  • How to keep your house cool in a Heatwave. Keeping your Thai house cool
    Ways to keep cool and secure your property. In these very hot summer months in Thailand where the temperature gets high, thinking of ways to get rid of that built up heat, this is my addition to my get the house cooler without AC. Our electric bill even in summer is below 700 Baht. How you may ask, we do not use the aircon much, maybe an hour or so on an evening to cool the living room. We don't have aircon in the bedroom and only use fans to cool the room, we use the fans in the living room and bedroom. Is it warm, yes it is but I have gotten used to it now and can sleep without the aircon.
    Insulation of the house is important, having moving air is also key in getting a cooler house.

    You have the right idea with the extractor fan Les but you need a larger one. My whole house fan in Texas is 36” in diameter with metal blades, belt driven and two speeds. It moves an astounding amount of air yet is very quiet and I can choose which windows to open to direct the flow. When we buy or build in Thailand it will be the first thing on my list. We unfortunately have central air in the west but in Thailand using mini splits you have the additional benefit of being able to aircon one or two rooms and use the fan to remove heat from the attic and cool the rest of the house. You just have to be sure you have enough soffit and or ridge venting in the attic to handle to air volume. Cheers

    Every video won’t appeal to everybody, but this one is a reminder that AC is not always the answer, fans and heat removal to me is the way to go,

      Thanks for that, I agree heat removal is the key to many things, remove that excess heat to keep running costs down for your aircon. I must say we have had the back door open every day since we fitted the ventilation door, it works a treat, you can feel the difference in the ambient heat, we just returned from a few days away so heat built up inside the house, an hour later much cooler. I have a house in Malaysia so I know the feeling!
    One thing I am looking at doing is having the loft insulated. This may sound counter intuitive but it really helps.
    I was recently in Lankawi and they tend to use metal sheets for the roofs, which is the worst, anyway, a local trend now in restaurants is to put the garden water sprinkler on the roof to cool it down.
    We have always been taught that heat rises but it can also radiate down from a hot ceiling.
    If you ever go into a thatched building you will feel it is cooler, it is the oldest insulation known to man!

    I like the easy install of it Les. We have security doors and window shutters all through the house here in Australia to create a great breeze right through the house. It saves a fortune because we don't need to have the air con on for most of the year or the fans. Its amazing how much power air con uses, I checked it out this summer, without air con we use about 15kw a day, with it, it goes to 45kw a day

      Hi thanks for the comment, we try not to use the aircon but if we do it's only for an hour or so to cool the living room down at night, We are strong believers of the humble fan, this saves a fortune in electricity and does the job for us. We don't use aircon in the bedroom and only use two fans for cooling, even in this heatwave we manage on just the fans. 🙏😀 Getting the warm air out of the house is the key to cheaper running costs.

    • @RetiredandLivingthedream
      @RetiredandLivingthedream  2 місяці тому

      Yes they can, the door is not sold as a security door and I adapted it to become an extra deterrent and secure the door we already have. The main aim was to be able to leave the back door open to allow air movement through the house and not worry about what came into the house via the open door. We achieved both with this door and this is what we did, The screw heads have all been burred out so no screwdriver will remove these screws, you know how difficult it is to remove screws with no heads. I added extra brackets to the frame from inside so no one can remove. The original door is strong also with security locks so this extra door adds a deterrent element to the house when were away on holiday. We also have cctv and crime here is not a problem at all here. From an engineering perspective creating an opening does not guarantee a decent airflow. A negative pressure needs to be established somewhere in the house. Natural ceiling vents would not work as the roof space is normally far hotter, so it has to be power assisted like you have with that extract fan. Personally for the money you spent on that door I would have bought two solar powered extract fans.

    • @RetiredandLivingthedream
      @RetiredandLivingthedream  2 місяці тому +2

      Hi and thanks for the comment, to be fair it is not meant to be a security door for the outside of a property, I adapted it for my needs so it opens from the outside and folds flat onto the wall. This is what I wanted and this door fitted my needs, I altered it to act also as a security door. The main door has got extra locking devices also. It acts as a deterrent and acts as ventilation which is the main reason for having this door it stops snakes Scorpions creepy Crawley's from entering the house if the door was open, everything else is a bonus. In the video I mentioned that I also put on extra secured fittings into the frame, I also drilled out the heads of the screws so no one can unscrew the screws, thanks for taking time to comment.

In the video I show more attachments that make the frame more secure and is fixed securely to the frame from inside, also I drilled the screw heads out so this makes it more difficult to do if someone wanted to do this. The main door is fitted with security measures also, It is a deterrent and most of all it is a door which provides great ventilation this was the main reason for the door. Thanks for taking time to comment.

As i have a compound wall round my property, at present i just sleep with my windows open and the fans on.

    • @RetiredandLivingthedream
      @RetiredandLivingthedream  2 місяці тому

      This is true and we looked at this method, but the gap at the bottom of the door was always a issue a bit of a push and the critters and snakes are inn. We have had snakes sneak under the back door into the house only a thin gap but big enough for pests. So it had to be substantial and it was a bonus when we can use it as extra security when we go on holidays, this door was not built as a security door but with a little adaptation it now acts as a deterrent. We also only use fans for cooling in the bedroom, we may use the aircon to cool the living room down on an evening but only for an hour or so. Getting the hot air out of the house is the key. Thanks for taking time to comment.😀😀🙏
