    The Australia Day Concert
    Sydney's Domain Park - January 26, 1989
    Starring: Normie Rowe (Jean Valjean), John Diedrich (Javert), Debbie Byrne (Fantine), Anthony Warlow (Enjolras), Peter Cousens (Marius), William Zappa & Robyn Arthur (Thénardiers), Sylvie Paladino (Eponine), Marina Prior (Cosette)
    Edited and remastered by me.
    This was one of the earliest (if not the earliest) concert stagings of Les Mis. It was performed outdoors as part of the Australia Day celebrations in Sydney's Domain Park, and remains to date the largest concert production, having attracted an audience of approximately 125,000. It contains several principle members of the original Australian company (Normie, Byrne, Warlow, Marina, and Robyn). Its a fantastic production worth watching. Enjoy!

      In all productions it's an ensemble cast. I don't remember the breakdown but some actors played several parts. The chain gang was made up of thenardier and his gang I think. I believe the bishop was also one of the students, can't remember which ones. The only ones I know for sure are enjolras, marius and grantaire

    An excellent production of a show I've seen I believe 38 times on Broadway, on the American national tour, in Paris and, especially, in August of 1988, in London with Aussie Laura Hamilton as understudy Eponine. She was great, as she is here on this video, reminiscent of the original and best Eponine, Frances Ruffele. That's Laura, and not Sylvie Paladino as Eponine. Thanks very much for posting... I will never grow weary of hearing and and seeing Les Mis.

      MiserablesMoments just about to go to bed when your message popped in. After seeing Les Mis with Laura as Eponine in London during the first week of an 11-week backpacking trip around Europe, I went into deep withdrawal ‘cause I couldn’t find the soundtrack to hear as I traveled. As soon as I got home to Connecticut, I booked Broadway tix for the following spring (earliest I could get)... from then on, it was nearly every year and often two or three times a year, mostly in NYC, also in Paris in October ‘91, through the several revivals and often the national touring company. I miss it dearly now and hope it’ll be back again fairly soon.
      Guessing you’re Aussie? I have hundreds of Australian relatives, many in or near Melbourne (eight of my Mom’s Mom’s Irish siblings emigrated to Australia in the early 20th century). So, how many times have you seen Les Mis and is it touring now there?

    Anthony Warlow! The only other person to come close to him as Enjolras for me is Ramin Karimloo, but hearing him again here, it’s still Warlow. And his version of “This is the Moment” is my single favorite showtune.

    Don't people use an American accent for Australian productions of Broadway musicals?

    • @beethockmtee8565
      @beethockmtee8565 3 роки тому +5

      No, because this is not a Broadway musical. It originated in the West End and is performed in this clip in Australia. Not sure why, how, or where Broadway and America would come into it. Furthermore, it's set in France, making American accents completely inappropriate and the English accents the best compromise for an audience not used to hearing French accents constantly.

    • @ProuvaireJean
      @ProuvaireJean 2 роки тому +2

      @@beethockmtee8565 Having seen Les Miz all over the world, hearing it sung in American accents actually sounds weird to my ears, especially the American pronunciations of words like "past" and "fast" in "At the End of the Day", and changing lyrics like "sitting flat on your bum doesn't buy any bread" to "sitting flat on your ass".
      Of course, the story of Les Miz is universal and - being set in France - there's no logical reason it should be sung with British accents in America. (Or with American accents in Australia of course, which is your point.)

  • @michaeljavert4635
    @michaeljavert4635 2 роки тому

    Wondering if anyone knows the meaning of "laziness". Just Butchered the hell out of this. "Once upon a time, the end." Either do, or do not but don't half ass it. Also, it would be nice if people would have sung, but for whatever reason thought growling like a dog was appropriate. Either people are getting stupider, or people just don't care anymore.

    • @Silver_Warden
      @Silver_Warden 2 роки тому +7

      This is from 1989, so not sure where the "people are getting stupider" comment comes from. Originally, this show was performed as a rock opera, even the original French production from the 1980s sounds much more rough, raw and growly than the current productions. And yes, this is a completely valid style of singing, everything else is purely subjective. While I do agree that the show was needlessly shortened & corners were majorly cut for this concert, it's still a pretty cool thing to exist and a very rare recording.
