This must be the only OB-Xa video in existence that manages to show the beauty of these synths without doing Jump or Tom Sawyer. Respect! ✊
Yeah, I'm sick of Jump, and final countdown, so boring.
Tom Sawyer? That was done on a OB-X. It has the 12 db filter we all know and love oberheim for. This had more of a Moog like 24 db filter. This also was more reliable though among other benefits over the OB-X. It has a lot to offer though even without the SEM type filter.
J3po's demo is excellent, too.
@@Rwtheking The Xa has both, 12 and 24db filters - but only lowpass, as I understand, while the SEM was state-variable.
@@Rwtheking I thought Jump was OB-X also, although you see the OB-Xa in the video...
Matt is such a versatile, virtuosic and creative player. He's exactly the right person to showcase these synthesizers. Its all very inspiring to me and educational..
I miss that a lot in nowadays reviews. That they talk about the sound. Same when you watch headphones reviews.. If you are lucky in the end they say something about the sound. Anyway. Want to grab this moment to tell you how much joy your music brought me in the 90's and gives me happy memories of good times. This synth has a balaced sound signature that gives that warm full sound I guess. And the analog drifting gives it character.
My god.
My own homage: ua-cam.com/video/UzYhMOdmb8M/v-deo.html
I wonder how the Sequential OB-6 compares?
What an artist, give him 88 keys and it will funkatize!!
OB-have! Awesome Matt.
I'm only jealous to the point of tears, but this was fantastic in your hands. What a synth!
Alex use your magical powers and get Tom and Dave on the ball ..we need the obxa reissue. It’s going to look and sound great next to my rev 4 👌😂
@@electrowayne2918 *speed dials Tom and Dave*
my two fave keyboard and synth channels should do a colab
Hi Alex did you try Phoenix on Gadget for iOS? it sounds very good to my ears but I would like to hear an expert opinion about software recreations of such unique synths, of course anyone can give his opinion as well, I am just curious
Thanks Alex!
"In the end of the day, the sound is the most important thing, not the features."
Man, this is simple and killing at the same time.
you are such a talented and tasteful player matt
My goodness, just watching the demos or “messing around” it is like being transported into a retro parallel universe, totally sublime 😊
Soooooo looking foward to Sequential's resurrection......that detuning is such a massive dopamine hit....the Barbieri'isms are tear inducing. ;)
@ghost mall not sure, but they do seem to have the rights for it with the OB6 and all that. Isnt the oberheim creator on their team as well?
@ghost mall No proof whatsoever, yet people keep touting as if it’s certain.
I was not impressed with the ob6 it was rather lack luster to be honest not holding out hope
@@kretzschMusic Tom (Oberheim) and Dave Smith collaborated on the OB6 rather than Tom being on their team as such. The OB6 and Prophet 6 are near identical designs save for the voice cards. When Dave was working on the Prophet 6 he and Tom were discussing a new Oberheim when Dave made the suggestion of piggy backing off his existing design. There's a long interview with Dave somewhere on the internets where he explains it all.
@@jimharris6389 think you are forgetting the VERY different state variable filter
For me it is that effervescent FIZZ that is so magical about the OB-Xa.
Matt, when the world allows, we def need some sort of collaboration from you and J3PO. yall are easily two of the most flavorful key-men
This thing is a damn monster. Absolutely stunning. Easily one of the best synths ever made. If Dave Smith/Tom Oberheim ever do a reissue, I’ll be racing to get my hands on one. So so good
Just put 2 Oberheim M1000 together, and you even have a bigger monster !
Not just a reissue. Exciting news from Oberheim these days. :)))
Let’s wait and see what the brand new Oberheim OB-X8 has to offer ❤️✌️
Thay did i think
@@AdamKrukowski yes they did, and I already have one on order!
A Behringer clone is apparently in the pipeline. I've heard around $1500 USD.
Great sounding synth - [*Behringer* has entered the chat....]
How come your monitor speakers keep changing in the background from Neumanns KH 310s to ATC SCM25As?
you need to get hold of a Behringer UB-XA and give us a comparison video as an experienced user.
mine is signed by Tom himself. it was originally owned by Juan Gabriel, then the Ghostly artist Aeroc, then me. I used it on a track i did for the Pete Namlook memorial compilation.
i could _never_ sell it.
glad to see you love it so much.
Oh the beautiful vintage wonkiness! This makes me want to sell my Montage and buy that Rhodes (with bad action) at my local music store; sell all my guitars and get a Moog One or Prophet and then I can live in a mid 70's era Gino Vannelli soundscape! As always Matt thank you for sharing. Cheers!
The basic nature of this synth definitely is part of why it is so awesome. That’s the thing with most analog polyphonic performance synthesizers. You can’t help but have fun with one when you know how it works. Furthermore, that one thing you played at 17 minutes remind me in a great way of this (slightly) obscure Survivor song from 1986 called “Is This Love”, never to be confused with the Whitesnake song of the same name.
For reasons I’m not likely ever to ascertain myself, the Oberheim synthesizer model I’ve been daydreaming about since the early 2000s has been the OB8. Perhaps, one reason is that this model, the Xa, has always been the cat’s meow and the 8 has long been like the overlooked stepbrother. Was the 8 when the SSM microchips that were used for creating the synthesis engine were replaced with the CEM chips that people say were less desirable?
Aahhh..i miss my OB 8. 😭
I sold her for $600 25 years ago.
Nice lead sounds. I used the thompson twins' old OBXa on one of my records `:)
Really? So that would have been the synth that played the bass sound in hold me now that everyone drools over ... but it was a synth!!!!!
That synth
Any synth would sound good in your hands. Your sounds have been so influential for me and I still think of them when making music.
Damn I wish on every war, the weapons of choice were analog synths not bullets. 😔
I think Beringher just did a Ub-xa remake
I really love the sound of Oberheim...It's amazing.
It started as a techno something and magically turned into early 80's rap.
Incredible! And those Rhodes accompanying parts were epic!
Creamyyyy and dreamyyy sounds!!!
Matt, your channel truly shows what all those vintage synths were made for. Your videos are a great contribution for any musician, but for future generations as well, I am sure!
Now that’s a Synth! Oberheim for Life!
Matt you are an absolute Genius on the keys! I've spent endless hours listening to you. I Just got the OB-X8 and your doubling the same patch with detune is game changer for me with this synth! and panning 4L4R in it is HUGE! Thank you!
As I always say your limits are your own creativity imagination regardless of the instrument. If we were all given just a pencil and a bit if paper we would all do something different with it. Most I guess would just draw , some would maybe make a model with the pencil and the paper some would do both.
What I love about Matt is,his ability to be expressive and always comes up with something delicious no matter what ingredients are on his table.
It's very, very very difficult to not spread out swearwords if I want to describe what I feel about this synth...... So difficult.........
............................
That's exactly same feeling when I see the more big round smooth big softy silky booty ever in front of me................
SAME INTENSITY
I must calm down, please BEHRINGER, SAVE ME
Wouldn’t you rather support a reissue from Tom and Dave?
Prince LOVED this thing, and used it on several songs starting with 1999
Loved the Oberheim. So very warm sounding.
Шикарный синт!!!
Надо такой иметь в любой студии.
Надо ещё Мэтта иметь в команде ))) тогда ваще отвал

When will we see the OB-X8? :-)
My very favourite synth for 40 years. The fascinating thing about it that you can generate a gazillion of very different, gorgeous sounds with this “pathetic“ feature set. In so far it is similar to the Prophet 5.
Unfortunately I could never afford a real OB-Xa, but even some VST clones like OBsession are so much fun.
Arturia do a decent version of the OBX as well
Just preordered the new OB-X8, and this video will be the benchmark by which it is measured. I don’t suppose you happen to have ten original uncompressed audio of this video available by chance? 😁
Superbly done as always Matt!
For being called basic I just heard 20 minutes of endless possibilities!
Breakwater- "Release The Beast"!!!
@9:00 daft punk robot rock
Its an icon... But I don't like the sound!
Awesome! 👍🏼 That intro reminded me of Paul Hardcastle
Great demonstration
Great demo. I would agree with all those who say this is one of the most iconic synths ever made. Those Oberheim synths always had great filters. "Instant 80s", lol. In the best possible way, yes absolutely. That "plain patch" sounds so good. doubled or not. wow.
Beautiful organic lovely synth. How does the ob-8 compare i wonder
12,000.00 though, wow, prices have really shot up, i will look at this comment in a few years and it will probably be much higher.
I don't usually swear by myself but at 0:42 I LITERALLY said "Ohh Shit!" 🏌Unreal sound and playing.
0:42 the funk is strong with this one
Hi,could you say something about harmonic Major and his modes?
You know, functional harmony of ionian b6,modal progressions for each modes etc
Or just list of songs, because I looking for this to long
and NOONE can help me,everybody are scared by harmonic Major?
And to echo a similar comment here, it would be extremely interesting to hear you test the forthcoming UB-Xa!
Wow, that intro blew me away! The Funkmeister at his best! Brilliant video, you can‘t beat Matt at what he calls „messing around“ with keys, just too good to be true ❤️
Not heard this kind of sound from the new OB-X8. If that or future UB-Xa could deliver that sound I’m in!
The beauty of analog synths is that they sound amazing even when in a compressed UA-cam video!
For real
Its already close, it's just a small bit of limiting. Even though...youtube..
9:26 - Hey, that's the synth solo from Easy with Al Jarreau, isn't it? One of my favourite synth solos of all time! Awesome! Always enjoy your playing and your synth videos! For those of you who haven't heard the original solo, here it is at 3:44 of this video: ua-cam.com/video/3ln4vZJz1HM/v-deo.html
My favourite solo!
Thanks for making this set Kontakt 5 compatible! I use v5 more than 6 because it is less resource heavy.
OB-Xa is real stuff and still one of the best synths ever made. No new recreation comes close
Great, now I want one even more!
Honestly though, the only synth for me that manages to be truly fat while still sparkling. They just sound utterly wonderful. Brilliant demo, thank you!
It's the filter that gives it that beautiful "sweet" sound. My favorite as well. I find the Moog filter too harsh for my taste. I haven't verified the claim, that the OB sound declined in "fatness" in going from the OB-X to the OB-Xa to the OB-8, but at the same time each model gained in function. I use the additional parameters plus the "beyond basic" page 2 functions on the OB-8 so much that I feel it makes up for any decrease in fatness, which can easily be remedied with effects. Nice overview and demo!
I owned an OB-Xa and OB-8 at the same time (mid 90's) and did a comparison and the Ob-Xa is definitely fatter with a deeper and richer bass in the lower registers. The OB-8 was much more of a complete synthesizer due to the page 2 functions and was the precursor to the Xpander in terms on modulation routing.
@@clivejones5880 I still have my OB-8 and Xpander. The parameters really exploded on the Xpander. The sound of the 2 is very similar to my ears.
That improvisation starting @ 14:00 is just totally awesome!!!! I could listen to this all day long...
I'm not that much familiar with those fast pentatonic runs, still learning. Progression is Ebm9, Fm9, Bbm9.
I feel like I am watching Johnny Lawrence in a curiously sudden and inexplicalble British accent! In all seriousness, terrific overview and demo playing! Subbed!
Matt, an OBX in your hands is like a light saber in the hands of a Jedi!💥🔥⚡️I am happy for you. I consider this to be one of the best sounding and most iconic synths ever made, along with the Roland Jupiter 8 and even the much hated Yamaha DX7.
Cs80?
@@DjReka87Absolutely! I just forgot it when I was typing that out
This is amazing. I finally 'get' why the OB-Xa is such a revered synth. My only hope is that behringer finally complete their reproduction of it. I somehow need this thing in mylife..lol Thanks for the amazing demo Matt :)
I have the OPX Pro II VST and I feel it has this very organic sound........it feels 'alive and breathing'.....I can never explain it, but it sure is heard/felt. I could only wish to own a physical OB...
Can't wait until you play the OB-X8. Didn't convince me yet, but you usually do magic on every synth. Well, that's your job ;)
Love hearing Matt play. So amazingly talented.
Just love that Oberheim sound, it's so unique.
At 15:03, my ears perked and my heart started beating faster.. what a beautiful tone!! Floored.
Woah, those synths are in friggin immaculate condition. I dont even wanna think about the dollar value of these babies. Nice.
OBX still sounds quite different not necessarily better (although somewhat) than OBX-a...,it's pretty subtle but evident folks
Videos like this make me NOT want to sell my OB-8 (with the OB Xa mod).
Gorgeous synthesiser. Very different . I was fortunate enough to work in a place in my early 20s at the height of my cannabis love affair that had one. He's correct. It sort of wobbles . Its as fat as a Jupiter 8 . Destroys the eq field , so it's hard to mix , its so big. The detune is sublime. Its got that theme from Bilitis vibe. Oh Lord.
She's a great synth. My passed on years ago, but I have a Matrix 6 now and she's damn close. I suppose you can always midi up your OB and use pitch and mod wheels if you like, but having the levers to me really help it's performance stand out. (I) can get far more precise pitch bending with them than with any wheels. The only real problem with the levers is similar to the old stick on a Roland and that's the mod wheel can't be left on partially if you want. Being spring loaded, it always returns to zero.
I Had One In 1983 For Few Year's It Did Stop in Tune For Long About 2hs And Then Retune Ect But Px It For PloyMoog In Late 1985 That Was a LItle Beter Stoping In Tune But The ObX Was A Nice Sound
15:24 can you recreate that sound on the OB-X8? I bought your OB-X8 patches, which is awesome!, but would also love this patch!!!
I heard a lead sound (monophonic) that I heard on Mezzoforte's record....now I now thanks to you thats it is OBxa sound...thx
Great video, thank you! I’m amazed at the simplicity of the OB-Xa and how featureless it is, but the sound that comes out of it is absolutely enormous! Tom Oberheim knew how to milk every last drop of sound out of his circuits. You can tell if an Oberheim is being used on a track almost immediately by the fullness of the sound, especially when lower notes start to shake the fillings in your teeth loose.
Nice post.
Worked a lot with OB players back in the 80's - they were the dog's b*****ks then. And stupidly expensive.
Genius is usually simple. I just bought an OB 6 chasing the Oberheim sound.
I much prefer 2-pole 12dB over 4-pole filters. Now I want to test that UB-Xa. Should come out soon.
Hey could you give me your advice please? I hear polysynths with VCOs sound much more analog and warmer than their dco counterparts - would you say that this is true?
Not always, I have a Juno 6 and it sounds very warm
@@MattJohnsonJamiroquai thx, how bout the Rev 2
The world would be a little better with this mega dream collab... Matt Johnson + J3PO? Let's dream about it.
If the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip made us (and still makes some of us) feel the world a little better, a dream collaboration between Matt Johnson and J3PO would make us feel like the world is or could be a little better.

Love your style Matt. I'm toying between this and a Roland fantom 8..the analog is wT to go I think..I'm pretty new to playing but wanna hit the ground running
Cheers. Been waiting for this since you first mentioned you got one in the studio. Amazing demo as always. The fatness of this thing is mindblowing. Can‘t wait for the next big reissue.
Look forward to you possibly getting your hands on the Obx-8x
Goodness gracious! My face melted on that open. It must have been Memorex.
Now i know which Japan-song you’re playing! ”Canton” 😃👍
That was a great Demo. I’ve been playing Synths and Keyboards for over Forty years,
and your Demo has taught me more about the Instrument today than I ever knew before.
Thank you . Ken fromScotland.
Its so expensive and i have 5usd in paypal from 5 years old xDD
what's thw secret of such a beautiful sound construction? Is the discrete components used or the architecture designed by the programmer of this beuaty? I'm in love with this keyboard
Always love seeing a real Oberheim OB Xa being played, especally when they are played by someone with such knowledge and expertise!
Ah yes my favorite synth of all time!
Very nice Matt, love the chords around 17:16 especially. Year late with feedback lol! Take it easy.

Can you play the same stuff with Behringers version?
