The game initially started without a map at all, When I played it this was my favorite part, The first time I did it it took me 10 hours to 100% everything, at that point I had memorized this castle like it was my friend's house. I felt the inclusion of the map actually took a lot of this away. And I feel like your criticism of asking for even more, while valid because it's how you feel, neglects the point of the "find an explorer" aspect of the game that I love. Although I suppose now that the map is here, It still can be improved upon by adding cardinal directions.
Totally valid points. In all honestly. I would just like an on/off for it or other forms of player assistance. If that wasn't the intended direction from the developer. Then I totally get it and respect it. Was just a small point I wanted to add for those who didn't want to memorize everything. Although I'm sure that might have been the goal and point of it all.
Great review, does a great job covering the good points and some of the shortcomings you might experience while playing. My first couple of playthroughs of Pseudoregalia featured a lot of backtracking as well but the way that the movement mechanics all tie into each other really kept me coming back for more.
Loved this game, definitely has some problems but I personally overlook all of it due to how immaculate the movement in the game is. The combat is pretty shallow but I love how you can throw your weapon and then parry it in the air to make it a crazy homing weapon. Also, if you don't mind 2d platformers, Super Skelemania is what I consider a 2d version of this game. The movement in that game gives the same feelings and it's also a very focused microvania.
It was definitely a fun game to play when I played it, ended up finishing it but got stuck a one point due to lacking the groundpound ability which I couldn't find which turned out to be in Sansa keep, I had simply missed it. It's good they added a map atleast, back when I played there wasn't a map at all so the backtracking was quite a frequent occurance, especially after sequence breaking a few of the levels, like I ended up going through the dungeon backwards so I left them from the entrance which required the ground pound to get into, so the block was still on the entryway and I didn't have the ability to break it since I missed the ability as mentioned previously. Overall a pretty fun game with a great movement system.
This exact issue of going into an area backwards. Happened to me twice. Which caused me go double back through them again the correct way. The addition of the map is what allowed me to complete the game. Without that I might have just put it down lol. Still a great game. But has some moments of frustration along the way.
