I started to do that and I can perceive better where I need to improve. I totally agree!!!
1. Good consistent hand frame. Swing elbow to position frame over whichever string.
2. Soft supple hands and joints - not stressed.
3. Awarenss of how hand feels at different notes.
4. Cross check with open strings and singing resonances - this is possible for many notes.
5. Listenm, explore and take your time. Adjust position slowly to the right pitch.

This is really good advice. You may have already provided it but equipment and the set up is important. Once you start picking up speed and the magic starts to happen you will want to make sure that the bow, the fiddle/violin , the strings on it and the bridge, it stays in tune, is helping you reach that goal of "OH!!! , That sounded really good" NOTE: there are days you nail it and days you go did I just start to learn how to play this thing today? ...perseverance pays off. Nothing sweeter than I'm getting there
It also helps to get a new string annually. Until a month ago, I've been playing on a GDA string that's more than 5 years old until I my D string snapped and decided to replace them all. After trying my new string, It blew my mind how the ringing notes are much more open, vibrant, louder, and easier to hear. The margin of not hearing the resonance of the open strings became bigger unlike my old strings.
Old strings are also sticky where whereas new ones are smoother

thanks for the tips. THe open ringtones are useful for only 4 notes, though. Out 12 notes, it is only a third of the whole range. What are the advices for the other 2 thirds?

I have really small hands and I'm really struggling with tip 1. I can't keep my fourth finger hovering above the correct place, I have to stretch to put it down and then it kind of springs back. Does anyone have any tips?? :)
Hi! Violin teacher here. Usually, when my babies struggle with their fourth finger (or any at all, but most noticably the fourth), it's bevause they have tension in tehir hand. Could it be that your wrist is not straight? Is your left shoulder relaxed?
Two excercises that may help:
* Lightbulb: pretend you're screwing in a lightbulb with your left hand, holding it just with your fingertips and a straight, relaxed wrist. After doing this slowly a couple times to get a feel for it, you notice you're late and have to screw it in quickly now! Three quick (but relaxed!) screws of the lightbulb! Stop the motion with the side of the pinky facing you. When putting the fingers on a string now, you may notice your range has expanded.
* Kitten-paw - Tiger-claw: way up in a high position put your fourth finger on a string. Cramp all of them together to make a tiny kitten-paw! Now streeeeetch the first finger as far down as you can, letting everybody follow - except the fourth! That one's staying put. Come back to kitten-paw, stretch back into tiger-claw ...............

As a Violin major graduated student staring to become a teacher i have found your video very useful, i just want to ask if its reallty necessary to move your arm during string crossing in first position, for example arm towards more right during string crossing to G string,for me personally i only do that in 3rd position,what should i tell my students if i saw them moving drastically? I usually told them only adjust alittle bit if they struggle, but moving a lot is kinda a waste of energy, especially in fast pieces.
Yes, I think it does depend on context and the motion can be subtle!
I disagree really. The Structure and form of the left hand is very important to preserve, in order to stay in tune, and if your left arm is too rigid and doesn't move with changing strings, then that form will have to change, making correct intonation very difficult. I find I am often giving the opposite advice to my pupils and asking them to loosen up the arm and let it flow with the changing of strings, keeping the shape of the left hand more consistant.

What's the concert tuning? A4 = 419Hz? Mozart's tuning fork was somewhere around there.
Concert tuning varies from group to group, but for ensembles playing on modern instruments tuning is usually between A=440-442.

Practice scales. Play sustained, slowly and into the string. The bowing is very important. Spend the time to correct the notes as you play.
Sorry to say it, but in music it's impossible to have more than one perfect intervall. When you tune your strings in fifths perfects, you can't use in the same time ocraves perfects! Simply it will be out of tune. Try this accord: G string empty, E on D string perfect with A string. Then listen the difference if you compare this E with G string! Which of two do you prefer? But you can continue with B on A string and E empty string. Do you like both possibles accords GEBE and how you choose one of them?! You must know that the violin is like the piano. If you have 4 fixed places for 4 notes, then ALL the notes must to be with fixed places. Or if you use perfect fifths when you tune your violin, it's impossible to stay in tune! Only the unisson can stay perfect. ALL other intervals must to be tempereds. If no, you will play out of tune all the time. The intonation problem can't be traited whitout prealable education. Bravo for trying to do a video about the right intonation, but the question is more complex....
For conclusion I can say a little hint, try to hear in your head the next note before to play her...
Why are so many of these great tutors speaking with 'vocal fry'? It is so annoying, and often makes their articulation unclear, and what they are saying difficult to understand!
