A tip that I’ve learned after doing resin for a while, is that you should always have a mold for leftover resin. Make something pretty with all your leftover resin so you don’t waste it. I have little crystal molds and when I do an Etsy order and have leftover, I make a crystal and put it in as a free gift with their order

Here are the lessons in order!
    1. Measure your molds (don’t overestimate the amount of resin)
    2. Less is more (glitters, colors, etc.)
    3. Stir slowly (stirring fast makes too many bubbles and the resin won’t look clear)
    4. Flowers float (sometimes it’s best to do two coats of resin)
    5. Use a level surface (you don’t want resin to leak out of the molds)
    6. Know when to stop
    7. Use protective gear such as gloves, mask, respirator, etc.
    8. Don’t be afraid to slightly overfill your mold
    9. Pay attention to temperature (not temp of the resin....pay attention to the temp of the room you’re working in. Resin takes longer to cure in colder temps)
    10. Leave time in between layers of colors (to be able to distinguish the different colors)
    Hope this helps :)

Hint: drop the dried flowers in a small cup of resin and stir to coat them, then add them to the project and this helps keep them stationary. This works on larger petals, buds, seeds, anything that can stand the light movement of coating them. Tiny flat flowers are too delicate, add them before the layer under them is cured, that will hold them in place for the second or top coat. 😉

Also do not use wood sticks to stir your resin when it is in the mold bc it will scratch it. Those scratches will show in the piece. Always use silicone sticks to stir or move the resin inside the mold. Also when using light things like flowers you do a thin layer of resin, put the flowers in and let it cure for about an hour, then go back and fill up the rest of the mold. This way you don't get lines in your layers and your flowers will not float to the top, you can place them in the middle.

    • @rachelalvey7679
      @rachelalvey7679 3 роки тому +6

Also if you want a pattern in your resin like swirls you need to let it set for about 30 min or so until its a peanut butter consistency then make your pattern it will stay that way and not mesh like it does when it's thin

I have two tips for beginners: first is that you run a lighter across the top of the resin before it drys to pop all of the air bubbles; two, you can file the edges of the solid resin to get rid of the sharpness ( using a nail file or sand paper ) . Great video!

I use a deburring tool instead now, make sure you use a wet towel and wipe up resin dust or curlies from using a deburring tool. These will get everywhere and get in your new projects. Even possible that it looks like dust but it's not it's resin and you do not want to inhale it. Always wear gloves when working with dry resin or wet resin

Here is a little Tipp, fill your mold with rice and weigh it, then you know exactly how much resin you‘ll need. Also prepare everything you want to use for your molds first hand, so you don’t have to get stressed out if your resin starts to get sticky faster then you thought it will. Sometimes even the temperature of your room will make your job and your resin harder then you think.

I hope i explained that understandably. Lol

Also, the craft resin can cure in less than 24 hours if mixed properly. You shouldn't mix by weight, and you shouldn't see any streaks when you're finished mixing. Approximately 3 1/2 minutes of mixing slowly should be about right, and scrape the sides and bottom of the cup as you stir to get it mixed properly.

I've watched a lot of resin videos and I got my first batch today needless to say I made a lot of these mistakes but I do appreciate the format of this video most people can just talk about the mistakes and it kind of goes in one ear and out the other this was a great visual on what could happen specifically if you do it a certain way great job I learned a lot I'm more of a visual learner and I'm sure this one will stick LOL just like my hands did because I did not wear gloves the whole time😅

I really appreciated your approach to this. I’m mostly to ‘wing it’ like you did. I like that you turned them into “lessons” especially because you owned it!

I love that you used your first run for the demonstration. Most videos tell you what to do, but don't explain exactly why. Your method makes it easier to remember the tips. Thanks for the video.

Well done. In all aspects of life I've learned more from the projects that have gone wrong than those that sailed through uneventfully. It's great to have a trouble free project but without the learning experience you can get over cocky and screw up the next bigger and more expensive project. Thanks for sharing this and letting us learn from your own mistakes.
    Kind regards . . . Andy

I LOVE it! I just ordered bookmarks and I am drying some rose petals! I’ve got gold flakes already. Thank you for posting this and I love the eyelash idea. I don’t wear eyelashes but I know a lot of girls who do and they would probably really like a thing like that.

A tip I like is after pouring your resin and hardener into separate measuring cups, let them sit in a warm area for a while. It'll get bubbles our prior to stirring.
Also stir in one direction slowly. I really reduced bubbles when i started stirring in one direction.

This is incredible!! I made every single mistake when I was first starting off too! They turned out pretty well too. The lashes plate is literally my fave idea ever!!! I wear lashes (the same size as those) every day and if I’m in a rush at night I always throw them by my sink, they always get lost or wet and it’s soooo annoying. I’m absolutely gonna make one of those plates. Thanks for your vid x

Stumbled upon this video about your rookie mistakes. Have to say that you made me laugh out loud about your "made in a jacuzzi" comment. I loved that you are showing us things we really might not have even thought through. I've subscribed to your channel now so I'll have a look at your other stuff. Thanks for making me laugh - it's been a challenging start to the day today, so your light-hearted video was very welcome! 😊

I measured my resin separately I started from point A to point B, because I had to used those cups where you put snacks in and I had to borrow my mom's food scale to measure the resin without making a mess. Plus I used gemstone silicone molds from Michael's and they were on sale, because it was perfect for beginners.

Thank you so much for this video, I just bought my first silicone molds a few days ago, waiting for them to come in the mail. I hadn't ordered my resin yet because I wanted to make sure I was using it safely and correctly. Definitely make sure you are in a well-ventilated room, I've heard of people having trouble breathing because of resin fume exposure.
