  • Tuning and intonation can be tricky to master, especially when you're a beginner. In this cello tutorial, I give advice for those of you who are interested in refining yourself cello skills. The concepts in the video apply to violins, violas, and basses as well. It's important to set a foundation of good intonation before moving on to other aspects of playing!

    I definitely can back up what she says about people without good intonation; I couldn’t hold a tune to save my life, but if you stick with it and take your time listening both to correct notes and correct intervals you can absolutely train your ears

    I've had a cello for years, meaning well to learn it more. Now my 9 year old daughter is taking violin in school, so we play together. However, she knows nothing about the cello so your videos have been a great stand in for a real instructor! Thank you!

    I’ve been playing for less than a week, but I have 20+ years of piano. Cello is daunting because I haven’t had to worry about tuning before. I love the exercise at the end you suggested with the ringing. Today I practiced with a tuner to try and see where I was in tune, but I know I can’t rely on that forever.

    Thanks Sarah Joy for your helpful videos. I heard of a study that showed that playing a note at a tiny bit of a sharp pitch is more pleasing to the human ear. I generally keep my strings at 441 which allows for them to flatten a little when I play.

    Love your videos. Thanks. What do you think of leaving a clip on tuner on the cello while practicing scales and etudes?

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  8 років тому +1

      +jkrenn13 I think that's fine if you are working on intonation. If you are working on sound production and tone, definitely not. I've noticed that the clips tend to slightly mute the sound, or they start buzzing, which is worse.

    I love your videos and I always learn something new. I am just starting to learn and I am having a hard time playing in tune. One method I have been thinking about is recording myself and load it into final cut pro. By doing this final cut pro creates a sound file with a sound wave. I can compare this wave to a actual recording of someone who is playing it correctly. Not sure how this will work out (have not done it yet) but the theory sounds good. I am looking for some software that can help me do this in real time where I can see the sound wave on the screen that over laps the correct sound wave. Hope this makes sense to someone because I know I am not explaining it well. Anyway........Love your videos.....keep up the great work. Thanks

    Hi do you have any tips for getting accurate fingering and playing in tune when starting out as a beginner? I don't mean finding the right note one time but throughout the song.

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  7 років тому +5

      +K Lu Practicing your scales is the way to go. If you can get your scales in tine, then you'll start getting the notes of songs in tune as well.

    many times if there is a piano it will be tuned to 442 and so the whole orchesta would have to tune to 442, bcz a piano is ofc harder to tune than a whole orchestra, and sometimesit happens as well if a certain naipe is all tuned to something for exmple 441 then the whole orchestra will tune to 441 so that that naipe doesnt have to retune and i think thats it really. also i guess is possible if the conducter simply wants the orchestra to be tuned to wtvr he wants

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  8 років тому +1

      This is true. The professional orchestra I was a part of did this quite often. Eventually, I ended up keeping my cello at 442 for most of the time. lol

    I play the guitar and not the cello, but do you notice that when you play the same note on two strings you can hear the notes come into perfect unison? to me it sounds like a bell or a flute.

    Hi I am still quite new to playing cello. I am playing all the scales by ears as for now. My notes gets out of tune by quite a far bit especially at the 3rd octave. Are there any good ways to practice for that range? or should I just mark the position?

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  8 років тому +1

      +dong jn I'd probably go ahead and mark it, or perhaps practice with a drone.

    I have a great tuner on my iPhone. So I can check if individual notes are in tune. I love your trick about if the note is in tune it rings after lifting bow. I love your lessons. Do you still have Skype lessons available. What is the cost? Or where are you located for private lessons.

    Thankyou, Sarah! For the amazing video.
    I am learning to play a violin and hence its intonations. I find it too difficult to realise whether I am playing in tune. Therefore, I frequently glance at my tuner for feedback (and I find myself off by almost ±0.5Hz to 1.5Hz most of the time). Please suggest me a way to overcome this hurdle.

    • @edwardwang9257
      @edwardwang9257 4 роки тому

      Dibyojyoti Sinha you should learn how much your ear is off by because i realized that i would often hear the note in tune but the tuner will say that in flat, so i just played everything so that i hear them sharper than usual and eventually adjusted

    Sara, hi. Thank you very much for your video. I try to play the cello for some years now. It's difficult, because I don't have the time or money to get lessons. But I also don't intend to achieve a high level, just to play simple pop songs or songs I compose myself. Intonation is my mayor problem. I've trained this for years, using the first method you show and playing with a drone or backing track. I've learned to recognize when I'm playing in tune, but I just cannot get the muscle memory to play IN the exact place every time I put my fingers on the board. I've trained this for hours, days, months and years and it really frustrates me that I cannot play 4 notes on a song and to hear them tuned. The thing is, the more I train, the more I develop my ear, but my muscles don't learn, so the frustration grows the more I practice. Any help you think you can give me? Thanks again!

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  8 років тому +1

      I agree! Having someone play a tune, and then copying them by ear is a great way. To develop good intonation, playing with a drone is also helpful. Really, it just comes down to a ton of listening, and then a ton of recreating that on your instrument.

    You likely had to tune to A 442 because that is what the percussion instruments are usually tuned to. That is at least how it is for the group I play in.

    Do you think it's possible to learn cello by myself at age 12? I've been practicing every day, but I don't actually know if I should get a private teacher...

    • @TheBlueeyedJew
      @TheBlueeyedJew 6 років тому +1

      Lula Hugo it's possible. But it's also possible to develop bad technique and habits without proper coaching. Those habits can take months or years to unlearn.

  • @jadenframpton2000

    What do you do if your pegs wont stay in place?

    • @TheBlueeyedJew
      @TheBlueeyedJew 6 років тому

      Bosiphus1415 Official see a qualified luthier if peg drops don't work. I don't know what kind of cello you have, but the "beginner" cellos like the ones sold online for a few hundred dollars usually don't have a properly drilled peg box and/or do have ill-fitting pegs that will never stay tuned without professional attention. Not all inexpensive cellos have this problem, but it's very common. Oft times what seems like a good deal on Amazon ($200-1000) really isn't a good deal at all because the cost of all the adjustments/corrections needed to make it playable can cost as much or more than the cello itself.

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  7 років тому +1

      Oh no!! I have a tutorial on tuning that might help. You have to wind slowly and make sure you loosen it a bit along the way.

    • @samanthasousa8828
      @samanthasousa8828 7 років тому +1

      Sarah Joy I have seen it, it was very helpful, I should've watched that first....because not too long later the A string snapped. They were good strings too, Kaplan. Now I have Helicores on it and I don't touch the tuning pegs unless major major adjustment is needed or I have my dear friend, who plays the cello in a professional orchestra help me do it. She's been playing for over 30 years so I trust her with it.
