    Popper's Elfentanz comes to mind: does it uses harmonics for the highest notes?
    Also regarding thumb position scales, would you do a video on three vs two fingering? Would it make sense to use three fingers to reduce the number of shifts?

    • @Cellopedia
      @Cellopedia 3 роки тому +2

      Yes, there are harmonics in Elfentanz, but no artificial harmonics. It is hard enough to play it as is :) I always prefer 3 fingers pattern to minimize number of shifts (lazy technique :) - unless more shifts is better for phrasing...

    Can you make a video explaining how you use the thumb, the exact placement of the thumb, where exactly it touches the strings.
    I have the impression that yours covers 3 strings (A,D&G), when i use the thumb i only cover A &D string, the A string touche the middle of my nail while the D touches the upper knuckle of the thumb.

    3:16 I ask you a question, is it wrong if I play the harmonic note (of each string) for example on the D string, is it wrong if I play the harmonic D of the fourth position with the 4th finger instead of the third? For example, playing the D major scale, I have been playing A with the first finger, B with the second finger, then C♯ with the fourth finger and D with the fourth, also sliding from C♯ to D. or also the scale first finger B with second finger C♯ with finger two and D with finger third and then the same except B played it with finger three instead of finger two.
    I ask this because I understand that the common thing is to do the B with the first finger with the second then the C♯ with the 4th and the D with the third finger and the same thing around.
    I ask you about all this because I have been discovering and exploring various fingerings and I know that there are multiple possibilities and I don't know which is correct or normal. I hope you understand my question.

    • @Cellopedia
      @Cellopedia 10 місяців тому

      Your question about fingerings, especially regarding playing harmonics and scales on the cello, is a great one and touches on a fundamental aspect of string playing: the flexibility and personalization of fingerings.
      There's nothing inherently wrong with playing the harmonic note on the D string (or any string) with a different finger than what is traditionally taught. Using the fourth finger instead of the third, as in your example, is perfectly acceptable if it feels comfortable and produces a good sound.
      The variations you described in playing the D major scale are also valid. The choice of fingerings in scales (and in music in general) often depends on the context, such as the preceding or following notes, the desired tone quality, or technical ease. While there are standard or common fingerings that are often taught for scales and other passages, these are not set in stone. Many advanced players and professionals use alternative fingerings based on their hand size, technical strengths, and the musical expression they want to achieve.
      Discovering and exploring various fingerings is actually a very important part of becoming a proficient cellist. It means you're learning to adapt the instrument to your physical and musical needs.
      The "correct" fingering is often the one that allows you to play the passage most effectively, comfortably, and expressively.
      Keep exploring and trust your musical instincts!

      Hello Peter, I got this cello 20 years ago in Russia. I showed it to several prominent experts, but nobody can tell me who made it. Some suggested it was Italian, some that it was made in Germany. I am not very upset about it - this is my voice I was fortunate to find.

      @@Cellopedia Thank you for the prompt reply. Would you have an idea as your cello’s age?
      Also do you have any videos of Cossman exercices? All that I’ve found are accomplished cellists playing the exercises fast. I’m three months into my practice and just starting the exercises. It’s very labour intensive and the noise I emit is not enjoyable. It’s working both my left hand and the bow hand. I have to really focus on my fingering. What I enjoy about your tutorials is how you break everything down and take it slowly.

      Yes! It is often used in modern music. However, it is close to impossible to control the pitch of these notes.
