Except the "Band" is just one guy(Tom Scholz) doing everything(Harmonies included) besides lead vocals in his basement studio in the early 70s.

Boston was genius. Tom Scholtz mastered the transition from the angry minor 7th exploding in a triumphant major 8th several times in Foreplay alone. Every single syllable was supported. Your reaction was great! It was the SAME reaction we fogies had in 1976. RIP Brad Delp, the nicest guy in rock. He gave us so much more than a feeling.

The first time I saw Boston in concert they were the opening act & I'd never even heard of them. Truth be told, I can't remember who they were opening for but standing on a packed arena floor hearing Foreplay for the first time still stands out as one of the best moments I've ever experienced at a concert. You just knew you were hearing something extraordinary. All these years later this song still gets to me. It is a classic & deservedly so.

Bostons first album is still seen as one of the best debut albums of all time . Every song... I mean every song is insanely good , just push play and sit back for an experience . The bass player for boston is an eletronics genius . He designed and built all the amps and effects systems for the band. Then patented all items he made. It is all but impossable to get bostons sound from any other brand of effects to sound like they do ... The bass player also played all instruments, and recorded the album with one other person in his parents basement ... Even after the better part of 50 years this album is still in my collection and played on a regular basis

Saw them in concert at the Sun Dome in Tampa, FL. in 1995. What a crowd! While waiting for the concert to start, we saw a man with greying hair in his' 50's walk in, wearing a Tux. His date was a stunning blonde in a light blue floor length evening gown with a tiara, diamond earrings/necklace and white elbow length gloves. 10 feet behind them, in walked a woman in her 30's wearing a black bustier, leather short shorts, fishnet stockings, thigh-high boots and black leather gloves. In her hand was a silver chained dog leash. This leash was attach to the collar of the man she was leading in. He was wearing black combat boots, black leather pants, a black leather vest (no shirt), spiked leather dog collar and a full head black leather mask with only breathing holes! I told my friends "This Concert just went to the next level"!! The concert was awesome!

One of the best rock songs of all time. Period. A sonic explosion of high energy harmony and raucous guitar play. And the crystal clear incomparable voice of lead singer Brad Delp. People still love it and can’t believe what they’re hearing 47 years later - just like I couldn’t when I first heard it as a sophomore in high school. And remember - this is a DEBUT ALBUM. Tom Scholz is a genius. And lBrad Delp a revelation. The whole album is good beyond hope.

This song is PERFECTION !!! I was 13 yrs old and in in Jr. High School when this album came out, I used to listen to it on my older brother’s stereo when he was at work during the summer it came out, (August 1976). I wasn’t supposed to use my brothers stereo because a friend of mine broke the 8 track player on it a few months before, but I did any way, lol. A perfect album from beginning to end, not a bad song on the album. Pick just about any track on the album and I guarantee you’ll like it.
More Than A Feeling, Peace Of Mind, Foreplay/Longtime, Rock & Roll Band, Smokin’, Hitch A Ride, Something About You, Let Me Take You Home Tonight.
The album has gone 17x Platinum (That’s 17,000,000 copies sold) since it’s release in 1976, that’s impressive.
It would be 2 years before the bands second album, Don’t Look Back, be released in 1978, in those days it was unheard of for a band, especially one who’s debut album was such a tremendous success, to take 2 years to release a follow up album, but Tom Sholtz didn’t want to release it until he was satisfied with its production, and even though it was released in 1978 Tom wanted to spend more time on the album before its release, he was a perfectionist when it came to his music.
Spend some more time with Boston, I think you’ll be happy.
    Stay Cool 😎 and…
    \m/ Stay Metal \m/

Listen to the entire album and in your mind travel back in time to 1976 there are no personal computers, no cell towers or phones no internet no digital anything MTV is years away there’s 3 guys in a basement 1 of which is Tom Scholz, an MIT grad working for Polaroid, he records this in his basement engineers and produces it with Sib on drums and Brad on vocals Tom plays everything else on the album.
You couldn’t go anywhere in 1976 that this masterpiece album wasn’t being blasted. It to this day is ahead of our time and in 76 it just blew everyone away

    • @neechee5150
      @neechee5150 Рік тому

@haroldjones8023 It is a well known and well documented fact that ALL of Brads vocals sans the vocals on Let Me Take You Home were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C on their Quad Eight Console and two inch analog tape. In addition it is well documented as fact that the entire song Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad was recorded by producer John Boylan at The Record Plant LA. It is also a well documented fact that Barry plays on three songs on this record. Tom was forced to admit this in Court. The vast majority of the electric guitar playing on Foreplay and Long Time including the solo is in fact Barry. It is also a well documented fact that Fran plays bass on two songs and Fran is playing bass on Foreplay. Brad plays 12 string acoustic on Let Me Take You Home.
It is also a well documented fact that Boylan made Tom re-record all of the drum tracks and acoustic instrument tracks before the record could be mixed because Toms drum and acoustic instrument tracks were amateurish and not up to standard for a professional recording. Tom was tutored in mic technique and how to record drums and acoustic instruments by engineer Paul Grupp who was hired by Boylan to get Tom up to speed on how to record drums and acoustic instruments.
It is also a well documented fact that this record was not mixed in Toms basement studio. His studio could not have even began to pull off mixing this record. This record was mixed at Westlake Studios in LA by Boylan, engineer Warren Dewey and Tom.

Boston was the first band I saw in concert. It was the fall of 1978 and 3 college buddies and I set out on a 70 mile trip to see Boston in Minneapolis. Sammy Hagar warmed up for them (The Red Rocker). They opened with "Rock And Roll Band", one of my favorites. Great concert!

Side note: Tom Scholtz wrote this song back in 1969 but finalized it for production in 1975-6 for their debut album, and it shows.

Pretty good from a dude who just wanted to explore inventing studio/sound technology and sell his stuff. He had to piece the band together basically, after the album was made (except the singer). Legendary stuff.

The part about piecing the band together is a legend. Barry Goudrea and Brad Delp had been playing early versions of most of the songs on the Boston album in a band with him for several years and worked on early demos with him. Fran Sheehan had also played some gigs with them, though he wasn't a regular member of the band. That band was called "Mother's Milk" and the bass player had quit before Epic accepted a demo. Tom was told to get rid of the drummer on the demo, Jim Masdea. The band Boston was basically Mother's MIlk with a new drummer and bass player.

@@mcseforsale I guess you don't know much about the band's history. That's OK. Enjoy the music.

That is a masterpiece.....Tom Scholz (plays everything except vocals and drums) and his inventiveness is fantastic. Brad Delp on vocals (RIP) is fire. I agree, this is much better than More Than A Feeling. Great reaction - you appreciate and communicate so well.

Not quite, according to Tom Scholz,, Barry Goudreau played the rhythm guitar on Foreplay and "the awesome lead" on Long Time. Barry also played on Let Me Take You Home Tonight. Fran Sheehan played bass on Foreplay and Let Me Take You Home Tonight. Brad Delp also played acoustic guitar on Let Me Take You Home Tonight.

Don't agree that this is much better then "More Than A Feeling". It's just a very different song. MTAF is just as good.

Great review! Actually "Foreplay" was the instrumental at the beginning, the song was called "Long Time", This is the how the album starts! Makes you want to lose yourself in the rest of the album! 🤘😈
