    A really big issue I experience living in Germany: in many places there are construction works going on in cities, towns and villages. Either it's a project of a single or two houses, or it's an entire neighbourhood, but hardly any of those construction projects are thinking BIG. I just moved into a brandnew apartment building ... a 6 unit building. Such buildings cover the need for only very few people or families, not the masses of people. There are multi-unit apartment buildings around ... old ones, in the poorer areas of the towns and cities. Of course there's also the extreme like modern apartment towers for the top few percent of earners, again rather a niche market than a solution for a great number of people. There aren't really many projects combining 1) a high number of units, 2) high quality or at least modern style and 3) being affordable for average earners. Modern apartment blocks or apartment towers can offer a normal level of high quality living environment and they are seen in so many countries, but not that much in Germany. Apartment blocks always have a sense of low quality, poor, dangerous etc here which is pretty sad IMO. Honestly, often you can determine how poor a neighborhood is by counting how many floors the buildings have...
    So they'll continue to build relatively small apartment buildings with only a few units each, blending in with older single family houses in the neighborhood. I don't really like that trend

    Lets not forget one of the most important demand side factors driving up costs. Housing has become increasingly leveraged, allowing people to make larger purchases relative to their income but also leads to speculative growth.
    More of an economics than development issue but important to understand in the housing sector.

I like their videos because they are interesting and expose me to new and interesting things that I otherwise would have never been exposed to. They may take footage from other sites and videos and compile it into their own video, but what else do you expect them to do? Do you really think that a (relatively) small UA-cam channel could afford to just buy some expensive film and camera equipment, travel around the world, and collect their own footage of all of these places? That would be rather idiotic to assume such a thing. Anyway, I hope you eventually learn to treat people on the internet as actual people. Have a good life my dude!

    If you don't mind me presenting a very well known concern on this extremely important topic, it would be towards the dream of the single family home with the quintessential backyard / front yard and how many people in the world want that type of living.
    There is only so much land on this planet that there's no way in hell it could ever accomodate the desire of building standalone houses for every person on Earth that wants one.
    Urban densification is going to be sorely needed. What would you guys say to those who still desire the dream of having a single family home. Should they give it up entirely? Since it is not an "efficient" use of land per se.

    The same is happening in the San Francisco Bay Area, where a “starter” home costs about a million USD. Very few people, even high-earning, double-income families, can afford this. Increasingly, housing is purchased by foreign investors and rented to local residents. My tiny cottage could get a rent of about $4,000/month, if I didn’t live in it.

    We are facing so many challenges. The more we can develop construction delivery methods the better. We need to build quality structures on time and budget. The cost of construction has inflated, workers are getting paid less, have more responsibility and fatalities are higher than ever. The bottom line is that there will always be a need for both modular and on-site building. Until on-site building can compete with quality, time and ultimately fairly with price, the industry will be broken. I think the market and demand is large enough to sustain both methods but unfortunately they are competing when bidding jobs. It's time for change! I love listening to the new ideas and am happy that it is something designers and engineers are thinking about. Great video here as always!

    This video shows there’s so much more to construction beyond mechanics and materials science. There’s understanding of human psychology and anthropology and society. And the creators of this video obviously have that.

    Unselfish view of the world, interesting subject and professional editorial work by Fred Mills, however...
    the mad housing shortage phenomenon in the UK, particularly England, even more southeastern England, has several reasons that have been alluded to by Fred Mills, the major reason which hasn't been emphasized enough, has been the uncontrolled immigration into the UK mostly from third world countries, in the past 25 years or so. Building and building and building seems like the correct reactive response to the problem but it is akin to dropping more water into a bucket with a hole: the water keeps leaking out! Also, building more higher density areas in an already large city like London seems clever on paper at least in the short term: less people will commute to work or commute shorter distance to work and leisure. However, in the long term it also creates other problems that need to be addressed; raising density means those areas will put pressure on the local borough's resources, more people for the same schools, same health centres, same police stations, same firefighters, same tube, same buses, and it will soon come to a point of rupture. It already has in the UK, more England than Wales and Scotland, and public services won't be enough for the increased population of local residents. Add to this the fact that London natives are very keen on one-family houses or terraced houses, and tower-blocks of flats are not much loved......
    We're supposed to be in the IT era, the internet era, the age of digitalisation and long-distance communication at a click, is there much point in continuing to stimulate the growth of big cities, and having more people per square mile and thus turning Paris or London (over 9 million each) into ugly new New Yorks or LAs (over 12 million each) or into chaotic mega-cities with dreadful mega-problems, like Lagos, Sao Paulo, or Mexico City?

    Don't you think that maybe complete renovations of existing council estate buildings, could solve a divisive issue of gentrification and improve the standards of living in deprived areas, without a huge rise in costs of living? Maybe renovations of certain estates by improving the internal architecture, while maintaining the external structure could prove to be better for residents, such as the place in South London which was shown in the video

    Although Tokyo is an example of how to cram millions of people into apartments, Japanese house prices are decreasing because of sensible migration policies. To add to this, Japan has managed to maintain a steady economy despite having a decreasing population. An incessantly increasing population due to immigration is not the way to go for Western Europe, it’s not sustainable in any way.

    • @carlosandleon
      @carlosandleon 5 років тому

      your statement feeds a false us vs them mentality. Although I agree we need mor strict immigration laws, we can't outright refuse immigration altogether

    • @carlosandleon
      @carlosandleon 5 років тому

      And we do have a refugee crisis and we do not want to commit a human rights violation do we?

    • @Miquelalalaa
      @Miquelalalaa 5 років тому

      Carlos Leon I clearly didn’t state that immigration should be restricted entirely, but net migration should be as close to zero as possible.
      Oh and to try and state that we have some sort of moral obligation (the pressure of which is only applied to Western Europe) is ridiculous. Most immigrants are not refugees, and the war in Syria is almost over. This instinctive moral grandstanding and faux-virtue with the assumption that somehow Western Europe is compelled to accommodate anyone and use their resources and tax money to pay is ridiculous. It’s not proportionate either. Why do you think they are coming to Europe, despite the fact that there are many other places that don’t see conflict. Anyway refugees are a very small part of the bigger picture, most immigrants are economic migrants and we shouldn’t have to sacrifice things to allow them to come here in masses.
      Anyway, with the current rate of migration it will be hard to maintain the lifestyle that they come for in the first place.

    • @Miquelalalaa
      @Miquelalalaa 5 років тому +2

      Carlos Leon It’s not an us vs them mentality, rather it’s addressing basic logistics of population. It’s sad that so many people have such an instinctively emotional reaction to immigration, and only believe in immigration having positive consequences.

    • @carlosandleon
      @carlosandleon 5 років тому

      @@Miquelalalaa I don't think Immigration is purely positive, that's why I myself am critical about the overly open immigration policies in place here in Europe but it js getting stricter by the day. But there are millions of displaced people in Africa alone. And most of them are on their way to Europe in the next 30 years. And we cannot outright refuse them, so it's more like a dilemma situation. We have no choice but to take them in so we have to prepare for that outcome. The choice of shutting our border is not an option. Distribution is the way to go but countries are not yet coordinated enough leading to asymmetric immigration load. And in this case we should prepare for the worst case scenario

    Most will be bought by investors speculating on rise of the profit of a home.
    These people tend to only live in the home 35% of the time,..to sell it within 4 years at a profit pricing everybody out and leaving the vast majority mostly uninhabited.
    First airtight laws to keep these people out, than build the homes.

      In Amsterdam a neighbour sold his house boat 300m square meter for €1.2 million to a South-American couple that visit Amsterdam twice a year for a long weekend.
      It's that crazy.
      He build it in 1975 for the equivalent of €20.000,- today all in and it's been upgraded somewhat at the end of the 90s for the equivalent of around €5000,- ,....it's absolutely bonkers.
