pressure and it was pushed a little to far

I think that if they will design a folding knife, especially a framelock folding knife for survival, it should come with a pin to insert on it as other makers have done with some knives just in case you need to hard use and have enough time.

I'm not a fan of the bottle opener snagging my pocket either, and they skimped out on the washers. But beyond that, I have the left hand version and with a little lock-tite here and there (including the roto-lock) I am fairly happy with it. I haven't experienced any "blade rock" thank goodness, It feels good in my hand. I do feel that it was over priced. I'm currently saving up for a Cold Steel 4max!

Actually research the knife. There’s a USA made version and a Italy made version. The Italy made version is the one that has lock rock. The USA versions are made by southern grind and have a better frame lock system (steel insert with over travel stop). I’ll admit though, for teh price of the Italian made version, it shouldn’t be like that
