- According to Christians, we have a God-shaped hole in our hearts that only God can fill, and unless we're accept Jesus, we'll never find satisfaction. Here's why this can be incredibly detrimental to our happiness and even potentially abusive. I'll also offer a healthier alternative.

there is a 'mom and dad' shaped hole in me and I tried so hard to fill it with God. now I use therapy and parental figures to fill it. that works much better.

Similar thing happened to me. Now, I have to be my own source of comfort and strength. But It Is real. This Is the only faith warranted, faith in oneself.
My friend's dad filled my "god shaped hole" when I was 8 during sleep-overs and ruined my life. I don't blame anyone but him for that happening but I do blame my distracted parents for being so busy getting "filled by the holy spirit" to notice the creeps swimming around abusing us kids, they're to blame for the situation materializing. Even to this day my mom doesn't truly get it. I'm only one victim, there are many more getting r*ped while people look the other way because it's inconvenient.
I'm absolutely heartbroken this happened to you. Did you ever tell your parents????? There are too many predators out there. Maybe you don't believe in the afterlife but I do believe one day he will have to answer for what he did, after death. I'm not really religious but I do believe in life past death.
Perhaps you can confront him today, if you feel able to do so, and tell his family. They should know they have a sick and/or evil person in their midst and what their loved one chose to do.
I'll never understand child predators. Maybe it happened to him growing up but that's no excuse. He knows it's wrong.
Im just very sorry you had to live thru this. You were innocent and that's a disgusting thing to do to any child. I can't think of many things more appalling or ugly than violating a child's innocence.
So sorry this happened to you. Happened to me too and the trauma effects were horrific. Healing now by learning to love myself and treat myself with real compassion, gathering up all the wounded parts of myself and bringing them safely home within.
I'm with you here. I had a Marist Brother fill my gsh. Mind you, he was only able to do that because my own father had done his own fair share gsh filling. Some of my earliest memories are of this happening. All of it happened because this is what happens to children in catholic households and schools. Sure, not everyone. There have been enough investigations to know that it happens to way too many. To this day, my mother denies that this happened to me. She doesn't want to think she let that happen. She did. She knew, and she would take that out on me when I was 8 and 9 years old. Religion sucks. Catholicism should be dismantled entirely. It is the most corrupt institution on the planet.

The bible is filled with stories to help guide mankind to better morals but it is very primitive which means that it is not timeless and is more relevant for the time period that it was written then present!

My deconversion was probably the worst time of my life. I was raised in a cult and god was LITERALLY my entire life. Not only was losing my faith traumatizing, but the fact that I had to go through it alone made it even worse. I think I may have CPTSD. That was fairly recent, but I'm doing a lot better now

I once had an immense god-shaped statue in my garden. Over the years that I tended it, I positioned plants to accent it and augment it, and the plants in the garden had grown around it and incorporated it into the overall design so fully that it was one with the garden. It seemed like a perfect fit. Then, one day, I learned that the statue was made from toxic heavy metals which were leaching into the soil. This made anything grown in the garden toxic. To prevent my children from getting lead poisoning from the plants in the garden, I needed to remove the god-shaped statue. I was devastated to learn this, because the statue had been a gift from my parents, who were unaware of the issue with heavy metal contamination, and the statue had been a central part of my garden for many years. Nonetheless, I could not ignore the problem. I would not be able to live with myself if my children fell ill due to my neglect of the situation. Once the statue was removed, however, there was a gaping void in my garden that was the exact shape of the god statue. The ground was barren in that spot, and the garden looked empty. A god-statue-shaped hole. At first it seemed that only the god-shaped statue could perfectly fill that bare spot. However, I soon realized that gardens grow and change over time, and that with enough care and tending, the garden would adapt. At first, I sowed plants in that bare patch which help remove toxic metals from the soil. I grew these plants for several years, until the heavy metals were no longer present in harmful concentrations. Then I put a fountain where the statue once was, which makes a calming focal point, and also provides water for wildlife to visit my garden. I surrounded it with native perennial plants like wild berries, shrubs, and flowers, which provide beauty, shelter, and even food for wildlife throughout the various seasons. My garden is now more beautiful and alive than ever, and there is no longer any indication of a god-statue-shaped hole at all, and I no longer need to worry about the toxic effects that such a statue might have had on my children or the local wildlife. My children, now grown, only have a vague recollection of the statue. I removed it early enough that they have not suffered from the effects of the toxic metals, nor do they feel any need for a god-shaped statue in their own gardens, which they are now tending. Their gardens are even more beautiful than mine, even if they are less traditional. They will never understand how hard it was for me to remove that statue. For that, I am grateful. My gift to them was to not give them any statue at all, but instead to show them how to care for their gardens so that they could make them whatever they want them to be.
A very cogent & affecting parable, exceptionally well-crafted, especially in choosing the metaphor of a garden, which shows up constantly in symbolic religious narratives. Kudos!

I am a recovering drug addict & this is a phrase that gets used constantly in 12 step fellowships. I constantly push back on this concept, respectfully, and am consistently met with genuine gratitude from those who have alternative views from that of the majority
As a former addict myself, I know exactly what you mean. I can't deal with AA, NA, I did learn to deal with my emotions while in rehab and regularly talk to a therapist, and it works wonders for me. Do whatever works for you, stay strong, and wish you the best.

Same here. I will say, celebrate recovery is MUCH worse in this respect (attended while in a juvenile facility) but still after getting out I found the higher-power assumptions of aa/na to be too much. Ultimately needed to get on suboxone to fill the very real opioid-shaped hole between my receptors before I could start getting the rest of my life in order. I know some can do well without MAT but the stigma around it and the assumption that god is all you need is simply dangerous

I was thinking the same thing. I'm a recovering heroin addict and so much of what I hear in AA/NA is very similar to religious ideology.
My sister (alcoholic) has "found Jesus" she really just switched from one addiction to another
The one who said "god-sized" instead of the usual "god-shaped" only highlighted how that metaphor actually implies that the human heart is larger than a god.
I hope they recognize that an enlarged heart is a serious, life-limiting medical condition.

To infer the human heart is God sized means man loves as much as God, but God loves more than man and is working all things for good.

Having never had a religion, it is good to know how people who are leaving the church feel. It makes it easier to support them in their journey.
The feeling's the same for someone who had a more moderate religious upbringing (my parents are very religious, but they didn't ask me to be more than a "Sunday morning Christian") seeing the perspectives of people who were raised in extreme, high-control religious environments.
Personally I had a hard time believing because I believed what they they thought me in school, the world rejects the existence of a creator so they rationalized a existence without him. But if God exists the story told to us in school isn't rational because it is inherently evil, and God isn't evil, as we learn he is the express image of Christ. I became a Christian once I learned the bible is based on eyewitness testaments.
The apostles who witnessed Jesus testified of the truth, man is so bent on rejecting that, they have said the gospels weren't written by the apostles, when they make mention of themselves in their writings. Jesus did exist and was witnessed by the Pharisees's who in their writings mentioned he was sentenced to various accounts of death, you'd hardly sentence a man to death that didn't exist. The bible prophecies that man will heap up teachers for themselves and turn their ears away from the truth, that is the work done against Christ, they are so bent on saying the bible is not told in truth. It's the only book of it's kind holding the prophetic word of God written by different authors witnessing the works in different centuries from each other. God made the bible through man and is a testament of his existence.

Ex-muslim here. When you were talking about the depression that comes after leaving a religion, I really felt that. It’s hard to live another life where god and prophet are not the center of your life. I told myself that I would be strong and power through the sadness but sometimes I would think if I didn’t leave Islam I wouldn’t feel depressed.
If it weren’t for friends, fellow sceptics and my teammates in sports, I think I would have been in a worse place mentally than I am now.

I was raised atheist and my mother would always say that insecure Christians judge other people to avoid thinking about their own flaws and problems. Being told I have a God shaped hole in my heart would make me think that person was lonely if they felt like they needed an invisible man to fill their heart, and I would feel sorry for them-- until I got older and saw how cruel many of them could be. Now when it's easier to keep my distance I find that I understand more what my mother actually meant. I also could never understand how someone could believe in a god, and it's still a strange concept to me tbh, but listening to former theists has made it more understandable.
Because there are so many questions that, when asked, can't be answered. They are so unfathomable that you can't conceive of any possible answer. Primarily though I'd imagine fear of death, and that fear is so strong... I can't tell you how many times I've tried to believe in God just so I could convince myself that life is eternal. I certainly have a God-filled hole, but there is no God to fill it 🤷♂️
@@lostwoodsman9708 it's hard to convince oneself of an imaginary being that has no evidence for existence. Ask yourself what concrete evidence you have. Because you have none, all the evidence you have is based on your emotional interpretentions. Wanting god to exist doesn't mean it does.
It's difficult to imagine living without religion and a god figure when you were brought up to be dependent on both, especially when your entire family and friend group does the same and views those with differing views as morally deficient, stupid, or both. I'm still in church for family reasons, and I've noticed every sermon I see follows the same formula: in the story being studied, anyone not kissing God's ass is degraded, and the congregation is compared to them and similarly called a total failure, followed by a call to worship God. It's unsurprising that many children brought up listening to that from someone they've found adults respect will take it to heart and believe they are inescapably broken, and the only cure is the specific religion they happened to be brought up in.
and it is difficult to believe (to trust the teacher) that ADULTS worship magic. It sure was when I (at the age of 11-ish) first heard about religi0n.

So you can only imagine how bizarre the entire world looks, with otherwise supposedly "intelligent" adults believing in an invisible being in the sky who cares deeply about how you touch your pee-pee and whether or not it felt good, under threat of eternal punishment.

@@specilegg I grew up believing then realized how flawed the Bible is. It doesn't line up with real events, it contradicts itself, and God seems to have multiple personalities depending on the author.
Maybe there was a Jesus preaching love, but he wasn't the son of God. He was just a cult leader that died, and was later made into something he was not. Just look at the birth story, it doesn't even match in the gospels. It's a very simple thing but there's two completely different stories. There's several places where Jesus goes off on his own, but somehow the author knows what happened. It's obviously not eye witness, so did Jesus tell him about it? If he did, what makes it credible?

So true, they say that they will be persecuted. Try going for a week as an atheist and see who is really going against the grain. Everywhere churches and people pulling for you to take that step of faith. It goes all the way up to our government. Just searching through atheist or deconversion youtube videos will pull up all kinds of Christian ads calling for you to have faith. I put aside my faith after studying through endtimes prophecies, eventually becoming preterist, soon after found the doctrine of hell was also wrong, becoming annhialist, then welcoming evolution and old age of earth. All the while I tried to reconcile these new teachings to my faith in Jesus. Compared Christ's death to the ego death in eastern religion. I went about as far as you could go to give Jesus a place integrating with my search for truth. Many won't go questioning because faith by its nature requires you don't - whatever is not of faith is sin - and punishment, the churches interpretation of hell. I'm now seeing it is just not a good idea to give any place to the faith. Once you let go you can start to learn who you are, live a full life, and actually show up mentally to be a source of good to others.

Once my relationship ended with God, I felt relief, but it was for only a moment. Soon, fear and sadness came. It's hard but a necessary step.

Oh don't worry. They're aware of this. In fact, when people's "holes" get clogged, they will have a surgery to put in a stent or replace plumbing so those holes stay open. I mean, the heart is just a biological pump that moves blood. It better have some holes in the system so that the blood isn't trapped

Yeah, de conversion for me was like a bitter divorce. I became an angry atheist, intent on destroying other people's faith. But very "in my head". A couple of years later, on return to my home country, my old pastor challenged me to process my emotions. I reinvented god in my head, and spent a few weeks raging at him directly. That helped.
My then partner had had an emotionally abusive, controlling step father, growing up. We spent a lot of time giving each other a shoulder to cry on.

I'm sorry for what you went through.
I had an angry atheist phase when I first came out of religion. Now I look back at those years and cringe. I think it's something a lot of us go through, though. For me, I learned to cope by watching a lot of The Atheist Experience. Hearing the condescending religious people being talked down and the genuinely curious people being enlightened was cathartic to me. As a bonus, I also learned a lot about debate and critical thinking.

@@specilegg Yes, but if you'd been brought up in a thoroughly Islamic context, your mind would have been formed by Islam, and you would be utterly convinced that worshipping a man as God is the most blasphemous idolatory. You are completely failing to take into account how strong the influence of your background is. Islam praises Isa (their name for him) as a great prophet. They just say that his message got distorted. You'd believe that strongly, and so when missionaries turned up you'd think they were mistaken.
Please try to think about this, rather than assuming you'd be a blank slate that missionaries could write on.
I've been in recovery for almost 17 years, stopped attending AA right before Covid… I heard this phrase over and over the whole time, "God shaped hole is the reason we drink" ...all this time I thought it was an AA saying not realizing it was a Christian saying 🙄😮🙄😮🤣
I think this is one of those rare cases where a Matrix analogy is actually pertinent.
When Neo allowed himself to be ejected from the Matrix, he found that he was not alone in his withdrawal symptoms. It took time for all of them to adjust to the reality, that everything they had known before was a lie.
Cypher was a good example of someone who was so disenchanted with reality that he would go to any lengths to return to the comfort of illusion.
Hi Stef. That is very interesting but surely Cypher is a slightly more complex character. He knows the "juicy steak" is an illusion and do we know if he will ever lose that knowledge in the Matrix?
My guess is that few people of faith regard it as a fiction worth adopting just to get material benefits. Is that right?
@@martifingers I think you’re wrong. Anecdotally, a lot (though not a majority) of self-described Christians are aware they have no good reason to believe it, but they still say they do.
@@Leith_Crowther Hi Braindead. You could be right. It may be that there is a range of "belief"... eg people who profess a faith but don't really think about it much at all, various levels of cognitive dissonance etc.
Sean Carroll (and others of course) argues is that “God” is not well defined. Could this account for some of the variety? I could see that people might find all sorts of ways of accommodating their degree of belief to something that is so vague as to be incoherenet (at least to me.) On the other hand , Christianity does seem to demand believers adopt some sort of Christology that would imply certain moral and social attitudes and behaviour. It’s harder for me to see that existing with any sustained level of cognitive dissonance.
I didn't realize how much comfort I got from the idea that there's someone out there watching out for me and has my back until I began questioning the religion I was raised with, and the idea that good people get rewarded with Heaven after death and those that hurt others will get what they deserve, Hell in other words. Being without that imagined safety net was a struggle with my for many years. It made me realize how important it is that we depend on each other for support instead of a deity, but what about those who have no one else? This is me, I think Christianity is intellectually ridiculous but I’ve felt alienated from any sense of culture or community for a long time and keep wanting to turn back to Christianity. Atheists keep telling me to go to a yoga class or something, and that that will somehow fill the hole left by religion, but it’s not the same. The “God-shaped hole” is probably based off a part of Aquinas’s philosophy. I think I remember reading that when I went over it. A lot of Christian philosophy now is based on him, even the protestant groups (though a lot of them don’t know it).

He was one of the first Christian philosophers to claim that god bestowed the gift of reasoning onto humanity. He also said that god was unknowable through reason, and that it was a thing of only faith, which is a refreshing take from a theist. If he was born in this time (or any time in which Natural Selection an evolution was commonly accepted in the scientific community) he probably would've become an atheist, in my opinion. You can find more about him on the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

Thank you! THIS is what I’ve been saying for years when it comes to me and being addicted to opiates. AA told me that “without a higher power, I’m doomed to fail” and that “for the times no one is around, the only one who can help is god, to whom I should pray”. Well, I am the one making the decision to pray, which means it’s ME that has control over what I do and NOT an invisible being. Once I realized that, I stopped going to AA & NA and took responsibility for myself, realized the god concept was ridiculous and after a lot of research, became an atheist. That was 26 years ago and the last time I took opiates. It IS about willpower. It IS up to the person who’s addicted. There is NO god out there waiting for you to pray to it for help.
I keep wondering, when did the idea of prayer evolve, and did it evolve different times, or just once in society? I think prayer has a different organizing mechanism, letting you say something out loud earnestly to organize your thought. Basically it gives a simple missions statement and way to layout what you're going to do before you. Although that's just my hypothesis from a social stand point.

I think the ideas is more of a god that cares for you is around you and surrounds everything, an ambient god. A god who doesn't die knew your ancestors before you ever did, and knew everything about how you got to where you are today. Also, one that tries to look out for you like a father, sometimes giving harsh information and sometimes giving information as soft as a bowl of down feathers. Really just something to look at and realize a path given to you when you may not have any. This is what comes to mind, what god would fit that I'll leave up to the reader.

I've never been a believer and started refusing to attend church at six years old. Thanks for helping me to understand. The main takeaway from this video is: THE TEAPOT IS REAL!
This is exactly what I went through over the past five years. Twice. First with an abusive parent, then with an abusive god. If you're going through this, I'm here to tell you, it does get better. Surround yourself with friends (and family if any are supportive) who will support and love you while you do the hard work of deconstructing and putting yourself first for once. It's terrifying, but it's worth it in the end.

OH MY GOSH I did not expect for this to get me emotional. You nailed it on the head: the whole deconversion experience. And you so beautifully described the WHY of that crazy, spiraling feeling. It wasn't just god I lost, it was an entire village and my identity in it. Thankfully I'm a few years out from my "faith crisis" and it is true that I now have a real village that has filled my heart and life with so much more love and fulfillment that I thought was possible. This was a very well-timed video for me. I've been slowly moving away from Christianity, in my case it helped that it was a slow process. But also, dealing with the loss of a romantic relationship. On an intellectual level, I know it makes sense to have a village to meet my various needs; however, I've got to deconstruct a lot of conditioning that told me that "the one" is out there.

@@specilegg The Gospels were written 40-80 years after the life of Jesus by anonymous writers who never met Jesus or anyone else who knew Jesus. We do not have any eyewitness evidence of Jesus. This is the conclusion of 200 years of New Testament scholarship mostly done by Christians. The Pharisees didn't leave any writings. There are no real Biblical prophecies. (by the way, The verb is "prophesies" with an 's,' "Prophecy" with a 'c' is the noun. The prophet prophesied a prophecy. Prophesy is the verb. prophecy is the noun. It's ok, lots of people get that mixed up). You know nothing about the Bible, I can tell. Thank you Thomas. I'm going through the hardest time of my life. My wife left me. My children have estranged themselves from me. My friends have estranged themselves from me. My community that I was so part of have estranged themselves from me. Especially, the God that I followed and loved has become imaginary. Now I'm left to pick up the little pieces of my life at 60 years old. Where I live is extremely religious and there are no secular therapists nor support. I'm hurting and I feel so alone.

What insurance provider do you have? You may be able to seek virtual therapy.
Also, I suggest finding a new community - that can be anything you want- a bowling league, book club, divorced men's group. There may be a free thought community center nearby where you can meet like minded people.

I almost feel lucky never to have experienced that feeling... But the reason I never really felt that hole was because my religion drove me to self-loathing to the point of Emotional self-abuse.
Rather than feel a god-shaped-hole... I felt the chains come off, and the boot stop smushing my neck. I was angry for a little while... But soon moved on, finding more and more wonder in the world, and more and more mental and emotional stability.
The closest I can feel to that "hole" was my first (currently only) ever relationship breakup. It was devastating for a few years... But as time has gone on, I've come to realization that he best thing my ex (who I loved very fiercely) ever did for me was dump me. It opened up SO many doors, led to so many new friendships, and left me free to leave my hometown to pursue my dream career. It may have hurt a lot at the time, but I'm stronger and better for it now, and I wouldn't want to change it anymore.
To those of you with post-deconversion depression... I wish you luck and hope you can weather that storm. It does get better.

I think I was very fortunate that I just drifted away from religion - and I'm not sure that I was every really a believer, so the process was entirely painless.
There is, however, for a lot of believers (or even for some people like me whose attempts to "fake it till they make it" fail), the additional problem that leaving their religious community may mean leaving a lot of social activities behind.

When I had to give up my black arabian stallion for health reasons he left a huge hole in my heart. It's still there but knowing he is well loved and cared for helps. I still haye loved ones in my life. Especially my sons. Life is still fine although I'm in poor health. I've been lucky enough never to have been able to become religious. I wouldn't enjoy the withdrawal. I view it as an addiction now that I'm an adult rather than a small child who was unable to become a believer.

My parents did not force religion on me. My mom died when I was 12 and my aunts and uncles told me to pray and read the Bible. I was an avid reader so I sat down and read The Good Book...cover to cover.

My fascination with religion is in studying other people's fascination with religion.
I've never felt empty and I've lived a more than adequately full life. The stories of Jesus and other religious heroes are compelling, no doubt. But, to me, everyone's story is compelling. Personally I had a hard time believing because I believed what they they thought me in school, the world rejects the existence of a creator so they rationalized a existence without him. But if God exists the story told to us in school isn't rational because it is inherently evil, and God isn't evil, as we learn he is the express image of Christ. I became a Christian once I learned the bible is based on eyewitness testaments.
The apostles who witnessed Jesus testified of the truth, man is so bent on rejecting that, they have said the gospels weren't written by the apostles, when they make mention of themselves in their writings. Jesus did exist and was witnessed by the Pharisees's who in their writings mentioned he was sentenced to various accounts of death, you'd hardly sentence a man to death that didn't exist. The bible prophecies that man will heap up teachers for themselves and turn their ears away from the truth, that is the work done against Christ, they are so bent on saying the bible is not told in truth. It's the only book of it's kind holding the prophetic word of God written by different authors witnessing the works in different centuries from each other. God made the bible through man and is a testament of his existence.

This video hits pretty close to home. I left Christianity years ago, so I’m at a much better place now than when I first left. But a friend of mine for almost over a decade found out recently that I left Christianity, and she hasn’t spoken to me since.
I was talking to my mom about this. I was pretty upset about it, but she agreed with my friends actions because it’s biblical to cut people off who don’t share the same religion as you.
In what way is it biblical? Is that what Jesus tells them to do?
@Ziploc in the bible, isrealites are warned not to keep company with pagans and heathens, although sometimes they made exceptions for "righteous" people. jesus was much more open minded but the bible is a guide and not to be questioned
Personally I had a hard time believing because I believed what they they thought me in school, the world rejects the existence of a creator so they rationalized a existence without him. But if God exists the story told to us in school isn't rational because it is inherently evil, and God isn't evil, as we learn he is the express image of Christ. I became a Christian once I learned the bible is based on eyewitness testaments.
The apostles who witnessed Jesus testified of the truth, man is so bent on rejecting that, they have said the gospels weren't written by the apostles, when they make mention of themselves in their writings. Jesus did exist and was witnessed by the Pharisees's who in their writings mentioned he was sentenced to various accounts of death, you'd hardly sentence a man to death that didn't exist. The bible prophecies that man will heap up teachers for themselves and turn their ears away from the truth, that is the work done against Christ, they are so bent on saying the bible is not told in truth. It's the only book of it's kind holding the prophetic word of God written by different authors witnessing the works in different centuries from each other. God made the bible through man and is a testament of his existence.

The good news of the Gospel told in eye witnesses of the resurrection of Jesus was in regards to the salvation of the righteous, payment for sins and sanctifying of individuals.

Side note, none of the gospel writers claim to have seen the resurrected Jesus. They only relate stories of such encounters. The only biblical character who claimed in writing to have seen a risen Yeshua is Paul, and even then he reports his story two different ways that contradict each other and says he doesn’t know if it was real or a vision. So, a little less confidence might be in order.

It's been almost a year since my deconversion, and I really appreciate how you tackled this concept in your video. When I was growing up in a Catholic household, priests and youth ministers would use the "God-shaped hole" phrase a lot. Because of this, when I felt depressed and isolated after my initial break with religion, I was continuously worried that my negative emotions were somehow "a sign" of the "spiritual reality" that I was separated from God. Thankfully, after I started to make some nonreligious friends in college, these feelings mostly subsided. However, my parents still believe that I need religion to get me through life, and I think it might be that they can't imagine life without religion after being Catholic for 50+ years. This video was reassuring because it helped to explain some of the struggles I went through, especially in the first months of deconstruction.
