I was 15 when this came out and listend to the whole album with my best friend. We never heard anything like this and was completely blown away...... Boston's music has stood the test of time. They are AMAZING!!
Except the "Band" is just one guy(Tom Scholz) doing everything(Harmonies included) besides lead vocals in his basement studio in the early 70s. Unheard of back then.
Everything about this album is relaxing, inspirational, upbeat music! No other band could ever put out an all out bad ass collaboration of beautiful music ❤!
YOU CANNOT GO WRONG w anything on this first album, hell I’d even extend that sentiment to their second “Don’t Look Back” as well !!! Timeless music full of everything especially Brad’s beautiful voice ❤️❤️ there is also a stunner on the 3rd one called “To Be a Man” check it out T
2 great tenors, 2 guitars, and an album with every individual song hit the top ten on the charts. An unthinkable possibility in today's music landscape.
Best debut album is American history, and I was fortunate to see them 7 times, way back at Ohio State in 1976. Incredible talents, and killer rock and roll.
Boston was genius. Tom Scholtz mastered the transition from the angry minor 7th exploding in a triumphant major 8th several times in Foreplay alone. Every single syllable was supported. Your reaction was great! It was the SAME reaction we fogies had in 1976. RIP Brad Delp, the nicest guy in rock. He gave us so much more than a feeling.
The production quality of this album too was ahead of its time. I had the opportunity to go and listen through the masters during my time at Musicians Institute. I got to go through every track and literally dissect their recording methods. It was brilliant
Entire album is a Masterpiece, and is considered the GOAT intro album by any Rock band ever by a large majority of Rock music critics. I can't argue that either.
Yes! Their debut is one of the greatest Rock debuts ever. One of the best produced albums ever. You want a similar experience....go down that Boston rabbit hole.
Every. Single. Song. on this debut album blasted from our radios, college dorm rooms, and cars during the late '70's... and even when I went back to Penn State for weekends over the years... I still heard Boston, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac and the mighty Earth Wind & Fire pouring out of windows and cars. Gave me hope for newer generations!!
This track and "More Than a Feeling" were both on their debut album; the whole album (8 songs) is 🔥🔥🔥. Other songs on that album you need to check out: "Peace of Mind", "Smokin'", "Hitch a Ride", and "Rock and Roll Band".
I so much love and respect and agree with your reaction. I’ve loved Boston since my university days way back in the late ‘80s, and I’ve always thought this song sequence was like rock-opera in small.
The first time I saw Boston in concert they were the opening act & I'd never even heard of them. Truth be told, I can't remember who they were opening for but standing on a packed arena floor hearing Foreplay for the first time still stands out as one of the best moments I've ever experienced at a concert. You just knew you were hearing something extraordinary. All these years later this song still gets to me. It is a classic & deservedly so.
Bostons first album is still seen as one of the best debut albums of all time . Every song... I mean every song is insanely good , just push play and sit back for an experience . The bass player for boston is an eletronics genius . He designed and built all the amps and effects systems for the band. Then patented all items he made. It is all but impossable to get bostons sound from any other brand of effects to sound like they do ... The bass player also played all instruments, and recorded the album with one other person in his parents basement ... Even after the better part of 50 years this album is still in my collection and played on a regular basis
Tom Scholtz. A incredibly gifted writer / musician / visionary etc.. Every once in a while in life someone shows up years ahead of us. Tom Schultz you the man!
My favorite Boston song. I loved your reaction to it 🙂I grew up on this, the best music ever.70's and early 80's. I feel almost privileged to have been there for it.
Saw them in concert at the Sun Dome in Tampa, FL. in 1995. What a crowd! While waiting for the concert to start, we saw a man with greying hair in his' 50's walk in, wearing a Tux. His date was a stunning blonde in a light blue floor length evening gown with a tiara, diamond earrings/necklace and white elbow length gloves. 10 feet behind them, in walked a woman in her 30's wearing a black bustier, leather short shorts, fishnet stockings, thigh-high boots and black leather gloves. In her hand was a silver chained dog leash. This leash was attach to the collar of the man she was leading in. He was wearing black combat boots, black leather pants, a black leather vest (no shirt), spiked leather dog collar and a full head black leather mask with only breathing holes! I told my friends "This Concert just went to the next level"!! The concert was awesome!
One of the best rock songs of all time. Period. A sonic explosion of high energy harmony and raucous guitar play. And the crystal clear incomparable voice of lead singer Brad Delp. Glad you appreciate this band, some terrific songs by these guys...my favorite band. Think I'll stick around, see what other rock tunes you bring...nice reaction!
Your genuine hype for this was great. And dude, in all these years, this song still hits as hard as it did back then. Seriously. Not many have done that for me. You def got beamed up to the mothership with it; just being blessed with hearing it for the first time.
Yeah I couldn’t get enough of these guys when I was a kid. I like how you described it as an experience. I was lucky to grow with this epic song as an “experience” and of some others from that era…Bohemian Rhapsody, Tom Sawyer, Stairway to Heaven etc. Perfect reaction!
You can't be more right saying the opening sounds like the album cover. Yep, there was a special look-n-feel to that mid/late 70s sci-fi art, so nostalgic...

@haroldjones8023 It is a well known and well documented fact that ALL of Brads vocals sans the vocals on Let Me Take You Home were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C on their Quad Eight Console and two inch analog tape. In addition it is well documented as fact that the entire song Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad was recorded by producer John Boylan at The Record Plant LA. It is also a well documented fact that Barry plays on three songs on this record. Tom was forced to admit this in Court. The vast majority of the electric guitar playing on Foreplay and Long Time including the solo is in fact Barry. It is also a well documented fact that Fran plays bass on two songs and Fran is playing bass on Foreplay. Brad plays 12 string acoustic on Let Me Take You Home. It is also a well documented fact that Boylan made Tom re-record all of the drum tracks and acoustic instrument tracks before the record could be mixed because Toms drum and acoustic instrument tracks were amateurish and not up to standard for a professional recording. Tom was tutored in mic technique and how to record drums and acoustic instruments by engineer Paul Grupp who was hired by Boylan to get Tom up to speed on how to record drums and acoustic instruments. Pretty good from a dude who just wanted to explore inventing studio/sound technology and sell his stuff. He had to piece the band together basically, after the album was made (except the singer). Legendary stuff.
The part about piecing the band together is a legend. Barry Goudrea and Brad Delp had been playing early versions of most of the songs on the Boston album in a band with him for several years and worked on early demos with him. Fran Sheehan had also played some gigs with them, though he wasn't a regular member of the band. That band was called "Mother's Milk" and the bass player had quit before Epic accepted a demo. Not quite, according to Tom Scholz,, Barry Goudreau played the rhythm guitar on Foreplay and "the awesome lead" on Long Time. Barry also played on Let Me Take You Home Tonight. Don't agree that this is much better then "More Than A Feeling". It's just a very different song. MTAF is just as good.
Great review! Actually "Foreplay" was the instrumental at the beginning, the song was called "Long Time", This is the how the album starts! Makes you want to lose yourself in the rest of the album! 🤘😈
Every song on this album is good!❤🔥
