The Dark Side of the Moon is one of the best albums ever produced! The songs blend from one to another telling a beautiful story of the human experience. It's best to listen all the way through.
Also, the thing about Pink Floyd is when you hear this song for the 155th time, you'll get that same feeling and personally, listening to Pink Floyd always leaves me in a better place.
This is a case, where it’s best to listen to the Dark Side of the Moon in it’a entirety. Great album.

@Perry Barrett that was a transition period, they honestly didn’t know what they were doing. And it was from a soundtrack to an extremely obscure movie. So while you’re not exactly wrong, it still seems a bit off. Every band went through a period of trying to “sound” like someone else before getting their feet underneath them.

Fun fact: Back in 1985, Junior year in High School, our chorus teacher was SO cool, he allowed us to choose one song (any genre we wanted) to rehearse and sing. We overwhelmingly chose this song. It was for our "Final Concert of the school year", and we nailed it. Granted, the only instrument we had playing it was piano. Someone (a Senior that year) had money, and owned a camcorder. The tape is packed away, but I offered to digitize it if he ever finds it. But this song is very special to me because of that performance.
Edit: The very last part was about a homeless person being brushed off by someone walking by. The reply to asking for a handout was "Out of the way, it's a busy day. I've got things on my mind." The last line.... "For want of the price of tea and a slice" (something to eat and drink) "The old man died." (because someone wouldn't give them just enough change to buy tea and a slice (of bread, presumably)). Which infers that he starved to death.
That story deserves a thumbs up. Not as cool as yours but we played Another Brick in the Wall in marching band. lol. ✌
yes it’s about the futility of war and how young men and women get sucked into jingoism, finally ending up as traumatized veterans (the old man) the rest of his country blithely ignore.
"tea and a slice" tea and toast is so British. I really never understood how a whole nation can be so in love with what is basically deluxe bread & water. Great story, and breakdown.

This album is such a masterpiece. I'm a total thrash metal head but have always enjoyed Pink Floyd.
There are universal themes of pink Floyd like Metallica that transcend genre.
This album was on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart for over 17 YEARS straight! Far longer than any other album was on the chart without a break. That is because of how many people recognized the genius of the album and the feelings it inspired.
When you look at that list of top ten-30 it’s astounding!! The difference between this lp and the rest..

I am an old man who was steeped in this music in the 1970's. I'm in the middle of your reaction and find myself crying like a baby at the shocking notion that young people are hearing music such as this for the first time.

This is one of those albums that you can simply enjoy all of the songs. And all of them will give you a different feeling. Amazing work so many years later people are still taking this journey of a band that doesn't even exist anymore.

Nice reaction! That sax solo really hits deep. To me the end of the song could be about ex-soldiers living on the street (down and out) after struggling to re-join society because of the horrors of war they've experienced. They are invisible to the busy people going about their day, wrapped up in their own, safe lives. DSOTM is just a masterpiece.
Such a peaceful sounding song about such a horrible event. Took a few times listening to get the meanings behind the music. We didn't have lyric videos back in the 70s

I had a completely new and intense Pink Floyd experience this winter during the polar night, when I looked up at the sky and saw the Northern Lights dancing to these sounds. That was magic at its finest.

This song actually melts right into the next one, an instrumental called Any Color You Like. Just so you know, the last two songs on the album also run together and they should be listened to that way. Brain Damage and Eclipse.
Any Colour You Like: possibly my favourite piece of music ever. Not just Floyd.
It's OK to cry. The whole album brought me to tears in 1978 and changed my life. So did their next album, Wish You Were Here. Neil Young can do it, too. I suggest his song, Thrasher.
Yep it's about war but still a beautiful piece of music and my favorite from this album.

Pink Floyd is not music that you JUST listen to. You feel it and experience it. I like the way you feel Pink Floyd. It's a journey through every album. Think about 3 albums in a row. Dark side of the moon, Wish you were here and THE WALL

The mark of any great work of music is that you never tire of hearing it no matter how many times you've heard it. Dark Side of the Moon easily passes this test, and then some. What's even more impressive is that it's hardly the only Pink Floyd album of which this is true. It's their Abbey Road, which is fitting because that's where it was recorded, and engineered by Alan Parson who of course worked on that album.
When I was in college in the 80's there were two albums that I played repeatedly on my Sony Walkman (Dolby C, of course), this, and Miles Davis' Kind of Blue. Never got tired of listening to them, especially late at night on solitary walks around campus. They are perhaps the two most perfect works of art in each of their respective music genres. I wonder what Miles Davis thought of Dark Side of the Moon.
And I just found out that the keyboard part of another cut from this album, Breathe, composed by Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright, was inspired by Kind of Blue. I had no idea.
It's not always a moving guitar solo, love it when they throw in an emotional Sax solo.

I'll never forget Roosevelt stadium 1973 they did the entire Dark Side of the Moon - it was mind blowing. The album is really meant to be listened to straight through, as the songs sort of blend into each other without silence between songs. These individual tracks posted have their beginnings and endings cut and cropped, and are different than the original album.
I was about 12 or 13 when I first heard Pink Floyd. I'm 49 now. Their music never gets old. Never heard a song from them I didn't like.
It's the beauty and the complexity that helps it stay new.
You have to remember. Vietnam was ongoing, and growing up in the UK WW2 ended 25 years or so before.

Good reaction Lily Jane! You know, this song was always in the set. Whether they did the Dark Side album or not. I always enjoyed the movie on the oval screen during this one. I think it set the tone for the song beautifully. The version from Pulse is quite good. And, thx for your journey through Floyd.
I love how at 9:10 you started describing what you were thinking of and what you were picturing. Pink Floyd is the only band that can make me get extremely emotion to the point of tears without saying a single word. That’s so extremely special and it’s something that artists in our generation today lack the ability or discipline to try to achieve
It's the music *industry* that does it to artists, trying to squeeze as many albums out of them as they possibly can. Stifling creativity
First Heard this album in 1976, since then I've listened to DSOTM hundreds of times. Us and Them still makes me emotional and the way it goes back and forth between in close and intimate to Big and wide, it is a Masterpiece within a Masterpiece.
This is, strangely considering the lyrical content, one of the absolute most romantic pieces of music ever recorded....especially the organ swelling in the jnto to the lazy appregios leading to that sensual sax solo. May ne wearing my heart on my sleeve a bit but I always go to a place in my mind of me and my lady (havent found her yet) slowly dancing during the twilight of summer, cool breeze blowing. Lol, its amazing what Pink Floyd does to the mind....sober or trippin.
Have you heard "Awaken" by Yes? Or, "Close to the Edge" also by them? Same level of beauty, intensity, and lyrics. But different.

I still love Dark Side of the Moon today as much as i did when I was a teenager back in 1973 when the album first came out. What struck me about your reaction to 'Us and Them' was your insight into the after effects of war and the lasting affect it has on veterans of wars and how the horror of what they witnessed in combat never really leaves them. To have that level of insight at your young age is truly of great credit to you. I can tell that you are a very intelligent and thoughtful young lady. Believe me, it's not just today's music that all too often is mostly noise. Back in the 1970's when this music was new, it was also standing out against a background of mostly noise. It was just a different style of noise. We appreciate bands like Pink Floyd and a few others, and judge the music of the 1970's by those geniuses, because the noise is forgotten -- the sludge has sunk to the bottom, and the cream remains to be treasured forever. Some day the noise of the 2020's will fade away, and the truly great music of THIS era, which does exist, will take it's place to be listened to by a young adult in 2073, who will say "the music of that era sure was great!"

My daughters liked Wham. I discovered Pink Floyd along with the rest of my generation, early 1970's for me.
I find it fascinating how this music once again resonates with this generation. I find your generation as a whole to be greatly encouraging. You are bright, inciteful; you get what is in these songs, written at a time we were driven by the circumstance to consciously decide who we would be, and stand for.
Therefore, as art IS a reflection of the times in which it's created; you, my grandchildren's generation, are at that place now; I never saw my children's generation as making a choice, they sort of went back to the 1950's- big hair, pop music Wake Me Up Before You Go- Go (ha!) Pep rallies, etc.
I think you guys are great! As a whole aware and inciteful, very smart. I'm probably not the only Boomer who hears you that thinks this. Think outside the bubble folks- life is so much more interesting that way- I think you get that.
You mostly got all of the meaning of the song, great job and reaction! You did miss the meaning of the last couple of lines because you were focused on the war aspect. The down and out, with/without part was about poverty and homelessness. Down and out was a phrase used often in the 60s, 70s, and 80s to describe someone who had lost their job and home and as a result they were living on the streets. The last two lines sbout a busy day and things on my mind were about someone ignoring or dismissing that homeless person rather than stopping to help, resulting in the old man dying from starvation because he couldn't afford something as simple as a cup of tea and a slice of food. Brilliant writing imo.
yes the lat two lines i feel were about how modern society pushes away the warriors once the war is over.. as is still evident even today

You're right the song does lend itself to different interpretations, but I must say I like yours. Pink Floyd may not use a lot of words to get their message across but they are almost always the perfect ones. And what you might not pick up from the lyrics, the soul picks up from the amazing instrumentals. Nice job!!
Us and Them !!! Great. Love that sax. Also from that album is Brain Damage. I don't know if you have done it yet just be sure that you do it with Eclipse which is the ending.
Heads up - These have to go together. - Pink Floyd - Brain Damage / Eclipse - otherwise Brain damage just suddenly stops without the end.
Wow, that was such a good analysis! So here’s the story of the song: It was written by Roger Watters and it’s about his father dying in the Battle of Anzio in World War II. His father did not want to go to war, like any sensible person, but had to go and do his duty for his country. His father gave his life for a greater purpose, but Roger was too young to understand why of course and became really bitter about it. A lot of the songs in The Wall were inspired by this event as well. Listen closely to the lyrics of Being the Boys Back Home, Shen the Tigers Broke Free, and Another Brick in the Wall Part 1 from The Wall.
Parts of this classic, timeless song reminds me of church, must be the organ music.. I wholeheartedly agree with the person below in how good the production is on this song... I submit to everyone, that this album is one of the BEST EVER!!!! EVER..... Such a head trip! Pink's music tends to make you reflect and ponder. These men are brilliant.. So good!!!!!!!!!!!!!........................... For the record, this album, 8-track was released the same year I graduated from High School. (1973) That and the entire album is near perfect musically!!!

Very good interpretation of the song! Roger Waters ( lyricist and bass player) lost his father in WW2 who was killed in combat. Obviously, his pain and anger really shows in the lyrics and the power in the music. Enjoyed this and your other reactions to Floyd! Keep 'em coming! 😁

This song is just as relevant today as it was back in the 70s.
You're gonna be hooked on the FLOYD. Awesome band, been listening to them for nearly half a century. Just relax and listen. You need a little Cannabis to truly appreciate it. Roger Waters, a band member, he wrote many of the songs with David Glimour (that's who is singing this song) anyway, Eric Fletcher Waters his father, died in 1944 while serving as a second lieutenant with the Royal Fusiliers as they advanced through Italy.

Only the first part deals directly with war. The last part, "With/without,.... That's what the fighting's all about", and "Out of the way" is about the needy and a homeless person on the street. "Out of the price, of tea and a slice, the old man died".
If you want Pink Floyd with an incredible bell you need High Hopes.
This song is about binaries. Black and white. Us and them. It criticizes the cut and dry narrative that is given in a time of war.
This song reveals that we’re all just ordinary people, and when one takes a deeper look, war is senseless death.

You should check out the Pink Floyd live at Earls court London 1994. It's awesome. Their laser light show. Look up the songs at that concert like Run like hell, Time, Learning to fly, etc.
You nailed it. You don't just listen to Pink Floyd.....you experience them!! Highly recommend Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts I-IX in its entirety. Parts I-V start the album Wish You Were Here and parts VI-IX end the album.

Forty years of listening to this album and I still tear up and, yes, sometimes I even break down. The songs on this album were written by a group of guys in their mid to late twenties, and they have written songs with an emotional punch beyond their years that I swear hits even harder for me at 55 than as the emotional fifteen year old I was when I bought the album. And I'm supposed to be a tough unfeeling old bastard.
The end to me is very much a reflection of how we all can be. We're so wrapped up in what is going on in our immediate lives that we can forget about other people, even people right there that we see. "For the want of the price/of tea and a slice/the old man died." That hit me extra hard when I was a teen and involved working with the missions for the homeless through my church, because I knew that a couple of bucks (or one or two pop-top cans of soup, stew, and/or beans or veggies) can make it possible for somebody to be living tomorrow instead of dead tonight. And sometimes even the most caring and thoughtful of us need the reminder to take the bucket of "so much going on in my mind" off of our heads and actually see what is going on around us and how we can directly help, even in the smallest ways, to make someone's day a little better. Sometimes all it takes is a kind word to make someone choose to stay alive a little longer.
I love it when they just seem to become even greater than the sum of their parts, as in their synergy. Like birds in flight, or your favorite sports team moving like a well-lubed machine, in perfect synchrony. All One mind.

Alan Parsons ( Alan Parsons Project ) produced most of these albums. When he produced his own albums under his name, they also are story arcs. Turn of a Friendly Card is an excellent album, you'd enjoy it.

Dark Side of the moon was the first rock show that I ever saw back in 1973. I just turned 16 at the time and I got hooked on Prog Rock on the spot. 50 years later I still listen to it and still discover new things every time. Truly a masterpiece! You said that there is also great music made today, I agree, but in my mind, this is very hard to top and you have to look hard and out of the commercial mainstream to find some. Maybe I'm just too old to understand new music, but none make me feel like that and other albums of that era.
Saw them do this live on the original tour. New music that blew everyone away.
There is plenty of time to think later...Mainly let the emotion carry you through this amazing performance.
I wish I could listen to this album again for the first time and get the same feeling I got when I first heard it.

The music of Floyd has a unique ability to expose a persons heart and soul and most interpret Floyds music in their own way, it means whatever you want it to mean and is the reason why so many fall in love with it. I believe the Dark Side Of The Moon, when listened to in its entirety, is a living, breathing, work of art that etches itself to your soul and never leaves you.
I've watched all of your Pink Floyd reactions, you have a good heart and an honest soul, never change.

Black Friday at Walmart in 2011 (I was 11), I was given $70 dollars and decided to purchase the newly reissued 'Wall' album along with a t-shirt of the animated characters (Wife, Teacher, Mother, and Pink) from the Concert/Film. Immediately became obsessed with it and began my journey of seeking art in music. I know The Wall (all of Pink Floyd, really) by heart ♥, yet I still remember that primordial emotion and interpretation of the Record after I listen to it. The feeling that album burned into my brain was also etched into my soul (in the best way). Continue your Floyd journey! Even Floyd's worst moments have shreds of creativity, like Point Me at the Sky. 😂❤😊 Cheers!

RIP Richard Wright who's Keyboards carried Pink Floyd from the beginning. This Track is one of my personal favorites on DSOTM and now that I've seen the lyrics after 50 years (I was Ten Years Old when this album came out) I finally realize that "Us and Them" was probably an "Anti Vietnam War" Anthem.

During Roger Waters time leading Pink Floyd, he brought a lot of his own personal trauma into the music, which comes through again and again. His father died in World War II, and he and his brother were raised by his mother in Cambridge, where he went to a local school. He hated it, apart from being an avid participant in sports. This Album explores the concepts of Conflict, Greed, the passage of Time, Insanity, and Death. But at least it's just all light-hearted stuff, right?
