Great review! I played it for the first time a few months ago, so I don't have nostalgia for it. I actually felt very similar to you playing through it. The controls and the camera were extremely frustrating. However, when I was going for the 100 coin stars at the end, the movement controls just clicked. It was weird, and in Rainbow Ride of all places. But this doesn't really redeem them. If it takes 90% of the game to get used to the controls, there's something wrong there. I think those who are really used to them love them because of the amount of tricks and exploits you can do, but this doesn't really translate for regular players. Some of its new moves are from older games. The side jump and double and triple jumps first appeared in Donkey Kong 94. The ground pound first appeared in Yoshi's Island. Good movement controls after a lot of getting used to them? Yes. The best controls of all time and the gold standard for all games? Absolutely not and not even close. As you said, the camera controls are awful. I did find that Mario cam (zoom in) helped in the bridge you mentioned, though that's no excuse for the awful regular camera angles. This is one of the biggest upgrades of Super Mario 64 DS. The camera controls as you would expect, in most levels at least, and in the others it doesn't get stuck nearly as often. However, using the dpad in that version is terrible. There is the option to use the touch screen as an analog stick, but even with the tumb stylus that came with the original DS this is a poor replacement for a real analog stick. However, someone made an analog patch for it so it can work with the 3DS analog stick. The camera is controlled with ZL/ZR or the C stick on a New 3DS, or X and Y on an original 3DS. This completely solves its control issues (relative to the N64 version anyway) and with the far better camera, the better wall jump from Sunshine and the ability to use other characters with abilities that make the game easier, this is the only version I would consider recommending to new players. It's not perfect though, the side jump is borderline useless as you have to run too far before you can use it. I think the fact that it kicks you out after every star is likely to artificially lengthen the game's playtime. After all, you have to climb Tall Tall Mountain three times (four if you don't use exploits), and this takes a while. Not good game design though. You're also right that inverted controls were basically standard then. I have no idea why either, it's strange. At least in the early 00s this finally started to go away, though it is still a thing in Sunshine. You also have a point on the game overs. I think at this point they were just there as a legacy of the series. The last game they had any purpose in was Super Mario Land 2, and I don't think they would make a difference again until New Super Mario Bros. That said, I'm not too disappointed here. With the amount of times you die from the camera, being sent back a few stars would be awful. Then there's Wing Cap Over The Rainbow, which drops you outside if you lose. That's just annoying, why did they do that? So at this point I consider it to be quite a good game personally, but it takes a significant amount of getting used to for it to get there and aside from the DS version with the analog patch there's no way I would recommend it to newer players. What I can't understand is how so many can't see past their nostalgia for not just this game but any game really, and attack those holding a different opinion just because they have fond memories growing up with it. There are certainly games that I grew up with where I can see their flaws. Even worse, those like this are often in their thirties or forties. You'd think they would have gotten a bit of perspective at that stage. That's not to say that it's wrong to point out invalid criticism or to disagree, just that it's important to do so respectfully and to respect different opinions. Looking forward to the Sunshine review!
@@WarioEnthusiast That's right actually, there have been a number of great ports like that in the last few years since the source code was leaked. I'll definitely have to try them, and by all accounts they're very good and would also be great versions for new players.
Just because you were too incompetent to grasp the controls for 90% of the time playing the game doesn't mean others were unable to enjoy the game properly.
I think the game sucks the first time you play it but once you learn the controls it feels good. But that takes a long time to get down well. It was the first of its kind but with a modern perspective I agree that it kinda sucks.
I think one thing to consider about mario 64s controls is that compared to most other n64 titles it does it a lot better, I will admit its one of those games where the controls feel pretty wack as an average gamer or its your first time playing, I remember being confused how people play the game as well as they do when I revisited it a few years back. Most of it usually comes from the fact that the skill ceiling is so high, Something that I likely won't and don't really want to achieve by playing myself because I don't care about it enough to get better at the game, It's much more enjoyable to watch than it is to play personally, I do respect the game for what it is though. Anyways I like DK64 more even though that game is flawed as hell lol
I've played the DS version of this game more, and even I'll admit the original has aged like cheese. Not milk, cheese. The real reason this game has nostalgia bias, is because it was the first to get a lot of things right. Nobody likes controlling their character like a tank, so 360 degree analogue movement was the only way to stand out at the time. But hey, neither of our opinions have mattered once.
I dont agree in the slightest. There's a difference between controls that are unintuitive and controls that are bad. Mario 64 has a learning curve and you will have to put in time but once they click the controls feel amazing. It's similar to how I feel about the old sonic games, a lot of people dislike them because the controls are unintuitive. If you don't understand how they work you'll just run into obstacles constantly and have a bad time but once you get a grip on them they have a really cool skill ceiling that really lets you break the level design in fun and cool ways. Watch any speedrun of this game, the controls have a crazy amount of depth and are way more precise than people give it credit for. I also don't understand your complaints about the structure of the game, I have never felt like the star requirement was too strict or I had to backtrack to get stars. I actually think that's one of the best aspects of the game because it gives you a lot of freedom as to how you want to progress and which stars and levels you actually want to play. It's what makes the game a lot of fun to revisit, I don't like a lot of the stars but you can skip most of the annoying ones and still beat the game.
Even after playing the game twice, the controls didn't "click" for me. Even if they did, you shouldn't have to get used to them in the first place. The difficulty of the game should never come from the controls and instead come from obstacles, levels, etc. And speedruns showing off how "good" the controls are probably comes from the fact that the speedrunner themselves plays the game hundreds of times to master it. It's fine for you to like the controls but to me they were just straight up bad.
@@WarioEnthusiast I don't really think it's a fair argument to the game especially since it was their first 3D game and we have 30 years of hindsight and design innovation that we've all collectively gotten used to. I don't think the game having a learning curve is that bad especially given that context and the fact that once you actually master it, it's fun. Chaining together moves and trying to be efficient with your movement makes the game a lot more fun. I bring up speedrunning because there's a reason why people like it enough to invest that much time. There's a reason why it's one of the most popular games in terms of speedrunning and it's because the ceiling is very high. I don't think it's for everyone but I don't think people give it enough credit, the fact that it holds up at all is insane for how old it is.
Don't take this as me hating or anything, I'm not, I appreciate the time you took out of your day to comment this. Thanks! But I really hate the mindset of things outside of the game itself like the time it came out, if it revolutionized the industry, etc impacting criticism in some way. Sure, video games are art but art won't be made anymore if no one goes to the art museum. I take no issue with critics judging games like art but it needs that balance of judging games like art and judging games based on how good it is on its own, because realistically the average consumer won't care too much about Bubsy 3D coming out in 1996 if the game is dogshit. Once again, judging games by that mindset is totally fine but it's not the objective way to view things. Thanks for the comment!
@@WarioEnthusiast Nah man you're good. I understand why you feel that way, I just don't agree. I think the extra context helps me appreciate a lot of the decisions and design choices they made. You cant say the same thing about Bubsy 3D, the developers had no idea how to translate a 2D platformer into 3D and it shows in nearly every single design choice they made. Even outside of the context, I still think the game holds up, however I will admit it does appeal to what I like about games. It could just be that I've always been more of a Sonic guy than a Mario guy but I don't mind the game having a learning curve, it's fun to learn the intricacies and nuances of how Mario controls, and I like the sandbox level design. While a lot of design holds up for me, a lot of it doesn't. It feels like they were throwing ideas at the wall to try and see what stuck. The developers probably realized this and the more open ended progression they went with helps the game a lot. I like this game but going for 100% is a lot less fun than going for 70 stars, there are some stars I'd rather not play again. I feel a similar way about playing Odyssey, I like the freedom to tackle the main objective in whatever way I want to.
Honestly I both agree and disagree, I never was a big fan of this game, I definitely enjoy the DS version more, and I absolutely will call it extremely overrated, I don’t think it’s like terrible or better than most of the 2D games, because I’m not a fan of 2D Mario in general compared to 3D and that’s just true. Also these reviews are seriously starting to feel scatterbrain with barely any cohesion
@WarioEnthusiast I did actually and while my comment referred mainly to the hot takes at the beginning I generally just don't agree with your criticisms, for example the controls gripe feels a bit removed from context of the time but I get it's in response to the culture of glazing. Your complaint about air control is also not really agreeable to me, but I'm also not a mario fan, so it is just me dismissing it out of hand because I was never as invested.

This game sucks so much. How can anyone say this is good? You've pretty much taken the words right out of my mouth, so I'm going to focus on the only good part of the game that being bowser in the Fire Sea. Bowser in the Fire Sea is the best level in the game, yet is the most underrated level in the game (Seriously, 64 fans need better opinions) the reason why BitFS is the best level is because it's linear. When going in a straight line, you don't have to worry about the terrible turning or air control. It allows you to keep moving. And the platforms actually make sense... and that level is instantly ruined by Bowser. This game is not one of the best 3D platformers, I'd argue games like Sonic 06 and Mega Man X7 are better games. I wanted a fun time. I wasn't expecting the second coming of christ (even though that's how 64 fans treat it), and 64 just didn't do that. So anyways, I bet that there are going to be: 5 Skill issue comments that don't explain anything 3 comments calling you a bad person 10 comments saying "Oh, but revolutionary" And 1 comment doxxing you
Personally, I don't hate this game but also wouldn't call it amazing or one of the best games of all time. Just... average. As you said, the controls are super clunky. Turning around, air control and even sliding which is hard to recover from can lead to surely death. Even towards the end of the game, I NEVER felt comfortable enough with controlling Mario, which is not a good feeling. And i couldn't get used to the winged cap controls, I think it's supposed to simulate Super Mario World cape controls, but in practice it doesn't feel very good. The camera is also janky as all hell, sometimes it's capped for how far you can rotate for no discernable reason. However, when the controls work, the game can be enjoyable. When the level design is mindful of the limitations, it can be fun to platform through, which, unfortunately, isn't always the case. Tick Tock Clock is super frustrating because of precise platforming and one big bottomless pit that is easy to fall into. The DS version actually adds some platforms below for safety, which is appreciated. I didn't hate Rainbow Ride, I actually found it to be better than most other levels. Pro tip: at the start of the level, you can long jump towards the pole on the left. You'll take a little bit of damage but you'll skip the initial autoscroller section. Bowser boss le bad, because the camera doesn't show the full view of the area to know where tf you're supposed to throw bowser. I also appreciate the open nature of the game. I remember playing the game and encountering a road block early on - the race against the penguin in Cool Cool Mountain. The sliding is tedious, because turning is hard, and you have to be moving fast or the penguin will get the first place. Then I decided to switch gears and play Dire Dire Docks, and I found myself enjoying the game more. I like how you can skip the undesirable stars if you so choose, and there are usually multiple stars you can find even if you targeted a specific one when starting a level. Of course, if you're going for 100%, you'll have to swallow them and then some, which I can't imagine being fun. Super Mario 64 certainly shows its age, as it's not as good to play in present day. It's legendary in a way, as one of the first 3D platformers to popularize the genre. But, at the end of the day, it's a classic I don't vibe with. -Super Mario 64 DS is a better version anyway.-
All your complaints about the controls just come down to you sucking at them. The controls are only as bad as the player is at them, DSP. And of course you think DS is better, because it's easier and has a lower skill ceiling.
i dead ass thought i was just restarted for not liking this game but yeah basically i've never had alot of interest in playing this game past the first few levels, ive tried hard to get into it but i just think of all the other 3d platformers i can play that do the genre so much better and just end up turning it off lol, it's just not as fun as all the nostalgic millennials say it is
I thinl this game is really good but I have to admit, If I was playing on console only I would say it is a bit overrated. N64 fans always praise the console a ton but it just looks kinda whatever to me
The tone of this video makes this come off like you are saying this for views. Heck 64 is my 2nd least favorite 3D mario game with only 3D land being worse yet I still like the game. If we’re taking base game than I still like the game so I don’t agree with the conclusion but I will agree this game is overrated. Now if we’re taking about super Mario 64 plus mod than this game goes from good to great in my opinion.

People when a reviewer has his own opinion: 🤬
@@SuperJM9 my first time playing this was on sm64 plus and I wish I kept it that way. I like that version a lot
Bro wrote an essay for a ragebait video lmfao
@@Ohrami never said that no one else could enjoy it. legit just my opinion it's not that serious
I think the game sucks the first time you play it but once you learn the controls it feels good. But that takes a long time to get down well. It was the first of its kind but with a modern perspective I agree that it kinda sucks.
Why is everyone so mad let a guy have opinions
But hey, neither of our opinions have mattered once.
people will continue to love this game no matter what while i get singled out of the enjoyment 👍👍👍

@WarioEnthusiast you actually had to do the pin of shame, LMFAO
