Loving the hand sharpening content you're doing! It's the same abrasives and binder in the Glass Stones and Rock Star stones. The molding process is slightly different.
I just got the 2000 with the nice metal case, its a little weird to open but its cool. Love the stone itself, spent the last few hours going through and servicing all my knives. I picked up a new strop and some 4 micron diamond paste with it aswell from zanvak, I cant believe I've been using the ol green brick for so long. I was content with my Suehiro debado 1000 grit for ages but now I want a 4 or 5k stone and some 2 micron paste.
Same. I just added all the new stones to my amazon wish list 😂🤭😭😑. I've been avoiding this for years but it's time. This was the inspiration I needed lol!!
I was using the back of the Shapton Glass stones with 3M diamond lapping films with good results. (similar to the KME glass films)... I don’t fuss with them much unless these days. Chasing that super fine edge vs how long they stayed that way was more work than it was worth. Though the higher micron films can make a good edge maintenance hone...
Little handy tip with the Opinel knives - pop the lock ring off with a screwdriver and you can sharpen it all the way to the end of the blade eliminating the little nub 👍🏻
an old sharpener's hack with stones that have thinned out a lot is they stick it on wiith epoxy a block of wood or tile or glass so it doesn't break in half or something when it gets super thin
Basically the Rockstar is just the Shapton Glass in slightly softer. I like both a lot but tend to go for the Rockstar more. They can also give you a nice mid grit Kasumi finish, for the people that are into japanese knives.
The opinel blade is actually very well designed. That slight curve in the blade is a recurve they incorporated into the design to aid in slicing. Love your content pete.
I like sharpening Opinels on fixed angle systems - you can close the handle in about 45 degrees and hit all of that edge😊 I had that "nub" thing going too and used it to pierce into tomatoes when that opinel eventually got stropped into "slicing paper, shaving hairs, but gliding on them 'maters" kind of edge in between proper sharpenings
I'm not brave enough or wealthy enough to sharpen on stones but seeing Pete give it a go and having the transition he is going through from assisted sharpeners is starting to make me wonder if I should have a crack at it.
This video made me purchase 3 Rockstar stones the 320, 1k, and 4k. I’ve been looking to upgrade from my king 1/6k combo and to hear these are like larger glass stones sold me thanks 😊
Uuuuhhhhh, careful how you talk about opinels. We are some that take them wayyyy too serious. I love the sliciness of my opinels. Also they are easy knives. Easy to carry, to maintain and to remodel. But then, I also like Victorinox'es. I'm strange like that. 😊
I think the tempered glass was to make sure the stones are totally flat for chisels. You should check out the Nano Hone stones. I feel those cut better than the Shaptons and have much better feedback and feel while sharpening.
Carbide tear out is not real. What is actually happening is people sharpen with too much pressure on there fine stones and they flex the apex and fatigue it. Then it fractures during cutting. Carbides are bound very strongly to the steel. They can be fractured and broken if you use too much pressure but this wont happen near the apex. The apex will flex away like a burr, but further back where there is no flex in the steel they will break near the surface. Todd at science of sharp has documented this with electron microscope imaging.
In my experience, most steels up to 63 hrc can be processed well with the Shapton Pro ceramic grinding stones. Above 63 hrc it becomes tedious and becomes so ineffective as the hardness increases that it no longer makes sense. Hardness and carbide monsters such as Maxamet, 10V or 15V are best sharpened with diamond.
@@achimgeist5185 Thx i know that i tried to sharpen maxmet on naniwa and shapton it was not a pleasant experience i want to buy a spyderco paramilitary 2 in s110v but im wondering if these stones (naniwa chocera 800 and shapton kuromaku 2000) can sharpen this steel
@@jaranjaranski CPM S110V has 9 % vanadium in the alloy and the steel is hardened to 63 HRC on the PM2. I don't have a knife in S110V but in 10V and the grinding with Shapton Pro ceramic stones is a pain. My tip: 200 and 600 grit diamond plate and use the shaaptons for polishing.
Glass Stones seem to be harder and better for the harder steels. Some say they have less feedback. Grit rating on Glass series seems more accurate than Kuromaku line too.
How does this compare with the Korumaku? If I remember correctly you said the glass one had better feedback than your Korumaku 5000. I have Korumaku 320 and 1000 and I’m looking to buy a couple higher grits.
You're correct. It's just a thicker version of the glass 👍🏼

It's like watching the knife sharpening version of Bob Ross
I'm watching just for the Basil scream outro at this point. You used one of my favorite screams this time.
possibly the best scream of all time
scream tier list coming soon maybe
Loving all the videos coming out now 👍
I bought a set of shapton pro from 120-8000, as well as the Rockstar 4000, glad to be on this Freehand Sharpening journey with you!

🎶Hey now, you’re a rockstar…🎶
the sound it makes when the blade is going across the stone is amazing. you know what asmr is?

Hey, really appreciate your videos. They are most helpful.
thanks! i hope my middling skill level sort of helps other people also in the early of kiddle stages to see
I’m just happy to see all the daily content
Jef jewell lent me these stones. They feel very similar to glass stones. Great stones I really liked them.

I'd recommend watching some videos from "outdoors55", he's great at explaining and a big proponent of affordable 1 to 3 stones setup.

hope you like them! i would probably choose then over the glass ones were I to start again. Im grabbng the 16000 soon I hope
liking the regular content. I reckon it at least fills that gap between your 320 and whatever is next, just like you said it would.
I used to be on the fence about cats, but that has all changed. Long live Basal The Metal King.
🔥🤘🏻🐈⬛🤘🏻🔥
you can buy tipless gloves if you like those for sharpening .. TOUGH BODYBUILDERS STAY TOGETHER... THE MIND IS PART OF THE BODY

If you had to thin down a blade stock, what combination of stones would you use?
Aaah, the Openel. Metal complex's favorite knife! 😄
Nice! I have been watching your videos! Thanks for stopping by :)
@CedricAda might have me mixed up with another. Sadly I have no UA-cam talent. I just swing by to enjoy yours 😁
I always wondered why you never went to stones sooner, the KME is good but not as fun

What do you think of the Norton stones?
kuromaku means black mark or black brand or black edition?
Cat 10/10 did you try to sharpen cpm s110v on any of these these stones and were you satisfied with the sharpness ?

@@achimgeist5185 Thank you again i suspected as much but thank you for confirming i'll try to find a s45vn version
I figured out that resurfacing dished stones is a royal pain in the ass, so make sure you use a stone flattener frequently.
Whats the differences between Kuromaku and their glass stones?

you might wanna consider gettingi a stone flattter. a cheap diamond stone will suffice
I use a blademedic Mate..
You probably wouldn't see carbide tear out until using a shapton 16,000-30,000 like Roman found edge tear out on in that range.
