So, I potted up my Corona Green Genie Cattleya in lava rock, charcoal and pebbles. Im excited to see it grow and bloom. Im a confessed copycat. I copied your method. Lava on the bottom. I put my pebbles and charcoal on top. Genie is in one of those octogonal wood baskets. Thank you, Mr. Rick. Again, glad you are back and doing well...and Jan. Hogie is the cutest. My son has an old dog, 15 years old. He had what my daughter called a "senior moment", and got lost. He was found down the street. Safe.

My son lives close to the foot hills in NC. God knows what other critters live out there. 😂 I know we have bears. My brother's dog was malled by a bear a few years ago in the Southeast on our farm. Today, Green Genie is looking good. The peudobulbs were really swiveled from the dry ride here. They have plumped up, looking better that yesterday. So i know the root system is working. No new roots showing yet, but im happy just seeing the bulbs plump up. Ok, thanks a bunch.. I'm talking too much. Have a great weekend ☺️!
So comforting to hear your voice again with your tutorials on repots, etc. You always make repots seem so easy and effortless. I grow mostly in LECA but also use lava rock for some orchids. I aspire to be at least half as good as you when growing orchids. My orchids are all inside right now (I live in Pennsylvania) and l long for the day when I can move them outside for the Summer! Thanks and as always I wish you good health! 💜
Ed of Ed's Orchids mentioned you in his video today regarding planting Paphiopedilums in lava Rock, so I went searching in my subscriber list and you weren't there 😢 Maybe it's because I changed my channel name, but I have rectified that by re-subscribing. Hi Rick, I am fairly new to growing orchids and love UA-cam for finding great help and advice. I came across your channel a while back and have been checking out your older videos. Imagine my surprise when you started posting again. I'm so happy that you and Jan are doing well. Your strength and resilience are amazing, and you are both so inspiring! Now, I'm seeing comments from SO MANY of my favorite orchid channels! (I love you Nina❤ @NinjaOrchids 🥷). I see Paula buying orchids from Yoshi all the time. I'm so jealous of her collection, and I have started subscribing to her channel also. It warms my heart that the orchid community is such a helpful and loving bunch. I have found my happy place.😊 Thanks to you and everyone else who shares their love and knowledge of orchids! Sherrii🪷
Rick Wow!!!!! I never comment, but I just had to say how happy I am to see you're back at it. I watched from when you started, every video at least once. I find myself going back to your old videos quite often, especially your nutrient videos. I am an old guy that started the orchid addiction about the same time as you. Fellow orchid lovers ask me how I can grow such beautiful plants and do it so quickly. I tell them, "If you are really interested watch Rick L Orchid." Thanks Buddy. I couldn't haven't done it without you. I am in Central Florida with approx. 220+ beautiful plants because of you.
Thank you, Rick! I’m so happy that you are back. I trust your methods of growing and appreciate your guidance. I’m thankful that your and Jan’s health is so much better. Overall, I love your channel.
I'm so happy to see you back and enjoying the orchid life! I started watching your fertilizer videos about 6 months ago and I cannot tell you how helpful they are. I am going to experiment with lava rocks, it makes so much sense. I'm in Illinois so we're just starting to see spring, perfect timing for this. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, ever grateful! 🙌
I have never grown in river rock or lava rock but I am going to give it a try. I live in New Hampshire so it's a totally different climate so we'll see what happens. ❤🤞🌹
Good morning Rick. We had a Dachshund when i was in highschool. He lived to 18 years. In the northwest in my sunny window i split most of my Cattelya 50% lava rock,20 percent coco husk chunks,10 % large charcoal and 10% jumbo pearlite... the mix changes based on the orchid and me trying to get as many orchids to need watering at the same time. All in red clay pots. Most are vented. I use Peters Excel Cal Mag Special with Black Iron along with some supplements. Glad your back. God Bless

Thanks for another great video, Rick. I'm glad Jan is doing well and that your stag has a lovely new home where many can appreciate and enjoy its beauty. Hearing about the scientific research will be very interesting. I've always appreciated your thought provoking videos, whether backed your experience, logic, science, or all three. I can't wait to hear more.
I used to be called Ephy's Orchids and Cats. I went through some health issues of my own, and lost quite a few of my orchids and houseplants. I only have 10 orchids left and haven't made a video in a long time. I still love to watch videos though! I'm so glad you're back!
I encourage you to get back to videos. Everyone needs a reason to get up out of their sick bed and be creative, be one with nature and be with your community. Morning Rick, I’ve never been successful with Cattleya but after seeing your video I bought cattleya white bridal ‘yuki’ yesterday from an orchid show that needs potting up. For root reasons I normally use clear pots but wonder what your views are for clay pots ? Doesn’t the roots secure themselves to the clay making it difficult to repot at a later date ? Hugs
Hi Rick! So sorry to hear you lost your furry family member! I am sure he had a great life with you and Jan. The little guy looks so sweet. It is so kind of you to think of Margaret. She and Keith have had a rough time recently with her Chemo treatments. They are strong and amazing people like yourselves. I was so glad to see that she posted a video recently. Hello Rick…. It’s so good to see you on your channel again. This was just to say that Margaret Easts channel is now called Orchids and Gardens in England.
Thank you for introducing me to growing in rock and pebbles. I have not used lava rock before, but im going to repot my Dendrobium in a lava rock mixed with pebbles. Its in pebbles right now. Been growing in it for 2 years. It was a free scrap. Not bloomed yet but it has 3 big canes. 🤞
Rick, I wish I saw your channel much earlier and before building my entire collection. You actually make sense and your explanations are wonderful! I would love to send you some orchids, so you can build your collection again. Just like you said - orchids are healing ! For me, they are stress relief and pure happiness. Every morning I start with coffee and orchid walk through 😅. May God give you strength for being our inspiration! And I am seriously about sending you some orchids. How can I do it? P.S. My grandmother lived for 20+ years with broken hip and when she was in her late eighties, she said her garden gave her strength and longevity while doctors told her at 65 she will never walk again! You need your orchids ! And I would love to contribute:)

❤😊Rick L., it is such a wonderful blessing to hear your voice and to see your hands work with orchids again!
I'll be praying for Margaret and her husband in the U.K
GOD BLESS YOU and JAN..🙏🙏
thank you ......and thank you for Margarets prayers......I'm proof of prayers healing ability....
Safe.
.......Thank you my friend....Im sure it will do well for you.......Good filtered light, Calmag and a good soak in nutrients is all they need......Im so glad they found your sons dog....we have coyotes here and they will grab any stray they find......please let me know how it does for you.......have a great weekend.
Enjoy listening to you
SOOOO good to see a video posted and hear your voice. Glad you’re spending time with us. And Hoagie is adorable. Love the puppies!
.......wow Morgan.....how wonderful to see your words.....hope you are doing well my friend......thank you
Thank you Rick, I think we all had to deal with so many sickness issues but glad you are doing good
........your correct.....everyone has thier struggles.......kindness and support goes along way.......thank you
So comforting to hear your voice again with your tutorials on repots, etc. 💜
......very kind Barbara......cant wait to put mine outside in a month or so.
Ed of Ed's Orchids mentioned you in his video today regarding planting Paphiopedilums in lava Rock, so I went searching in my subscriber list and you weren't there 😢 Maybe it's because I changed my channel name, but I have rectified that by re-subscribing. I have also visited Paula's channel. Thank you for the shout out Rick. Tears flowed, not tears of sadness, but tears of happiness. You and Jan take care.
......my dear friend....warms my heart to see you and your words here in my comments....Ed is a treasure to the orchid community......we are here for you with support, prayers.....and all the love and kindness we can give......stay strong.....keep fighting till this is all behind you........
Nice repot. You get the hang of filming again in no time. I'm sure of it. And to hear your voice again sharing your knowledge put a big smile on my face. .Hope you and your wife are doing fine and hope you have a lovely weekend. Cheers!
......feeling a bit rusty....awkward in front of the camera.....cheers my friend
Hi Rick! Wonderful to see a video up so soon! 🎉. I started growing orchids three years ago and started learning from you. I was heart broken to hear you weren’t well and had to give up your plant collections. But you’re back and we are all here to learn once again. You take care and take it easy too…..
😍👋🏼 woohoo!!
@@NinjaOrchids And then I turned to Nina……
So nice of you
I am sooo overjoyed you are back. When I found your channel, I spent a couple days just watching all of your videos. I have learned so much from
you. Again, I am so glad you are making videos again and look forward to the next one.
.....thanks Robin.......means alot!
Hey Rick! So glad you and Jan are doing well. Thanks for the video on potting with Iava rock. I have stuck using bark and perlite with having to keep it light due to weakness from stroke. Prayers my friend!
......sorry to hear of your struggles......will keep you in our thoughts and prayers also......you have to grow with what works best for your situation....lots of media works just as well.....keep growing.......god bless.
I remember Angus eating that fig off your tree, Rick. That was a first for me, stuck in my memory, lols.
.......such a wonderful memory to share......thank you so much my friend!
I have found my happy place.😊
Thanks to you and everyone else who shares their love and knowledge of orchids!
Sherrii🪷
.....oh Sherrii.....I loved your sentiments so much.......the best growers hang out here......
220+ beautiful plants because of you.
........I love hearing that........220+....that sounds wonderful.....your too kind....thank you
So wonderful to see that you are back, Rick. Thought of you and Jan so many times😊
thanks Kayte......means a lot.
Thank you, Rick! I’m so happy that you are back. I trust your methods of growing and appreciate your guidance. I’m thankful that your and Jan’s health is so much better. Overall, I love your channel.

.....such kind words.....thank you so much.
Enjoy ed the video as usual glad to hear your voice God bless❤👍
........many blessings back......thank you
I'm so happy to see you back and enjoying the orchid life! 🙌
.....so sweet.....thank you so very much......I lived in peoria for a time years ago.....also Galesburg.....good times .....some great people.
I have never grown in river rock or lava rock but I am going to give it a try. I live in New Hampshire so it's a totally different climate so we'll see what happens. ❤🤞🌹
Its the bees knees and I am sure you won't regret it! 👍🏼
.......its very easy to use.......very forgiving....and gives you alot of control.......no matter the climate or location........thanks for watching
I’m so glad you’re back Rik….Actually overjoyed!! You sound really good. Looking forward to your informative videos 💕. Thank you!

......thank you so much.
When I saw on Ninja orchids that you were back . I was so happy.🎉🎉 .
.......very kind.......what a great channel Ninja orchids has.....such great information!
God Bless
😍👋🏼
......Richard.....thank you......18yrs.....wow I hope we get that with Hoagie......I love to hear of other growers and thier experience with growing in these medias........a cup of coffee with you would be a great afternoon talking growing....blessings back my friend
Thanks for the video. So glad Roger suggested your channel.
.......that was kind of Roger to recommend my channel.....he was one of the first really good channels that I found early on......he has lots of knowledge to pass on.
I can't wait to hear more.
........thank you so very much!
I am so happy to see you back making great videos again. I wish you all the bests in these coming years.
very kind.....thank you!
I used to be called Ephy's Orchids and Cats. I went through some health issues of my own, and lost quite a few of my orchids and houseplants. I only have 10 orchids left and haven't made a video in a long time. I still love to watch videos though! I'm so glad you're back!
......so sorry to hear of your struggles......but so glad your still here and still growing.....
I encourage you to get back to videos. Everyone needs a reason to get up out of their sick bed and be creative, be one with nature and be with your community. (Even if you are healed, it's easy to "take the day off" and do nothing because it's comfortable.) Isolation is not your friend. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵 USA. Take care of yourself and each other 😷
You introduced me to lava rock..now I’m not afraid to experiment. Thank you
.......we will talk more about growing in stone, lava, etc down the road......its very easy media to use.
Youre videos are such a breath of fresh air Rick. And I love the birds singing in the background. Still too cold up here in WI for the birds to be that happy yet.
.......spring is coming....thank you for the kind words.!
This made my day! Wonderful to have you back 🙏🌻
.....happy to be back.....thank you.
Hi Rick! I have an orchid channel! You have been a great mentor. I've been using rocks for media for over 4 years now. As per your advise. It works great. I really enjoy and refer back to your videos on fertilizer and calmag, magnesium, ppm, etc. could you please do more asap. 😊
Your the Best!
👋🏼 I am subbed to you and was wondering when you would post again! hope you are doing well!
........we will always talk about nutrition.... especially calcium importance......Thank you so much
@@rickl.orchids hehehe last 3 days calcium nitrate was the focus on the patio. 🥳
I plant some of my Bromeliads in a combination of larger Lava Rock and larger Charcoal chunks. Works out really well well

Really enjoyed watching this video this morning. I am so happy that I discovered that you were back on UA-cam with your orchid videos. It was always a pleasure to share my interest in ordhids with you.
Thank you so much!
Looks great hope she’d be happy for you. Yes my husband had cancer kidney cancer and lung cancer but in a mission at the moment just takes every day goes by he’s in his 70s doing okay. Fingers crossed. Hope your wife is okay too
.....thank you so much.......will keep prayers for his continued good health.....
Dig six inches by six inches in that fence corner and put sand there going to the left. Keep your fence from going bad on the bottom there. Bag babies are always nice. Lot of choices now. Hail from conecuh county.
........great tip.....thank you Brian
So lovely to have you back, missed your dulcet tones.
Your garden sounds beautiful ☺️
Sending hugs from UK
.......thank you.....hugs from Alabama...
I look forward to seeing the progress on your cattleya. It probably won’t be too long before you will have her in bloom!
Take care of yourselves!! 😊
...Thank you for the kind words....we are praying for Margaret and Kieth.......she is such a kind soul.....she is in good hands....
This is great All your knowledge is going to be out there again. 🎉
........thank you very much!
I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
.....thank you Tess!
Hello Rick…. It’s so good to see you on your channel again. This was just to say that Margaret Easts channel is now called Orchids and Gardens in England.
......you are correct.....she is such a incredible lady with a huge heart......her strength is just beginning to be shown.....
.......thank you for the wonderful feedback......I love to hear about others success.......
Great to hear your voice.Luv the video.I’am trying this method right now myself.I just add some charcoal.😊
.....thank you......charcoal is a great edition.
Glad to see your back and doing much better. I am looking forward to more of your teaching videos. 😊
.....thanks Cathy......
I’m so glad you’re back and making new videos!
.......its great to be back......thank you.
And I would love to contribute:)
thank you so very much for your generous kind offer.....at this moment I am taking small steps back into the orchid collecting....hope you understand......Im still getting my strength back after several surgeries.....I will let everyone know when Im able to accept more plants......and I would be honored to recieve such a gift from you.....
So happy to hear you are both doing well and that Jan is cancer free. I love your channel and your comments about other orchid channels. Some I just dismiss straight away but a few others, like yours, just seem to resonate so I stick with them and don't look at any more lol. After following what you guys do my phals and dendrobiums are doing the best ever. So huge thanks. You're just so down-to-earth (or scoria) lol
.....thats so very kind......and makes me so happy to hear of your orchids doing so well.......
Glad to see you back Rick
......thank you Tom!
Thanks for your uploads man, it’s really helpful for people entering the hobby
thank you.......when I started growing...I struggled looking for good growing information.......hope I can help answer a few questions
So nice to hear from you again. Thanks for videos. The cal/mag. has helped my orchids so much. God bless!!
Sending you love, wisdom and happiness.
thank you so very much.......wonderful to hear of your success
I'm a bit late commenting on your long awaited video Rick. I've been a little upset as my best friend passed away......although it was expected with throat cancer.
Anyhow Rick it's so nice to hear your strong voice again and to see you haven't changed your opinion on lava rock. Over here we don't get the weather you have in Alabama and if the temperture reaches 75f it's considered to be a heatwave!!!. I'm going to try and find some red lava rock and I'll give my Cattleyas a treat and hope for the best......I'll blame you if it doesn't work!!!!!! Take care both of you....take care...keep wel
Ed.
so very sorry to hear Ed......are thoughts are with you......I believe with your experience......you could grow in any media......
Love your dachshund. Sorry for the loss of your other dog 😢.
thank you.......we miss him....but remember the wonderful time we had with him.
Oh my! Really miss your videos! Hope all is well with you and the family !
Missed, past tense! Praise God 🙏✝️
thank you.....we are doing well.
Hi Rick, I'm still praying for you and Jan. I grow most of my 30 orchids in lava rock in clay pots from watching your video's many years ago. I'm growing in a SE facing window with LED lights year round and most of the orchids are doing great. Paula is a wonderful friend. Please everyone subscribe to her channel.
......Jean...thank you.....and thank you for supporting Paula......she is a dear friend as well.
In your capable hands that orchid has no idea how it will grow, grow, grow! Once I hear you say ‘calcium’ again I’ll know all is well with the world. So glad to see you getting your hands dirty (er… rocky) again, Rick.
.......thank you my friend......we are getting ready to talk nutrients very soon.
