As a literature grad who similarly replays the small handful of Donna Tartt interviews on UA-cam-especially the one held at the John Adams Institute in 1993 (so good! I have it on repeat constantly) which sent me into rabbit holes of research on Euripides’ tragedies, Bennington College, T.S. Eliot, among other things-it’s no surprise UA-cam recommended your channel. It’s nice to know there’s someone else out there who is “nothing in their soul if not obsessive” -at least when it comes to our lord and literary savior, Donna Tartt.
I love your comment hahah--amen to obsession. I'll have to give the john adams one another listen, I usually watch the others because i like to see donna🫣 --my favorite is the 1992 interview

Favorite books are TSH (duh) and Lolita. Babel by RF Kuang and Beautiful Little Fools by Jillian Cantor were both in my top 5 of last year. Beautiful Little Fools is a Gatsby-adjacent story about his murder, and Babel is beautiful written and such a compelling story. Highly recommend!
Hi Charles, it would be really interesting (for me at least) if you tier- ranked poe's short stories :) I don't watch booktube that much but I like your channel.
Hard to say my favorites of all time but my favorites from this year are Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, Eileen by Otessa Moshfegh, and The Novelist by Jordan Castro Editing to say I love this channel and so glad I found you!! You remind me of Shawn McComb who’s one of my favs…
I liked your take on Brideshead Revisited!! I only just read it half a year ago but you made me want to go back and reread it already! it instantly became a favorite for me, those characters were just so compelling. you really get deeply invested in them. also thanks for recommending Howards End, because I've been wanting to get into Forster for a while now!
Thank you! I already want to reread it 😩😩 Forster is the best. If you want a shorter one first, Where angels fear to tread is just as good and might consider more similar themes (oops I forgot about the book when filming), but howards end is still def similar and it's great
Taken at the Flood and There is a Tide are the same Agatha Christie novel - the first is the UK edition, the second is the American edition. American publishers often changed her titles. Funerals are Fatal (US edition) is in fact After the Funeral (UK edition).
Well We have always lived in the castle is one of my favs but I’m guessing you’ll already be reading it in this vid (hope you liked it btw), soo I’ll say a few other favs: The Little Prince, Dune, My Brilliant Friend, The Book of Longings
Say less, my fave books are 'Annihilation' by Jeff Vandermeer, 'Dune' by Frank Herbert, 'The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo' by Taylor Jenkins Reid, 'The Knife of Never Letting Go' by Patrick Ness, 'Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close' by J. S. Foer and 2 other romanian books you've probably never heard about: 'Baltagul' (The Hatchet) by Mihail Sadoveanu and Otilia's Enigma by George Călinescu xx
haha found your channel and instantly subscribed bc the secret history is THAT book and you just reminded me I have to reread it soon, also it’s nice to find someone with similar taste in literature as me cuz it’s kinda hard on yt imo
Reporting for my subscriberly duty here: my favorite books at the moment are The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut and Coraline by Neil Gaiman. I have a few on my TBR (Secret history included) that I think may be overtaking them soon though.
you listing goldfinch and coraline with S5 make me want to give S5 a read...it's been on the tbr forever but I always here mixed reviews. I wan't to read coraline a bunch too
@@cs0p S5 was my favorite book for nearly the opposite reason I enjoyed The Goldfinch. My love for the Goldfinch came from a love for Donna's storytelling and character building. On the other hand, my love for S5 comes from a love for how its told. The story itself was mostly "uninteresting" to me, for lack of a better word, but was incredibly well-told, and surprisingly humorous. I highly recommend it.
Some of my fav books that aren't by donna tartt are wolf hall, phantom of the opera, the bluest eye, and a pale view of hills. Also did you know that donna tartt is a lana del rey fan?? Thats kinda iconic
no way that is icon shit. I got my dad wolf hall for his birthday! I want to read bluest eye so bad--it's been on the up next TBR list forever and my friends loooove it
While putting together a piece of furniture, I finished watching this video. I saw I hadn’t finished it. I love how you cap it off by giving your thoughts about how The Secret History compares to the books in this video. That summary was 🔥😊
I'm on a binge of your channel, I'm obsessed, and I'm not sorry. Since you've already read (and loved) TSH and The Little Friend (some of my favourites), these are some of my favourites that I think you might like: - A Dark-Adapted Eye by Barbara Vine - Cat On A Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams (so underrated) - Summerwater by Sarah Moss - Rivals by Jilly Cooper
Hey Charles, have you read any Ken Follet? I just finished the pillars of the earth, and I thought it was amazing while I was reading it (and it was LONG) but a week later I’m starting to think twice about it. Would like to hear your thoughts.
@@cs0p yeah, same. A lot of people I’ve seen have it as their absolute favorite novel. I even kind of felt that way after finishing it…for a couple days. The medieval setting and political machinations kind of remind me of Game of Thrones. And the actual plot of trying to build a Cathedral was much more engaging and interesting than I thought it would be, but if you ever pick it up, I assume you and I would find similar issues in a few of the characters/plot points. But if you’re a fan of just an engaging and solid story, I think it definitely delivers.
Fine! I’ll read the secret history! I’m 33 and just got into reading again this year. It’s been fun. So much of the television and movies I’ve seen recently have been so creatively bankrupt I knew it was time to start reading again.
My favourite books are Animal Farm, And Then There Were None, Ethan Frome, Wuthering Heights, and The Sicilian (by Mario Puzo). Charles, where is your video of Anna K? Because I couldn’t find it on your channel 🙁 I’m planning for it to be my next big read and I’m certain I’m going to love it! (So I sure hope it doesn’t disappoint 😅) I wanted to hear your take on it. Also, I haven’t read the book, but the film version of The Talented Mr Ripley is great and I recommend! ❤️
i put the video back up because you asked! i hope you enjoy it... a great list of favorites. im only now realizing how similar ethan frome and WH are in mood/atmosphere. ive never hear of the sicilian, i will do some digging. i hear gwenyth is in the film...i need ot watch it i love her
@@cs0p Omg. How kind you are 🥺 I didn’t expect you to put it back on the channel just because I asked 🥺 Thank you sooo much 🥺❤️❤️❤️ Anna K will definitely be my first read of the New Year ❤️ Yes, I love the dark, melancholy vibes of WH and EF; it’s so me, lol. The Sicilian is stunning. I’m always sad that everyone knows The Godfather but not The Sicilian, when it is the far superior novel imo. It started my love affair with that beautiful island, Sicily 😌 And it’s a book I have never forgotten; I re-read it every few years. Yes, the lovely Gwyneth is in TTMR. You must watch it because as well as being beautifully acted and atmospheric, it’s such a gorgeous visual treat! Again, thank you for the Anna K vid and Happy New Year! ❤️
Hi there. Really love your channel. I've read 'Brideshead' three times and looove that book! Lord Marchmain is a hoot. Michael Gambon (of Dumbledore fame) gave a great performance of him in the 2008 film version (even though that movie took liberties and isn't nearly as good as the 1980s British TV miniseries). Your other videos are creating more piles of books in my home btw.
I'd absolutely love to see you tier-rank all of Edgar Allen Poe! I loved EAP in high school, but hadn't picked up anything by him again until this year when I re-read "The Fall of the House of Usher", in preparation for reading the re-telling "What Moves the Dead" by T. Kingfisher. Loved them both, and it reignited my love for Poe.
His stories are still fresh and fun even now which is crazy to me. Usher is certainly a banger. Read more poe!! I'll brush the dust off my poe memories and add the video to the docket if I can figure out how to use the software 🙈
"What better reason to believe something than because it's a lovely idea" "Stories are deception. They're not real but we allow ourselves to be decieved to fall into the stories, because they're lovely ideas" 👌👌👌👌
4 of my favorites: 1. Red Rising Trilogy by Pierce Browm It was the first time I read a book that felt like I was actually in the world I was reading. Great world building, amazing characters, and it had me gripped me to my seat every time I picked it up. 2. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley This book impressed me so much because it’s so different than it’s modern adaptions/ references, it’s so much more thoughtful and emotional. The contrasts that Frankenstein kept making to himself and Paradise Lost really gave this book so much to analyze and admire. 3. Honor in the Dust by Gregg Jones I had to read this for high school a couple years ago and it made enough of an impact that I read it again in college. The author does such a great job depicting battles and views that America’s influential held at the time. Reading this was so emotional for me because I’m part Filipino and so many parts of the book had me seething with rage at the brutality that America was so comfortable inflicting because they believed the countries they were invading were inferior, savage, feral. Overall just acknowledging that this is a part of American history and it’s how America still operates today. 4. The Race Beat by Gene Roberts and Hank Klibanoff I also read this is high school and it’s about the Civil Rights movement through the eyes of the press. It was difficult at times to read because of the various editors and journalists that the book talks about but it was one of the first times that I felt that I finally grasped American History. So much of that has happened is still relevant today and I wish that everyone would read this. Sorry for the lengthy comment, just walking away from these books felt like I understood the world a little bit more :)
my favorite books are the secret history (obvi), interview with the vampire by anne rice, the twilight books (i think you can tell i love vampire novels) and the diary of anne frank is another favorite. have a great day charles !♡
Fav Books: abela by Berie Doherty, the gritterman by Orlando Weeks, A Thousand Mornings by Mary Oliver, the little friend, the salt path by Raynor Winn and Call the Midwife by by Jennifer Worth
my faves as of right now are The Great Gatsby, Lord of the Flies and The Picture of Dorian Gray :) also you're probably the only person that talks about The Secret History in a way that makes me want to read it lol (** stop this burp erasure, in fact make a compilation)
My favourite books of all time are all of the neapolitan novels, however I believe it's rather because of the fact that I grew up reading them and that they shaped my taste than because of the their quality
@@cs0p That's definitely good to know. I read them a long time ago and have been meaning to reread them for a while now but I was just so scared of not liking them as much as I did the first time. So that's very reassuring:)
Favorites of mine are, despite the secret history of course, in cold blood, east of eden, white nights, kafkas letters to milena, perfume by Süskind and first love by Turgenev.
get tf out that's a damn lineup. I love eden and cold blood. Turgenev is on the hit list for my russian lit foray 😏 perfume sounds like it could be incredible
My favourite books: Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll.
hey ! i just came across your channel and i immediately fell in love with your energy and vibe so i wanted to tell you that BUT ALSO tell you about my favorite books because it would also help me narrow them down: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Heartstopper, The House in the Cerulean Sea, Solitaire
You speaking of 1984 and Animal Farm made me think of PKD's The Man in the High Castle.. I haven't read it yet but I did watch the mini series many years ago. Gave me the same kind of creepy feeling as V for Vendetta.. so of course, can't wait to read it.
I'm norwegian and so are many of my favrite books, so you probably never heard of them. But I also love Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, The shaddow of the wind, Lolita, Who killed my father by Édouard Louis, and ofc all of the Harry Potter books :)))
favorite books: this is how you lose the time war, paul takes the form of a mortal girl, bonjour tristesse and these violent delights (micah nemerever)
I who have never known men is my favourite book of all time. One thing I'd say is that if you are going to read it, is to not look up any synopsis cause one I read spoiled a big part of the book
ok ok ok I will go in blind. I hate when a synopsis spoils the book-- they always give too damn much away. I tend to bulk buy books and forget the synopsis and trust I liked it when I pick it up to read from my shelf
favs: book thief, liar's gospel, the secret history, the diary of a young girl, little women, les miserables (abridged. the unabridged is painful. like, an entirely different book).
Abridged HAHAH understandable--that book is a BRICK. It scares me more than any other book I've come across. I need to read the book thief!! And I low key loved the little women movie with florence pugh
Okay... be jealous... all my Donna Tartt books are signed. That was my flex (the only one I have). It is the end of a ten year cycle, so expectations are high for a Donna Tarrt announcement.
favorite books; Piranesi by Susanna Clarke (drives you insane, fantastic plot, psychologically illegal world-building, fantasy elements, gets really deep i cried, lovable mc), Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell (i love a sad story and the ending is so well written, currently reading The Marriage Portrait by her and its good too but she uses the not like other girls superiority chosen-one-vibe trope in both books and that gets annoying)
My faves are: My Heavenly Favorite by Marieke Lucas Rijneveld (you could call it a Dutch take on Lolita), The First Bad Man by Miranda July and Life or Theatre by Charlotte Salomon
mmmm m mm m I need to read lolita!! these books sound hot

Genuinely was looking forward to this video and you delivered. 💅 Some favorite books: Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak, The Book Thief by the same dude, The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness, and The Name of the Wind by Patrick Ness. All of these are pretty chunky, but The Knife of Never Letting go is a fairly quick read given the writing style and fast pace. 😎

@@cs0p just realized that all the books I recommend follow children, which you mentioned you don't like. 👀 my baaad. Soo some other recommendations that don't follow children: Death with Interruptions by Jose Saramago, Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin, and Vicious by VE Schwab (warning, there is A child in that one). What i will say is that the books i recommended before are still excellent (in my humble correct opinion).

@@cs0p you could do a video titled "Can the children redeem themselves? Reading books about kids for a week" hahaha. Giovannis Room is a special book, and since you enjoyed Brideshead, I think you'll enjoy it. Not that it's similar in plot, but there was something intangible about it - maybe the atmosphere - that reminded me of Brideshead. The book thief is fantastic - and event though it's set during WWII, it doesn't actually follow any soldiers so I wouldn't necessarily consider it a war novel. It used to be my favorite book of all time, but when Zusak came out with Bridge of Clay, that one took top spot.
Some of my fav books gotta be Turtles all the way down, the book thief, the count of monte cristo, frankenstein, thr great gatsby, crime and punishment, the silent patient,,

my fav books besides the secret history obv would be : perfume by Suskind, the sense of an ending by Barnes, nausea by Sartre, and many more but i have to stop here or else i never Will ahah. And looove your content btw.
A book that reminds me of the Secret History is The Wishing Game by Patrick Redmond. Not quite the same, more thriller/horror themed but still a dark academia vibe. Kind of an obscure and forgotten book but worth a read!
the book thief, anything by celeste ng, and also the night circus are some of my faves (edited: haven’t read celeste ng’s newest book though but really want to!)
while i do feel like we have somewhat similar tastes regarding books (in the sense of, some similar favorites of all time), i don’t know how you’d feel about the books i love, seeing as how you frequently mention hating writing that feels antiquated commonly found within classic literature. whereas, i love a very “baroque” writing style (as in flowery, ornate, highly descriptive, that is perhaps the slightest bit pretentious). but if you are interested, my two favorite classic novels of all time are a tale of two cities by dickens and lolita by nabokov.
hmmmm i don't mind ornate writing if i would like the book otherwise (e.g. howards end). Usually when flowery writing pisses me off, I wouldnt like the book anyway. I need to get to 2 cities and lolita!!
0:44 Ight mate, I have different favorite books for different types of stuff cause my all time favorite is niece Favorite books for getting out a reading slump: Normal People Siddartha Animal farm The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe Favorite books for disturbing philosophy The road Lord of the flies Heart of Darkness Favorite books about and for mentally deteriorating women: My dark Vanessa The bell jar Garden of earthly bodies The Friend All time favorite novel: Death Note: L: Change The World So I know these are extremely normal categories and novels to read so enjoy putting them in your video and reading them if you haven’t ;)))))
ah, Le Grand Meaulnes 🖤 a couple recos for dark relational vibes sometimes w/ some academia in the mix: The Days of Abandonment / The Lost Daughter / Neapolitan novels (Elena Ferrante), The Latinist (Mark Prins), Real Life / Filthy Animals (Brandon Taylor), Sula (Toni Morrison), The Door (Magda Szabó), The Coming Bad Days (Sarah Bernstein). re Russian lit, have you gotten into Nabokov?
SOPHIE I thought of you when I was trying to pronounce Le grand 🙈 I'm reading days of abandonment soon!! I haven't done nabokov yet, I was gonna go vaguely chronologically and I'm still on dosty, but I might switch it up and skip to lolita. Have you? Do you like him?
@@cs0p ha ha I’m glad (?) Klune, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, The Shining by Stephen King, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, and If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio (similar to The Secret History in many ways, although TSH is still better). I'm also in the process of reading Babel by R. F. Kuang, which seems awesome so far.

The silent patient is love/hate read for me. Like I enjoy the book but at the same time want to yell at everyone in the book. I still think about that book .
My favorite books are actually The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt( I think I commented this on another vid of yours but I preferred it to TSH a lot) imo it’s the way better novel of hers compared to TSH, that didn’t quite make it to my favorites list -also “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini (better than the kite runner though I still enjoyed that so idk if you’d like it) -my year of rest and relaxation by otessa moshfegh -the perks of being a wallflower obvi -the astonishing color of after by Emily x r pan - the razors edge by somerset maughan

I discovered your videos these days and I'm so obsessed with them ❤
aw thank you!! 🥺
Highly recommend!
mmmmm I've heard sexy good things about babel--I need to give gatsby a reread! its been a minute🫣
Pleading + begging + praying for a The Master & Margarita mention of any kind. So basic but an all time fav
I BOUGHT THIS JUST A SEC AGO 👀👀
Hi Charles, it would be really interesting (for me at least) if you tier- ranked poe's short stories :) I don't watch booktube that much but I like your channel.
ok ok good. Noted. I need to figure out the software! Thank you for watching! :)
Hard to say my favorites of all time but my favorites from this year are Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, Eileen by Otessa Moshfegh, and The Novelist by Jordan Castro
Editing to say I love this channel and so glad I found you!! You remind me of Shawn McComb who’s one of my favs…
Thank you! 🫶🫣😝 I'm glad you're enjoying the channel
This was a really well-done video!!!
🫣🥺 I'm happy I could make you laugh and I'm glad a fellow DT fanatic enjoyed the video ;)
This video is a lovely idea. Thank you, Charles!
of course.
If you want a shorter one first, Where angels fear to tread is just as good and might consider more similar themes (oops I forgot about the book when filming), but howards end is still def similar and it's great
@@cs0p turns out one of my local libraries has both so hopefully soon I can give them a read!
Taken at the Flood and There is a Tide are the same Agatha Christie novel - the first is the UK edition, the second is the American edition. American publishers often changed her titles. Funerals are Fatal (US edition) is in fact After the Funeral (UK edition).
interesting interesting that does make sense
Loved your comparison analysis.
Thank you!!
Well We have always lived in the castle is one of my favs but I’m guessing you’ll already be reading it in this vid (hope you liked it btw), soo I’ll say a few other favs: The Little Prince, Dune, My Brilliant Friend, The Book of Longings
I looove My brilliant friend. I need to pick up the second one. I loved aspects of Castle and am pumped to pick up more Jackson
S. Foer and 2 other romanian books you've probably never heard about: 'Baltagul' (The Hatchet) by Mihail Sadoveanu and Otilia's Enigma by George Călinescu xx
mmmmmm I need to read more sci fi and dune sounds like a fun place 🫣
also stan Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close!!! an incredible reading experience that breaks conventions!
@@nathansnook truly, it's one of the few books I got chills on the most while reading
haha found your channel and instantly subscribed bc the secret history is THAT book and you just reminded me I have to reread it soon, also it’s nice to find someone with similar taste in literature as me cuz it’s kinda hard on yt imo
Thank you!! I'm glad we have similar tastes ;) I need to reread it too!
just discovered your channel and i’m eating up all this content omg
munch munch ;) thank you
Reporting for my subscriberly duty here: my favorite books at the moment are The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut and Coraline by Neil Gaiman. I have a few on my TBR (Secret history included) that I think may be overtaking them soon though.
Yes fellow The Goldfinch fan, so underrated
you listing goldfinch and coraline with S5 make me want to give S5 a read...it's been on the tbr forever but I always here mixed reviews.
That summary was 🔥😊
thanks ;) I hope your furniture didn't turn out a wobbly mess like all mine 💀
Well......🤔
I'm on a binge of your channel, I'm obsessed, and I'm not sorry.
Since you've already read (and loved) TSH and The Little Friend (some of my favourites), these are some of my favourites that I think you might like:
- A Dark-Adapted Eye by Barbara Vine
- Cat On A Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams (so underrated)
- Summerwater by Sarah Moss
- Rivals by Jilly Cooper
Thank you!! I will check out the recs ;)
a dark adapted eye looks good asf...
@@cs0p it's a masterpiece.
Hey Charles, have you read any Ken Follet? I just finished the pillars of the earth, and I thought it was amazing while I was reading it (and it was LONG) but a week later I’m starting to think twice about it. Would like to hear your thoughts.
i swear ive seen that book everywhere, but no ive never read it.. maybe ill pick it up to see what the fuss is about
@@cs0p yeah, same.
“I think it kinda looks like me I think it’s hot” 😭😭😭
Fine! I’ll read the secret history! I’m 33 and just got into reading again this year. It’s been fun. So much of the television and movies I’ve seen recently have been so creatively bankrupt I knew it was time to start reading again.
amen to the creative bankruptcy in other media forms. i hope you have fun with the secret history 👀
@@cs0p I’ll let you know, I’ll probably start it next week!
@@BookLover19 i hope you enjoy it ;) happy new year!!
Your other videos are creating more piles of books in my home btw.
thank you!! i dont know how i always forget there are usually movie adaptations of popular older books. i have added the film to my letterbox...
I’m glad I found your channel. I love your humor!
Edit: and I also hate The Kite Runner.
thank god you found the channel-I’ve never met anyone else who hates it 💀
"What better reason to believe something than because it's a lovely idea"
"Stories are deception. They're not real but we allow ourselves to be decieved to fall into the stories, because they're lovely ideas"

4 of my favorites:
1. Red Rising Trilogy by Pierce Browm
It was the first time I read a book that felt like I was actually in the world I was reading. Great world building, amazing characters, and it had me gripped me to my seat every time I picked it up.
2. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
This book impressed me so much because it’s so different than it’s modern adaptions/ references, it’s so much more thoughtful and emotional. The contrasts that Frankenstein kept making to himself and Paradise Lost really gave this book so much to analyze and admire.
3. Honor in the Dust by Gregg Jones
I had to read this for high school a couple years ago and it made enough of an impact that I read it again in college.
4. The Race Beat by Gene Roberts and Hank Klibanoff
I also read this is high school and it’s about the Civil Rights movement through the eyes of the press.
I love a lengthy comment! thank you for the recs, I really need to get to franky!!
my favorite books are the secret history (obvi), interview with the vampire by anne rice, the twilight books (i think you can tell i love vampire novels) and the diary of anne frank is another favorite. have a great day charles !♡
aw thank you! Have a good day to you too ;) I will add the anne rice book to my tbr, I think I've seen clips of the movie
Fav Books: abela by Berie Doherty, the gritterman by Orlando Weeks, A Thousand Mornings by Mary Oliver, the little friend, the salt path by Raynor Winn and Call the Midwife by by Jennifer Worth
noted noted thank yoo
I really love Beyond the Pale by Elana Dykewomon, Maurice by E. M Forster and Vellum by Hal Duncan!
mrs dalloway is an all time fav of mine, i read 2-3 years ago and it’s still stuck with me
I've been meaning to read this for years now 🫣--I need to get to Woolf!
you’re adorable 😂 I’m here for the petty takes. glad I subscribed. I’m quarter of the way through my first read of the secret history ..!!
thank you! lol the petty takes, I can't help it. Tell me if you love it!! Unsubscribe if you dont 😤
my faves as of right now are The Great Gatsby, Lord of the Flies and The Picture of Dorian Gray :) also you're probably the only person that talks about The Secret History in a way that makes me want to read it lol (** stop this burp erasure, in fact make a compilation)
the BURPS AHHAHA secret history is so worthy of the hype I can't even pretend I like other niche books more--dorian is definitely due for a reread
My favourite books of all time are all of the neapolitan novels, however I believe it's rather because of the fact that I grew up reading them and that they shaped my taste than because of the their quality
no the quality of those books is great you have great taste (so far as it concerns the first two bc those are the only ones ive read so far)
@@cs0p But I should warn you about parfum. It's quite gruesome and the ending is really something
My favourite books: Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll.
icon books damn--I love oscar and agatha--I've been meaning to read the last two...👀

hey ! i just came across your channel and i immediately fell in love with your energy and vibe so i wanted to tell you that BUT ALSO tell you about my favorite books because it would also help me narrow them down: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Heartstopper, The House in the Cerulean Sea, Solitaire

Coming back to rewatch this after finishing tsh >>
You speaking of 1984 and Animal Farm made me think of PKD's The Man in the High Castle.. I haven't read it yet but I did watch the mini series many years ago. Gave me the same kind of creepy feeling as V for Vendetta.. so of course, can't wait to read it.
oooo I will have to check the book out--I had a blast with orwell

Shadow of the wind is SO good!! All time favorite of mine also. 😊
Hi norway! I need to get to lolita ASAP! I can't believe I haven't read it yet. I've also heard great great things about shadow of the wind
read written on the body by Jeanette Winterson! only 190 pages but the best writing ever. very poetic.

Just go to the zoo and check out the chimp exhibit. And then play a burp track. That's pretty much the magic behind my mediocrity
favorite books: this is how you lose the time war, paul takes the form of a mortal girl, bonjour tristesse and these violent delights (micah nemerever)
mmmmm these sound hot hot hot
NO ABSOLUTE WAY 😭😭 I dream about getting my books signed--that is a major flex hahaha--and the ten years I know!! I'm on the fritz waiting
i love your vibde

I think I'm being a bit dramatic, but it was truly a shock to hear there are stirrings. If it actually comes out tomorrow...
favorite books;
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke (drives you insane, fantastic plot, psychologically illegal world-building, fantasy elements, gets really deep i cried, lovable mc),
Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell (i love a sad story and the ending is so well written, currently reading The Marriage Portrait by her and its good too but she uses the not like other girls superiority chosen-one-vibe trope in both books and that gets annoying)
!! I need to read piranesi this fall. I’ve had it since it came out 😭

Genuinely was looking forward to this video and you delivered. 💅
Some favorite books: Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak, The Book Thief by the same dude, The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness, and The Name of the Wind by Patrick Ness.
All of these are pretty chunky, but The Knife of Never Letting go is a fairly quick read given the writing style and fast pace. 😎
good good good I'm glad I delivered ;) I don't mind a fast paced chunky baby! I've been meaning to read the book thief since middle school 💀
@ lol I don't minnnnd the occasional one hahaha and I'm always open! "warning" HAHA --I have been meaning to read Giovannis tho. I'm sure the child books are great too hahaha I still want to pick up the book thief some time 😛
@@cs0p you could do a video titled "Can the children redeem themselves? Reading books about kids for a week" hahaha. Giovannis Room is a special book, and since you enjoyed Brideshead, I think you'll enjoy it. Not that it's similar in plot, but there was something intangible about it - maybe the atmosphere - that reminded me of Brideshead. The book thief is fantastic - and event though it's set during WWII, it doesn't actually follow any soldiers so I wouldn't necessarily consider it a war novel. It used to be my favorite book of all time, but when Zusak came out with Bridge of Clay, that one took top spot.
@ mmmmm! That would be a fun video--I'll add it to the docket. I need to read zusak if you love him this much!! haha
Some of my fav books gotta be Turtles all the way down, the book thief, the count of monte cristo, frankenstein, thr great gatsby, crime and punishment, the silent patient,,
I need to finish crime and p!! Frankenstein is also on the hit list. I can't imagine ever finishing count becuase of how long it is 🫣

A book that reminds me of the Secret History is The Wishing Game by Patrick Redmond. Not quite the same, more thriller/horror themed but still a dark academia vibe. Kind of an obscure and forgotten book but worth a read!

My favourite books are TSH, The Night Circus, Less, Sonny's Blues, The Lies of Locke Lamora, Charming As A Verb
Googling donna is my third favorite past time
while i do feel like we have somewhat similar tastes regarding books (in the sense of, some similar favorites of all time), i don’t know how you’d feel about the books i love, seeing as how you frequently mention hating writing that feels antiquated commonly found within classic literature. whereas, i love a very “baroque” writing style (as in flowery, ornate, highly descriptive, that is perhaps the slightest bit pretentious). but if you are interested, my two favorite classic novels of all time are a tale of two cities by dickens and lolita by nabokov.
hmmmm i don't mind ornate writing if i would like the book otherwise (e.g. howards end). Usually when flowery writing pisses me off, I wouldnt like the book anyway. I need to get to 2 cities and lolita!!
