- Feb.11 -- Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is grilled by Representative Katie Porter, a California Democrat, during his semi-annual congressional testimony Tuesday for his attendance at a party thrown by Amazon.com Inc. Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos last month.
Can you imagine if every member of Congress was as intelligent and honorable as Katie Porter? Think how strong America would be. America needs more like her. 🇺🇸

Not gonna lie, I never thought I’d be a fan of a politician
There are, always has been and always will be decent politicians out there but many tend to be lower profile and working behind the scenes for the benefit of others, as opposed to trying to further their own careers.
The former being something Bernie Sanders has been doing for years but those in positions of power then set out to destroy the Bernies and Katie Porters of this world once they start to get recognition for their efforts. And mainly because they do not want anyone changing things for the better for the average person.
The ultimate irony being many low information, average people voted for Trump thinking he would offer a change and look after them, when in reality all he was ever going to do and actually did was fuck them over even more than career politicians, at their expense and to the benefit of his own already privileged and wealthy kind.
And then Trump has the front to label others as the elite whilst being born into privilege and wealth and then his low information base fall for it, just as long as they buy into his demonising Johnny Foreigner.
Me too, and i hate politics, and i dont vote. But i think she would persuade me to vote.

Everything is politics. That's why we should all vote though I wouldn't make it compulsory like Australia. I'm a member of the SNP - currently in power in the Scottish Parliament. In a local election some years ago our candidate, in a local election, won (after several recounts) by one vote and became a councillor. So one person's vote can make a difference.

@@duncanbryson1167 , I'm Australian and I really like the way we are forced to vote here in Oz. I think that what comes for that is that there has to be an appeal from both sides of politics to all of the citizens, which tends to drive them closer to the centre rather than the fringes. I'd like to say that this is a sure fire bet for better political discourse, but, having checked out where it is mandatory is not a great indicator of successful countries. What I think would happen in the USA is that the extremes of both your parties would need to be tempered ... something that the rest of the world would really cheer for. BTW, I love Katie - she certainly skewers those who get her ire due to protectionism, partisanship or poor credibility. Stay safe in these challenging COVID times

Um, we've nothing but career politicians to choose from. We have the ability to elect locally. The presidential election is done through the electoral college. We are a people of zero definitive say. Corporate lobbyists are the majority shaping policy. Enlighten us. What gear might we need to escape this norm?

It’s a private party in his own home, so there are 30 maybe 50 people he has close relationships with.
It’s not a gala or something he couldn’t be in control of, but an intimate meeting to talk to his folks and (as Mr. D. said) gather some favours or build up certain relationships and contracts...

Would he be just as corrupt if his son wanted to be a mechanic and he helped him get a part time job at his buddy's garage during high school? Katie just showed how low blow she will go. Dem or Republican - she still acts dirty by implying Powell was being influenced by a bunch of assumed rich people instead of mechanics.
@@Pipping-Hot Does it make it right either way? Nepotism and exchanges of favors at any level destroys upward mobility and any hope of merit based promotion. Exposing it is the key to if not stopping it, quelling it.

I do not hold my mechanic to the same standard as I would expect the chair of the federal reserve to be held to. My mechanic can go out and party with whomever he wants as long as he can fix my car. If the chair of the federal reserve is partying with whomever they feel like it gives the impression of impropriety. Particularly when you combine it with his dodgy answers here. For example when she asked if someone like Jeff Bezos could benefit from being able to bend his ear. The answer is a resounding yes. To say "I don't know." is nothing short of dishonest. His entire testimony was nothing short of dishonest.

I have watched many Congressional hearings and usually, the people doing the questioning either appear to have no interest in actually getting to the truth or are such amateurs that they are incapable of getting to the truth. She set up the questioning extremely well and deserves credit for doing a great job!
