I have 3 BBS02s (2 from BafangUSA, 1 from JohnnyNerdOut) and was planning for a 4th in the future. I want to be able to swap batteries around amongst the fleet, share parts, etc. This is definately a curve ball. Johnny, I hope you can get on top of this, figure out WTF they are doing, and stock up on gears, controllers, etc, so that we can continue to keep the simple, cheap, DIY converted bicycles we love going for a long long time.
As long as the BBSHD is still mechanically robust we can just take out the stock controller and replace it with another one, making the canbus moot (if it’s even a problem).
I have 2 bbs02 motors. Would you recommend buy 1 or 2 incase something goes wrong with them or just some parts. In case something goes wrong. Have not had any trouble with the 2 that we have. If parts what parts should we buy. Thank for keeping us updated.
Jhonny, it would be important to talk about the implications of the BBSHD discontinuation for those who have already bought it. Is there an expectation of issues with spare parts and replacements? For the huge base of current customers, it would be important if there are any issues with support going forward. Thanks for keeping up to date with the industry and it's news!🎉
Was. Planning a DIY got the wheels frame, was going for the O2, does this mean I should buy it now or wait for these new motors? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks for news, Johnny. I almost ordered BBS02. But now not sure which motor is best as of now - BBS02, or ToSeven DM01. Or wait till 2025 when new BBS02 will be available.
As far as batteries, as goes NYC so will go the country.😡 I know it's way off in the future but any chance of UL listed 72 volt batteries &, if so, will you carry them?
Ya I think it will be only a matter of time before all batteries are just UL listed and there is no option for non. 72v will likely be the last domino to fall though as they are not the volume leader.
Thanks for the update jhonny. Will the new canbus motors be torque sensor based? Also if someone could explain to me whats a ul listed battery and a non ul listed battery? Im from the UK I've never heard of this term before. Thanks 👌
I'm not Johnny, but I assume that it will still be the standard cadence sensor motors, the actual hardware is the same, just a different controller. (Torque sensing would require torque sensors to be part of the build.) UL = underwriters laboratories. Basically a certification process that ensures products/systems/processes meet a certain standard. It's a big deal in the battery world where so many cheap batteries were built poorly and would catch on fire.
@nolowputts Thanks for the reply, sir 👍. I think I'll get myself a spare bbs02b for spare parts just in case of incompatibility issues when the new canbus versions become the norm. I guess the UL batteries are probably not a bad thing as I know some of these generic shark batteries for the DIY ebike world contain fake cells and shoddy workmanship when they're assembled.
Half the people I know are freaked out at the idea of ebike batteries catching fire. A UL listing would go a long way toward easing their minds even with no physical difference in the batteries.
Thanks for the updates. I just purchased a Toseven DM01 and after 250 miles it is working great. I would be fine with fewer options in the menu, so the changes they are making sound good to me. I definitely would want them to keep the ability to turn off the Max speed option though. Many of the other menu options are confusing, only because they didn't write a manual to explain what they do. However, I would rather ride than screw around with the menu. Does anyone know how the make the push assist option work? Mine just jerks a little and then stops. Thanx.
@@Lecia-lithium I didn't install a throttle, so I can only go as fast as my legs can spin a 42 x 11 gearing. My battery is a 17ah 52 volt. I carry an extra battery for rides longer than 30 miles. I use the extra power of the DM01 for climbing since many of my rides involve 3000 vertical feet of climbing.
@@Lecia-lithium I haven't had a problem after about 250 miles. High Voltage, link below, has run the similar but smaller DM02 to failure by extensive rides at high speeds. the M635 and M435 were actually really good after some tweaking with BESST. Stock settings were garbage. nothing new from bafang... the lack of a dedicated shift sensor plug however sucks. having to revert to the brake sensor plug to wire a shift sensor means the delay was longer than desired. other than that, very punchy, good torque sensor response and freaking silent as we already know the bbshd
Thanks for the news, Johnny. The big question is if the new bafang motors will allow 3rd party batteries or if they'll have to be official bafang batteries. Hoping for the former and not the latter! 🤞

I Johnny, is the can technology going to simplify the wiring management? I personally found that hiding (or arranging them cleanly)all those cables was the hardest part of the build. Michel Desjardins, Rimouski, Québec.
Thanks for the updates! Appreciate!
I wonder if the Bafang canbus move is why there hasn't been any motors available at Em3EV for some time.
So in other words run cyc from now on cool cool
Thank you for the updates, much appreciated.

I definitely will 🫡

This whole can bus thing will 100% most part be about locking people into their battereis only and limited tuning and so on........
As if it wouldn't be simple to hack and make it do whatever you wanted.

Definitely wait for the pudding (proof is in the pudding) from Bafang!
Glad I got my HD already

I don’t think so as it sounds like physically it’s going to be the same motor with all the same parts. We will see though

2271 is the spec for these lithium batteries.

Is the ul certified news and the UART to Can bus newa purely for the American market or is this a worldwide rollout all at once?
Can bus will almost garranteed be worldwide. Not UL Listed

What top speed can you get on the DM01. Also what battery have you got

So can't you just swap an old controller on the Bafang or better yet an aftermarket one ? Like VESC.
We will see….

Same here his website is down for me too.
@ what browser are you using?
@@JohnnyNerdOut Firefox on PC and Chrome on Android both saying Malicious website, I know it's not malicious because I used the site before.

Bafang directly confirmed with me that 3rd party batteries will work. Proprietary batteries will just show more info on the battery.
@@JohnnyNerdOutGreat news on that front, I can live with slightly less functionality for more choice in batteries
Highly doubt Bafang will discountinue UAR... maybe only for some area
Do you have creditable reference please?
Bafang

Well I guess this isn't a good time to get the dreaded 30 H error code on my BBSHD. Any ideas what to do about that error? Control or display?
Controller, display or wiring harness. Sometimes just reflashing the controller works too
That sucks!
