    Fun fact: Regarding that "rabbit symbol" in Dedede's final smash, it is not a peace sign. In Japan, that hand gesture means "V for victory!" It is almost never used as a peace sign. In fact, I am not entirely sure they even realize it is considered a peace sign in western countries. Just about any time you ever see that "V" gesture from a Japanese source, it is meant to signify confidence and good cheer.

      Sorry, I don't mean to seem rude but... Why would Japanese people use that? They don't use an Arabic script, they don't have the letter v. I'm sure they have their own equivalent for the word "Victory", but I assume it isn't shaped like a V

    I confirm that "Marie" is very close to "mairie" ( meaning "townhall" )
    And it also is to "maire", which is indeed the masculine word for "mayor". And also the feminine form. It's a gender invariant noun.

    • @erickaguirre4888
      @erickaguirre4888 4 місяці тому +14

      @@JadeJunoIt is explained in the game (As part of Palutena's guidance) that her name Canela comes from the word "can" as in "canino" which means dog.
      Granted, it's not an easy pun, but it's still there.
      I wonder if the German Melinda or the Italian Fuffi also have some hidden pun to them.

  • @davidsalamanca8123
    @davidsalamanca8123 4 місяці тому +69

    Isabelle has bells in her hair too, that was the explaination i always hear... in Spanish she is called canela, the Pun here is for Can (canine), canela means cinnamon in Spanish, her brother (Digbi) also changes his name for ''Candres''.

    • @Franzeco333
      @Franzeco333 4 місяці тому +5

      Also Canela, just as Cinnamon, is a common name for a pet dog.
      Candrés is just a mix between Can (family of dogs, foxes and wolves) and Andrés, a common male name. It's not even a pun at this point, but they had to come up with something that matches Canela, since they're twins.

    Something else kinda weird that I noticed: when stacking the two size increases from the mushroom and lightning, sometimes R.O.B. takes _no_ damage at all. In every other test, the initial grab of the move would always deal around 5%. But when the Mii was double-size-boosted, the grab doesn’t do any damage.

    13:05 If I remember correctly from last time I played Smash in french, or from last time I played Smash at all (lol), this panel is Quebec's french language, and not regular France's french. There are some minor differences, for example, some names are kept as is from English in France's french version, as in Quebec's french, the names are "Frenchified". For example, Captain Falcon's "Capitaine Falcon" (obviously "capitaine" is a direct translation of Captain) ; King K. Rool's "Roi K. Rool" ("roi" meaning king) ; and also other differences that I don't seem to find an explanation for like ZSS being "Samus sans Armure (Samus without Armor)" in France's french, and "Samus sans combinaison (Samus without suit)" in Quebec's french. If if remember correctly, in France's french, there's also Rosaluma which is "Harmonie & Luma", Duck Hunt which is "Duo Duck Hunt", Plant which is litterally "Plante Piranha" instead of Quebec's "Fleur" (Flower), and Mii Brawler which is "Boxeur Mii (meaning obviously Mii Boxer)" instead. I'm pretty sure you get Quebec's French on your game because you have an American game, and not a European one. I don't remember if you've talked about these details already or not but in case you didn't... Also, as a native french speaker, no mockery involved of course but your way of pronouncing "Maire" just made me laugh. You did great considering our "r" sound is not easy to get, but still... I don't comment a lot but I'm here since a long time ago and I just wanted you to know I love your videos! Keep up the good work

    The fact about Isabelle's name changes and the process of localization got me thinking about how different the Palutena's Guidance would be between languages. Palutena saying "That's why she Isabelle!" wouldn't make sense if that was not her name. I would assume that they have the same basic script between languages, like making sure that they say, "This is Mario from Super Mario", but I wonder what dialogue is changed/added/left out during translation.

      Also, all the pokemon names are pretty good in other languages. Especially gen 1 stuff. They use to just be like portmanteaus (combinations of two words) and they'd slap it onto the pokemon and be like "yup that's good!" Like Charmander char + salamander, but it's the same in Spanish, Quemandra (quedar - to burn + salamandra - salamander)

    • @gaslit7442
      @gaslit7442 4 місяці тому

      @@SylasTheShadow...except, it's not like that in Spanish. Spanish and Italian do not have localized Pokémon names, and instead reuse the English names. The only exceptions are Type: Null from Gen 7 and the Gen 9 Paradox mons (guess those aren't really "names" and are more so descriptions). This is unique amongst the regions that have had official main series localizations since Gen 1.

    Idk the true origin of their names, but I can tell you that Isabelle and her brother Digby are called "Canela" and "Candrés" in Spanish.
    This seems to be a pun on the common Spanish names "Candela" and "Andrés", but adding "can" into the mix, which is a fancy word for dog.
    Additionally, "canela" also directly translates to cinnamon, which could relate to her color and sweetness.
    These puns aren't particularly interesting in Spanish but idk I like them, they sound cute.

    I'm very fond of language, etymology translation and all that's stuff so I was quite stoked that you had a series going on about it and sad when you said you wouldn't continue. So I was happy to see you still slipped an extra segment about it in this video and looking forward to more TidBitsBits in future videos.
    As a french speaker I can give some quick facts about the character names I guess.
    A lot of names are not translated and come directly from the english version but it depends on the base material, english sounds good to french people for marketing reasons, for example Captain Falcon, King K. Rool and Bowser Jr. are kept as is, Mr. Game & Watch is well branded as mister and not monsieur with M. , when the names are transated in the original material it's used like Daraen for Robin, Harmonie for Rosalina
    and Marie for Isabelle as you mentioned, as well as the pokemons.
    Fun fact dark samus and dark pit aren't translated the same, "samus sombre" means literally dark as in a dark room, whereas "pit maléfique" translates to evil pit. I guess it's to match the orginal games, I don't know enough about them to know.
    Toon links becomes link cartoon as "toon" isn't too much used as it's own compared to cartoon that is understood, and young link to kid or child link.

    PKBeats becoming self aware, haha.
    In the end, as always, there is a finite amount of things to discuss about smash ultimate, even if it may seem like white noise at times as you were saying.
    Although, I in particular like this type of content too, where you're free to speak of whatever you like.
    Maybe someday there'll be a new smash game, or maybe your content creation may be focused on different titles.
    The world is your oyster, free for however which way you like. Keep it up and be yourself, you'll always have this one guy here at the very least who finds himself watching your videos, haha.
    p.s. I used to play Melee with spiderjew back in 2020 and before, totally hated his peach as a samus main, haha.
    Nice to hear he really likes your content.

    I like your localisation trivia and am fine with it getting added to these videos if they don'tdo well in their own. If you ever like make a new channel for it or something, mention it in a video on this one (I don't get shown most community posts in my subscription feed).

    Odin's sword slash on the midgar stage deals 100% but doesn't kill at 0%, making it the highest damaging stage hazard that doesn't instakill. I actually got this to happen online once, also.

    So about the French word "maire".
    It's a masculine noun used for both genders ("Monsieur le maire", "Madame le maire"). However, in some countries, you can use a feminine version of this noun, being "mairesse", or use a feminine pronoun with the masculine noun: "la maire" (although it sounds wrong using it because "maire" is a homophonoun to "mère", a feminine noun that means "mother").
    Bisous !

    When there was a fact about the adaptation of the name “Isabelle” into other languages, I wondered how it works in my native language. While I was thinking, the video went on. As soon as I finished thinking, I didn’t understand what I was watching now, because at that moment PKBeats was already talking about something about fish. Adding to this the fact that I don't speak English very well, which meant that I sometimes couldn't translate some of what PKBeats was saying (so I didn't notice that he had moved on to another topic), I was at a loss for a while.

    something that is funnier about Isabelle is that her spanish name is “Canela” which translates to cinnamon; Rajesh’s dog from the big bang theory, who also happens to be that dog race

    In Spanish Rosalina is called Estela and in Princess Peach Showtime, Peach´s companion is called Stella which was changed in Spanish to Lucy, to avoid similarities (even though her dress is identical).

    Isabelle also has a different name in Spanish. Her name was localized as "Canela", which I think is a REALLY cute name. It literally means "Cinammon", and it is a relatively common name over here, it also has the word "Can", which is another way to say Dog in spanish (coming from the latin Canis, meaning Canine).

    4:55 So, in pokemon, you have two attack types: physical and special and the damage calcs are correspond to the different stats like attack vs special attack and defense vs special defense. To represent that a move is special or physical, Pokemon uses two symbols to represent the two types of attacks. The symbol on the ring mat MIGHT be the symbol for physical attacks in Pokemon, which makes sense since there's a bunch of physical moves at play for the final smash. I could be wrong here, however.

    The Dutch version of Smash has mostly the same names, the one thing they did decide to translate is "Villager", which turns into the humongous "Dorpsbewoner", literally Village Inhabitant.

    I really enjoyed the Isabelle translation segment. I do really enjoy looking at the pokemon translations too.
    Side note, Potato in french can be translated as "Apple of the earth" like sure I guess.
    (Edit, check the replies for better info)
    Also shoutout to Platypus in french making agent P's theme very funny.

      It's "pomme de terre", so more like "earth apple"/"ground apple". But you can also use "patate"

    • @draghettis6524
      @draghettis6524 4 місяці тому +2

      It's only one of the two ways to call potatos, and even if nowadays "pomme" means "apple", it originally meant "fruit", so "pomme de terre" means more "fruit of the earth"
      As for platypus, we call the species "ornithorynque". From the greek words for bird and beak.

      Ahh, thanks for more information, I had a feeling there would be more than one way to say potato.
      Honestly, it can be interesting to take a word (for me Platypus) and see how it is different in other languages, usually drawing from whatever language they are based on.

    Nah nah I vividly remember the dedicated Japanese to English smash video
    And I still want more
    You definitely still have the dedicated audience.
    It'd be dope to learn more Japanese with a game I like and a guy who knows English and is learning japanese himself
    It's like a learning experience for everyone
    Could be fun!

    I live in Mexico and I always call Isabelle "Isabela" because I play games on English, and I always confuse people a little bit on tourneys because Isabelle is actually called "Canela" in the Spanish localization, so there's this little bit of "Huh?" before we both realize what we're talking about.
