it's fun to watch videos by professional dahlia breeders who exhibit their blooms in flower shows. They're quite brutal with their standards and what they expect. For example, they hate "clockfacing" on dahlias - where the flower is held vertically on the plant - like a clock on the wall. it's a very serious business and fascinating to learn about !
May I just say, what a satisfying sound is the snap of snips!!
Agree
“All flowers go together.” Love it! The garden is looking fantastic. ❤️
You're so right, "all flowers match". 💐
I love this. ❤
“All flowers match.” Yessssssss! I love watching you garden, your accent takes me back to my time in the Midwest and makes me want to call old friends.
Thank you for this video, I awoke with a migraine in the middle of the night and took my usual migraine medicine but this morning felt like I had a hang over. This was just the right medicine to help me get into the day.
The "Japanese beetle swimming pool" 🤣
I really like the inclusion of the colours that don’t match in your bouquet, it creates tension in a really good way. Thanks for the lessons, you’ve convinced me I need to add some to my garden. You looked so relaxed and chill in this video.
I have always been intimidated by growing dahlias, but I gave them a go this year after finding six tubers for a buck this spring. I thought they were too dried out to grow but they did and now I'm hooked! They are so satisfying. The pay off matches the effort. Totally in love with dahlias!
So so beautiful, Dahlias are by far my favorite flowers. Thanks for sharing.
I’m growing dahlias for the first time this year. I ordered in February After I watched one of your videos. I’m pretty obsessed, I won’t tell anyone how much I’ve already spent on tubers for next year 🙈
Well Erin and Laura from Garden Answer have been my inspiration to grow dahlias- zone 5a SE WI! Last year was my first year and I did it in a very minimal way but is was enough to start the “obsession”! Instead of Walmart dahlias (which I bought last year) I ordered from Longfield Gardens for this year but was disappointed when my Thomas Edison was actually a completely different dahlia but I did get one correct tuber and it is gorgeous! This year the bug damage is considerably more so the Japanese beetles and the aphids are rampant! Dahlias are really the most gorgeous flower you can grow- thank you Erin and Laura for expanding my flower garden!💜💗💞
I ordered from Longfield for last year, and was very disappointed in accuracy and performance. My Costco dahlias did a lot better.
@@jkniederberger5390 Be glad my Costco Dahlias were a total bust. Totally not accurate in size and color. Really disappointed in that.
Erin is amazing. Learned soooo much from her, and VERY down to earth!
@@rachelletaylor4215 I'm starting to think dahlias are a crapshoot, unless you're Erin!
Yes! The best 2 channels I watch! I've learned SOOOOO MUCH
Erin you just made my morning! Last year was my first attempt at growing a dahlia. This year it was blooming like crazy...well until yesterday and our property was flooded by the remnants of this hurricane. Losing stuff is one thing, insurance will replace all of that. Losing my gorgeous flowers and vegetables is heart wrenching. The hours of being in my flower beds can never be made up.😢🥺 So here I sit at my sister’s house with my morning coffee and I see your smiling face and beautiful bouquet and I had to smile. What you do matters sweet lady, it really does. I’m just gonna live vicariously through you and your garden for a while. Thank you sooooo much for your channel!💐
I’m so sorry about your garden. 😢
🐾🌺🌻🌹🌾🌷💐🌸🐾 I hope your house is filled with Dahlia bouquets! Thanks for sharing!💞🐾🌸
I’ve become crazy about dahlias too, but it’s been so incredibly hot and dry in my corner of California that my dahlias have not bloomed at all, despite a lot of watering and pampering. I’m hoping that when it cools down in the Fall, we’ll get a bloom or two. Your garden is gorgeous and you are awesome! Thanks for sharing your bounty with us!
Thank you for this. I enjoyed seeing the ones "in real life" that I want to order. I really like your attitude and personality. Good job!
Japanese beetles are the DEVIL I have been throwing them in the bucket of death all summer!!!! Thank you for giving me courage to grow dahlias. I started mine indoors and they are looking fabulous!!!
Bucket of death! I love it!
They are so beautifull, this is my frist dahlia year. Hopefully next year will be better. This year the summer looks more like autumn here in the netherlands. Lots of rain and cold. And a crazy slug year, thousands of them in the yard.
I'm with you, all flowers go together. Look at a flower meadow, all colors and it is just breath taking.
That was beautiful Erin I love that you put all the flowers in. The colors really did blend.
Thank you for inspiring me to make a bouquet myself, I don't have dahlias to cut, but I do have a nice variety of Zinnias. Wish I could share a picture.
Beautiful! Very peaceful just going along and watching you cut them. I bet you have bouquets all around which is wonderful. Thanks!
I am smiling!! I can’t wait till I plant my dahlias!!
TIP FOR EVERYONE! In the 1920s/30's Tiffin Glass Company made a line of vases called "Dahlia vases". They are also known as "arranger vases" and "open work" vases. The "arranger" version you can plainly see they are designed with fingers in them to hold up fragile stems. They are quite beautiful and come in various sizes. I did not want to post a link but you KNOW what resell channel to hunt for them :)
Oh my goodness love your Delia's my dahlias are just getting eaten by bugs again this year love to know what you're doing that your daughters are so beautiful and not get eaten by bugs
I am of the opinion that you are correct. All Dahlias go together. Your bouquet looks beautiful! TFS 😃🤩
Those are the most gorgeous flowers. They look beautiful all together to me💕🌸🌿
Dreaming of dahlia bouquets ❤
Two sources for dahlias whose tubers are accurate to color, size, type--everything as described in their catalogs are Swan Island Dahlias and Dan's Dahlias. I have ordered from both for a long time with no disappointments. Plus, their selections are mouth watering and prices are fair. Another good source is Brent and Becky's Bulbs. I bought from them for the first time this year and their tubers are delivering nicely. Do forget buying from box stores and the like. Satisfy dma dahlia obsession through experienced growers. You won't be sorry. (And no, I am not a shill.)
All flowers match! Thank you, Erin!! 🌺 🌸 💐 So refreshing!
I like your statement…All Flowers Match…🌸🌹🌺🌼💐
I'm growing dahlias for the first time and the cutting for bouquets has been puzzling. Glad to see how I can make a beautiful arrangements with shorter stems. Also glad to hear they're going to continue to bloom still for weeks to come! (Maryland zone 7)
Iam in zone 7 too and am glad to hear you’re growing dahlias … I’ve never grown them but would like to next year. They sure are beautiful… do I start with seed or plants and if seed is there a company you can recommend? Thanks and any hints for our zone. Thanks again!
@@anitahamrick1219
I bought mine from Brecks and and all of them grew even though when they came the tubers were less than ideal. But I once heard "plants wanna grow" and these did. I'm not as fussy about whether or not I got exactly the variety that I thought I was getting I just wanted flowers to cut and bring into the house. The only thing in zone 7 is you have to wait almost until the beginning of August for flowers to start blooming. That's why I was so glad that Erin said they might bloom until October. Good luck!!
@@hd1ab1 thank you so much and I will go to that web site. God bless !!
Thank you Erin for being down to earth garden inspiration for a North Dakota gardener!
Beautiful! Next year I will dip my toes in with the HS series. For some reason I'm drawn to them.
Hey Erin.. so glad Laura pointed you out to me! Have to admit I am not into Dahlias… or anything for that matter that I need to dig up in the fall… but then again.. I am new to the garden in my new house..maybe later.. that will be a thing! But back to the point, I am so glad to find a fellow gardener in my zone, especially one that is so fun and entertaining as you! Keep up the good work!! I look forward to every new video you put out!
Its so nice and calm there
Thank you for the simple explanation of how to cut for stem length. I have lots of side buds on my dahlias and I’ve not been sure what to do about them ❤️
🌼Hi Erin and all garden friends. I live in an apartment now and have a small patio space which I fill with big containers and anything Erin and Laura (Garden Answer) tell me to plant! I put two small yellow dahlias in with two small hosta plants in my small container and I just love them! Maybe some day I’ll buy a home just to have a dahlia garden like Erin! Thank you so much for all your inspiration 🌸💚🌞🐝🦋
Thanks so much for this timely video. I am growing Dahlias for the first time. I went right out after watching this video and dead headed a lot of "squishy" flower remains I had thought were buds. I had to be aware of the bees!
So helpful seeing them on video side by side! I would love to see a video of all of them side by side (that are are blooming at the same time at least).
Just adding my thank you for the many tips to growing dahlias. First time this year and loving them!
Thanks for the tour, can`t get enough of the HS series 😁
Me too! I will try them next year.
Your love of dahlias is infectious! After watching your dahlia videos last year, I planted a few, overwintered them, and ordered more for this year. I currently have six different types growing, with plans to add more next year. Thank you for this timely video. Two of mine are in bloom and the others are budding. Can’t wait to harvest them all!
I think your Dahlias are beautiful 😍 💕
Hey thanks Erin! I really enjoyed this one! I started following you bc Laura mentioned you in a video. Glad I did! 🌸🪴🌳
Beautiful love your dahlias, I tried to grow one in a pot last year. I grew but no flower 😩 Happy to see you have great success. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Love your dahlias and the arrangement you made.
I grew my first this year from tubers - 2 kind - will plant more next year and maybe even try from seed.
Nice vid.
Beautiful! Love the breakout and the ones that are coral and look more like daisies! Love what you said about all flowers match and go together!
Absolutely gorgeous! I agree all flowers go together. I have one ,my first dahlia in a pot this year and it is just beginning to form buds. A late bloomer I guess. Anyway I will save the tubers and try it again next year and see what happens. “See what happens” seems to be always in the garden plan and it keeps things very interesting.
I'm becoming more and more a fan of the pom dahlias! I love the Wizard of Oz, and may have to order that one this year.
Omg! Your Dahlias are gorgeous!
I almost think I need to stop watching, I went a bit crazy buying Dahlias last winter after seeing your dinner plates along the house 💕 looks like there’s a few more in my future after seeing this. Heaven help me when you show the dinner plates next. Just wondering how long they’ll last in the vase.?
I agree--all flowers and foliage match...
Your dahlias are beautiful! I still have some that are peaking their first bloom.
Those jowey mirellas and zunderts are incredible!
I love dahlias too. I just got back from the Swan Island Dahlia Farm here in Oregon. They are one of the largest dahlia distributors in the world. Such an amazing place with 40 acres of dahlias. Heaven on earth.! 🌸 You would live it there!
Your garden is beautiful!!!❤️❤️❤️. Love the dahlias!!
Great tip with the triangle vs round for dahlia heads. I find the college tote especially hard to distinguish.
I clicked the Like button bc UA-cam doesn’t have a Love button. I have been Waiting Impatiently (……see what i did there?..) for your Dahlia tour! I rewatch ALL your dahlia videos.
Your dahlias are gorgeous! I am learning so much from you. Plus, you are the only gardener I've seen talk about Japanese beetles and dahlias. This year they devoured my Cafe au Lait dahlias but left my other dahlia varieties alone. Why is that? Thank you and I look forward to your future videos.
They absolutely target some varieties over others. I haven't figured out yet if they prefer a particular color or if they target plants that are a bit more stressed than others like many insects do.
Erin this year you have really inspired my dahlia growing. I keep vases of all sizes through out the house as they mature. Its been fun!
So exciting. I have been waiting on your Dahlia tour. ❤️❤️❤️
The dahlias are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing.
What over seen so far is gorgeous! I had rain almost everyday for 2 weeks & about 50% of them rotted 😥. But at least this was my 1st year with Dahlias, h most of them were from Floret seeds & therefore less of an investment.
Beautiful Erin !!!! Love your dahlias !!!
That bouquet turned out beautiful!
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing your lovely garden with us!
Dahlia garden goals! 💗
Your Dahlias are beautiful! First year seed Dahlias growing now! I never heard anything about them before last year!
Gorgeous display of your precious daliah blooms! ♡ love it!
Consider an annual panicum (Fontäne) from seed. The gluffy seed heads mix well with heavy looking dahlia bouqets. As well as some foliage from shrubs maybe.
Definitely going to get some of those collarette varieties next year!
They are gorgeous! Thank you explaining each! The bouquet is stunning!❤
Thanks for the info on dead heading, find it very confusing but you explained it pretty well, best wishes from over the pond
Fruity Pebbles bouquet. I love it.
Love that description!
Hummingbird on the left 41 seconds in. Cool
Ooh ... I missed it!
Beautiful flowers Erin! I’m not dealing with Japanese beetles but their cousins the Asian Garden beetle and Oriental beetle. Just as destructive.
It doesn't really seem to be an issue. It's certainly warm but I think that's why the plants are doing well.
Tried growing dahlias, too. Very humid this summer and also had spider mites on half and a TON of Japanese beetles. There’s no way I could keep up with hand picking them off. I was so looking forward to the blooms and was so very discouraged at the results. I’m not sure I have the heart to try again!
This was my first year of growing dahlias, a gorgeous red and white one! It didn’t have a name tag. I got it at a farmers market. I’m hooked! Can’t wait to try to overwinter it. Thanks for showing how to dead head them.
Thank you for your dahlia videos. I never thought about growing dahlias before, but I'm loving them in my garden this year. And the sweet sleepy bee bum, how adorable! I need that Crichton Honey dahlia, gorgeous!
I love them all! I too have followed you and Laura . First time Dahlia grower Some bought from Eden Brothers Small World, Natalie G and Cafe Au Lait and Dahila Mix Also bought from home depot and those are doing great Kelvin's Floodlight. Hawaii ( Japanese beatles really like this one) and Noordwijks glory all so beautiful! I've flicked the beatles into the water and used organza bags just to save them Love filling the house and giving them away......Just placed a huge order for spring. I'm so glad I found you. It been such a blessing to learn so much from you all!
You are amazing. Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for being a valuable resource for us.
my first year with dahlias and i didn't stake them so they have grown over the sides of the container and are on the ground. the blooms are amazing though ! next year . . .
What a beautiful garden and your collection of dhalias is amazing. I really must have some of those pompoms 🤗 can't wait for next year
I grew a few dahlias for the very first time this year. I was reluctant because I’m not into staking but I saw a bunch of short, single-flower varieties on sale and figured it was worth a shot. I have them in large, mixed pots and certain spots n the garden, and I’m so happy with them. The bees are too ☺️ The types with dark foliage add so much texture and interest even without flowers, I much prefer them because I feel like I’m getting a two-for-one deal 😆🙃
Thanks for the video, Erin! My wife and I just came across Swan Island Dahlias and will be ordering some from them for next year. Can't believe I've never grown these amazing flowers. I bring bouquets to the office for all the ladies and they enjoy having them. Again, thanks for the encouragement to grow them!
The ladies will love the dahlias! I worked in a library where a patron kept each of our desks blooming with them.
I live near Swan Island Dahlias. It’s amazing to walk through their dahlia gardens.
@@denisedorsey2889 I have never been to SID but that's a beautiful part of the country. Take a tour for me and my wife!
Simply🌸🐝EAutiful😊as always!
I planted for the first time this year, 1/2 successfully👍🏼I’m going BIG next year with more varieties🥰
Please make a dahlia tuber inboxing this year!
Yes!!! I've been waiting for this!
Hey Erin! Amazing Video!!! Your Flower Are So Pretty! Mines are growing slowly
I really enjoy you and your garden. I have a couple of dahlias grown from seed that I'm waiting to see bloom!🌸 Thanks for the inspiration and information! 🏵 I noticed a little trouble with focus on this video, and I'm wondering if is my old TV...?
Love, love, love the dahlias and beautiful bouquet! Total newbie here in Virginia. Zone 6B. After I stopped picking the Japanese beetles off my roses daily, Ugh!, then I planted my first dahlia tubers in late July. Trying the same type of dahlias in a morning sun flower bed and some in an afternoon sun bed as an experiment. So far, they're only 3" high, but I'm hopeful for blooms in a few weeks. Clay soil here, so I'm trying to figure out watering in high heat(90s-100s last week) and now cooler weather(70s-80s this week 8/17). Thank you for sharing your garden and for your wonderful videos!!
So pretty. I love your garden.
Japanese beetle ! I hope we don't get that round here....lovely dahlia info
BEAUTIFUL Erin! Sadly, groundhogs and rainiest July took out most of my dahlias. I'm also anticipating rot in the soil so I'll have to purchase new ones. (what a terrible problem to have.... ;) lol) So, I'll plan for next year!
Glorious!
Your dahlias look great! Mine have fizzled out this year. I think I just got started way too late. Oh well, there's always next year! :)
So pretty
So beautiful!! Thank you!
I didn’t plant any dahlias this year, but I do miss them. Here in the desert they require tons of water or shade.
