- The topic of this video is applicable to all musicians regardless of what instrument they play. After playing and teaching music for many years, I've noticed certain patterns of destructive practicing, and what sort of results they yield. All of the advice that I give in this video are on troubles that I have personally dealt with, and am still struggling with. Hopefully my personal experience can help you!

"Practice makes permanent" - so true! My biggest mistake when I practice is I try to play through the entire piece every time. I really have to force myself to focus on the measures I have problems with and play them the most.
Haha Yeah, it really is one of the most common difficulties for all musicians.
I got a cello because of you ❤️ you are my favourite and you influence me so much. Please don't stop doing UA-cam videos because you are gifted
+Roisin Gleeson This. This made my day.
+Sarah Joy you make my day when you upload
cutest comment on UA-cam

I just got my first cello, and it's been kind of tough. I'm doing orchestra in 7th grade, and I wanted to play the cello. I love watching this channel and it's really helped me. Eventually, I might sound like I might know what I'm doing.
Haha I am sure that you will! I'm glad these videos can help.
Great tips, I totally agree with all of these. Also your backdrop is soo beautiful! Gorgeous still life.
I am in beginning orchestra in middle school and I am definitely asking for a cello for Christmas.
Thank you for your help! =)
Awesome!! I hope you get one!
I just got a cello today and you are teaching me loads of stuff! ;)
Subscribed! I'm a sixth grade cellist, and I just picked up the bow this year. I have been playing instruments since I was five, but I've never really connected to any of them: violin, trumpet, viola, French horn, ect. In third grade, I took up the cello, but I had a teacher that wasn't very engaged in my learning, so I wasn't very interested in this instrument. I started playing in the band, but I DEFINITELY wasn't quite made for band. I decided to give cello another chance because I was learning harp and my strings teacher recommended playing cello while starting out. At first, I still wasn't connecting to the music or sound of the cello, but I discovered your channel and was inspired by your mentality and learned how to play the correct way, and now I feel like I've finally found a new passion! Thank you so much, Sarah!
Hello Olivia, thank you for subscribing! And wow!! This comment made me so happy. I'm really glad I could inspire you to connect with the cello. I hope that even if you stop watching my videos, that you continue finding things that motivate you. Don't ever give up. :)
Thank you so much for replying!
I am actually learning the guitar at the moment, but have thought of the cello or violin, which is how I stumbled upon your videos! I have to say I have thoroughly enjoyed your teaching and I found this video particularly helpful, and just as you said, regardless of the instrument! I will definitely come back to this video to remind myself of these valuable practicing tips! Thanks! You play beautifully by the way :)
I just picked up the cello again! Looking forward to more helpful videos(:
Sarah you are pretty much the only music teacher I watch on UA-cam. You really make a difference to when I play and it these videos help me a lot. Don't stop making videos, you are amazing!!!!
Superb. All of it!
I especially like the reminder not to let mistakes slip by. I think this often happens because teachers push you through pieces too quickly. I used to get very frustrated by mistakes but now I try to say "I'm glad I noticed that. Now I can learn something new."
I think the most important thing you mention is listening and yet it's the easiest thing to forget.
Thanks!
Not a cello player (learning the hammered dulcimer) but always on the look out for practice tips. And these help immensely... thanks! Your comments on playing slow are refreshing... and reinforce my long held idea of "don't practice your mistakes" (eek) The cello looks like fun, and must be very rewarding? Hammer dulcimer is too, but b'cuz we play so fast (16th notes and sometimes 32nd notes) things can go wrong in a hurry :) i am amazed at how much muscle-memory, or to put it another way - kinetic sense, has to do with learning. Tnx again for sharing.
You are damn right with all the points. Love when you say musicality is gone it is our choice. Thanks. 'practice makes permanent'
Couldn't agree more..
I totally appreciate your insight, you have a incredible ability to be serious but still encouraging!
+Taylor Parker Thanks Taylor! That's an awesome compliment. :D
Very helpful advice, thank you Sarah !!!
Thank you very much for those lessons ! I'm beginner and I love to ear experiences of pro !!! Cello is not easy but it's so wonderful !!!
1:00, 1st mistake
Very good advice, and it is so hard to learn to slow down! But you must.
Please keep up with all the fabulous "basics" videos. So so critical to build a strong foundation. Well done
Thank you :)
All excellent points! Number 5 hit home. Every once in a while I will open the garage and just play entire pieces from the heart. Sometimes neighbors will stop by to listen. It is edifying! No. 1 has been a problem for me for 30 years. I'm finally starting to slow down. It's making a big difference in both my cello (sonatas) and piano repertoire (Chopin Etudes).
Hi Sarah! I just subscribed to your channel. I'm somewhere between beginner and intermediate level and your tutorials are just amazing and has helped me immensely with improving some of my techniques, like co-ordination, vibrato, bowing economy, etc. I'm not sure if you've posted any tutorials on finger positions yet, but I especially would like to see a tutorial on finger positions from the 5th position onwards. I'm comfortable with changing to various positions from half to fourth but as soon as the thumb goes on, it gets a little messy lol. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video! It was so good to be reminded of all of those important things!
#5 made me tear up; I know exactly what you mean! Whenever I realise that I am starting to get a but too entangled in the technical parts and that frustration starts to develop in me, I take a deep breath, and I smile at the music sheet in front of me and remind myself that I love that piece - and the piece and I are not here to wrestle with each other!...and that I would like my love to reflect in the way I play it. And that is when the miracle happens, hehe: suddenly it just all flows better. It actually makes perfect sense because the less frustrated and tense you are the better you can play. :)
+StrawberryPavlova1 Exactly!!! It's so easy to just get caught up in it, and before you know it, a multitude of bad habits have developed. It's something every musician has to reckon with.
Sarah....... thank you, thank you for giving good direction to my cello practice. I needed that.
Happy to help! :)
Thank you for the class
Thank you for your videos. They are very inspirational. I have been playing for 3 years and am an adult beginner.
Thanks for taking the time to write this! I'm always happy to help!
I used to take days to memorize songs. But after taking you're advice I learned minuet no.2 in 3 hours! Thank you so much this video!
That's amazing! Very good.
This was great thank you!!
Great tips.
Great advice!
Sarah have you been spying on me practicing :-) you have just pointed out 90% of my practice and techniques. thanks for the pointers they should help out a lot during my next practice
+Brad G lol That'd be a bit creepy. Iol I'm glad the video can help!
Brad G same
Thanks! Helpful like always
+Paul Vergé So glad it can help.
Practice makes improvement
Hi Sarah! Could you make a video on your biggest tips for someone starting to practice the Cello? I'm in too rural of an area to find a teacher so I have to self-learn and would love some tips!
Well, I do have a video about cello basics for beginners as well as a video on which books will help you get started. Other than that, look up answers online whenever specific questions arise. Having a teacher (even online) is the fastest way to get started. I do offer Skype lessons, and I'm sure that there are other online cello teachers out there as well.
I would love it if you did a tutorial about trills!
I just discovered your channel and i love your covers of different songs. Could you do a cover of Eleanor Rigby by the beatles
I’m having a hard time practicing in with people around, I feel like they are criticizing me
Same...
I decided to start learning cello just after I watched your videos 👍🏻
YES!! Mission accomplished. :)
I'm 18 years old and I just started to play the cello a few weeks ago. My teacher says my learning rate is good and above average. But everyone around me laughs when I tell them my dream is to play for an orchestra :( they say I have to be realistic and that people who start playing at a older age never play as good as people who started young. It really puts me down. You're videos are amazing btw ! Inspiring !
+Arcane Hydra DO NOT listen to those people. Yes, it is a challenge, and you'll have to practice more and practice smarter than the average player (5 to 6 hours a day?) But to sat that you'll never play as well as someone who started earlier is completely false. In fact, there was a lady who started learning piano at 50. She was so passionate about it, that she became a concert pianist! She was playing with some of the best musicians during her time. Don't ever let yourself get discouraged. Work hard and do your best. I believe it's possible!!
+Sarah Joy thank you so much! I absolutely love your videos. :)
+Sarah Joy and Arcane Hydra my wife and I just started playing in April- I play Cello and she plays Violin. One thing I have learned helps me when I'm feeling discouraged is that I decided to take a video of us every few weeks or month... and I go back and listen to them, and then I play the same song at my current skill... it's so awesome and rewarding to see how far you have come! Give it a try for the first couple of years!
+Spencer Kotte oh and I'm 24 years old and she is 21. :D
awesome!!!! can you please teach modern easy pop songs for beginners? It would be amazing if you were to, I tend to feel more motivated if I know the song and my family doesn't hate me as much if they can at least relate to the song hahahahha.
I've actually thought about starting to implement those sorts of tutorials onto my channel. :)
I only play electric guitar but im gonna take advice from this video
Can you do a tutorial on The Sound of silence? Maybe in an easy version? Of course you ned to do otters first, but just maybe in the future?:))
Can you go over the cello part of ghosts of Brandenburg? I need some help with it.
Can you do a q and a . If you do my question is if you had to forget one out of all your instruments that you play what would it be
I was planning on doing a Q&A actually, and will try to remember this question!
Hey, great video! I have a question. Whenever I play the cello, my bow slides up and down and I don't know if there are ways I can work on not doing that. Please respond if you can. Thanks so much!😜
Hi there! I'm planning on making a Q&A video soon. May I save your question till then?
Can you please do a cello song? The one I want to hear is Minuet in G Major. Thanks! BTW your channel style is great, very detailed and clear.
By whom? :) And thank you very much!
Sarah Joy Sorry for the very late reply. The composer is Bach. If there are many pieces, you can choose one because I don't mind.
*don't really mind
I recently learned the 1st movement of the Elgar Cello Concerto in E min. and am starting to look at the 2nd movement and I was wondering if you had any specific tips about the piece if you know it. I'm really excited to learn the 2nd movement and my dream is to perform it with an orchestra but it seems pretty daunting to be play that fast all the way up the cello. Have a great day!
That's a wonderful piece to learn! I would not feel comfortable giving advice as I am still refining things myself. Perhaps someday when I am a little more confident. :)
Sarah Joy Thanks (:
Hello, so blessed to have found your videos, thank you for the time and effort you put into making these, they are invaluable. I would love if you could do a tutorial/cover of Charms by Abel Korzeniowski, (the main melody), And/Or, Northbound Train by Martin Phipps?? 🙏🙏 Could you maybe point me in the direction of some good beginner resources? I would appreciate that. I can't afford a teacher(we're about to have our fifth kiddo) but I LOVE music, it's ability to express/appreciate the good, the true and the beautiful; the things with fighting for! I am dying to learn on my $30 cello my Grama got me from eBay, wish me luck. 😅 I figure it will be a lifelong pursuit but I also can't see myself EVER giving up. Thanks again, God bless.
I trying to get advice because I just started orchestra and about to audition for honor orchestra any advice please your amazing thanks..😯👌
I think I actually might have a pre-performance tutorial. You might try to find it. :)
Sarah Joy yes I dI'd make it to the honor orchestra it was amazing thanks XD!!!
I've always said "practice makes better
Hi, I hope you're doing fine. I think i've been following your youtube for several months. I was hoping you could do a tutorial (or some sort of chat) about negative feeling towars music/instrument, like despair about future with your instrument, feeling depressed when you play, not having energy or will to study/play. Greetings from a place way too south in the globe (;
Hi! I don't know if this will help, but you might see if it does: ua-cam.com/video/II3iC8osaEc/v-deo.html
There's a part 2 to this video as well. Greetings from Texas. :)
Tierra del Fuego?
I'm 14, and have been playing the cello for 3 years. My private instructor is pushing me (successfully) to play pieces such as Vivaldi double cello concerto in g minor, the six suites (I'm on the second as of now) and tarentella. He said that I always need to work on my shifting and I was wondering if you had any tips for me.
Hi there! You might find this helpful: ua-cam.com/video/Z-HGREGJe1o/v-deo.html
Can you make a video about cello posture? I have problem on position my cello..
I put it down on the list of tutorials to make. Thanks for the suggestion!
I agree. I have a huge problem with correct posture. So it would be great if you could upload a video to help :)
Awesome video btw! Just like always ^_^
Sarah, as a teacher how much time do you recomend to study a day? Im studying cello for 1 half year and last week I start learn the 4th position, to be a professional cellist, how many years? I have a lot doubts I fell my teacher its look like, blaah okay you can resolve by yourself... Thanks for your vids and congrats for your lessons!!! (sorry about my english)
The time that it takes to become a professional cellist is a different amount for each person. It depends on your natural talent, the amount of time you practice, etc.. But I suppose to give you an idea, I've been playing for almost 19 years now. I had played for 13 years before I joined a professional orchestra.
woow a lot of time hehehe, but this is what I want for my life hehehe, so how old was you when start study cello? thank you vey much for answer me Sarah, I´m you fan and your vids and tutorials inspire me!!
thank you
I need your help with something. I'm a guitarist, and I'm left handed. However, I play right handed guitar. I want to start playing cello. Do you advise I get a left handed cello, or should I continue down the right handed instruments?
Love your videos btw, I subscribed!
+SnoOpDoGGfan100 Hi! Thanks for subbing! Tbh, I've never looked into left handed cellos. I don't even know if those exist. My dad is left handed and he plays a regular violin.
Sarah Joy well then excuse my ignorance hahah thanks for responding!
@SarahJoy, how many pieces should you practice at once? Is it okay to work on several, or should you just work on a few? Which will help you progress the most?
If you divide it into bite-sized categories, you can work on quite a few things at once. I split my time into - scales/exercises/etudes, Bach, repertoire, and chamber music. Stick with maybe one or two pieces in each of these categories, and fewer if you are a beginner.
🌹
2x speed works pretty good with this video
If I mess up I just stop and replay the whole song
That might get a bit frustrating in the long run!
Sarah Joy I normally don't play songs that long but once I get better i think I'll stop :)
Do you offer private lessons?
I do! My studio is currently full, but I have a waiting list. If you are interested, email me at sarahjoyrecordings@gmail.com
But do you replay at comments??
If you can play it slowly, you can play it quickly. -TwoSetViolin
Sarah joy, I think when someone says, "practice makes perfect" I think they mean when you practice and practice and practice you will eventually have it perfectly. 😂
Oh I know haha, but it's a common misconception that any sort of practicing will help. A lot of times, if you practice incorrectly, it will impede your progress.
how many cellos do you have? hahaha
Just two that I actually use. The others are super cheap ones that I learned on.
That's what I'm doing too. I brought it to the local little music shop where they have a couple of instrument techs and am having some repairs done in order to be able to learn to play it. Wasn't expecting that expense, but they agreed to do the bare minimum in order for me to be able to play it. They're going to put a new bridge on it, and new strings, and maybe sand down the fingerboard a little. I told them I didn't care about what it looked like (like, they don't have to repaint the fingerboard), as long as I could play it. So, I got them down from the initial $430 to $125. When, and if, I actually feel like I've learned it well enough, I can invest in a better one. So Sarah, I may be one of your most challenging students, but I'm definitely also your most willing! = )
