Yay, you got my suggestion! :D The C64 was pretty bad at racing conversions too, Chase HQ and WEC Le Mans being particularly bad.
Also, Gamevoy Advance, their ports of Marble Madness and Klax were literally cut in half as they were only given 5 weeks to develop them.
Wasn't aware of the low development time for the Game Boy titles. The 64 had some decent racing games but yes as noted Chase HQ is awful
Hello yoooo
But....
Hello, you!
The first time I heard of Klax was on GX4000 Amstrad I got it more recently on Sega Genesis. I need to look up the Gameboy Advance one.
Hello you!
The funniest part of the bad STUN Runner ports is how the speedometer reads 500 mpg when in reality you’d be lapped by an old lady pushing a shopping cart full of cans of cat food.
LOL comment of the day
I just cracked the hell up laughing at the skeletons holding several chicken drumsticks threateningly in Rastan on the Amstrad.
Lol, those drumsticks are deadly thou
LOL no doubt
They look like corn dogs to me! 😅
They really are chicken legs!
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries damn, I'm gonna go fire up MAME for some Rastan!
Dude you are the best. That’s why I’ll holding off on my big collaboration video until you are in. Reminder it’s on guilty pleasures. One minute long is perfect. Please and thanks. You are still my favorite UA-camr 😊
I LOVED the C64 port of Contra as a teen! To get around the spacebar thing, I played with the C64 on the ground while I sat on the couch, and used my toe to tap the spacebar. ;-) Some next-level thinking there. I played a bunch of games that used the spacebar for a secondary function this way. Commando comes to mind. Love that Rob Hubbard version of the theme!
That's how I played Green Beret. A friend of mine then came up with a creative idea. He built a simple pedal mechanism that is connected to the fire pin on joystick port 1, which is same as pressing space. It was mostly cardboard so it didn't last very long.
One, two, three, four…………. Just kidding!! Happy New Year bubba! Love your channel Pat!
Happy new year! Thanks
Glad I read the comments first, was about to make the same comment!
@@hector189 No this video is count free
Awesome PQC thank you for all the content!!! All those years of playing beat -em- ups produced on hell of a tough guy! Best to you and your family!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. Happy New Year
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Me too same goes to PatmanQC and your Family too I Hope you been having a good Awesome New Years PatmanQC👍👍
I know that the topic of this vid is "Worst Arcade Conversions Ever, but when QC mentioned Contra, I thoroughly enjoyed the NES version. But I recommend the Famicom version even more. The Famicom version actually has cut scenes and a map showing where you are.
You misunderstood me. I said the NES version was good.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I heard you say the NES version was good, and I will agree. But when I played the Famicom version when I found a translated ROM, I discovered Konami cut a ton of things when it was localized for us here in the USA. Not only what I said previously, but a lot of the animation is different. A prime example is on Stage 5 "Snowfield," the Famicom version has snow falling. Check out the NES Contra page at The Cutting Room Floor and they break down all of the differences. Therefore, if I get the urge to play Contra, I will either play it on MAME or the Famicom version.
The Famicom version may have had a chip that only worked on the Famicom. I know later Konami titles had chips that used the same pins as FDS that were moved to the bottom of the NES.
@@kbramlett6877 Oh, the arcade version of Contra is not anywhere near as good as the NES version, though. Yeah, you get improvement and translation patches for a lot of games these day that restore things like that. I'mma check the Famicom version for sure.
I was just putzing around with Captain America for Genesis on my Wii U this past week. Aside from the missing animation or smaller scale energy bolt for Iron Man's special attack (which is what drew me to this game in the arcade), it's actually pretty comparable to the arcade game.
Yes I agree, it even has most of the voice samples
Oh yeah, was a very fun game with a buddy, but still not as good as the arcade game for obvious reasons. I beat it twice in the arcades with my friends. As far as early beat em ups, it's quite good, offering more variety than most of the time.
The SNES version of Captain America on the other hand, is just plain awful.@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries
12:32 When he said "HYPMOTIZED" I almost fell out my chair LMAOOOOO.
Patman, you outdid yourself with I quote " queeferoo". I nearly spit my dinner out with that one. Best retro chanell ever. Take care man.
Karnov is a 100% PERFECT port, from Speccy to C64 ofcourse, it even replicates the colour clash!!! a masterpiece.
LOL good call
I genuinely thought it *was* the Spectrum version, until I noticed the font! 😮
Thanks for another great piece of nostalgia! I’m absolutely up for more episodes in this series. I sure do remember the disappointment when I bought Outrun for the C64 and later the Amiga, just as you did. Afterburner was another less splendid conversion too I recall… 😅
Thanks, Patman. These games were so bad, I had an existential crisis, crawled under my desk, curled up into a fetal position, and finally emerged eight hours later, smelling strongly of urine and Taco Bell.
The jumping in the original contra arcade game is just aweful
Agreed, the NES version is an upgrade!
@@davidt3563 Yes, one of the few times an NES port was better than its arcade big brother.
@@swampdonkey4919 Another Konami arcade game better on NES would be Rush N Attack, imo. The music alone adds so much to the experience.
@@bubbythebear6891 I agree. And 2p mode was a nice touch.
Love you Pat! You will always be the fifth horseman in my mind
LOL, that's awesome. Thanks

Happy new year!Thanks my friend
Hi Pat, love your stuff. Great Work!
How nice of you to say, thanks for the generous donation. Cheers
Your best gaming video. This is such an important subject. Because we all had a lot of bad experiences of bad evenings after school playing are new games. Hoping they would be fab. Please do far more. Eswat, Street fighter, 1943, (spectrum), Pac-Land, Crackdown, and Shackled. All had some bad conversions.
I really feel for the developers who had to make some of these arcade conversions on machines that were years out of date! I just couldn't imagine the dedication it would take to make a late 80s or 90s arcade game work on something like the C64 or Spectrum! Those guys must have PTSD from the experience.
Excelent series. We need more bad ports. Please!! Great video
Considering that they were porting games from vastly superior hardware to platforms like the C64, these conversions are actually impressive in their own right. The majority of the ports shown here are going from Arcade Games that use 68000 or better CPU's to a 6502/Z80 platforms that didn't have dedicated hardware for things like scrolling. Arcade games also used multiple CPU's, better dedicated audio hardware (i.e. CPU and ROM just to run the sound). These 8Bit conversions are pushing the limits of their hardware a lot of the times. Yes, they could be better but when you've got a dead-line quality suffers.
The Spectrum version of S.T.U.N. Runner is indeed an excellent aid for putting people into a hypnotic trance.
LOL no doubt
The diner district in the Amiga port of Outrun is still hilarious. Do a shot every time a diner shows up on the horizon! Just kidding, you'd be swallowing constantly from the minute the stage begins until the second the race ends.
On point Pat as usual. Greatly enjoying your videos 🎉
Thanks a lot
Great video man! waiting on the 3rd part! cya there!!!
It's like if these conversions were rushed during development or something. Great video, Patman!
I'm sure they were, thanks brother
Karnov C64 definitely struggling there. That is some interesting music in the Rastan version, yes. That Outrun on Amiga looks rough. No scaling ability it seems and poor scrolling the Amiga suffered with, resulting in slow input feedback. Thanks for the history, Patman!
Yes, Karnov was having a bad day :-) thanks
I like to more think that you're dogging the people that made these games. IM JOKING! Hahahah! It's a joke to make people laugh, relax!
I'm glad that everything good and bad works together to bring us all so much joy today. Great work on this video and the last as well. Super fun and entertaining.
Best wishes in the new year. Godspeed!
LOL, thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. Happy new year
The Amiga Outrun intro is hilarious, at least.
I agree, I don't know where that came from
I enjoy all your videos. Please continue the series.
Happy new year. Wish you the best for 2023! Thanks for your videos.
Master system version of rastan was awesome too...
The intro for the Amiga version of outrun is comical.
I know the Master System version of Rastan changed a couple of bosses for reasons unknown to me but otherwise it's amazingly close to the arcade, right down to the day to night transition with the backgrounds. It's head and shoulders above any other 8-bit port of Rastan.
All the effort went in the intro! They had to because the game did suck so bad...
@@simonebernacchia5724 "Ow, ow, ow, oooWWWWTRRRUUNN!!"
Its not even related to the game in any shape or form
Sounds more like it should be on a horror game lol
Yes bud, let's have another compilation like this!!
I was really happy to see a part 2! I love your videos!
Thanks so much
More please. I worked in a UK indie computer retailer in the late 80's and the amount of kids that we had buy these conversions, then had their mum or dad try to return for a full cash refund - was painful (we usually gave them credit - what were we, monsters?).
LOL. For a while Toys "R" Us allowed you to return opened software. the manager was getting So sick of me returning software I didn't like. :-)
CEX don't even allow you to return games for a refund unless you have a valid excuse. 😆
There are actually two different C64 versions for OutRun. The main programmer of the UK version was able to go back and make a few refinements with the US version.
The US version was the one I was familiar with which is the 1 I Focused on. I should have mentioned this in the video. Thanks
It really depended on the port as it could be quite random which computer got the better port. Amiga and ZX Spectrum got as many wins as fails. Thanks for the video! 👍
I agree.Thanks for watching
“Rastan himself looks like he’s been dipped in milk chocolate” 😂😂😂
Honestly, you can't complain about the C64 port of Chase HQ, before you've tried Cisco Heat :D
Also, while the framerate is quite ok, they managed to create very nice sense of lack of speed in the C64 port of Enduro Racer.
Also, is the C64 version of Robocop supposed to be based on the arcade version? At least they are very similar. Yes, it's very far from the worst arcade conversions, but there's an interesting detail, that could make it "honorary mention", if nothing else:
The developers were in a hurry, having to get the game finished for christmas season (Where have I heard this one before?), but the last level just wasn't working properly at all.
Their solution? Make the time limit for the second last level so tight, it's impossible to complete!
Just like UA-cam videos, there are more, so much more, bad games than good.
I thank the stars this channel is an absolute gem! Excellent stuff 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks so much
I like how the BBC Micro version of paperboy has the sprite turning for going left, but going right it just slides over.
Oh dang it. I was going to mention that and completely forgot. Good call
Another great video Patman and I would love to see more of these worst ever videos 👍
Excellent, thanks so much
2:32 First appearance of the Companion Cube from Portal??? ❤ 📦
I was like what do you mean they are running slow? Then remembered I have you on 1.25x speed.
That spectrum tunnel makes me think of the radical hypno high scene in 'Motel Hell'.
LOL, you are right
31:34 Yes PatmanQC do some more of one of the worst conversions games ever please I'm looking forward to other episodes until then keep reviewing and stay strong PatmanQC!!
I'm glad you enjoyed them thanks
please continue this series. i appreciate the work you put into this channel, and am always happy when i see a new upload :)
Thanks, will do!
What is going on in Paperboy with the perv who has his hands down his pants in the BBC Micro version at 20:18? How did they not see what this looks like?! Lol.. Also the Apple II version of the same game is atrocious! I cannot believe it's legal to release crap like that! Thanks for these, I love seeing and comparing the games across the different systems. Keep up the great work!
Thanks. It's amazing what companies released. That kind of stuff wouldn't fly nowadays
It's amazing and shocking how bad games can get and still be published. So many games look so bad that I can only wonder how the hell they managed to sell AT ALL. Amazing video!
(May I ask, have you ever done a documentary on Pipe Dream/Pipemania?)
Lol, good choice, putting comic book guy in the thumbnail XD
the 128k Spectrum Rastan has very good music, and UK computer mags liked it. I found it enjoyable, and have good memories of it. It is a little bit of a shame about a few things about the the C64 Rastan. But It does looks pretty good, plays well, and fab music.
I thought the 64 version was always a bit too slow. Always enjoyed the music though
As a kid in these times, few things were as disappointing as arcade conversions.
Omg, I can't believe everyone freaked out on you about your opinions
It's true it's true
Bland colours on the C64 are what they are. A more legit complaint is maybe a poor choice of bland colour usage. Paperboy is pretty decent for the C64. Outrun is not as nice looking as it could have been. Turbo Outrun for the C64 is an improvement.
Turbo out run for the 64 was excellent. Yes, that's how I should have put it. Poor choice of bland colors :-)
You can become a fire breathing Russian by drinking fireball whisky lol
LOL
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries ba dum tissssss!
I had Karnov on my IBM 286. I am glad you didn't call that version out. It truly was pretty good even though it was definitely not even close to the arcade.
No the PC version was actually pretty good especially for ann early DOS game
Okay you had me spit out my monster at the "Sniffing glue" comment. And here I was talking to my old Navy buddy about "Airplane"
Side note...Stop being so happy with "crappy little games". You need a drastic "shameful" or "disgusted" face.
Still a good video though.
Thanks, that's a good point about the happy look on my face. I'll keep that in mind :-)
Perfect way to start my day
Thanks hope you enjoyed it
I'm pretty sure that the game covered in this video that I own the most ports/conversions of is Paperboy. I have it for the Lynx, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, NES, SMS, and Genesis. Well, I also have Paperboy 2 on the SNES. I like the SMS and Genesis versions the most. As for S.T.U.N Runner, I only have it for the Lynx. The Lynx was a powerful system for its day.
The Apple IIGS did not have a true 16-bit computer. The 65816 CPU is an 8/16 bit processor. Also regarding the Commodore Plus/4 game, it's actually a Commodore C16 game, so it's a 16K game, not a 64K game, so would also be limited by that fact.
no port on any arcade game is 100% perfect you cant beat the arcade version but because of emulation wich is brilliant. now we can criticize how games where back in the day but that is what we had to be content with. even if some machines only had1 fire button. the spectrum tried its best, great video pmqc😁😁😁
Patman I've been going through your archives and you have a great Channel keep up the good work have you ever done a video on the Thunder Force Series all the great side-scrolling shoot them up so that came out on the Sega Genesis
You should warn for epileptic seizures for those at risk.
The background intro explains why there are no mentions of arcade conversions on the Atari 8bits. Although this video makes me glad I stayed away from the c64 line back then.
My brother-in-law had an Atari 800 when I was growing up and from what I've seen the conversions didn't turn out that bad. I know He had Pac-Man and donkey Kong and they were really good
Wow! I had to turn my head for the ZXSpectrum Stunrunner, that was a new level of awful, I was getting sick in those "tunnels"
LOL, it's pretty crazy that more people didn't get sick
What i hated the most about the Captain America and the Avenger's SNES port was enemies having invincivility after being knocked down.
I really should have mentioned that
Some of the Out Run conversions on old PCs were poor, but, growing up, I played Out Run on the C64 with Splash Wave as the track of choice.
The first outrun was pretty good for DOS and much better than the Atari ST or Amiga versions.
I know they're not great, but I have fond memories of Outrun and Paperboy on the C64 as they were all I had growing up.
As an Atari 2600 kid addicted to Defender and Kung Fu Master, I can relate.
Though, these days, I have as hard a time getting into bad C64 ports as you probably would getting into even the best 2600 games.
I thought Paperboy on the C64 was a good port tbh.
Happy New Year thank you
This isn't exactly major childhood trauma being dug up here, but definitely major childhood disappointment.
LOL I think you're right
7 seconds to get me laughing, a new record
LOL, why thank you
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries No, thank you for making such great work man, always brings a laugh to me when I’m having a shit day. These documentaries you put together are some of the best gaming content on UA-cam, in no small part because of your presentation, I’m always caught off guard and crack up when I put on your stuff.
The Commodore 64 was my first go to 8 bit gaming system as well growing up. My parents purchased one in '83 and I loved the great games on it! Crazy thing is I still have that same computer and it still works to this day! I didn't realize that Karnov and Outrun were so terrible on the Commodore 64. I know Afterburner wasn't too bad of a port. lol And yes please continue with this series.
There were actually two versions of afterburner one released in Europe and one released in the USA. Which version did you have?
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I'm going to be honest man I am not sure which version I have. I know I have the original floppy 5 1/4 disk of it though. I'll have to get back to you on that. lol Which version was better? I remember the one I have being pretty decent.
While I'm old enough to have been there, we always had consoles (Atari, NES...) rather than PCs so I missed out on all kinds of queefy goodness.
You really have to do Ghosts 'n Goblins on C16+4, it really is the worst ever!
It's definitely on the list whenever I get back to the series
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I bought the damn thing. I learned a lot about expectations that day in my childhood.
The C64 contra/gryzor port touches upon the three major flaws of the 64: one button joystick, 16 colors, and poor game development/implementation. Solve these and it goes toe to toe with nes/ master system!
Great great video, Pmqc
But did you have to show Rainnn “will whine for relevance” Wilson ugh
It is a given that any arcade conversion by Tiertex is garbage. Amazingly, the company survived until 2021, with lead developer Donald Campbell still at the helm (though their last video game was produced in 2003).
Even the arcade version of outrun only managed 30fps. Think it was a game boy or 3ds version that ran at 60fps first
I think it was the Saturn version but I could be mistaken
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries looks like you're right
Thanks!
Thanks a lot for your donation! Glad you enjoyed the content
The clouds in Outrun repeat themselves, I have never seen clouds actually do that
Holy Guacamole, S.T.U.N. Runner blew dead bears on the Amiga. So glad I missed it. :)
Gryzor on the Amstrad CPC was actually pretty good (if memory serves me) and it was ported by the legendary John Brandwood, who also did Renegade. The games you did present are as it says on the box, pretty painful to even watch you play 😅
Yes it was really good on the CPC which is why I didn't include it :-)
From what I heard from James "AVGN" Rolfe, Paperboy was the first American game published for the NES.
Just a little trivia (and possibly a reason why the port wasn't very good).
Interesting, I did not know that
I was honestly surprised that the Nintendo version of Paperboy is on the list. I always enjoyed playing that one and found to be one of the better versions.
Please continue the series.
I will at some point
I still have my copy of STUN Runner on the Lynx. That is a really good port as far as home console ports go.
One of the best that is not running under emulation
Rastan for C64! I remember trying and trying to beat it. In my opinion the graphics and music were great, but the gameplay was a mess. I remember beating a few levels, but I don’t recall how far I got. It was always cause for celebration getting past the first level. Very frustrating.
Just looked up a long play. I just realized I considered inside and outside to be separate levels when then are not. I definitely beat level 1. I definitely never got to the level 2 boss. I think I got to the level 2 castle. Anyway, I’m going to go back to the long play to see what I never got to.
Do you remember General Chaos on the Sega Genesis.... I love that game back in the Day....
Biggie smalls got hypnotized playing the zx spectrum version of stun runner lol
LOL it's horrible. I can just imagine someone having a seizure trying to play it
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries yikes! That's no good pat.
I like these videos. It makes me feel slightly blessed I never had to deal with so many dogshit ports of those games haha. I mean, I crap on the NES for not living up to the arcades (but knowing they couldn't so I wasn't really that mad of course lol) but WOW most of those ports are embarrassing.
I also love knowing the reasons why they were so bad. I have so much more sympathy for them knowing they didn't have a choice in the matter. I can understand not many of them getting back to you but it's fun when they do and knowing the behind-the-scenes reasons for what happened!
Not all conversions were bad, there were some that were quite good even on the Atari 2600
Yes, more please!
Wow, the Amstrad version of Rastan must have made kids wonder if something had gone wrong with their system. I wonder if some people took the Rastan cart out and put in a better game they already had to see if the sound was still terrible. :) The BBC Micro version of Paperboy is unbelievable. Worse than early Gameboy games.
Some of these arcade ports are so terrible that they sent us back to the arcade. People who were worried that home consoles would kill the arcades didn't have to worry at first because the ports were so terrible that we preferred to go back to the arcade. Any game more complex than Asteroids, Space Invaders or games like that didn't get a port that really rivaled the arcade cabinets until the NES days, though not every NES or even SNES or Genesis port was really worth getting. It was a minefield of quality or the lack thereof.
Entertaining video with some versions that even I haven't seen before, or in a very long time.
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed it. Yes, a lot of those conversions are just God awful and it's amazing that they were ever released in the first place
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries It sure is. It's amazing how bad some games are yet get published. Then there are so many really good games that never get published, or the programmers have to self publish because they don't have the right business connections.
As always, go for it, Pat 😉🙂👍
Thanks 👍
one of my favorite UA-camrs!
Thank you my friend
Really interesting on a technical level seeing those ports of Paperboy. The BBC Micro one was a struggle, for sure. And those "tombstones" in the front yard are weird in the NES one!
The arcade game had tombstones in front of certain houses as well
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Ah, so actual tombstones?! I thought that was just one of your jokes on the video there and they weren't really tombstones (I was sitting a long way back from my TV). Mad stuff!
@@Hologhoul There are certain houses you don't deliver to So it's okay to break the windows, knock the tombstones over, etc. for point bonuses.
Worth noting there was 2 conversions of outrun for the c64 (I only discovered this recently, not sure why they did a second version, it was licensing or to try and address playability in the first one). Amstrad version of gryzor was good but flip screen. For these really slow fps games like stun runner, hard driving, outrun etc there might be a good video in playing these in overclocked emulation, particularly for the atari st where 3d stuff was generally handled better from a hardware perspective.
Great episode
Thanks so much
Like how game companies get the
Graphics right but the gameplay wrong
or the other way around.
I liked Contra, Outrun, and Paperboy on the C64. Even beat the first two. Granted, things were very compromized given the system. At least they felt close to the source material. Now, some of these other game ports...
Contra I did not like on the 64.Outrun could have been better and paperboy I was bound and determined to get my money's worth out of that 1
