As a commonwealth 'cousin' in Canada, I have long envied the beauty and good planning of Australian cities. Its been obvious for many decades that Aussie developers are determined to build some of the most handsome skyscrapers in the world. Doesn't surprise me that the latest building technique has turned up in Melbourne. Yes please, more videos about lesser known cities.
I hope there are more videos on Australia, such as the construction boom in Brisbane and Gold Coast currently.

Construction boom in Brisbane that's leaving far NQ dry of funds. All tax payers money goes into Brisbane while smaller cities like Townsville, Cairns, etc are left out. This is why far NQ needs to be its own state. Townsville has some of the worst unemployment and crime rate in the country, we could really do with the extra cash flow...
You should do videos about lesser known cities' skylines (or anything really). I love hearing about New York city and other well-known cities, but hearing about Melbourne was really interesting to me since I never knew anything about it. Its sparked my curiosity about the city, and if you cover other cities in any capacity im sure the same would happen.
You should visit it's the second most livable city was the first for the past 6 years I think.
its a good city, just avoid northern/western suburbs, full of immigrants from poorer countries.

Euan Maclean I have to be honest, I live in Melbourne and have been living here since I was born but honestly avoid the western suburbs, the western suburbs have the highest crime rate in all of Melbourne

I have enjoyed watching Collins House being constructed, so glad its story is part of the B1M channel. The construction industry in Melbourne is leaning towards prefab and CLT high rise constructions, many good things to come down here.
Love this channel, so educational. As someone who has loved architecture since I was a small child, my only complaint is that I didn't find this channel sooner!

Unfortunately, karma has rounded the corner and what English colonizers did to indigenoUS people is now being done to citizens of multiple generations. They aren't the buyers.
Chinese, Russians and Arabs buy these properties and indeed push the price through the roof. Call it gentrification on steroids. Educated working Aussies can't compete with millionaires and billionaires.
Hence, the Tiny House movement is sending Aussies into the hinterlands.

In Milan, there is a new area where building a lot of new skyscrapers, near the famous "Bosco Verticale". There is a very innovative apartment building "Giardini D'inverno" whit greenhouses outside from every apartment and a domotic system control. Check it out!

It has been some what of a challenge to understand the diction of the B1M British narrators.
This particular video as well as some of the others recently available are much clearer.
The ones with Fred Mills are virtually impossible to understand unless one is
"English".

You should check out Optus Centre at 367 Collins Street Melbourne. There is a pair of nesting peregrine falcons on a ledge at the 34th floor. There is constant live video streaming of the birds.

Like the building, but lets see if they can fill it. Things aren’t going great in Melbourne’s real estate bubble ATM...
Developments in Melbourne must be 75% let before construction can commence, speculative developments are not encouraged.
New York wasn't the first to built skinny skyscrapers, i live in south Brazil and there's a city called Balneário Camboriú that has been constructing skinny towers for more then a decade and they are really skinny, more then this ones shown in the video. Btw, love the channel content. You guys rock!
Call me when these techniques are being used for something other than luxury apartments. Innovation in housing should not be restricted to the rich.
Yeah, we need cheap houses in the world. Most of the people who lived in developing or underdeveloped countries live in slums.
Singapore is the prime example of government driving the technology innovation in construction industry. These types of prefabricated prefinished volumetric construction (PPVC) has been widely applied in Singapore public housing construction
It isn't restricted to the rich a lot of prefabricated houses are built in developing countries to provide low-income housing
Main problem is pricing for these project.
Many houses is already made out of prefab materials or walls. All the wall in my house is prefab concrete wall. Ikea modular kitchen, sofa sections etc also make tons of differences for residentials use.
This is gonna be the most impactful amongst all of them. Many house developer in Southeast also started to use prefab modules and walls, this thing became more and more common.
This was earlier a poor man's technique. They stacked shipping containers and called them houses. This is the first time I saw someone building luxury apartments using prefab.
I hope that prefabrication becomes more widespread and helps to reduce the housing prices!

What a nightmare! Looking at the smaller building, that overhang just boxed in a bunch of balconies and windows. Building on top of each other when they're just 11 miles away from empty farmland. Maybe urban sprawl isn't such a bad thing if it stops this
urban sprawl is the worst thing for cities. Longer commute times, fewer amenities close by, low density-high carbon footprint, encroachment of urban area onto greenfield/natural areas ... there are no benefits of sprwl.

Melbourne is a gem, and the new super tall and super slim RESIDENTIAL. buildings should be hopefully built for the average middle class population, as flooding and higher sea levels may in the future be the, answer to urban housing as these can be retrofitted at the bottom level if need be. The return of using a small piece of land , and building up, must be huge...especially if they start building outside the overpriced areas in the city.
Prefabricated is ny new favourite word
This kind of construction will end up being a necessity in Canadas arctic. Currently some if of this technology is used in constructing remote arctic mining complexes. Northgate Trailer does this and have built large arctic complexes inside of a few weeks. Almost like building Rome in a Day so to speak.
Can you do more videos on environmental design? I’m thinking about studying it in college so it would be great to see more videos about it, especially form this channel. Also if anyone else has anything to say about environmental design, the pros and cons, what you need to study to succeed in the field, what the job market is like, or anything else please reply.
Well with Prefabricated Buildings you can more easily just add more layers ontop if so needed than with non-prefabricated buildings. Expand if needed, Concrete-Glass-Grass basicaly.

Oh my home town. It's kind of crazy the amount of restricted foot print high rises that have been constructed in Melbourne in the past decade. Still boggles my mind there is a market big enough to demand it.
Sometimes (personal opinion) that I feel the market is inflated to make people think there's a market. There's countless building in Toronto being built too, but I feel developers make them and people thing there's a boom as a result and rush in to buy. Almost as though the developers are artificially creating a housing boom.
@@DevinHeida Exactly you do realize how stupidly risky and irresponsible to do such a scheme. Such buildings are not free, someone has to pay for the cost. Artificial fake demand with no buyer logically is abhorrent, but greed blinds people.
You have to remember Melbourne is one of the fastest growing cities in the developed world adding 125k new people last year. We also have a very strong international student population which lease apartments and ever growing tourism demand for airbnb style properties.
@@MrOutofcontrolvideos We're also constantly growing outwards, Melbourne is one of the biggest monolithic metropolitan region in area coverage. From Mornington on the south east peninsula to north west past Craigieburn that's much more than 100km of continuous monolithic city.

It is a project called Green Spine which I do not think has been approved yet.
International design competition won by UNStudio and COX Architects, being submitted for planning approval in Q1 2019. We are very much looking forward to that one!
From a scaffolder's point of view , WOW ! We must have held up the show quite a bit , if the building flew into the sky that fast . It would be quite a feat , to keep up .
I’m not a fan of these slender buildings but this one is quite a nice design and fits in quite well. I think it’s got something to do with the fact it’s a modest building in terms of height.
@Larry David Which one? 432 Park Avenue? I hated the sight of it when I went to New York, it ruined the skyline for me. 432 is the reason for my dislike of these structures, but if architects can improve vastly on 432's design I may begin to like them more.

Sometimes, the super skinny buildings just look out of place.
In Seattle, the crane count peaked at 72 as this city has been transformed by new high-rises over the past five-years. Now, the total has fallen to the mid-40s. Toronto currently boasts the highest number at roughly 75. Regardless, Melbourne is a dynamic city that one-day I would love to visit.
Toronto has the largest crane count in North America, but Melbourne has a crane count of almost 200, and Sydney has a crane count of 320. This is due to huge migration levels plus the influx of Chinese capital (a lot of it laundered money). The crane counts will fall dramatically now though as the real estate bubble has burst and prices have already declined by almost 10% from their peak in Sydney and the price falls are increasing in percentage terms and this is occurring while economic conditions are good, although the housing downturn may end up effecting the wider economy and cause a negative feedback loop pushing the real estate market down even further.
My God, @@sthuon, that is a lot of cranes! Regarding the burst of the housing bubble... it's begun and the repercussions will be significant for everyone on the planet.

I'd imagine that these buildings are not as structurally efficient; you'd need more and/or thicker structural beams to get the same amount of wind and earth quake resistance. More commentary on such engineering issues would be appreciated.

There's three units available for rent right now. The cheapest is $49,500. If you have the money buy a penthouse unit. There's one available on the 95th floor for $82 million.

I think there’s another building planned on that side which is why there’s a huge concrete wall. Not 100% sure though

I wonder how the reduced floor size impact fire safety? How would you escape from the top if an apartment under you is engulfed in flames? I guess there are plenty of engineering controls to ensure this never happens.

I'm the village idiot in Melbourne and some things just don't make sense to me, like Hickory Group.
Hickory Group own their own concrete precast factory and they are using Euro Precast (located in Dandenong on the outskirts of Melbourne) concrete panels on not only their own job site but a job site that will be used as a case study by the well educated?
Fun fact: They first used the pre-fabricated building trick in San Antonio, Texas
