5 Reasons why Abuja Is A Great City.
Abuja is the capital and eighth most populous city in Nigeria. Located in the centre of the country within the Federal Capital Territory, it is a planned city built mainly in the 1980s based on a master plan by Japanese architect KenzoTange. It replaced Lagos, the country's most populous city, as the capital on December 12, 1991.
As of 2022, the city is experiencing an annual growth of at least 35%, retaining its position as the fastest-growing city on the African continent and one of the fastest-growing in the world. As of 2022, the metropolitan area of Abuja is estimated at six million people, placing it behind only Lagos as the most populous metro area in Nigeria.
Abuja is the headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the regional headquarters of OPEC.
1. It's organized
The master plan for Abuja defined the general structure and major design elements of the city that are now visible. More detailed design of the central areas of the capital, particularly its monumental core, was accomplished by Japanese architect KenzoTange. What I like about Abuja is that most of the buildings are very beautiful and modern looking. I think it's because most of them have been built recently. When I look at Abuja, I see a model city of what every African city should aspire to be; one that is clean, modern, and well organized.
2. Great roads.
As a foreigner, I have to acknowledge that Abuja has some of the best roads I have seen in Africa. They are well marked, and not once have I seen any potholes. The city is well connected, and if you own a car, it will be a pleasure to drive around as there are no traffic jams. Abuja is linked to Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue and Northeast Nigeria by the A234 Federal Highway, which starts from the city as the Goodluck Jonathan expressway, some portions of which are still under construction. A direct highway link to Minna in Niger State is still under construction. The A2 expressway links Abuja with Kaduna in the north and Lokoja in the south. There are also other highway links with the outlying regions, such as that linking the suburb of DutseAlhaji with the Lower Usuma and Gurara Dams, which supply water to the city.
3. Warm Weather
I guess Abuja has better weather than Lagos. It can get hot sometimes, but most of the time, the weather is very tolerable and comfortable. In the dry season, daytime temperatures can soar to as high as 40 °C and nighttime temperatures can dip to 12 °C Even the chilliest nights can be followed by daytime temperatures well above 30 °C. The high altitudes and undulating terrain act as a moderating influence on the weather of the territory.
4. It's clean.
Abuja is also one of the cleanest cities in Africa and definitely one of the cleanest in Nigeria. You cannot compare it to Lagos. The areas around the CBD are spotlessly clean. However, the satellite towns cropping up around the city are eroding this reputation, but efforts are being made to clear them. In most of Abuja, you will not see litter on the streets or the numerous shack shops that are an eyesore in most African cities. The sidewalks are clean and I can imagine it would be a pleasure for the pedestrians. Kudos Abuja.
5. Full of Attractions.
Abuja is home to several parks and green areas, with the largest one being Millennium Park. Another open area park is located in LifecampGwarimpa, near the residence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The park is located on a slightly raised hilltop that contains sports facilities like basketball and badminton courts. Central Park Enjoy a grand time alone or with your family in this 500-acre (202.3-hectare) park, situated in the heart of Abuja. From picnics at the green spots to hiking, the outdoor fans will love it at Usuma Lower Dam, located in the UshafaBwari Area, some minutes’ drive from the capital. It is the fifth-largest human-made lake globally, and it boasts the biggest hydropower plant in West Africa, which serves the metropolis with electricity and water.
Nigeria's Magical Park is Nigeria’s Disneyland and the first and largest amusement park in the country. Whether you’re a Muslim faithful or not, seeing the elegant Nigerian National Mosque, situated on Independence Avenue, is a must. The natural scene combined with urbanization makes the Jabi Lake area, close to the city’s center, a beauty to behold.
Other places you can enjoy visiting in Abuja are the Abuja National Mosque, Jabi Lake Mall, Bature Brewery, Jabi Lake, Millennium Park and many others.

I am always surprised when l hear and see nigerians talk about lagos, lagos, l think to myself Abuja is a much better city why is nobody talking about that?
Because Abuja is boring
I grew up here in Phase One of the Federal Capital City in Abuja which is mostly shown in this video. Just to say the truth, Abuja people don't care so much about making noise or creating unnecessary publicity, and I can confirm that some very ignorant people who don't know how to relax in very nice places will scream that Abuja is boring. They think you must be on the road throwing parties to proof a city is lively. Abuja is boring to them, yet all their ladies leave for Abuja lol. Well it's not perfect, but if you want peace and tranquility, Abuja is the place.
If Nigerian politicians were not, and are not endemically corrupt, Nigeria by now would be one of the richest and most industrialised countries in the world because of its oil and gas, agriculture, minerals, human capital, entreprenuership. Nigeria's oil has the best and highest quality in the world because it contains low sulphur content, which makes it very easy and cheap to refine. That is why it is called Sweet Crude.

I'd pick it over Lagos any day of the year. Although Lagos has more fun places and job opportunities. it is the most stressful city to live in Nigeria.

I remember when I was young, Abuja was developing...I remember it was just a pass by town. Nothing much to see and that was in the early 90s when I was fourteen years old. The it towns then were kaduna, Jos, Bendel state Lagos and I loved south south regions. Abuja became Nigeria’s capital in the 90s so it was gradually developing with roads and the few traffic lights I remember. 😂 Abuja was created or in development by the murtala Muhammad era so it was planned years ago in the 70s.

Oh my word, being in the car with you was like riding with my daughter, she speeds and stops short when cars ahead of us have come to a stop. Are there any speed limits because everyone was going so fast, even faster than you ! I missed a lot of the surroundings because I was too busy thinking we were going to crash or someone else was going to crash. But what I did observe was much like anywhere in America. Very modern and so unlike the areas that are always portrayed on tv. Many of the reality shows, take us to undeveloped places in Africa where there are no pavements or modern facilities. It’s really great seeing a part of Nigeria that looks like any other modem country in the world.

Nigeria has many modern and beautiful cities and towns- Calabar, Port Harcourt, Uyo, Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Enugu, Asaba, Owerri and so many others.
Western media just loves to portray Nigeria and Africa as dirt poor, dusty, zero infrastructure, a jungle and more....that's why when foreigners come to Africa they are shocked at what they see which is totally different from media portrayal

@@BeninMamiWata Abuja isn't like any city you have been in, in Africa, in terms of organization, every single district is equipped with all social amenities, so you can't see people rushing to one particular place for single reasons, it's so clean and people behave themselves....I've seen Street shops in Kigali, you can't find one in Abuja except in areas they're designated to be. Abuja will speak for her self to you when you visit, thank you.

ABJ is definitely more chilled and organised than Lagos. So I guess it all depends on what you want. I need the ocean 😅. So ABJ can't be my permanent abode but definitely high on the list of pleasant places to live in Nigeria

In a way you are right but a city doesn't need skyscrapers to be beautiful but it's better to have everything both skyscrapers and other buildings. Abuja has some high rise buildings in the Central Business District but we need more and fortunately Abuja Centenary City is being built with a lot of skyscrappers and when they are done with it, Abuja will be like Dubai or Shenzhen in China.

Reason for weather differences btwn Lagos and Abuja is cos Lagos is a coastal city surrounded on most sides by water so it gets humid esp during dry season from December to March;
But weather gets cooler during rainy season which lasts 7/8 months.
Abuja is located in the middle of the country surrounded by hills, huge rocks and lots of green spaces so weather is cool most times

Most Nigerians can’t afford Abuja , that’s why
I hear people say the roads aren't pedestrian friendly....because they have no idea....the pedestrian track is separated by a lone field....which prevent people coming close to the road.

The location is pleasant, but the driving habits of some drivers are questionable. I observed only two vehicles that actually used their turn signals. Additionally, I am uncertain whether it is permissible to make a right turn from the middle lane.
I understand the need to project a positive narrative about Africa. Yet I feel for this to truly work it has to be authentic and not based on whitewashing. Doing that is just as bad as negative press about Africa.
Abuja is not an organised city. Yes it was well planned and has a master plan. But most of those plans had been abandoned and many will say the plans were not designed to make Abuja inclusive.
Talk of basic infrastructure. For a planned city most of Abuja lacks access to portable water. I have been living in the city since 2008 and own 2 homes. Less than 20% of Abuja city is on the water grid. Most resort to drilling their own deep water well or resort to buying water in buckets.
There is also no central sewage system. Less than 10% of the city has properly planned sewage system and none of those are connected city wide but rather in clusters . The majority of homes build their own earth pit as septic tanks.
The city lacks a mass transit transportation system. You either own a car or use unregulated taxi where people are cramped into old beaten cars in terrible conditions.
Infrastructure outside of the major popular districts where most of the growth is happening is appalling. You talk of not seeing potholes. Please visit lugbe, dawaki, kubwa, lokogoma, Karimu to mention a few.
Yes Abuja is beautiful, has great infrastructure and offers a good quality of life. But this is in comparison to other cities in Nigeria like Lagos or Port Harcourt. It tells more how deployable most Nigerian cities are than anything. When bench marked against cities of the world Abuja doesn't hold very well.
I agree with you in some areas, but as a Town Planner, I will also tell you that you are not completely correct. What most people do not know is that there is a Federal Capital City in the context of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, which is also in the context of the Federal Capital Territory or Abuja itself. The FCC is the actual area that has the provisions of the Abuja Master plan from Phase One to Phase Five right now which was never abandoned, and is still being built on a daily basis. I lived in Wuse for more than 30 years, and I can confirm that there is a central system for both drainages, sullages and sewages, along with pipe born water in the developed phases of the FCC. Also note that Area Councils outside AMAC have a different development plan from the FCC itself, and that's why the value of real estate in these places differ. Development is actually not fast enough because of the crop of lazy and corrupt FCT ministers we've had after El Rufia, but Wike is working right now and I hope we have more people to continue in greater measures.

I'm Nigerian, but I'm not going to act like the title of this video is true because.
1-I never travelled to anywhere else in africa outside my country, so to say it's better would be like saying my family is the best one in the world.
2-There are other africans cities like Kigali the rest that comes up frequently in the media(outside Nigeria) in a positive light, yet the only Nigerian city that's hyped up the most is Lagos, and it's definitely not cleaner.
3-If we really want to be pro unites africa, we have to be honest of each or individual strengths and weaknesses. This is why when I hear other Nigerians brag about the country having this and that, I don't get involved, because if it was so, we won't even need to be in countries like India for example.
Abuja is more of an estate than a city
You forget to say there's a dps refugee camp in abuja too.
