Caterham 620R & Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 (997.2): the best track car of the last 25 years
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 лип 2024
- The Caterham Seven 620R has been voted the best track car of the past 25 years by PHers. But there’s a little more to it than that…
See, following very close behind in the voting was the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0. And if you could take both cars to Snowdonia for a couple of days - a place that seems custom-made to play host to them - then, of course, you're going to. So that’s exactly what we did. And while they arguably exist at different ends of the road-legal track car spectrum, it is the laser focus on driver reward that separates them from the chasing pack - a pack that included Lamborghini, Ferrari and McLaren. Primarily, both are light, fast, and huge fun. And about as memorable to drive as any motor car gets. Join Matt Bird as all his Christmases come at once.

From experience the best track car is the car you can throw in to a corner as fast as you can without worrying about the costs if you were hit a wall.
Yeah, this.
My Yaris GR 👌🏻
MR2 all day long.
Clio rs 182 fwd, Mx5 nb rwd
Very true. Thats why I like race cars.
His pure joy driving that 620R makes me giggle
Love my 9974S. Its a beast and lovely balance in turns. Strangely less manic than M3.
Great vid PH, nie work Matt, keep it all up!
The Caterham 7 is forever young.
620r driven properly gives any road going Porsche a clean set of heals and you can see this on my channel!
Not a Porsche hater, I own a 992 Turbo S so love the Porsche range.
Great video PH 🤙🏻🏎🚀
i would say, yes u r right!
Both absolutely stunning👌
There is no doubt the caterham is the ultimate in driving experience for any one that has driven one you will know
can confirm.
Great review, next make the ultimate holy grail one, this 4.0 vs 911R
Two of my dream cars - I have one (a non-supercharged 7 CSR with 255hp) but no way I could afford that Porsche without a divorce lol
my csr260 has a previous owner who bought a 997 GT3 after i picked up the car. I, however, would never give the CSR away again! It is much more raw and exclusive than a Porsche. This feeling on the road is indescribable and no Porsche can ever deliver. And as a naturally aspirated car, it is even more beguiling than the 50hp stronger supercharged 620 without independent suspension. I realy love the induction noise of the high compression and cam tunig.
What a dream car !!!
Great content!
Good film.
I’d take the Caterham hands down, every time. No car I’ve ever driven comes even close the the visceral buzz, purity, joy and fun than a quick 7. The 911 is lardy & insulated from the elements. Sadly, people’s obsession with the brand image compels people through fragile ego to choose the porky Porker. If you don’t believe me about just what a natural high a quick 7 conveys, then drive one. Leave your prejudices & ego behind. Dare you. Caterham; there is NO substitute.
Preach!
you nailed it!
great video. no clue how you mic'd him up so we could hear him :D also without half doors!
For future reference: don't upload in 16:9 with bars. Instead just use 21:9 aspect ratio. I'm watching on ultrawide and yeah, I don't have the intended effect :)
So glad the 7 took it.
Love the 997. The new 911 ST will bring back a manual RS motor, June 8th 😊
Its basically new 911R right?
Yes it is!
Sounds more like a fiesta st to me
@@LawrenceTimme porsche stole it!
Caterham,Donkenvoort,Lotus Élise,Ariel Atom,Bac Mono R,Dallara barchetta,Radical RXC…..Light is right!😘👍
Half the weight double the fun,911 is a truck by comparison😂
even in this nice list, a Caterham is a Caterham...
Give me the 4.0 GT3 for the street and the go kart for the track and we're good!
Only thing missing is the convertable top that IS in place in my 02 986 S 3.2 liter. Midnight Metallic blue, IPD Plenum, throttle body upgraded, Fabspeed exhaust, Numeric 6 speed shifter dream machaine ! 😄
bac mono
All Porches are good but only 2 of the Caterham 7's are... the lower powered ones are woefully under powered and will get left behind on track by most things. 620R is a savage beast though and makes up for the lack of aero with power 😂😂🤷♂🤷♂
Why is half the screen cut out. I feel like im watching through a letter box
😍
And the point of the show 🤔...
Have a blast driving fast😎
Where did the BAC Mono finish on this list?
My mate has a 23 plate 620R....it has had two gearbox rebuilds....not sure that box can cope with the torque from the supercharged engine
Might be wrong but is that a large chassis optioned 620R...? Wonder how much of, if any, the impact the large chassis has on performance compared to the regular...
SV does blunt it
Regardless of the Caterham chassis, you should never have a crash in one! Where there is no crumple zone, no forces are dissipated. You have to drive with a clear head if you want to drive fast. Many reviewers have no idea and don't even know whether they are moving an SV or not, which is why hardly any channel gives this additional information. For me, the SV is always worthwhile. Rough enough, but with the extra space.
I’m buying Porsche!!!
No mention of the atom surprises me
So whereis the track time comparison?
Dallara Stradale..Where is?
Owner of a fleet of drivers car here. I own a 3.8RS and I do have to agree, it is one of the most tactile and amazing driving experience with my NSX-R. No need to get a 4.0, they are much more fragile, engine issues, gearbox issues, and the difference is only carbon front fender and rose jointed rear arms. Fitted both to my 3.8RS and there is virtually no differences. Those cars are fragile ( cambolt issues, clutch plates failures, pulley damper failure, clutch starter and starters issues, glued coolant lines and plastic shifter cables ), i had them all and probably it is one of the least reliable car i have ever own but once you are on it they are amazing. ( except the gearbox which is shit, only upgrade is 996cup cables and 996 cup shifter to improve things ).
sounds like you should try a Caterham
How would you compare the GT3 with the NSX?
@@verdict1163 On a track, with both trying to keep up with a Caterham...
@@verdict1163 Looks like the NXS-R got basically the same lap time on the TG track as an R500 Caterham. Pretty much guaranteed the Caterham would be more fun on the track though - even a less powerful one. The lack of weight is the key.
@@SuperMiloBass I owned a few cater hams, love them but they are toys, not cars. Driving experience was amazing nonetheless, need the 2.0 durance and 13inch.
🤔..... "I like it!"
Robocop Cop style
The best track car is the car you can afford to bend
I’ve got a 997.1 GT3 3.6 and am confident the 4.0 RS is the best ever. The best place to compare? Two mates enjoying the circuit together on the Nordschleife: ua-cam.com/video/K87S8cdtVJY/v-deo.html
What makes this “official”? Why not GT2? Both are great cars but if money’s no option there are better, faster, track cars…. I’ll take the Caterham
FiRsT¡
Best 911 ever made?
2.7 RS
964 RSR
993 GT2
All disagree with you. 😅
Dodge Viper ACR..... Nothing more to say .
FFS now we will have a load more idiots buying Caterham's. Which means more red flags, more fools not getting out of the way because they suddenly forget that cars without roofs have mirrors and more utterly inept attempts at loading and unloading trailers.
But yeah Caterham's are great.
BAC Mono all day long.
